Stop the rumour, it's a transformer not a bomb.

UPDATED

The FCT Administration has debunked rumours going round of a bomb explosion around Karu Satellite town, suburb of Abuja on Saturday night.A statement signed by Muhammad Hazat Sule, FCT deputy director/chief press secretary said the rumoured bomb explosion was “untrue.”
Sule said “the FCT Permanent Secretary, Engr. John Obinna Chukwu, FNSE, wishes to assure the residents of the Federal Capital Territory that the alleged rumour is unfounded.

According to the permanent secretary, “the FCT Police Commissioner, Wilson Inalegwu, in company of other security agents have combed all the nooks and cranies of the area from Orozo to Nyanya and from Karu up to Mararaba, in Nasarawa State without any sign of bomb explosion.
“Thus, the Permanent Secretary has urged the residents of the Territory to disregard such rumour, describing it as baseless.

Engr. Chukwu assured that the security agencies have intensified the surveillance the entire Federal Capital Territory in order to nip on the bud any of such unfortunate incidents.

He also called on residents to be security conscious, vigilant and report any suspicious person (s) or movement (s) to any nearby security agents.

PoliticsAlison-madueke: British Authorities Extend Dragnet To Persons Of Interest by vorigan(op): 9:07am On Oct 07, 2015
As the British authorities continue their investigation into the activities of the former Minister of Petroleum Resource Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, who was arrested in London and released on bail last Friday on allegations of bribery, corruption and money laundering, the law enforcement agencies in the UK have extended their dragnet to interrogating “persons of interest”.

The former minister was arrested by the British National Crime Agency (NCA) alongside four other people, but was granted bail after over five hours of questioning.

Even though the identities of the four other people arrested along with Mrs. Diezani-Alison were not disclosed, sources informed THISDAY that they were domestic staff and aides of the former minister.
NCA said investigations on the former minister were commenced in 2013 by the British authorities under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) and transferred to it earlier this year.

Sources in the UK’s financial crimes bursting units informed THISDAY yesterday that they had invited the persons of interest to assist them with their investigations in relation to the former minister’s time when she held sway over the Nigerian oil and gas sector.

Those who have been invited include a UK-based real estate agent; Chairman/CEO of Aiteo Oil and Gas, Mr. Benedict Peters; the husband of Mrs. Melanie Spencer, from whom £10,000 was confiscated last week when the NCA arrested the former minister; and one Mr. Kevin Okyere, a Ghanaian national.

Others exclusively reported by THISDAY yesterday were UK-based Nigerian who has informed the police that he would make himself available whenever necessary, Mr. Kola Aluko; a staff of the London office of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mr. Joe Mordi; the former minister’s London-based driver; another London-based driver/butler; and one of the co-founders of oil and gas trading firm Tridax Energy, Mr. Donald Chidi Amamgbo.

A source in the UK explained that though the “persons of interest” were not being charged with any crime, the authorities are inviting them to help them with their investigations.

The Ghanaian, Okyere, is the chief executive of Springfield Oil & Gas and also husband of a niece of the NPP 2016 flag bearer in the neighbouring country, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s wife.

Okyere, according to Ghanaian media reports, allegedly stashed monies in bank accounts in Ghana and overseas on behalf of the ex-Nigerian Minister of Petroleum.

In a related development, the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has described the ongoing trial of Mrs. Alison-Madueke as an appetizer to a main course of corruption trial that would soon follow.

Oshiomhole described the former minister's ordeal as a scratch in the surface and a tip of the iceberg considering her alleged financial malfeasances while she was in office as a former oil minister.

He also alleged that the former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration ran the nation economy on a deficit for four consecutive years when crude oil was selling at average of $108 per barrel.
He also said that the last administration wasted about N3.5 trillion borrowed from pension funds on recurrent expenditure within the same period.

Speaking at the Presidential Villa yesterday, he said: “The truth is that a lot of money was stolen and what you are seeing is just a tip of the iceberg.

“When you imagine what accrued to Nigeria consistently from $140 to an average of $108 (per barrel) over a long period of time and yet your treasury is empty and you were running a budget deficit; you were devoting 85 per cent of your budget for four consecutive years to recurrent spending, you were borrowing and you drew the entire pensions fund.

“There have been probes, there have been revelations where whistle blowers have been removed from office; they became guilty for speaking out. I believe time will tell, how much was taken and who was involved. I think what you are hearing now is like an appetiser. It is sickening; it used to come from America, now it’s Britain.”

Providing more details on withdrawals made from the pension funds, Oshiomhole alleged: “You challenge Pencom (National Pension Commission) and the Ministry of Finance, you will discover that over N3.5 trillion was drawn down by the previous government from pension funds to support recurrent expenditure, not to support infrastructure.”

He submitted that the previous administration’s purported success in rebasing the nation’s economy never benefited the people, as the masses remained in abject poverty and deprivation.

Asked whether he was happy with the ouster of Jonathan from government, Oshiomhole said: “I was the happiest person because I've been in government for seven years without being in power. I was in government, I couldn’t call a Commissioner of Police and talk as a chief security officer.

“I was haunted by all manners of persons. You kill the snake in Edo, they will put the snake on life support in Abuja and they keep harassing us.

“Now, all those venoms are dead and buried. For the first time I’m excited and happy not just for personal benefits, but for the changes I’m beginning to see. They've not started scrutinising, just blocking the holes, it's no longer flowing like before and so the propensity to indulge in those conspicuous habits are already curbing themselves.

“People are regaining sanity, human rationality is returning and the idle class that makes money without office or business address, whose only address is an iPad and cell phone with appropriate phone numbers, are all lamenting and not sure of tomorrow.”
Also speaking, the Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari called on Nigerians to support the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said the question of money laundry, which used to be an issue had become a thing of the past.
He said: “The practice whereby people put government money into their pockets has become history. As I watched Obama talking in Kenya that each and every $1 taken, if it is put into public use, it will be good. We should know that this country is our country.
“We have no other country where we will have the freedom to move around aside from Nigeria. So we are the people that are going to make it a better country.

“We travel abroad and see how they do their thing but when we come back, it becomes a problem to put it on the table and do the same.
“All of us need to put our hands on deck and make sure we support this government to fight corruption that leads to money laundering.”
He said the trial of the former petroleum minister in London should not be politicised but should be seen as a necessity to get things right.

PoliticsHow Benue Govt Paid N355m To Ghost Coy –BIPC MD by vorigan(op): 8:16am On Oct 06, 2015
Managing Director of Benue Investment and Property Company (BIPC), Mrs. Bridget Sheidu has been unable to convince the Justice Elizabeth Kpojime-led Commission of Inquiry on what the sum of N355 million paid to one Sankalos Benue Farms Limited account was used for.
At the commission’s sitting in Makurdi yesterday, Sheidu said the said money, N355million was 40 per cent share of a counterpart fund in which Sankalos was supposed to also contribute 60 per cent for the purchase of agriculture equipment from Mexico.
She explained further that the money was actually supposed to be paid in dollars into a foreign account but was instead paid to the company in naira, adding that the money was withdrawn once from the BIPC Zenith Bank account and paid into Sankalos account from where it was later withdrawn in bits within six days.
The BIPC boss, who was drilled for several hours by the Commission, disclosed further that Sankalos Benue Farms Limited was registered with BIPC as partners without her knowledge until 2014 when she accidentally stumbled on the document.
In her submission, the Commission’s Chairman, Justice Kpojime wondered why Sankalos, which was meant to provide 60 per cent of the total sum for the procurement of equipment would turn around and demand for Benue’s 40 per cent, which was supposed to be utilised locally.
A member of the Commission, Joe Abaagu insisted the N355million never left Nigeria, adding that the Sankalos Benue Farms limited was only a fictitious name used as a conduit pipe to siphon the fund.
The BIPC boss also tried to justify how the sum of N72 million was used to furnish one BIPC Guest House and Events Centre in North Bank, Makurdi through the account of one Joseph Tereser, a Principal Manager in the company.

PoliticsFormer Governor Suswam Goes To Court To Stop 'his' Probe by vorigan(op): 8:09am On Oct 06, 2015
Former governor of Benue State, Mr. Gabriel Suswam, yesterday filed a suit at a Makurdi High Court seeking to stop the probe panel constituted by his successor to look into the activities of his administration.
Governor Samuel Ortom in August this year set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the incomes and expenditure of the former administration.
The commission began sitting since last month with the collection of memoirs submitted by ministries, departments and agencies and invited various witnesses to testify before it.
Daily Trust learnt yesterday that the former governor through his counsel, Dave Iorhemba, had gone to court with a counter suit to challenge the state government on the probe panel.
Yesterday, the Managing Director of Benue Investment and Property Company (BIPC), Mrs. Bridget Sheidu, had a tough time with the Justice Elizabeth Kpojime led Commission of Inquiry.
Shiedu could not convince the panel on what N355 million paid to one Sankalos Benue Farms Limited was used for, even after several explanations.
She had told the panel that the money was the 40 percent share of a counterpart fund to which the company was supposed to contribute 60 percent for the purchase of agricultural equipment from Mexico. She added that the money which was actually supposed to be paid in dollars into a foreign account was later translated to the company in naira so that the total of N355 million was withdrawn once from BIPC’s bank account and paid into Sankalos account from where it was later withdrawn in bits within six days.
However, Justice Kpojime wondered why Sankalos which was meant to provide 60 percent of the total sum for the procurement of the equipment would turn around and demand for Benue’s 40 percent. A member of the commission, Barr. Joe Abaagu, contended that the money in question never left Nigeria, alleging that Sankalos Benue Farms limited was only a fictitious name used as a conduit pipe to siphon the fund.

Prince Haruna Momoh, the erstwhile Managing Director of the Pipeline Petroleum Marketing Company, PPMC, and major ally of embattled Diezani Alsion Madueke has just been sighted walking into the Charring Cross Police station in London, an indication he may be one of the five arrested on Friday.

Sam Piranty, a reporter with the BBC disclosed this much on his Twitter handle, adding that Prince Momoh has been under watch for some time and was placed on a visa ban by the American government.

Piranty further disclosed that many reporters had gathered at the Charring Cross police station this morning, awaiting the arrival of Diezani Alison-Madueke and others.

It would be recalled that Diezani Alison-Madueke, erstwhile Petroleum Resources Minister of Nigeria and four others were arrested on Friday by the UK National Crimes Agency in connection with bribery and money laundering allegations.

PoliticsJonathan Lied, 6.9bn Was Spent On 2010 Independence by vorigan(op): 9:58pm On Oct 04, 2015
Opposition built on lies is bound to collapse, the actual amount approved for the 2010 independence was 6.9bn, slashed from 16bn after the national assembly complained about the outrageous amount. The directive was contained in a letter sent to the national assembly in July 2010.

http://m.thenigerianvoice.com/news/29838/1/50th-anniversary-jonathan-caves-in-to-pressure-sla.html

Nairalanders can recall that there was an outcry in 2010 when a supplementary budget was sent to the national assembly with 10bn appearing for nigeria's 50th anniversary. The then information minister Dora Akunyili had to come out to defend it saying the anniversary budget was 62 million which was approved by Yar Adua, but that the budget didn't capture the jubilee celebration hence Jonathan approved the 10bn based on a so called recommendation from a committee set up by the late Yar Adua (a recommendation that wasn't approved by Yar Adua till his deat). Akunyili broke down the 10bn as follows;

N950 million was budgeted for anniversary parade including march past, fleet review and aerial displays, while another N350 million will be expended on national unity torch and tour.

The first Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan will spend N50 million for special visits to special homes, orphanages, prisons and selected hospitals, while N20 million will be used to sponsor a special session of the National Children Parliament. Another N20 million will used to organise a party for 1000 children.
The government will further spend N40 million to organise a presidential banquet, N50 million for calisthenics performance, N310 million for cultural, historical and military exhibitions while another N40 million will go for what the government called “food week.”

Other expenses of the 50th anniversary birthday bash include N320 million on secretariat equipment, accommodation, logistics and utilities while N30 million is budgeted for the designing and unveiling of the 50th anniversary logo. Similarly, the Ministry of Information and Communications will spend N1.2 billion for insertion of special reports on Nigeria in both local and international media, another N320 million will be spent on jingles, adverts, billboards, documentary and publicity, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will receive N105 million for an undisclosed expenditure.

To mark the 50th independence anniversary, the government has also budgeted N700 million to accommodate and transport special guests both from within and outside the country. Another N450 million will be used to finance the production of branded souvenirs and gift items for foreign heads of state and to erect a coat of arms on Aso Rock.
Also as part of the bash, a variety gala night and fireworks will gulp N210 million naira; an international friendly football match and local competition will gulp N200 million while event managers and producers will take home N120 million naira.

Designing and publication of a compendium on Nigeria will cost N400 million, while a similar one on the legislature will cost N150 million and a compendium on the judiciary will cost N50 million. Commissioning of the golden jubilee plaza will cost N10 million naira; while designing, construction and mounting of Tower of Unity in the 36 states of the Federation will gulp another N540 million. Debates, essays, conferences, lectures, and a colloquium will gulp yet another N150 million; musical concerts and carnivals in the 6 geo-political zones will cost N60 million; durbar, masquerades and cultural dances will consume N100 million and designing and construction of 10 symbolic monuments of founding fathers of Nigeria will swallow up N80 million naira.

A memory tone at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos will consume N40 million, security and protocol will cost N500 million naira while N25 million has been budgeted for medicals during the same anniversary.

Immediate past petroleum minister, Deizani Alison-Madueke, was on Friday arrested in London by the United Kingdom National Crime Agency.

Investigations revealed that the UK Police picked up Alison-Madueke on Friday in connection with offences bordering on fraud and bribery.

The Spokesman for the UK High Commission in Abuja, Joe Abuku, confirmed to our correspondent that five persons were arrested by the agency.

He, however, did not disclose their identities.

It was gathered that the Seizure Organised Crime Agency within the National Crimes Agency of the UK arrested Deziani and are probing the allegations against her.

It was further learnt that Diezani was picked up by operatives of the SOCA at the instance of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission which has been discretely probing her.

The PUNCH investigations revealed that the SOCA has a working agreement with the EFCC in the area of investigation of allegations of financial crimes and proceeds of such crimes.

A source said, “It is true that the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Deziani has been arrested by the UK’s National Crimes Agency, not the Metropolitan Police.

“There is an agency within the National Crimes Agency called the Seizures Organised Crimes Agency. She was actually arrested by operatives of SOCA because the agency has a working agreement with the EFCC. We have been cooperating with SOCA on a number issues.

“I can tell you that Diezani is being quizzed over allegations of bribery and fraud by the UK police.”

Investigations revealed that the EFCC dispatched a team of crack investigators to the residence of Alison-Madueke at Frederick Chiluba Avenue, Asokoro, moments after the commission was alerted that the investigation had commenced in the UK, where the ex-petroleum minister has been holed up since leaving office in May.

It was learnt that the EFCC operatives were still combing her residence as of the time of filing this report.

A family relation, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the arrest of Alison-Madueke to our correspondent on Friday.

Our correspondent could not get the Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, to comment on the issue as repeated calls to his mobile telephone line indicated that it was either switched off or in an area outside network coverage
