TV/Movies / Re: Kunle Afolayan's OCTOBER 1: Critic's Review by VillageBoi(m): 9:54pm On Oct 02, 2014
unmask: I don't know if there is a reading problem on nairaland, but seeing people criticise the op because they thought he said half of a yellow sun is better than october 1st is quite dumbfounding. The op is a critic and believe it or not he is meant to be unbiased no matter how you think the movie was. Probably we have been used to numerous mediocre movies, we see the next good one as the best ever regardless of glaring shortcomings. Maybe when we begin to watch movies with an open mind we can begin to see shortcomings that we otherwise won't notice because of our bias. Finally, Kunle Afolayan is a good director, but there is no denying he still has a lot of work to do to make him even better. Probably you guys should jump to all those great hollywood movies and see what the critics had to say about them. You could start with "now you see me"
Well said. Big nail on the head @ bolded part... so true.

Couldn't disagree with you more! I just watched it and as I speak, the credits is rolling. It is a very boring and pointless movie! In the whole 100min of the movie, he spoke only 3 times combined not more than 90sec. Watch "cast away" tom hanks, it's similar but a much much way better movie.
As mentioned before no yawa. Na very, very different tastes we get, for example, I would never in a million years rate 'Think Like A Man Too' as a 9/10 like you did. Just saying.

tpia6: 1. Ivory Tower
2. Transcendence
3. Think like a Man Too
4. Blended
5. Draft Day

6. All is Lost

Of this set I'll pick 'All Is Lost' as the best of the bunch - just my opinion before yawa gas. It's a masterclass in tension and IMO is brilliant considering the screenplay is only 31 pages long. There was a good thread on the film but sadly the earlier hacking of this site wiped off a lot of threads & posts.

I believe the acting will be intense and amazing but charlie, I don't just buy the idea of dating computer! It just plain silly and I can't enjoy a movie that I believe is silly.
Actually the idea is pretty realistic considering the age we live in. You do realise that films do not have to be governed by the physical & scientific laws on 'earth'? Is the fantasy of a horse flying is more to your liking?
Look at the now famous 'Aliens' I believe it took a while to sell as no one got it then the simple logline "In space no one can hear you scream" (which is not actually true scientifically) sold it and the rest is history. The film 'Her' is not a weird concept at all and is quite a possibility in the future.
Anyway shaa, you don't like the idea and that is no big deal... each to their own. But it is a very good film.

XketchDesigns: Her.. I haven't watched, I mean why waste 1.5 hrs to watch a movie about a guy that dates his computer?
Actually of all the films he asked about 'Her' beats every single one of them by miles!

By rating the remaining order is -
'The Grand Budapest Hotel'
'The Internship'
'The latest transformers movie' which is rubbish and...
The remaining two are at bottom of the pile of Hollywood regular stupidity.

You're welcome. Just remember that almost everything costs so much more here than in the US - a practically one-stop-shop for filmmakers is the famous B&H New York (the general rule is only buy 'universal' cameras and DON'T buy lights & certain electronics there as per the US 60Hz vs UK/Naija using 50Hz) - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ Oh and I believe they recently added Naija to the PayPal list.

pls do you know the price for 70d also can you tell me about the 7d mk11 features and the price.moreover is there anyother dslr or dslt that has very nice video quality like 7d and also cheap as 7d be it nikon sony etc

Just Google prices depending on where you want to buy. I personally will probably never buy another Canon DSLR again as they are two years behind 'the norm' in tech features... toys out there are have been doing 1080p @ 60fps for years and Canon has only just added that to the 7D MK II and want to brag about it? smh what idiots. Common phone dey do 120fps and some even 240... I beg.

As for the 7D MK II price; I'm in the UK so I ignore 'release date' prices... you should look to US prices ($1800 - body only yet in the UK body only is almost $2500... for what?). Anyway, let's say performance-wise it betters almost every other Canon DSLR but don't be an early-adopter as you'll only find out any 'problems' way too late.
This is the time of the year to just wait and see what everyone else is doing... even brand new comer Samsung has just today abi yesterday dropped the 'NX1' a 4K resolution 'DSLR' out-of-the-blue.

ReubenAbati: 7D MK II that was just released TODAY.

Villageboi...You wan kill person abi? Why you no kukuma tell him to get an AJA CION 4K camera? grin
Ah my guy, cameras plenti na but let's be honest the OP is specifically looking for a certain 'price point' which we all do. Not many people will 'own' the CION, it's more of a rental-house camera. What is it... 12 stops of DR? When one can get 13 stops out of much better and cheaper cams. And I seriously doubt it'll be a good run 'n' gun cam as the lowlight performance will not be there.
TV/Movies / Re: 70d And 7d. Which Is Better For Video Shooting by VillageBoi(m): 7:17pm On Sep 15, 2014
The video quality is the same but the 70D has autofocus during video. BUT and a big but is the 7D MKII announced today is better than both of them. By the way the focus on the 7D is fine, nothing wrong with that at all, but yeah the overheating is a pain in the behind.

TV/Movies / Re: Which Nigerian Actor Or Actress Can Win An Oscar by VillageBoi(m): 8:21am On Sep 08, 2014
prof800:
Where on planet earth have you been?

@phrezzz...
Winning an Oscar or not winning an Oscar is not important...
...but to answer your question, "Any Nigerian actor CAN actually win the Oscars."
It is not a difficult feat and I wouldn't want to discuss the clumsy fuzz.

My broda I dey o, just busy-busy. How now?

By the way your post is brilliant! The OP did say 'Nigerian' actors and you killed it. Even those that are slagging off 'Nollywood' based actors have NO IDEA what they are talking about - these people are 'actors' - they only seem poor and incapable simply because our 'writers & directors' are poor... simple!

Let's look at a timeline -
Lupita did 'Shuga' 2009-2012... then her VERY NEXT thing was '12 Yrs A Slave'. There is not a single Nigerian - even including what people are calling kpako Nollywood based actors that that exact circumstance couldn't have happened to, hence my earlier post was simply -
VillageBoi:
Given the right material, right acting tuition and right directing I'll say pretty much ANY of them can. Not that it's important.

Any Nigerian actor - in fact let me even say any Nairalander sef... given the three things I mentioned above CAN WIN AN OSCAR -
Oscars no be awards again? Oscar na rocket science? No! Oscar na magic? No!
Are we same Nigerians not winning world-class awards in every other field from Medicine to Literature? Filmmaking is practically the only field in Nigeria in which we are the laziest bunch of pretty stupid people shaa.

The reason I said the Oscars are not important is because the magic, the rocket science, the calculus, the complex engineering ALL has to happen somewhere else - during the filmmaking process; starting with the 'idea', the writing and practically nailing it all in PRE-production.
How many Nigerian DIRECTORS have actually sat down to study and figure out 'the psychology of the audience'? practically zilch I bet.

The problem with Nigeria and Nigerians is their 'spirits' are so broken from time. The very second a child starts to show inquisitiveness it is battered out of him/her - kpa, kpa, flog, kick, slap - Shut-up Sit-down, Shut-up Sit-down, Shut-up Sit-down. That innocence from the fairies of 'visual creativity' is never allowed to develop fully so the produced 'mediocre' films now look like - "dayum, that stuff is seriously good!"

I beg make I no tok too much. I personally still stick to the 'problem' (if we want to call it that) being the writing & directing.
Seriously people, the 'acting' is not the issue - that's an easy fix. So yes anyone even a Nairalander, as mentioned before, can win an Oscar, afterall even complete NON-ACTORS have won Oscars in the 'acting' category. Feel free to read the article below.

Non actors winning awards - http://wallstcheatsheet.com/entertainment/5-non-actors-who-have-won-oscars-for-acting.html/?a=viewall

Really good posts from Obi1kenobi, is the industry 'trying'? Yes. However, you are completely right in that the industry is more about quantity than quality -
Obi1kenobi: Flooding the market with poor quality films is nothing to brag about but Nigerians believe it's something to brag about.

I guess the main issue is 99% of the people in the industry are in it first and foremost for a quick buck. But then again how easy is it to be in this for the 'art' - especially in a place like Nigeria - I guess pretty difficult.

Obi1kenobi: Finding a way to really communicate with the audience to experience things from a different, original vantage point...
Aspire to produce more ambitious projects discussing more serious issues that stimulate an adult mind - I don't need you producing movies with a children's "tales by moonlight" moral or religious lesson at the end. We aren't kids.
Very true but how much thought do we put into things? How willing are we to 'think outside the box'? Especially when the bulk of people are interested in 'celebritydom'.

Obi1kenobi: The greatest problem of the Nigerian film industry is the total lack of organization and the lack of professionalism to truly set the industry apart from the marketers and traders that run the industry...
Or the actors who only see the industry as a meal-ticket - often because they have nothing else to do with their lives...
They don't live for the passion of producing something truly brilliant and original...
Straight up. And as has been said so many times Nigerians HATE to hear the 'truth' if it isn't praising the mediocrity that exists in almost EVERYTHING we do.

We all talk dedication and passion but how many are 'really' ready or truly willing to put in the work?

Obi1kenobi: It's a shame the best African movies have to be shot by foreigners. Or South Africans. Movies like Hotel Rwanda or Sarafina tell the stories that Nollywood are incapable of telling. The few attempts at such things I've seen have been highly underwhelming.
Yes it is a big shame and the 'few' attempts, as you rightly mentioned, have been very underwhelming. I've said it in a million threads and I won't deny it... our industry has a huge issue with LAZINESS.

I'll post a couple of clips or so to do with the film 'Boyhood' by Richard Linklater - he made the film over 12yrs by shooting a bit at a time. Now that is dedication. People take note - I am not for one second saying we should be doing this - I am posting it as an example for arguments sake. How someone can take a seemingly impossible idea and THINK hard enough to find a solution.

Boyhood - Trailer

An interview with the director

Will things in the industry get better and better? I have no doubt that they will. If any of you have the chance please do go to this thread on the film 'A Place In The Stars' by Steve Gukas. I don't know much about it but it looks promising.

A very good looking trailer.

"A Place In The Stars (2014) - A Steve Gukas Film.
Synopsis; Kim Dakim (Gideon Okeke), a young lawyer gets a client with a case that leaves him conflicted. He has information that can save many lives if he passes it on, but he also stands to make millions if he doesn’t. In a very corrupt country where everyone loves money and no one cares how you make it, Kim sees this as his chance to make it big.

Problem is Diokpa Okonkwo (Segun Arinze) the king pin of the counterfeit medical drugs trade who his case is against, doesn’t play nice.

He kills at will to protect his multi million dollar trade and is not pulling punches against Kim and his client. He has Kim’s client in jail and assassins out to silence Kim.

Suddenly Kim is at war on two fronts; one to stay alive and the other against his conscience and everything he has been raised to believe is right."

I also know people are thinking "Ah, we must have the biggest, baddest camera." No you don't need that. Shoot on whatever you CAN get.
