Car TalkRe: Never Buy A Nigerian Used Car by VeeBabs(m): 12:17pm On Nov 12, 2016
@OP: You are neglecting the fact that there are Nigerians who actually take very good maintenance care of their cars. And when they put up such cars for sale, DEALERS fall over themselves to snatch 'em up very quickly, so they could "touch them up" and resell them to you as TOKUNBO.

Yes, in case you didn't know, not all "tokunbo" are actually foreign used. Ever wondered why dealers don't like buying cars that have been "etched" with their registration numbers into their windows and mirrors and door handles and front grilles and headlamps?

It's bad for their resale effort!

Also, if you want to slightly reduce the likelihood of your car getting stolen, simply etch or engrave your registration number into your windows and headlights.

Car thieves would be discouraged from "moving" your car, because its resale value would be much less than otherwise. They prefer stealing "clean" or unmarked cars.

Edit: do you know how many car dealers have contacts staging round-the-clock "surveillance" on VGC, Lekki Phase I etc? They are standing-by to snatch up any car that is put up for sale by residents of such areas, because they believe that the well-to-do owners must have taken excellent care of such vehicles.

So, tell me, are such cars not also "Nigerian used"? You need to source your cars from the right places.

I know someone in Ikoyi whose uncle is about to sell a 2013 Range Rover Sport. It's "Nigerian used", but even your N10 million won't get you near his door. Car was serviced and maintained by the company from day of purchase till date. Warranty still very much active and valid.

"...not real mathematics class."

Clap for yourself, little boy. Where is the further maths in everything I wrote above?

I see you have ZERO affinity for knowledge, and NEGATIVE elasticity for correction, yet your ego reaches up even to the cirrus clouds.

Not surprising. It's the dearth in our education system in this country. Try graduating university and then you will see that life in the real world is far more "concrete and substance" than the abstractions of social media banter.

Better go read your books.

PhonesRe: Konga Black Friday - Price Go Fall Yakata This 2016 Nov. by VeeBabs(m): 4:54pm On Nov 05, 2016
rookidmart:
That's exactly what the person you quoted is talking about.
The week before the Black Friday they increase the prices of their goods, and when they reduce it on Black Friday, like you roughly pointed out, the price is even more than the original price.
eg. Take a sachet of water that is 10 Naira.
The week before the Black Friday they'll increase the price of water by, say, 70% to 77 Naira.
And on Black Friday, they'll reduce it by 80% which gives 15 Naira, which is still higher than the original cost price of 10 Naira.
So it's safe to say Nigerian 'Black Friday' is a scam.
FATAL ERROR (to use a computing term).

Perhaps you failed maths at school.

ONE: Check your calculations again and tell me how a 70% increase on N10 becomes N77 (seventy-seven). That's exactly the number you typed (in case you edit it later to make me a liar).

TWO: My comment was clearly about increasing and decreasing a given amount by a FIXED FACTOR. The same percentage. In your example, you increased by 70% and then reduced by 80%. You killed your logic by doing this.

THIRD: Let's even use your own example of +70% and -80%. You used N10. So let's try this:

N10 increased by 70% = N17 (seventeen).

Now decrease N17 by 80%.

First, how much is 80% of N17?

80/100 X N17 = 0.8 X N17 = N13.6

Now, let us SUBTRACT N13.6 from N17 (i.e. 80% reduction).

N17 - N13.6 = N3.4

Therefore, the new price = N3:40k. (Even LOWER than you expected, isn't it?)

So, kindly tell Nairaland how you arrived at N15.

Simple arithmetics.

I am disappointed.

FINALLY, to the part of my original comment you highlighted, when you increase and then decrease a given number by the SAME, FIXED factor (e.g. 70%), the amount you get will ALWAYS BE LOWER than the amount you started with.

Let this me your assignment:

Increase and then decrease the following random numbers by the percentages given.

- 520 by 10%
- 662 by 99%
- 1.2 million by 11.8%

I bet you, in each case, you will end up with a figure LOWER than the starting number.

Just make sure you don't make mistakes.

Now, tear down that rubbish comment you posted earlier (I know you wouldn't dare) and I will delete my correction. Or maybe not grin

For your information, there are people who have learned from my comment above, who would have otherwise been misled by yours.

From white Monday, price go gear up from the original price by 70% and on Black Friday, the price go FALL YAKATA by 69%. Konga I sight you in 3D.
Every good mathematician knows that when a number is INCREASED by a factor, say, 70%, DECREASING the new value by the same factor DOES NOT RESTORE IT TO ITS ORIGINAL VALUE.

Example:

Take N100.

Increase by 70% (N70) = N170.

Now, decrease N170 by 70% (N119).

N170 - N119...

What do you get?

Answer = N51.

Now, does your original N100 = N51?

No.

But you INCREASED and DECREASED by the same percentage?

Do the math yourself, if in doubt.

I'm not defending anybody, but even if a merchant does this "trick", he still ends up giving you nearly HALF the original price of an item.

Just pointing out the flaw in a common logic I've heard often.

AutosRe: Comfortable & Rugged 2008 Nissan XTERRA. Great For 9ja Road. Asking Price: ₦1.9m by VeeBabs(m):
kaeforum:
The 2008 Xterra all come with V6 Engines, 4 cylinder engines have been dispensed with .

How do you expect a 4 cylinder engine to pull a 4ton truck? undecided

Take note its a V6. cool
It's possible, man. Increase cylinder bore, increase engine capacity (e.g. 3.0L), and raise compression ratio (e.g. 11:1) and use premium fuel (RON 98+). With this combination, you could very easily hit 300+ horsepowers pull your 4-ton truck.

The trouble is, a bunch of other issues would pop up e.g. serious vibrations (V6's are quieter than I4's). You'd need to tune the engine performance output curve to optimise the RPM range (usually downward) where maximum power would be obtainable; torque converter (if auto trans) would need some tweaking.

But with good NVH (noise, vibration, heat) insulation, and a solid body construction, you'd be fine.

Alternatively, a diesel engine would give even more power and much more torque. Pairing it with a manual transmission would be perfect, as it would accelerate so well, you'd feel like you're driving a V6.

Finally, have you ever TURBOCHARGED or SUPERCHARGED an engine? A supercharged, 2.5L, 4-plug engine could easily hit 320hp.

For example, the 2000-2007 model Nissan X-trail comes with a 2.0L, 4-plug petrol engine variant that generates 280hp. I'm not joking. Imagine if that's a 3.0L engine, with larger pistons and higher compression ratio. I'm guessing 400hp would be a piece of cake.

"Overclocking" an engine (to borrow a word from computing) comes with peculiar issues. Maybe that's why car makers don't like to go there, except in performance or race cars.

By the way, this car doesn't weigh up to 4 tons. In fact, it has a curb weight of only 4,150 pounds (1,886 kg or 1.9 tons) and a gross weight of 5,200 pounds (2363 kg or 2.6 tons).

By comparison, a Corolla or a Civic (both standard 1.8L, 4-plug engines) weigh between 1,200 - 1,400 kg empty. An extra 500kg of weight could easily be taken care of by increasing the engine size (1.8L to 2.5L for instance) rather than cylinder numbers (I4 - V6).

And 2.4/2.5L 4-plug engines are quite common.

PoliticsRe: The Real Owners Of Oil Blocks In The Niger-Delta Exposed...(pics) by VeeBabs(m): 7:31am On May 27, 2016
Did anyone of you notice the words "Marginal Fields" in the title of the list posted?

What does the word "marginal" mean? Start with the dictionary.

Marginal fields are oil fields that have been almost depleted, with still a little more crude oil left in them.

LITTLE OIL.

They are auctioned off after the major operators are ready to drop, rather, DUMP them.

Check Google. Here's a definition I found.

"Marginal fields are oil and gas reserves usually too small for production to be economically viable for large oil companies. They are usually awarded to indigenous companies to explore considering the size of the reserves."

Did you hear that? It is basically a "throw way" oil field with little value left.

You can't own a marginal field and call yourself a major "oil block" owner. That's like buying a tokunbo, 2002 model Range Rover and trying to compete with owners of the latest model.

You have a Range Rover, true, but your "Rover" does not have the "Range" of the newest, 2016 model.

Stop this rubbish argument and post the names of owners of "juicy" oil blocks, still full of oil, not this marginal thing.

You'll get the full picture then.

Toyota does not use the "XLE" trim designation for the Matrix. I wonder why anyone would paste that there.

The Matrix comes only in "XRS" (sport), XR and Base trims. These are pasted behind the car except for the Base trim which is typically left blank.

This car above is most likely an XR, looking at the window panels and the side mirrors (assuming it's never been repainted).

Below are photos of the Base and XR model-trims. The top-level, high-performance XRS trim is quite rare though.

P.S. Congrats on the sale!

Relax, my friend. You obviously think the photo was taken in midair while the bullets were in flight during the War decades ago.

The bullets could have been picked up back then at wartime and then kept in a museum. The photo you see up there could well have been taken using modern photographic technology. The image quality and resolution has nothing to do with the age of the bullets.
