Science/Technology › Re: Are We Alone In The Universe? by vivaciousvivi(f): 11:33pm On Feb 01, 2016 |
wirinet: I was a strong believer of the universe teeming with life, but with more understanding of life, i have began to scale down my expectations. There is a possibility that we are alone in the universe.
The vastness of the universe makes the probability of life existing only on earth highly unlikely; but then we have to take the uniqueness of LIFE into consideration. First to understand how unique life is in the universe, you would need to understand the very definition of life. Life is simply a set of self duplicating molecules, either singularly or in combinations to form larger units. Now the conditions for a set of molecules to achieve self duplication is highly specific and rare. Let me list some of these conditions; - There must be presence of liquid water. Gaseous and solid water cannot support the processes of life. This restrict the surface temperature of a planet that can support life to between 0 to between100 degrees centegrade. - There must be abundant carbon as life can only be carbon based. Silicon cannot support life as it combination with other elements and compounds is limited. if silicon can support life, life on earth will be silicon based as silicon make up 28% of elements on earth. - The interior of a planet that support life must have a molten magnetic core to create a magnetic shield to protect the planet. without the magnetic shield, solar and cosmic radiation would not even allow life to form. Another important factor for life is the type of sum. The sun holding the planet must be the right size, ie a yellow dwarf. If the sun is too big, it would give out too powerful radiations and burn out too fast to allow life on any of its planets. If it is too small it would not provide enough energy to sustain life on its planets. it is only a yellow dwarf that can remain stable for billions of years to allow life to evolve.
- Eccentricity. Planets that can sustain life must have less eccentric orbits around it sun, highly eccentric orbits would cause to wide a temperature variation to allow life to evolve.
There are other specific conditions necessary for life.
Earth is uniquely poised to meet all these conditions and i suspect only few stars and planets that can meet the conditions necessary for life. Let me beg to differ. I agree life - as defined on earth is molecule or cell based. However that's the human definition. Again that restriction. Your comment on silicon again is restricted to the known elements on our periodic table again discovered and still being discovered by man. So what is there may be over a million elements that are currently existing / evolving across the planets? Again you talk about solar or cosmic radiation defined by man's understanding and belief of what doses are "normal" and not harmful. But what if a planet doesn't even have need a star that radiates solar energy. And then again, what if there are planets that have upto 3 suns far larger than that of earth's yet lifeforms can thrive. The number of what if's should not be ignored simply becsue man's science restricts our abilities to see a far bigger picture of possibilities! |
Science/Technology › Re: Are We Alone In The Universe? by vivaciousvivi(f): 11:18pm On Feb 01, 2016 |
johnydon22: You are even going too far ... what we humans define as basic necessities for life to thrive are not even what many life on planet EARTH yes here on EARTH use.
There are life forms on earth that thrive in places we regard extreme and impossible to harbour life maybe due to temperature, gases etc but we see life forms not only thriving but fully normal to the environment and probably will parish if subjected to our own environment.
So certainly if these life forms are asked to determine necessities for life to thrive it must be a reflection of what they are used to which for us is a NO NO NO..
Life is incredibly diverse that we cannot really pin point it.
I get you bro but what you have referred to is an otherwise closed environment. An environment within an environment. What I was commenting upon was strictly basing the whole existence of the possibility of life on an entire planet based on certain parameters - existence of water and hence oxygen in required doses, sunlight etc. |

After the theory of circumnavigation of the earth was proven, the so called Earth is flat theory fell....well flat (pun intended). To each his own, I always say. |
Science/Technology › Re: Are We Alone In The Universe? by vivaciousvivi(f): 10:58pm On Feb 01, 2016 |
mrphysics: just passing but let me add something.
when science talk about life somewhere else, they are not possibly looking for human being or complex animals or beings.
When we have water, plant and other basic forms of life, then science say there is life in that planet or place. because if water exist, plants can grow, micro organisms and other forms of life exists.
so lets stop thinking too far and weird. But then again, what we humans define as "basic necessities " for lifeforms to thrive upon may not be what another planet billions of lightyears away may define it. A dark planet for example (a planet without an illuminating star like the sun, may have complex lifeforms thriving who may have appendages, exoskeletons or whatever that requires the absence of light, or water for that matter. They may not even have a spoken language as we define it here, yet they can communicate. Limbs, but have their own ability to be mobile etc. What may seem "normal" here should not be viewed as "abnormal" elsewhere amply because we have restricted our levels of definitions. It may sound paradoxical as I am a Christian but I believe in the possibility of complex lifeforms currently existing in other planets not weighed down by man's definition of basic requirements for life. |

easrael: I know that we all love to use our phones everywhere we go and for some of us, we have found an excuse to take the device to church: e-Bible.
I use a TECNO L5 mobile smartphone and as much as I can be called an heavy user of my phone because it lasts long, I have ensured the phone doesn't go with me to church and here's the scriptural reason!
Habakkuk 2:20King James Version (KJV)
20 But the Lord is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.
The day I had a spiritual understanding of this verse was when I changed my mind about this act.
God wants silence in his presence thereby all agents or appearances of distraction must be kept at bay.
I pray that as we read this, the Holy Spirit would teach is more about it. Interesting you typed this. Just last week Sunday, this young guy -could have been anything btw the ages of 18 to 21 sat beside me in church. At some point, we needed to reference our bibles and he used his phone. Personally, I didn't c anything wrong in that. However at certain points during the service, the guy started playing some brick game on his phone. I just couldn't deal. He is lucky he didn't sit close to any of those Xtain mother types |

Well there you have it. His family have revealed the burial plans. I hope you travel to Bayelsa to confirm if he really is the one been buried. Make sure you enter the grave with Alams. The fact of the matter remains that even the so called traditional rulers are yet to sight his corpse. Unless an open casket lying in state is part of the funeral schedule, a lot of Nigerians (me inclusive) would still take the story with a pinch of salt. |
