Naming Nigeria - Flora Shaw and Sexism

Flora Shaw and Lord Lugard

By Robert Ojediran

It is an unfortunate consequence of our innate sexism as a people that when we hear the name Flora Shaw as the lady who named Nigeria, we see not a person - with a life, with achievements and with faults - rather we see the mistress/ wife to be of Lord Frederick Lugard. Ask any Nigerian and this is probably the only fact they know about Miss Shaw.

Our culture is one where a woman’s legacy is not a factor of her character or her achievements but simply by who her husband is. So when we think of the woman who named our country we cannot think beyond an ordinary mistress whispering ideas to her man in bed because that is her domain of control and of course it the man who carries out the act of the naming because only men can do important things. This could not be further from the truth.

Nigeria was named by Flora Shaw but not as a consequence her relationship with Lord Lugard as most people believe. She wrote an article in the London Times of January 8, 1897 suggesting that the territory around the Niger, which was then controlled by the Royal Niger Company, should be called Nigeria.

At the time she was the colonial editor of the London times in the 1890s. She had a column titled the colony, it appeared weekly. She wrote many articles about the acquisition of territories in Africa in the 1900’s and was considered as an expert on the issue. Her achievement in becoming the colonial editor of the London times was quite extraordinary. The paper was the leading voice at the time and widely regarded as one of the best.

Flora Shaw was unique in the way she wrote particularly about economic matters affecting the African Colonies. To be a serious female journalist in those times in a field dominated by male journalists meant she had to be really good at what she did. It was for these reasons that when proposed the name Nigeria people considered it seriously.

The Royal Niger Company was instrumental in bringing the British Protectorate to the area we now know as Nigeria. Flora by virtue of her job knew on a personal basis all the major players involved in the extending of the British Empire to this region and she came to think of herself as a critical player. Her credibility as writer and economic/political commentator was without question. There have been some suggestions that by virtue of her feminine charms she was able to develop relationships with empire builders like Lord Lugard and Dr Joseph Chamberlain that afforded her in-depth knowledge which she used to write her articles. Her letters would suggest that she was no leech though as she also advised them on a range of issues given her knowledge of the area.

Now this is not to say that Miss Shaw was perfect. Many of her ideologies as represented in her articles were imperialist, she was a firm crusader for the British Empire. She saw Africans as inferior, uncivilised beings compared to the British. She believed colonialism was a benevolent construct of the empire, spreading good wherever it went and incapable of evil. She also put forward as a trial name Goldiesia, named after the head of the Royal Niger Company, Goldie. In the manner which Rhodesia was named after Dr Cecil Rhodes.

The main reason I even decided to find out this much about Flora Shaw and rid myself of complicity in the accusations of the first paragraph is because I wondered, if she was just an irrelevant mistress then why didn’t our founding fathers attempt to change the name at our independence? The answer is they did. The name Nigeria Songhai was considered, a tribute to the famous ancient Songhai Empire in Western Sudan. The name Nigeria was practical for a myriad of reasons but in the end most agreed that the argument put forward by Flora Shaw was good enough to retain the name. The river Niger, the great river of Africa, with its over 20 tributaries and channels touched the lives of Nigerians one way or another thus we all feel connected by it.

”Return to classrooms”, Jonathan appeals to ASUU

on October 19, 2013 / in News 5:03 pm / Comments

Ado-Ekiti – President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday in Ado-Ekiti appealed to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to return to the classrooms in the interest of their students.

He made the appeal at the inauguration of the College of Engineering Complex at the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Ekiti State.

The three-storey college complex was also named after the President.

Jonathan urged ASUU members to heed his appeal saying that whatever their grievances might be, keeping students out of school for four months was unpatriotic.

“I once again appeal to the entire membership of ASUU to pause and ponder on the adverse effect of their action on the future of the vibrant youths of this great nation.

“The collective destiny of tens of thousands of tomorrow’s leaders should not be held hostage to vagaries of labour disputes.

“As long as we are humans, as long as we are a developing society, this labour dispute must come up.

“I always say that even in the developed societies we hear about labour dispute; and there is no society, even the most developed, that has provided the facilities for every worker. (NAN)

Local vehicles manufacturing – INNOSON/FG pact commendable

on October 19, 2013 / in Viewpoint 11:11 am / Comments

IT is an established fact that most industrialised countries like USA, Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, France, Russia and China have as their identity the brand of vehicles they manufacture.

For example America is synonymous with Ford, Britain with Rolls Royce, Germany is known with Mercedes, Sweden is Volvo and so on. It is therefore a thing of joy that Nigeria has started to develop a brand as we have in Innoson brand of locally manufactured vehicles. Obviously, this was how other great economies of the world developed.

Before Innoson vehicles were introduced into the Nigeria market, it was unthinkable that such dream will be realised someday in our country. Here was a man who started the importation of motorcycles from China but he soon realised that if he could bring them as completely knocked down parts, he will save some costs and provide jobs for our teeming youths.

He also thought it wise that by bringing the motorcycles to Nigeria as completely knocked down, it will be easier to discover the technological mechanics that enabled the Chinese to succeed.

This idea worked wonders as soon after he started assembling motorcycles locally he led the effort to crash the cost of motorcycles across Nigeria. Before then only two foreign companies dominated the motorcycle market in Nigeria.
There is no doubt that the abrupt drop in prices of motorcycles led to huge employment opportunities for our teeming youths. The simple reason was that it became affordable to the poorest families and they were able to eke out a living from it. Today, Innoson is replicating the same effort in vehicles manufacturing by doing what was previously unthinkable – manufacturing vehicles locally.

It is therefore gratifying that the Federal Government of Nigeria under President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has decided to partner with the company by patronising their products. This is indeed the way to go if Nigeria can make the desired progress in local auto manufacturing.

At a time when the country is facing tremendous

challenges in youth unemployment with its attendant drawbacks, only value-added enterprises like Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing plant can mitigate the effects through the job opportunities they offer our youths. Again this can only be made possible if they have ready markets for their products. It is worthy to note that the benefits inherent in supporting companies like Innoson to succeed are multi-dimensional. First, apart from the thousands of employees earning their livelihood, as well as their dependants, they would acquire necessary skills that can help them to be self-reliant and creative.
As it is well known, ideas drive a nation, and from the abundance of ideas generated from such an environment, the country’s industrial development will get a major boost. There is no doubt that Innoson Vehicles plant emerged at a period in Nigeria’s history when all odds seemed to be skewed against the setting up of such enterprise in the first place.
Talk of power challenges and other drawbacks militating against entrepreneurial endeavours, but notwithstanding, he was able to ride the storm and today Innoson has become a household name in auto manufacturing in Nigeria. The company is indeed a pride to Nigeria and Africa, and there is no doubt that sooner than later they will be the brand face of the African continent like Ford of America and Mercedes of Germany.

To save capital flight and create jobs locally, it is advisable that all states of the federation take a cue from the Federal Government by patronising Innoson vehicles. Already, some West African countries like Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Benin Republic, Niger, Liberia are ordering Innoson vehicles in huge quantities due to their durability and value added services. Gladly, the Federal Government has set the pace, and it behoves all tiers of government to take advantage of this creativity and promote our indigenous vehicle plants.

Chukwudi Enekwechi, a journalist and public affairs commentator, wrote from Abuja.

Mr.President of Federal Republic of Nigeria already has his position known as in the constitution so we must all get the Nigeria Constitution to know our own right and previledges as a citizen instead of being molested by some civil defence group or parastatal, ignorance is not an excuse in the law court so know your RIGHT.

Isnt the Automobile company a big deal for economic and employment growth too, every state governor has a blame of the unemployed youths , Imo state govt has virtually employed almost all their state unemployed youths, those has not got theirs will get it soon hence the state is working to ensure that employment is a priority.

A rep member suggested a motion that unemployed youths has to be paid a stipend but the same people turned it down instead they want the youths to go into career crime etc and later they would say,you are a bad egg to the society, most armed robbers, kidnappers etc are graduates who has no opportunity of getting job in the state or federal.

Go to work and stop politiking,NATIONAL CONFERENCE will strenghten the CHALLENGES we have as a NATION,a country where IBO will BLAME HAUSA,YORUBA will BLAME IBO etc viz a viz ,l this racias discrimination has to stop if we are to live as 1 GREAT NATION.Nigeria belong to ALL and no one or ethnic group has the VETO POWER,everyone ought to be equal with equity and fairness of justice.

Saudi Arabia rejects seat on UN Security Council

The United Nations Security Council votes on a resolution that will require Syria to give up its chemical weapon, at U.N. Headquarters. Saudi Arabia is rejecting its seat on the U.N. Security Council and says the 15-member body is incapable of resolving world conflicts. The move came just hours after the kingdom was elected as one of the Council's 10 nonpermanent members. In a statement carried on Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 by the official Saudi Press Agency, the Saudi Foreign Ministry says the Council has failed in its duties toward Syria.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Saudi Arabia on Friday rejected its freshly-acquired seat on the U.N. Security Council, saying the 15-member body is incapable of resolving world conflicts such as the Syrian civil war.

The move came just hours after the kingdom was elected as one of the Council's 10 nonpermanent members. In a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency, the Foreign Ministry said the Council has failed in its duties toward Syria.

This, the ministry said, enabled Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime to perpetrate the killings of its people, including with chemical weapons, without facing any punishment. The kingdom, which has backed the Syrian rebels in their struggle to topple Assad, has in the past criticized the international community for failing to halt the civil war in Syria, now in its third year. According to U.N. figures, the conflict has so far killed over 100,000 people.

The kingdom easily won the seat in a vote at the General Assembly in New York on Thursday, facing no opposition because there were no contested races for the first time in several years. The Security Council seats are highly coveted because they give countries a strong voice in matters dealing with international peace and security, in places like Syria, Iran and North Korea, as well as the U.N.'s far-flung peacekeeping operations.

The 15-member council includes five permanent members with veto power — the U.S., Russia, China, Britain and France — and 10 nonpermanent members elected for two-year terms. After the vote, Saudi Arabia's U.N. Ambassador Abdallah Al-Mouallimi said his country's election was "a reflection of a longstanding policy in support of moderation and in support of resolving disputes by peaceful means."

But the statement from Riyadh on Friday struck a dramatically different tone. "Allowing the ruling regime in Syria to kill its people and burn them with chemical weapons in front of the entire world and without any deterrent or punishment is clear proof and evidence of the U.N. Security Council's inability to perform its duties and shoulder its responsibilities," the Saudi Foreign Ministry said.

It also said the Council has not been able to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict over the past decades and has failed to transform the Middle East into a zone free of weapons of mass destruction.

Reps endorse tariff increase on imported cars:
OCTOBER 18, 2013 BY OKECHUKWU NNODIM 14 COMMENTS

Members during plenary at the floor of the Nigeria House of Representatives
The House of Representatives Committee on Industry has endorsed the new automotive policy of the Federal Government, which seeks to increase the tariff on imported cars.

This is coming as the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, said the potential for the automobile industry plan was to save as much as N550bn.

The Chairman, House Committee on Industry, Mr. Mohammed Onawo, said the implementation of the policy would attract new investments to the sector, protect local automotive manufacturers and create employment.

Onawo, in a statement made available to our correspondent on Thursday in Abuja by the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, said increasing the tariff on imported cars would encourage the businesses of local manufacturers.

“The House Committee on Industry is very insistent on the fact that anybody who is going to import a complete car is going to pay a higher tariff than somebody who is going to manufacture here because that is the only way that you will be able to protect who is going to create employment here,” he was quoted as saying.

Onawo, who was accompanied by 12 other members of the committee on an oversight visit to the ministry, said he was pleased to hear about the new measures.

He added, “Of particular interest to me is how to use tariff to protect local manufacturers. One of the major challenges facing those that are manufacturing cars in Nigeria is the tariff structure.

“If somebody who is importing a complete car is paying less than somebody who is manufacturing, then you are not encouraging the person who is manufacturing. With the new measures being put in place by the ministry, I am sure it will protect those investors who are willing to come to Nigeria and invest by assembling or manufacturing vehicles here.”

In his response, Aganga said the ministry would continue to partner stakeholders in the implementation of its Industrial Revolution Plan.

He stated that the new automotive policy would have a catalytic effect of fast-tracking industrialisation, creating jobs and generating wealth for the country.

The minister said, “The new measures to transform the automotive sector is part of our industrial revolution plan, which is integrated, holistic and based on areas where we have comparative and competitive advantages as a country.

“Likewise, the potential for Nigeria’s automobile industry plan is to save as much as N550bn ($3.5bn) through the reduction of imports. We also have the regional export potential into the West and Central African market, coupled with the availability of a large and trainable workforce.

“Recognising the strategic and catalytic effects of the automotive industry in industrialisation, job creation and wealth formation, among others, emerging economies like Brazil, China, Malaysia, India, Iran, Indonesia, Thailand and South Africa took deliberate steps to develop their automotive industry between the 1960s and the 1980s. Nigeria started about the same time in the 1970s. These countries have, however, developed well-advanced automotive industries now, in contrast to Nigeria.”

Jonathan orders NIMC to register all Nigerians by Dec, 2014

on October 18, 2013 / in News 12:30 am / Comments

By BEN AGANDE

ABUJA — President Goodluck Jonathan has issued ultimatum to the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, to register all Nigerians by the end of next year.

Launching the enrolment exercise for the issuance of the National Identification Number, NIN, yesterday, President Jonathan said the National Identification Number will go a long way in enhancing the work of security agencies in the country.

According to President Jonathan, “Nigeria cannot be an exception to the global trend towards Identity Management and Centralised National Identity Database, adding that there is already a growing quest for specific databases and identity verification by several government institutions and private sector organisations in our country.

“The growing identity verification needs, therefore calls for harmonization and integration of identity databases and development of a universal service infrastructure. To achieve this goal, the National Identity Management Commission should ensure that by December 31, 2014, all persons eligible for registration as provided for in Section 16 of the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, Act No. 23, of 2007 are enrolled into the National Identity Database.

“By this same date, all government agencies requiring identity verification and authentication services or involved in data capture activities must align their activities with a view to switching over to the NIMC infrastructure.”

The President said “If the work of law enforcement officers is to be enhanced; if consumer credit is to be accessible; if we are to reduce cost of managing the Naira cash component currently estimated at N192billion per annum; if we are to reduce the amount of currency in circulation; if we are to achieve a multiple pronged approach to fight against corruption; and if we are to introduce social security, then we must, first and foremost, establish and verify appropriately, the identities of individuals.”

The President added: “An ascendable and flexible system that provides for expansion and upgrading in line with technological advances, is a necessary infrastructure that we must be equipped with, to meet our contemporary goals in building our Nation.

“The Management of NIMC must now drive this important project with all the seriousness it deserves. We must move deftly to discount time lost so far, for failure is not an option. I am aware of the challenges facing the Commission, especially in recent times, not least from public cynicism and unfavourable perception of the identity sector, stemming from the wasted efforts of the past.

“If the slogan – ‘Enrol Once And Be Identified For Life’ is to be achieved, the process and progress must remain irreversible. I commend the Management and Staff of NIMC, for the articulation of this catch-phrase. I also commend you for clarifying the differences between the National Identification Number, NIN, and the National Identity Card, a multipurpose Card.”

“Even though both card and number are important components of the National Identity Management System, NIMS, it is important that there’s continued education about their varied applications.”

The President expressed optimism that the assets and experience of the exercise will boost the work of the National Population Commission, NPC, towards the proposed 2016 biometric census.

He said: “As we recalibrate our efforts, we must avoid the pitfalls of the past, and stay focused on achieving results. This explains why I had set up a committee chaired by the Vice President, to fashion the modalities required to institute a central demographic database. The committee has recommended that the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, and the National Population Commission, NPC, despite their separate obligations, work more closely, to complement each other and help deliver urgently a comprehensive centralized national database.”

He tasked the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Finance to ensure the objectives of the initiative aimed at streamlining biometrically-linked databases and optimizing scarce resources are accomplished on record time.

The Minister of Interior, Abba Moro while speaking said “there is a misconception in this country on the whole process of National Identity card management system vis-a- vis conduct of activities of some of the MDAs that you are talking about.

“The Nigerian Immigration Service, for instance, does biometric recording of travellers and people who come into and out of Nigeria and keeps the records and maintains the data base. The Federal Road Safety Commission certainly has registration exercise for drivers license, but the national identity management commission takes responsibility for the entirety of the registration of Nigerians and so there is no conflict in this situation.”

“From what Mr. President has said and what the identity management commission will do is to coordinate and manage the entirety of all identification arrangement in the county. It is just like the Galaxy Backbone, if you want to establish any digital arrangement certainly you must key in and align with the Galaxy Backbone.”

“And so today the president has given an instruction and order that all identity registration and management must align with the national identity management commission as a central management set up that will control all data regarding registration of individuals across the country, ”he said.

Car Talk › Re: How Does One Control A Car When Front Tyre Blows Out On High Speed? by VMLTDSMS(m): 12:33am On Oct 18, 2013
NIGERIANS are the most risk takers,White will condem a tyre and we see it as NEW to use which definitely endanger our lives...HOW MANY WHITEMAN car has BLOWN off his tyre on the speed lane, certain NONE because they usually go for CHECK and once nor¡t good, the system will reject it.

Ours, the Road Safety would won you of our bad tyre but we decide to manage it to risk our lives.Anyway courage is the key if such danger is encountered, dont stop suddenly and do not drag your steering, just be confident of yourself to control the car, dont off the engine otherwise the steering would lock which is more dangerous.

I think the best to do is to free the gear to neutral, maybe by holding the clutch pedal hence you are already on the speedlane, the speed will reduce hence you do not press the accelerator pedal and when the speed reduce, you can return the gear or remove your leg from the clutch pedal to draw back the speed to stop then you can slowly apply break.

BUT if you are using automatic system, return the gear to neutral until you control it with confidence,do not break otherwise tumble would be experienced

Politics › Re: Festus Odimegwu Resigns (Chairman Of National Population Commission) by VMLTDSMS(m): 11:56pm On Oct 17, 2013
gratiaeo:
However, the noise about the
2006 census results seemed to
have died down, until last week
when another controversy was
stirred from an unexpected
quarter. The chairman of the
National Population
Commission (NPC), Chief
Festus Odimegwu, was quoted
recently as saying that the
country has not had any
credible census since 1816 and
blamed the irregularity on the
distortion and falsification of
figures for selfish and political
reasons.
He said: “No census has been
credible in Nigeria since 1816.
Even the one conducted in
2006 is not credible. I have the
records and evidence produced
by scholars and professors of
repute. This is not my report. If
the current laws are not
amended, the planned 2016
census will not succeed.
“Population forgery was done in every state, every locality and every region because politicians want to manipulate it so that they can use it during the electioneering season,” he
reportedly said, noting that the
2006 census figures were
cooked up to favour the North.
He also made reference to
Tinubu who conducted his own
census in Lagos and got 17.2
million people instead of NPC’s
9 million.
Expectedly, Odimegwu’s
statements woke up a sleeping
dog as reactions from all over
the country greeted his
statement. First,
commissioners in NPC
disowned his statements and
warned him over what they
described as “unhealthy and
image-denting comments” that
are capable of causing a crisis
and forcing NPC to derail from
delivering on its mandate.
Also, Odimegwu was accused of levelling allegations of fraud,
corruption and marginalisation
against his predecessor and
some serving members of the
commission.

Nigeria is a failed country
HE SAID THE BITTER TRUTH,GOOGLE HAROLD SMITH TO FIND OUT IF NEED BE,OUR CENSUS NEED TO BE CONDUCTED DAILY INSTEAD OF 10 YEARS AND WE MUST EMULATE THE NIGERIA IMMIGRATION DATA BASE TO HAVE A GOOD COUNT OF THE FIGURE INSTEAD OF DOUBLE COUNT.
