Religion / Re: Give Your 'Tithes' And Offerings To The Less Fortunate In Church by violent(m): 12:37pm On Mar 03, 2013
In my experience, since i landed in Oyinbo land, I haven't been to a single church where tithing is preached, which is why you see all dem Oyinbo are living in Poverty and poor health because they refuse to part with a tenth of their earnings. Compare that with what applies in my homeland, where tithing is aggressively preached and the people of God prospereth in abundant wealth, and health. Hallelujah somebady!!!!

For those of you who for one reason or the other are unable to make it to church on Sundays, you can be forgiven for this, but just so you don't miss out on the opportunity to bring a tenth of your offerings to the Lord, I will be setting up an e-payment account where you could forward your payments for onward passage to the Lord of Hosts. Can i get a "humm humm humm humm"? Can i get an amen somebaddy!!!!

Do not ignore this message!! Remember, the Lord has promised and He will do it, can i get an Amen Somebaddy!! He said, he shall open up the gates of heaven and pour our blessings. Somebaddy say "POUR"!!! say "POUR". Yes, yesss, i can feel it!!!

Its becoming obvious this dude is probably gonna walk free.

You can't be too sure.

Oscar may have actually hurt his chances of freedom once the case goes to trial. He already signed an unusual affidavit, something he is not actually required to do, laying out all his defense in detail before pieces of evidence are stringed together and forensic results come in. Once further scientific evaluation of the crime scenes begin to show some inconsistencies with his sworn affidavit, he may have secured is ticket for a really long jail term
Science/Technology / Re: Do Animals Mourn Too? Yes They Do...... by violent(m): 12:01pm On Feb 23, 2013
An army dog which died of a broken heart hours after his handler was shot dead has been awarded the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross.

Colleagues said army dog handler Liam Tasker was inseparable from his spaniel, Theo, and so it was to the end. When Lance Corporal Tasker was shot dead in southern Afghanistan, his dog survived the shooting only to suffer a fatal heart attack when it returned to the British base at Camp Bastion.

Tasker, 26, was on patrol north of Nahr-e-Saraj in Helmand province on Tuesday with the spaniel, which was trained to search for arms and explosives, when they were caught in gunfire. He died from his injuries.

Despite these, many wouldn't cease their hostility towards animals. Those of you who wondered why some of us choose to be vegetarians, well, there you have it.

Yoruba_Omoge:

True. But how do you prove that beyond a reasonable doubt?
What does he gain from her demise?

Neighbors have heard screams which imply that there were arguments. There are also rife indications of domestic abuse. A shot to the girl's hip could imply someone running for her life. He doesn't need to gain anything from her demise. If your argument is based on anger, an instant emotion, you don't need to prove that there was something to be gained from the victim's demise. His actions thereafter are consistent with regret for acting on anger, i.e calling his friend before emergency services, trying to resuscitate her on his own without calling for help, when there is nothing more he could do and since there are no other witnesses except the victim, he knew he had to come up with a quick story. "I thought she was an intruder, so i killed her".

It is for the Judge to decide if it is okay to shoot with the aim of killing whoever is locked up inside your bathroom as long as you think your guests are asleep in their beds and you feel such persons using the bathroom must be an intruder.

Yoruba_Omoge: If he really did kill her intentionally, what would be the motive?

A control freak with anger issues who spends his time at a shooting range each time he couldn't sleep, and gets by using steroids? You don't really need a motive, anything could set him off.

Afam4eva: This comment from Yahoo got me thinking

"it was pitch-black, but he found his legs, found his gun, found his way downstairs and back upstairs, found the bathroom door and shot 4 times and hit his target...he must be a bat..."

This is not really hard. If you have been living in the same house for years, you could find and do anything even if it was pitch-black.

I personally believe the dude is guilty of murder. His story just doesn't seem to have any legs (pun intended). This is OJ Simpson replayed South African style, all over again.

You "think" your girlfriend was in the bedroom, you've heard noises from the bathroom, and you fired four well aimed shots to kill whoever must be in there, without first finding out if it was the person spending the night in your house or not?

If this dude walks, then somehow, South African courts will be sending the message that it is okay for you to wake up in the middle of the night and shoot through the bathroom door if you hear someone taking a shower, as long as you can claim that you "thought" everyone was asleep in their bed at that time which means whoever was taking a shower in the bathroom must be an intruder.....you can simply say "ooops" and then walk free?

Foreign Affairs / Re: Oscar Pistorius Charged With Premeditated Murder by violent(m): 3:01pm On Feb 19, 2013
Even if it was an intruder, it would be cold premeditated murder to shoot them through a locked door. He was in no danger, there were people in the house. He should have called the police and waited with his gun in sight of the door.

Pistorius knew there was someone contained behind the locked bathroom door. He put his legs on, walked over to the door, and shot through it to kill the person inside.

This son of a maggot must be made to pay for putting the girl's parent through so much pain and mystery.
Foreign Affairs / Re: Oscar Pistorius Charged With Premeditated Murder by violent(m): 11:50am On Feb 19, 2013
So you got up from your bed, put on your prosthetic legs, load up your glock, walk to your bathroom and shoot whoever is in there, and then call it an accident?

What sort of stupid accident could that be? And how does he explain the girls crushed head and the bloodied circket bat found in his room? Were those part of an accident as well?

And why do people feel sad for him? A young lady's light was snuffed out because this dude probably has anger issues, and people feel sad for him? What has this world turned to?

This case has OJ simpson written all over it. Guilty as hell!!!

Are u not the same person that failed the system? .... There are many Ngo in USA , England that doesn't need to rely on government to help the victims of car accidents etc... What school did you attend? It will be nice to know. You are a disgrace and an embarrassment to whoever paid for your development.

So you want me to spend my earnings setting up and funding an NGO while Goodluck Jonathan ponders on how best to spend a billion naira of the nation's resources on food? Make Amadioha strike your left balls for making such asinine suggestions. How much will it cost me to start something like that in Nigeria? A fortune, you dog! a fortune!

It is not enough that i already paid my dues and contributed to the government's coffers via duties and taxes; It is not enough that despite paying those, i'd have to source my own power and water supply and budget an additional extra to settle off Police extortion; It is not enough that i should have to drill down my purse to afford a private medical care given that government hospitals are lacking the most basic infrastructures and its personnel poorly paid; you still want me to be responsible for using whatever disposable income I've got left in taking care of the government's most basic responsibilities? Make Amdioha strike your right balls for making such utterly disgraceful froth.

Nigeria is a failed state because it's leaders and paid laptop pigs like you made it so. Posterity will judge and curse you all for contributing to the downfall of the motherland.

Billyonaire: Many of you dont really know the meaning of failed state. I hate ignorance and foolishness, but I dont hate you.

Hahahaha, we don't know the meaning of a failed state? Is this Blind patriotism or just plain ignorance? Any country that fails in some of the most basic duties of a sovereign government is a failed state. In the case of Nigeria, could we get any more tangible evidence than that a man who bleeds all over himself and writhes in pain without a single hope of getting immediate medical care?

Nigeria first appeared on the list of failed state index in 2007 and has remained on that list ever since. We have mobs lynching people on our streets in the most inhumane sense known to mankind with impunity; We have more than 90 million living below poverty threshold in the one of the richest black nations on earth by natural resources; 150 million people living in darkness or are forced to source their own power supply; the roads are dangerous to travel by, so also is travelling by air; The healthcare system does not work, even the president's wife gets flown to Germany for hiccups; Educational institutions are cancerous, and evidence of that is a certain poster around here who goes by the handle Red-light; The Nigerian Justice system is a joke, the more you steal the more you are likely to avoid a jail sentence;

How else does one define a failed state?

I moved around the car and I knew what I was looking for, a scratch which happened on a day I used the car to brush something, I saw it!

Its not all about d feeding, accomodation and luxury expenses or having to work for dangote, 30k for 3 months. Dats too poor. I wish u r here to see wat is happening, then u will understand wat i am saying.

Did you read the terms of your contract before signing up? Did you agree to those terms? Has Dangote violated any of those terms?

I am sure as hell your contract must have stated how much you will be entitled to at the end of your training, if you didn't like the terms of your contract, why did you sign up anyway, only to then complain halfway through? It doesn't make any sense to me!
Dangote tells you how much he can afford to pay you at the end of your training, he includes other benefits such as feeding accomodation and expenses, these were stated clearly in your terms of contract, you read through this terms, signed and accepted his offer.....at the end, you then call him a scam for not paying more than you both initially agreed on? Who is the scam here?

I understand things are difficult, it's the same for most people both business owners and employees. Business owners have to ensure they manage their margins very well otherwise they'd find themselves closing shops in no time. Dangote employs over 15,000 people, if he pays each of them jaw dropping amounts without due consideration for his company's revenue and profits, he'd most likely be on Jobberman next week, looking for a job!

I don't honestly understand your fury, you weren't forced to sign up for this programs and neither are you forced to stay on. If you feel you've got skills that can command better pay elsewhere, why not just resign your position and leave the dude alone with his business?

You had a contract which probably states what your compensation must be, if the amount paid wasn't inline with the terms of your contract, then you may have earned the right to call Dangote a scam, otherwise, you can do the rest of us a favor and stop spreading filth all over the place.

The fact that the dude is rich and you work as his driver should not mean he's got to give you all his money. He worked hard for his money, you should work hard for yours too.

In addition, this program has only commenced to help reduce the amount of jobless graduates in the country. Before the commencement of this program, Dangote's company fared quite well without having to hire graduates for those position, so unless you can tell us how you are able to add more value than someone less educated than you, in this role, then i don't honestly understand why Dangote must simply hand over 200k to you simply because you've got a bachelors or whatever degree. would you pay your Barber 10k per haircut if he told you he's got a PHD in mathematics?

bukahands:

Ok thanks for ur opinion, my friend @ wharton studied computer science and diverted . Well all great plans starts from a dream. God bless

From my viewpoint, it appears to me you haven't actually had deep thoughts about your "dream"

1) You are not sure if you want to study BSc in Biochemistry or Petroleum Engineering, you just know you'd be studying either of those....why? You don't seem to know, just because both are choices in your line does not mean they will both lead to the same experience or take you to wall street.

2) You are not sure if you'd be studying in the US or Canada, you just appear to be one of us Nigerians who just want to travel out and study in the West. What are the working conditions in these countries? How many graduates from these countries are currently working in their own professional line? You don't seem to know!

3) You will work for four years, but where? in what capacity? Why four years and not NOW? How will that experience lead you to wall street? You don't seem to know!

4) You will work for an Investment Bank...as what? a shelf stacker? In what role? Front, back or middle office? or just as the office lackey who takes the office pets for a walk? Can you live with the demands of Investment Banking in the west? Have you considered if other commitments e.g having a family, will hamper this process? Can you cope with getting into the office at 6 am Monday and closing at 3 am Tuesday, whilst at the same time prepare for a meeting at 8 am? Can you cope with having a job where someone across the desk can simply scream "You are fired?" for not updating a spreadsheet as you should?

You don't just dream, when you are your age and making real life decisions, you should think each step through. You've got to consider all choices and possible options before committing time and money into a life changing path. Planning to study for an MSc in a field you don't know yet, in a country you don't know yet, with plans to work for 4 'gaddem' years in a company you are not sure exists, in a role you don't yet, and with hopes that Wharton or Chicago booth will accept you into their MBA program whilst at the same time grab qualifications which sometimes take the best of men many years to complete....all just to find yourself landing on wall street in a company you are not sure exist and in a role you don't know yet, in my books qualify for absolute ridiculousness.

Don't just walk blindly in other people's footsteps (in this case your friend), that itself is stooopid. You are not your friend and your friend is not you, think about your own life separately and realistically too. Don't just dream like a 7 year old. You are a gaddem fcking graduate.

But then again, what do i know? It's your world boss.

Violent, you make me laugh real hard..That 32K Pounds you computed, many 8th year analysts in Nigeria will kill to earn it..There are many 4th year analysts earning a total compensation of 2.5 Million per year. Many of them even believe that they are very well paid. When I came to Nigeria in July, I was privileged to be on the panel that interviewed some people looking to break into one of the boutiques in Nigeria. I was shocked when a guy, who has been working for 3 years for a slightly reputable investment firm in Ikoyi, was asked his total compensation and he responded saying 1.9 Million/year..hahaha. That is less than 10K Pounds per year.

Anyway, analysts should normally not expect to earn the standard investment analyst pay in Nigeria. If they did, they would be shocked!

T22

I think on a flip side, those amounts may be reasonable by Nigerian standards, mostly giving that the Equity desks of those firms are not not likely as profitable when compared using a Global Benchmark. The Nigerian stock exchange index is only about 200 or so stocks, composed mostly of Oil and Gas companies. For instance, A 2 billion Naira transaction will probably move the NSE in any direction you wish for it to move, whereas on the LSE or NASDAQ, the same amount will not even be noticed by anyone except you and your broker. In my view, i think there are only limited opportunities for firms to play in such an environment except those who are open to investing internationally. If the firms are not making an equivalence of Western profits then it may be unreasonable to expect them to pay their analysts using a western benchmark.

That asides, i think the substantial difference in the cost of living also compensates for living in the West. A year rent in a decent place in Lagos will probably set you back 800,000 naira. In London, a decent flat will set you back 1000 pounds a month.

Yeah, base pay is less; the figure includes bonuses, but the bonuses can be much higher, depending on how well the analyst performs in the year under review.

PE shops pay well in Nigeria, especially if one is poached from a BB abroad. Yes, ARM has a private equity group which is good to those who are lucky to be there. But the group is not known to recruit heavily, unlike the firm's securities management group.

I agree that the financial climate has been good towards equities. One should enjoy some mad, quick returns before things begin to head southwards.

Nigeria's equity market is really doing well at the moment, people are making millions by the day, capital gains are heading towards two digit figures week-on-week, even foreign based firms are increasingly increasing their positions in African equities, both for diversification and total expected return purposes..Imagine someone entering the market just 3 weeks ago with $20K and exiting with a return on invested capital of $9K, thereby growing his capital to $29K from $20K in less than 1 month.. And this occurred in the same Nigeria where people say there are no investment opportunities

You could have achieved similar returns by investing in this stock on the 30th of October last year and sold it in the first week of January this year. Or this stock. There are many more examples.

Bottom line is: Equity markets Globally have rallied a lot in the past 3 months and the rally continues. Money has continued to flow from fixed income/commodity like products into Equity and the FTSE in January hit its highest level in the last 5 years. What I am saying here is that these sorts of returns are not peculiar to Nigerian space alone, however, Nigerian equity markets are still fraught with a lot of problems including Liquidity risks and Political risks. If i were to be throwing my money into such an environment, i will probably demand more premium than what your pal has made, otherwise, what's the point?
Career / Re: Arm Investment Managers Pay Package. by violent(m): 10:35pm On Jan 20, 2013
Compensation is far from what is obtainable in NY. A third year equity analyst at a mid-level boutique in NY can comfortably bring home a yearly total pay of $80k and above. However, that same person can hardly command up to NGN8M ($54K)at ARM. No doubt, compensation at ARM is really good by naija standards, but definitely not what an equity analyst based in Manhattan would term stellar.

Hi Tanimola,

Does this 8million normally include Bonuses or just base pay? From what i have heard, i'm not sure where, Private Equity firms in Nigeria tend to pay much more than this figure and if I'm not mistaken, Arm Investment Managers do have a huge Private Equity group that compares with the likes of AFC, No?
