A Lagos businessman, Adeleke Adeyemi, has been arrested by Lagos Zone of the EFCC for issuing dud cheques to cover N800million loan given by Ecobank. EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, in a statement on Friday, April 9, said the suspect is also being accused of conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence, diversion of funds and money laundering. It was gathered that the accused, along with his accomplice, Odusanya Ayotunde Memphis (now at large), are directors at Wafa Aggregate Limited. Together, they approached Eco Bank Plc for a loan of N800million for the procurement of petroleum products from Covalent Oil & Gas Services Limited in October 2011. Upon receipt of the loan, Adeyemi and Memphis allegedly diverted the funds to their personal use and defaulted in paying back the loan. Investigation revealed that the five Diamond Bank Plc cheques of N10million each issued by the suspect and his accomplice were returned unpaid upon presentation. https://www.facebook.com/273102863056662/posts/1449214998778770/

About 250 Beggars at Ibadan took to the street today, Thursday to protest low patronage by members of the public following a recent rumour that some rich men usually ‘buy’ money from them for ritual purposes. According to the spokesperson for the beggars, Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, Serikin Hausawa of Hausawa Community, Oja’ba, Ibadan, the rumour has created deep hatred for his people. Abdullahi said: “The reports that some wealthy people are buying money from beggars, including the physically-challenged people, for money rituals is not true. “As a result of the claim that some ritualists do buy money from these beggars, there has been public resentment against these innocent people. “What we know is that traders, hawkers and commercial drivers do come to these beggars who are mainly blind and lame people, to change money (get smaller denominations). “We need to clear our names so that people will not be punishing us for offences we don’t know anything about.” https://www.correctng.com/beggars-in-ibadan-protest-low-patronage/

Two suicide bombers who blew themselves up at an Indonesian cathedral on Palm Sunday were newlyweds who belonged to a pro-Islamic State extremist group, police said Monday, as they raided the couple’s home. About 20 people were wounded in the powerful explosion outside the church in Makassar city on Sulawesi island while worshippers celebrated the start of Holy Week. Both suspects were killed instantly when they rode a motorbike into the compound of the church, setting off an improvised explosive device known as a pressure-cooker bomb, police said. On Monday, Indonesian authorities said the pair had been married for about six months and that the man was in his mid-twenties. They were identified only by their initials. “The investigation is ongoing including looking at whether there were others involved,” National Police spokesman Argo Yuwono said. Counter-terror units raided the couple’s home and other locations in Makassar, a port city of about 1.5 million, as well as in the capital Jakarta, as they searched for bombs, weapons and other evidence, police said. A local resident said the male suspect was a street food seller who lived in a rented home near his parents’ residence. “As a kid he was nice… But as he grew older he didn’t really socialise around here,” Nuraini, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told AFP. Police said the couple were members of Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), an extremist group blamed for series of attacks, including 2018 suicide bombings in Indonesia’s second-biggest city Surabaya. On Monday, officials said 15 people remained in hospital, although the extent of their wounds remained unclear. Four had been discharged, they added. Sunday’s explosion at the main Catholic cathedral in Makassar happened just after congregants finished celebrating Palm Sunday, the first day of Holy Week, which commemorates Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem. It comes a week before Easter. JAD was also implicated in a 2019 cathedral suicide bombing in the Philippines committed by a married Indonesian couple. That attack killed worshippers and security forces. Indonesia, the world’s biggest Muslim majority nation, has long struggled with attacks by Islamist extremists, including the 2002 Bali bombings which killed more than 200, mostly foreign tourists. https://m.guardian.ng/news/world/indonesia-church-suicide-bombers-were-newlyweds-police/
