TravelRe: Nigerians In Chinese Jails_ Please Watch by violent(m): 10:49pm On May 04, 2012
MRbrownJAY: bro, we cant sit here and claim that they are all innocent of their crimes, especially when we all know too well about the mentality of our dear brothas and sistas out there. yes, a few of them might be innocent of the crime they are accused of (just like inmates in the US, UK etc) but it certainly doesnt take away the gravity of the issue.
I haven't argued that they all must have been innocent of the crimes they were accused of, but the fact that quite a handful may have been convicted wrongly and without fair trial makes this all the more disturbing. In fact, it actually does take away the gravity of the criminal issues as argued. You can't punish an innocent man just because no one was willing to fight for him...You can't simply lock him behind bars without informing his family or his government while taking away the years in his life. That's the only issue i think is worth discussing!!!

also, i wont try to say whats right or wrong IN CHINA. the Chinese Gov is the ultimate body to decide on that......and if anyone is not happy with the laws in this country or their judicial system, they can stay the hell away (or behave themselves while there). many foreigners (myself included) have lived in china and never seen a police station holding cell, let alone a jail cell.
The fact that you have never seen a police station or holding cell does not mean they don't exist!!!.....and there's absolutely no evidence to argue that all those who have been locked up were locked up for not behaving themselves. If people were locked up without informing their families and their governments, how then can we be sure of the true circumstances under which they were locked up or even more importantly their safety?

One of my favorite quotes goes: "A corpse is just a corpse until that corpse is your pops".... If one man suffers injustice somewhere, who knows who the next man may be? If i were locked up somewhere unjustly and my rights to freedom denied, i would love to have a little shrewed of hope that someone with some humane rational sense out there will be fighting my cause, not condemning me along with several others who were being rightly punished for their crimes. For God's sake, these people have families and some even have aged folks. If some of them are not guilty of their crimes, then we ought to be fighting their cause, not throwing mortars at them!!!

China doesnt really care of the nationality of the culprits, as we all witnessed with the execution of the Brit Akmal Shaikh for drug smuggling, while the whole British Gov was pleading with China not to....so it sure aint got nothing to do with being Nigerian.
My argument here is that China is definitely more cautious with the way it handles British and American nationals. If China has strong evidence proving that individuals from these countries are guilty of the crime they are accused of, then it has a right to stand its ground and it will....otherwise, China understands that it does risk a lot of diplomatic row if it happens to fabricate charges against indivuduals from these countries. In the case of Akmal Shaikh, Britain several representations to China and pulled all the diplomatic strings it could. Outside this, i haven't read of similar cases in recent times. China really does understand that the governments from each of these countries give a fuccck about their citizens abroad....No one cares if 1 million Nigerians get slaughtered in China!!!
TravelRe: Nigerians In Chinese Jails_ Please Watch by violent(m):
MRbrownJAY: by the look of these Chinese jails, these criminals are better off staying there, as i doubt 9ja jail look any better, or treat their inmates better.
do inmates in 9ja get 3 square meals a day? what is better in Nigerian jails comparing to the Chinese ones? what sane Nigerian in Europe/Australia/US/Canada jails would want to be transfered to Naija?

as they say:"if you cant stand the heat, then stay the hell out the kitchen!"
I am very very embarrassed and shocked to say the least! This is nothing but GREED and these dumbheads know very well that they have children and wive but never stopped a minute to think about the repercusions. I feel very sorry for the families they left behind! Its a shame too that most of these people here are IGBOS! Some of our people are just very GREEDY ! !
Your post and a few others does assume that the individuals serving jail terms in China must be really guilty of their crimes and deserved to be punished accordingly. Your post rules out the possibility that a few people may have been caught within the seriously alarming Chinese system which shows absolutely no regard for human rights or the rights to fair hearing or fair justice.

China is not the UK or the US. In China, it is you against the system, and you stand absolutely no chance if you can't speak or understand Chinese ------- you simply can't argue your case in Chinese courts and your guilt or lack of it rest in the hands of people who wouldn't even recognize the rights of their own citizens how much more you from a country stereotyped for corruption?

It doesn't even help that Nigerian's foreign policies are in shambles. hear the illiterate Nigerian minister saying "I was really shocked when i got the list, and we don't know what to do" shocked shocked ....i haven't yet heard of a more distressing statement since the last time i heard Jonathan spoke about terrorism being a global phenomenon.. The Chinese government will think twice before coming up with ridiculous charges for an American or British citizen, sure no one wants a Hilary Clinton or William Hague causing a serious showdown on their doorstep, but who gives a Fuccck about the little nasty Nigerian?.

My heart truly goes out to the families who have to bear the brunt of either these men's irresponsibility or the bitter taste of the insane Chinese system.
here we go again, im sure the poll is accurate; since i have stated again and again that a few people can only take hold of a whole nation such as nigeria and hold it hostage and rule over it for so long and plunder it so ruthlessly with no consequences and for so long without the tacit approval of the people!

what about all those drum beatings and dances yall have anytime there's a new ruler...no matter how he gets there, guns of politicshuh

pls. i have also tried to inform nigerians that they r some of the most self-unaware group in the world!

so, no one should be surprised...it is known in psychology that there is quite often a huge difference between what people say they feel and their actual feeling. lol
I agree completely with you. The poll must be accurate and reflective of Mama Ngozi's view of the current leadership especially given that her three daughters are now forced to walk 6 miles to school since the oil subsidy grand theft removal. I'm sure the poll also includes the thoughts of Musa who by streak of unlucky fate happen to have lost an eye to the ugly menace of Boko Haram.... perhaps you are even right...none of these guys mean what they say, all those screaming blood of how tired they are about the incessant pains and burdens visited on them by their leaders only do so for the media attention...they all seceretly admired the president's bowler hat and his 1 billion naira appetite..

You know what? I've infact just spoken to 4 of my friends and the 4 of them voiced their approval for President Jonathan, never mind they've not been to Nigeria before, who cares?....I should now publish the results of my findings about how 100 percent of Nigerians approve of the President's leadership!

LiteratureRe: Not Sure Of Your Writing Skills? Post Here And We Can Help Each Other Improve by violent(m):
@Mostojr: Here are my thoughts regarding your post.

In the local newspaper article, the writer states that the residents of San Perdito would be best served if they voted out Montayo, the current mayor, and reelected Varro, the city's former mayor. This conclusion is obviously flawed because it is based on hollow assumptions that require further strengthening with additional information.
I feel the ending of your first paragraph my contain items that sounded a bit too obstinate. Rather than state that the view is "obviously flawed" and "completely hollow", i'd rather state that "The conclusion reached by this writer is based on several assumptions that appears to be lacking in merit and may require additional information."

Firstly, the writer states that since Montayo got into office, the population of the city of Sanperdito has decreased. However, there is nothing, in the write-up, that shows the percentage decrease of the population of the the city of San Perdito. In order to convince readers, the writer should have stated the percentage decrease. This assumption is weak, because a negligible decrease in the populations-like 1 or 2 percent-is not enough reason to assume that the current mayor is not doing a good job. In addition to that, a decrease in the population is not equivalent to a decrease in a city's workforce. It is possible that as the population was shrinking, the employeable population doubled. This might be the main reason behind the increase in the unemployement rate in the city.
I feel it's a bit dangerous to assume what has not been explicitly stated in the original article or what can not be backed up using data provided by the author. I haven't seen anywhere in the post where the author stated that the current mayor is not doing a good job. It could be that the author's intention is that Montoya is in fact doing a great job but lags behind relatively compared to Varro's achievements--- again, you can't tell unless explicitly stated in the article.

Additionally, your arguments as stated in this paragraph does not appear to nullify the author's position that voting out Montoya and reelecting Varro, will best serve the interest of the people, based on increasing unemployment and reduction in population. I feel that from the ending part of your post, you may have only succeeded in providing a plausible justification for the increase in the rate of unemployment. This doesn't necessarily argue against the view that unemployment rate has increased and the people do not like this.

You also mentioned that "a decrease in the population is not equivalent to a decrease in a city's workforce"....while this may be true, You and I also know that a decrease in population could also be a causative agent for an overall decrease in a city's workforce, so rather than use words that implies taking a definite position on an argument that could go either way such as "not equivalent", i may be inclined to write "a decrease in population may not necessarily imply a decrease in a city's workforce"

Secondly, the writer states that two businesses have closed for each new business that has opened. Here too, the writer does not reveal the type of businesses that have closed, and the type of businesses that are opening. Merely assuming that this is bad for the city is wrong.
You are the one being examined, your position is not to state that the writer's view must be wrong because what you think must be right. Your position is to point out the weakness in the writer's argument.

In a situation where the new businesses that are opening are way more profitable than the businesses that are closing, San Perdito might actually be on the path to economic growth.
Your argument in quotes above and subsequent lines imply that profitability of new business while ignoring the survival of existing business is enough indicator for economic growth.
What about the size of the businesses that are closing shops? If Dangote closed his cement manufacturing plant that employs thousands of Nigerians and the following week, my Uncle opens up his local shop where he sells palm wine and employs just two people, your argument implies that this isn't a situation that should ring alarm bells so long as my uncle makes profit?

Overall, i feel the things you may have missed from the original article are the assumptions stated by the the author;

-- That an increase in population and reduction in unemployment rate will best serve the interest of the people; while the latter may be true, the writer does not explain why the people must desire an increase in population growth which could increase the pressure and demand for limited economic resources.

--- That these two economic indicators are directly affected by the individual that has been elected as the Mayor; This line of thought ignores individual behavioral patterns, current economic cycle and important demographics such as retirement age. It could be the case that the global economy was experiencing a boom in the four years that Varro served and things have may have quickly changed since then. There's no evidence to suggest that unemployment may have varied differently if both Varro and Montoya have served in the same economic climate.

--- The writer had stated that while Montoya served as a Mayor, two businesses have closed for each business that have opened. This argument implicitly assumes that two businesses are better than one notwithstanding the overall contribution of each business to San Perdito's economy. This argument may also be further strengthened if similar statistics were provided for the duration of Varro's mayoral service. Without this, it may be difficult to see why reelecting Varro may best serve the people's interest.
PoliticsRe: Senator David Mark In Critical Condition. Flown To Israel For Treatment by violent(m):
Senator Mark surely understands that there are more than a thousand hospitals in Nigeria and equally likely many thousands of home trained medical experts that could attend to his flagging health. Why travel to Israel?

...ah of cos, none of these hospitals are adequately equipped and perhaps even more frightening is the fact that the local medical experts are under-trained, overworked and underpaid miserable fellows.

Senator Mark doesn't have an incentive to fix this terrible mess even though his office carries enough influence to effect the much needed change....Senator Mark and his family could always jet off to Israel or the United States, the rest of us Nigerians should make do with the terrible medical facilities and frustrated doctors.

In as much as i really want to, It's difficult for me to wish Senator Mark a prompt recovery. I respect more, people who can put their money where their mouth is. If you don't have enough faith in the Medical system after four years of being a Senate President, the individual deserves to be hanged by the balls and his dead body shot for being a miserable failure.

In most sane places, a petition to the committee on public petition will normally require a minimum number of signatures before the house can consider it of public interest. In the UK, you will normally need close to a hundred thousand signatures.

You see, these cases are worth investigating at the tax-payer's expense, since we really don't have any pressing problems that ought to be debated and deliberated on in this country. There's no point spending time to ponder on child abuse cases or police murders; there's no point considering the lifestyle of Nigerians since the removal of fuel subsidy; there's no point discussing why cows happen to stray about on our runways or the epileptic power supply which most of us have grown up getting used to.
