Now let tell you guys sumfin. Some months back, a friend bought an expired bottle of diet coke and I took it up on my blog and on NL.
Two weeks of visits and calls failed to get a response from either NAFDAC and NBC.

But one day of my post on NL and blog elicited comments from several bloggers and NL's.

The good news is this-the consumer manager of NBC eventually came to my blog, apologised and wanted more details. "he said call these numbers send me an email and the location of these expired drinks" now this is a case study of what to do with new media. put the pressure. Why this NBC come calling?

Because the search spiders tagged by post and Google was returning my post instead of cocacola's propaganda, So NL has potential i insist

@Seun. angry angry angry Why did you change the title of this post. Nevertheless i agree with some fella here who says that Nairaland was never really created for Nationalistic or social reasons rather for commercial reasons. be that as it may, the perception could be altered. who says NAIRALAND cannot become a political party in the future or throw its support behind a candidate. it's political value could be harnessed and estimated SEUN but then it's plenty of dogged hard work. Right now its tottering at the lower limits; plenty of raw stuff but in time it should all even out
Politics / Re: Useless Journalism In Nigeria (Name and Shame) by vwvw(m): 10:25am On Oct 30, 2009
angry angry @Sagamite. Now there are many things that do not ring right in Nigeria and one of them is; though the Niger-Delta is more than 90% responsible for the existence of Nigeria, it thrives and wallows in abject poverty. It is an overstated fact that many things have gone awry in Nigeria. However one thing that holds true; resonating globally is this. AS FOOLISH AS SAGAMITE. The protest in Abuja which you discarded is the worst editorial work I have seen in years and that’s because you rewrote it. You overstep the shambolic boundaries of your bland and mediocre world when you say the analysis should have been the impact of the protest. A fool you are, because the reporter clearly answered the point of analysis when he answered in summary. What was the reason for the rally? That story was a straight or copy story which means it had to be straight to the point; need I educate you that there are several news writing styles and forms and unfortunately QUACK EDITOR; you are lost in an unending pool of ignorance. Well in DIASPORA you dwell; the only problem here is that the only times I have heard that word was during the EXODUS 3500 years ago and the era of the African slavery, albeit this aptly explains your anachronistic primordial leaning. Now you father was wiser than you because he kept the old dailies and clippings for future references such as this and I am sure that if you ask him he’d provide you several dailies which provided the details of the former TSS agreement. Again when I call you a scallywag I am not far off the mark; because in the last two months the ASUU boss has on morning and prime news magazine TV programmes enlightened the public; and informed everyone that cared a hoot it’s demand. But then I am wary because I am reminded in coining a proverb not cast my pearls before a swine.
The paucity of Nigerian information is not new; if you had the benefit of graduating from a Nigerian university you would realize that most formidable clog in the wheel was this; most information available for analysis dated back to the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.  Idiota;  the national dailies are not the federal ministry of information and statistics. You cannot be in Jerusalem nincompoop, and expect to be a critique of the Nigerian press when by your admission are not more knowledgeable of salient Nigerian issues than a garage tout or street-side chef; your misfortune dumbass
This unfortunately is not fault of the media, but of a moronic conjecture of dim-witted cells which comprise your DNA, SHAGAMITE THE FOOLISH, E la la puta

well presenting the facts without fear or fervour every time would get you killed. I am not saying that there are neither errors nor shortcomings but to say an editor or reporter made a gaffe and you label him a slowpoke for his entire life is a silly assessment. My friend i have done stories and interviews afterward the interviewee walked up to me saying in clear terms, " don't use that track"  and he wasn't throwing kid gloves. when Nuhu Ribadu in a fit said the lawmakers are sleeping because they wanted to amend the EFFC act; i was there and Ribadu apologized saying "don't use that track i was angry." the following day all national dailies read, RIBADU SAYS LAWMAKERS ARE SLEEPING there have been several of such incidences, friend. but then everyone isn't as genial and cordial as Ribadu; ask Bayo ohu and Dele Giwa. several journalists have families and face huge risks while reporting, worse still they aren't paid well. AIT hasn't paid salaries in 5 months. yet the pressmen toil harder than several vocations,  i dare you to fault my claims. several of the industries practitioners were not trained in NUJ or mass communication departments, likewise thousands of yoruba and english graduates that work in banks. i am a trained urban and regional planner but i can assure you that the housing and environment industry is in shambles and in your estimation FIT NO DEY TRY LIKE THE POLICE and nearly every sphere of society wears a cloak of uncertainty. but then who are you to COMPLAIN, ask the policeman and fireman on the streets about their welfare and friend you will weep for this nation. So fellow, my summation is this, the GENTLEMEN OF NIGERIAN PRESS DEY TRY WELLA

I've been thinking and really thinking. First a recent report ranking NL among the top 200 forums globally and a subscriber base of nearly half a million users. what is the economic value of nairaland?

I was joking with a friend recently that overall viewpoints and popular decisions on this forum can be channelled to appropriate quarters.  I believe it can be done subtly and gradually incrementally ultimately moving this forum from arm-chair critiquing to a formidable and influential pressure group.

This is the age of the media evolution. this forum is well positioned to cause a desired change all it takes folks is BELIEF.

Fashion / Nicholas Anukanti Is Dead by vwvw(m): 12:58pm On Oct 29, 2009
Nigeria fashion show pioneer and style.com host Nicholas Anukanti is dead. Real sad loss, i knew the hardworking broadcaster way back with his campus show programme in the late 90's just b4 he delved into fashion and lifestyle. i remember he spawned a revolution of local fashion TV skits and programmes with Galaxy television; off course remember Miss galaxy. One thing i remember vividly is the impression he left on me following  a conversation i heard with him 3 years ago; he left me reeling on the walkway. his mind was a fecund Broadway of programme ideas. terribly sad he had to go this early

Now that is bad, if you have verifiable fact to that heinous crime it would be best to make it known. It is illogical for those media houses to exploit people in need! They have by their actions exposed their irrelevance! Please if you can get info on them i would be delighted
let me correct this; i have worked with a number of electronic media for some years now; this is absolutely untrue. these stories are HUMAN ANGLE stories and i have never had of any reporter asking an indigent respondent for funds before a story is aired. yes the electronic news media is still growing-how many private media outfit do we have in Lagos-10,11, compare that number with the rest of the world. In years to come, things will improve. the NBC's draconian laws will be relaxed and people like you will begin to generate news related content and in time the rough edges will be ironed out.No journalist worth his salt would be happy at the large chunk of hours given to music on Nigeria TV; but then generating serious and hardcore news related content is no child's play. but the above mentioned allegation friend, is untrue.
Politics / Re: Useless Journalism In Nigeria (Name and Shame) by vwvw(m): 12:01pm On Oct 29, 2009
shocked shocked @sagamite
Further more, I think the trash journalists don't usually meet the standard of their primary audience in a lot of cases. For example what is the point or how does it satisfy your audience by reporting on teachers striking over none implementation of the TSS without even detailing what the TSS entails in regards to package? What is the current package of teachers and what package are they fighting for at each grade? That is just useless journalism.

In regards to CNN, they can get away with it (although it is bad practice) because most of their audience (who must be a bit well off to be able to afford CNN) would be familiar with this popular institutions through movies and TV programmes they watch frequently. So they are satisfying their audience.

I doubt CNN would be reporting on an environment agency and not specifically outline its name.

u call this CNN style; standard reporting. balderdash, BBC is king of world news any day. By the way, worldwide mainstream newspapers and tabloid sales have dipped because most INTERNATIONAL consumers are fed-up with your defined WORLD CLASS JOURNALISM and hitch-hiked to online media like huffington post, etc. you're outside this country and expect to know the entire details of the TSS. my friend you don't expect to find the details in the online version of a local daily!! the information my brother is everywhere and we for NAIJA don't need movies to educate us. and finally PUNK, the freedom of information bill is what you should be concerned about; it would go a long way in curing your jaundiced paucity of day to day happenings in your country

Politics / Re: Useless Journalism In Nigeria (Name and Shame) by vwvw(m): 9:18am On Oct 29, 2009

I was referring to the national dailies where majority are poor and useless journalists. Most of the good ones are in solid publications like Newswatch etc or are freelance Columnists and these are the ones winning awards. Most of these awards I bet would be for bravery rather than intellectual contribution anyway.

What bloody time do you need to spend in a newsroom before you engage your brain to know it makes sense to identify a location to your audience rather than just state that it is "Owen Road".

well the PULLITZER prize, amigo is unadulterated genius and intellect. Azu of Punch is on CNN's INTELLECTUAL board which decides AFRICA'S PRINT JOURNALIST of the year and doubles as a fantastic columnist and editor. My brother if you've never been in the newsroom; you are no CHEF. You pick out three stories of out a million articles churned out weekly and monthly and say SOME NIGERIAN JOURNALISTS are morons. the question for a slowpoke will be is the story accurate? yes it is. he failed to mention where. but then that is a single omission when he is scored well in other aspects of the law of inquiry. And then someone has rightly pointed out; Bode George was not jailed for fraud or theft rather because he failed to adhere to a government ceiling of contract approvals, the judge said. "you cannot be more catholic than the pope". so my friend without being in the newsroom you have failed cardinal point 1 of fair journalism. GET YOUR INFORMATION RIGHT BEFORE BEFORE YOU BLAH BLAH. and finally neither your poll or title suggest that you aren't skewed anyway

i spoke to the president of the senate, 3 years ago and this is what he had to tell me, http://connectafrica./2009/10/19/who-killed-dele-giwa/. the long and short of it is this; the electorate can hardly get the politicians to do anything for them, the journalists my brus lacks the motivation and support from a cuban-styled public in ensuring social justice. the end result is this; more activists trade kid punches on the pages of blogs and new media. wise up naija

angry angry angry And u'd be honest. more than 90% of threads here take their base from mainstream media. so when you start your TV, radio and Print media. allow everyone the benefit of critiquing, otherwise be SILENT
