Argument for and against globalization

Globalization is inevitable!

This phenomenon which grows stronger in our world today has a multiplier effect on businesses, social interaction and economies all over the world. The way businesses and economies are run will continue to change in order to keep up with globalization which is a modern day reality.

Globalization is the interaction and integration of companies, people and governments on a global scale. Globalization is about blurring boundaries and breaking barriers to allow for easy and quick communication, investments and monitoring between any two places in the world. On these grounds, the three types of globalization will be political, social and economic globalization.

The above reality has its attendant advantages and disadvantages. Although globalization has improved accessibility of goods and services on an international level, it fails to support the need to satisfy cultural differences and preferences.

With globalization, companies which are continents apart can easily sign agreements and even monitor the level of compliance with the agreements made. Exchange of knowledge and information are tremendous benefits of globalization.
Distribution of health services over large areas have been made easier through electronic means. Globalization has brought about easy delivery of goods and services. Detection and prevention of humanitarian crisis are a lot easier due to globalization. And availability of larger number of goods has led to wider competition, a situation which leads to faster innovation and improvement of services. Globalization also brings about uniformity in the form of international standards.

Despite the above benefits, globalization has posed a threat in certain aspects of human life and endeavour. The free movement of people across borders has led to the transmission of diseases to areas where an occurrence of such diseases are naturally unlikely. In some situations, international standards may not be favourable to a particular region or culture. Again, the influx of a foreign workforce may lead to unhealthy competition with the local workforce. This may manifest as xenophobia which may also lead to unrest in such a polity.

Globalization as it is has brought about tremendous benefits which world leaders need to maintain and promote. However, it is not without demerits. Such demerits should be observed by world leaders with the aim of cushioning their effects or reducing them to the barest minimum.
