Abeg, when sending the mail ask him for the download link of enemy of the rising sun.

The guy's concept is unique, characters are wow, isi agu and co. A guy with such concept suppose to have become a big boy man by now, maybe he should be thinking of turning that 'mark of uru' into real life feature or maybe an animated TV series, what do u think?

Sent him an email, hopefully he'll come back with the info you have asked.

I think 'Mark Of Uru' was a series, that's how I first saw it and I think it picked up a number of awards too.

Ok cool. There were some other animation clips he showed me after 'Mark of Uru' & 'Enemy of...', I can't remember the name. I'll email him later and ask if they are anywhere online. The quality was soooo much better... the guy sabi this thing well-well. He's a member here too and on a different site where I think I first knew him from but I don't think he logs on much.

tonyayo1: VillageBoi do have the link to 'ENEMY OF THE RISING SUN' alone? not this one that came with mark of uru.

That mark of uru is worth watching, enemy of the rising sun is something else, just at the beginning when I exausted my MB.

I saw all those years ago when they were all in single episodes. I don't know where they are now; I cant find them but from 31mins in the video posted 'Enemy Of the Rising Sun' starts. Didn't watch it today so I don't know if it's the exact same one but I guess it is.

prof800: What is 'mark of uru'?
It's a very old animation by a brilliant Nigerian animator that was light years ahead of what any Nigerian was doing at the time.

*Went back to youtube to search for MARK OF URU Ep 4*

Teehee, no be me write the article... but the thing cause yawa wink
Oh I know we're getting there... I'm still all for we need to keep improving EVERY DAY... if that dey vex people because they think we HAVE ARRIVED then so be it. Let them go and watch BTS videos of a whole James Cameron learning stuff on HIS OWN sets off crew and techies.

Ah 'Mark Of Uru'... maybe I should write an animation and get to work with that guy again... he's brilliant!

BluIvy:
But behind this mask of ultra-confidence lies a fragile self-esteem, vulnerable to the slightest criticism.

What I would not know is whether a personality disorder could be assigned to a larger group of people? Because this disorder best explains most Nigerians to me.
Interesting post.

Especially as artists I don't think criticism is an easy thing to take but we do have find out how to evaluate such. The second we put our work out there the criticism can't be avoided... how we respond to it is pretty important. You rightly point out that 'behind the mask of ultra-confidence is a fragile self-esteem' and that is true of most artists... we do constantly wonder 'is this (the work) good enough?' When we make something it is 'our baby' and possibly that is where vulnerability steps in but let's be honest... sometimes we see a baby and it is downright 'fugly'... we've all seen some of those. The 'parents' (makers of the art) still love it flaws and all.
Then you mention 'the collective', hmmmmmm, hard one - what do we call that? National pride? Of the different types of pride it's probably 'stubborn pride' - can't be told, won't be told, won't back down even when we know we are wrong type of pride.

We still have such a long, long way to go as far as 'great' filmmaking is concerned. We best humble ourselves and really think about that.

TonySpike: What is missing in nollywood is to ability to fuse thought provoking storylines with logical and intellectually organised plots.
Ik09:
Filmmaking is a lot more than having a story to tell -knowing HOW to tell that story is just as important.

Frankly, I think our film industry has become too comfortable.
Obi1kenobi:
Nobody is asking Nollywood to shoot movies portraying Nigerians as forest-dwelling cannibals. They're asking that Nollywood makes films of substance that portray our culture, history, politics etc to the world and do it with competence, assiduous attention to detail and professionalism.
We consume [current Nollywood] because it's all we have. The same way we endure our misery in Nigeria because it's all we have. That doesn't mean we should laud what deserves criticism.

Any attempt at anything remotely stimulating to the intellect in Nigerian movies often reveals how far behind we really are.
The first step to rectifying such a problem is an admission of shortcomings.

The above posters, and others, have added a few home truths to the debate... but can we hear what they've said over the din of our pride? We shall see.

kenraj: @ Speedyboy, Villageboi, Ikamenze, sholay2011 and nextstep....

You guys made really matured, concise and explicit points. I admire your maturity at corrections and not apportioning blames or using derogatory and vulgar languages on each other after admitting your errors. It's people like you that can make us grow wise and correctional and not some boastful lads who acts as "know it all" on this forum.

Kudos to you guys and more grease to your shoulders for your points and rendering apologies where you all went wrong.
Thanks for that. That was a really nice thing to say. Hopefully we will all keep on doing our best or trying to.

Originalsly: You say it's good to see our Nigerian movie makers stepping up but you promptly stab them in the back by advertising sources where people can download and watch the movies for free. Is this how we encourage them to step up? ...by working against them recoveringthir investments? This is sad.

sholay2011: @villageboi...Thanks for your post.

@Ikamenze...Bro, your post was eye-opening (along with what speedyboi wrote) but the end was a let-down. You can 'correct' people and drive home your point without making people feel you're 'attacking' them (I assume that's not your intent).

Like my script thread, many of your corrections were valid but I had to sound 'silly' in my response 'cos I felt you were 'attacking my person'.

I'm just being truthful, not an attempt to defend a friend: Villageboi. If it was Villageboi too that does this, I would even take it personally and may spew invectives sef.

Learn to commmunicate without sounding nasty. Thanks. smiley

Thanks Sholay, none of us are perfect, we all do make mistakes and we sometimes say things we shouldnt... but hey we're human. Ikamenze does post quite a bit of pretty good stuff but he also resorts to slightly personal attacks in various threads. As you said, it might not be his intention hence me not seriously going one off on him. But there are other ways to vent opinions without making it that personal. I'm no saint, never have claimed to be, I used to be a bit rough around the edges my early days here... to the extent in some threads now people say 'That's not you' - Even I have had to learn better ways of criticism and encouragement - at the end of the day I guess we all want the same goal.
TV/Movies / Re: Nollywood Nightmare At Durban Int Film Fest by VillageBoi(m): 9:02am On Aug 11, 2014
@ Ikamenze

First let me tell you that I did click ‘like’ on your post because some of the content was good. However, I’ll also say you’re very wrong in the last part of your post in laying the claim that you ‘know me’, what I do or don’t do to the extent that you feel you need to attack me as a person. If I post something and you have an issue with it, feel free to have a debate about it.

You state I’m neither ‘here nor there’. I’ve always been clear on exactly where I stand – We need to tell far better stories, period. I’ve never shifted from that view and if you have not figured that out by now then that’s your opinion and tough if it gives you a headache, as it clearly does.
How many times have you been to see a movie, you didn’t like it and you asked for your money back? Never! How many times have you been to a restaurant you didn’t like the food and so decided to become a chef? Never! How many times have you driven on a pot-holed road and then decided to become an engineer? Never!
It’s the regular and quite frankly childish Nigerian argument “If you don’t like something then where is your own?”

Please point me in the direction of the law that states, “If you don’t like certain art you must make yours and make it better?”. One does not have to, and again to show your lack of knowledge about me, how come you are not aware that in various threads when people have attacked others for not liking A, B or C with the regular “where is your own” I’ve always said ‘they don’t have to make anything, they are audience members’? Ikamenze, it’s ridiculous for you to say I’m here ‘forming chairman’ or playing King of the Internet… please do feel free to bring out any posts where I’ve said that to you.

You say “We need to start telling our story WELL.” If that’s what you want to do then feel free, I’m not stopping you. Or is your annoyance about me once having dissected a script of yours? I don’t know you, I don’t know what you do or what you’re not doing and it’s simply none of my business and neither will I attack you for that. Fine, you have an issue with me having a bit of knowledge and being on Nairaland… I’m no threat to whatever plans you have, as said before feel free to do your thing. But doesn’t that beg the question “What are YOU doing on Nairaland?”. Don’t answer that because no one has the right to question that.

Half of a Yellow Sun vs trailblazers like Last Flight to Abuja ,Phone Swap, Maami and The Return of Jennifer (N10Million).

Unfair comparisson!!!

In the 'context' of things I don't think it's an unfair comparison... the article is talking about 'Nigerian films at Nigerian cinemas and their 'domestic' performance' which is actually important information. And I'm pretty sure the other films mentioned didn't have the 'same' budget.

A Nigerian journalist was discussing the existence of Rwandan cinema, when, perhaps in jest, he was asked by a filmmaker from that country: “is it not better to produce nothing than to produce crap?”

And on this very last sentence, my own response is -

Absolutely not! It's far better to produce crap than nothing at all because by producing crap one is immediately on the first rung of the ladder to 'learning' and greater things.
*Ahem* errrrmmmmm Rwanda produces what?!?!

Akbee: ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ has set a new first weekend box office record in Nigeria.

The movie has been able to surpass other box office trailblazers like Last Flight to Abuja (N8.35Million), Phone Swap (N3.72Million),
Maami (N3.30Million), and The Return of Jennifer (N10Million).

Vanguard! What rubbish and lazy reporting!! So they write all this and don't even include the figures for the film in question? smh.
