The Yorùbá religion comprises religious beliefs and practices of the Yoruba people of old before the Yoruba community encountered Islam, Christianity and other faiths. It originated from Africa (chiefly in Nigeria and Benin Republic), and in the New World, where it has influenced or given birth to several Afro-American religions such as Lucumí in Cuba and Umbanda and Candomblé in Brazil in addition to the transplantation of the homeland religions. Though specific numbers are unknown, it is possibly the largest African-born religion in the world. Though claims are made for an ultimately Egyptian/African origin to Judaism, Judaism was finalized as the religion of the Hebrew people of the Levant. Christianity and Islam also have long histories in Africa, but neither of those can claim to be African in origin in their present state like the undoubtedly African religion of the Yoruba. While much of Africa has increasingly adopted foreign religions, many indigenous faiths remain. The lack of proselytizing or establishing written "rule books" prevents these religions from spreading as much as Islam or Christianity. Regardless, they survive, both in Africa and the Western Hemisphere.

Yoruba religious beliefs are part of itan — the complex of songs, histories, stories and other cultural concepts which make up the Yorùbá religion and society.

[edit] Yorùbá, In Brief
It is in Yorùbá philosophy the indication that all humans have Ayanmo (manifest destiny) to become one in spirit with Olódùmarè (Olòrún, the divine creator and source of all energy). Each person in Ayé (the physical realm) uses thought or action energies to impact the community of all other living things including the Earth, and so to move towards destiny. As such, one's destiny is in one's hands. To attain transcendence and destiny in Òrún-Réré (spiritual realm of those who do good and beneficial things), one's Orí-Inu (spiritual consciousness in the physical realm) must be elevated to unify with one's Iponri (Orí Òrún). Those who stop improving are destined for Òrún-Apadi (spiritual realm of the forsaken). Life and death are cycles of habitation in physical body and spiritual realms while one's spirit evolves toward transcendence. This evolution is most advanced in Irùnmolẹ (oní irun, of the unique hair that distinguishes humans from beasts; imo, enlightened of destiny, ilẹ on the land)

For most people, iwapẹlẹ (well-balanced), meditation and sincere veneration sufficiently strengthen one's Orí-Inu. Being well-balanced, it is beleived, that you are in prime position to make positive use of the simplest form of connection between eniyan and Olu-Òrún in the form of adúra (petition;prayer) for divine support.

Some feel it also binding to make a petition or prayer to one's Orí Òrún as it is said to yield quick and descisive pockets of joy. Ẹlégbara (Eṣu, the divine messenger) who, without distortion or partiality for good or for bad, negotiates communication to Òrún and navigates them to Ayé; deliverer of àṣẹ. It is thought that Ifá is called upon whilst in times of major decision making; whatever the 'offering'; the line of advice is commonly used to draw conclusions that would not have been first thought. Call Orunmila,Ifa; or try vice-versa; it is said that all communication with Òrún is energized by invoking àṣẹ.

In the Yoruba Theogany, Olódùmarè has àṣẹ over all.

[edit] Deities and other entities
Yòrùbá Orishas, literally, owners of heads, are the means to get into contact with the supernatural. The term is often translated as deities[1].

[edit] Olódùmarè
Olódùmarè is the most important entity. Olódùmarè is so important, that there can be no gender assigned, for Olódùmarè is seen mostly as a spirit. Olódùmarèis therefore more correctly referred to as an IT. IT is the owner of all heads, for during human creation, Olodumare gave the emi, or breath of life to humans. To the Yorubas, Olódùmarè is Supreme. If there was a conflict among the other Orishas IT would take over and the fight would end.

[edit] Irunmole
The irunmole were spirits sent by Olodumare to complete various tasks, often between Orun (the invisible realm) and Aiye (the physical realm). Some were acknowledged as Orisha for their accomplishments. The orishas help to create and maintain order on earth. (see Orisha article)

"Everything wrote are okay but Orisa is different from Irunmole. Human beings can become Orisa if they performed extra ordinary tasks in the world before they are gone to heaven. Examples are Jesus, Mohammed, Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa etc. But Irunmole are numbered, they are not more than 401. The number cannot increase. They are the ones Olodumare (Supreme Being) gave the rights to care for the earth before the human beings came to the world. And they also thought us how to live life as we are living today. We are worshiping God through them. We are not worshipping Orisas, they are human beings like us. In Yoruba belief, human being cannot be worshiped but they can be honored. We are honoring Orisas and our Ancestors. The number of Orisas would continue to be increasing as the world is existing. There is no English word for Irunmole, better to leave it as Irunmole, the servants of Olodumare, God, the Supreme being. - by Prince (Babalawo)Adigun Olosun MA MA PGDJ PGCR. (www.yorubareligion.org)

[edit] Egun
The egun are ancestral spirits who made transition, but are still placated to assist and guide one throughout life. (see Egungun article)

Ahmadinejad re-election sparks Iran clashes
Opposition supporters protest in Tehran

Thousands of angry protesters have clashed with police after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner of Iran's presidential poll.

Secret police have been attacked, while riot police used batons and tear gas against backers of Mir Hossein Mousavi, who called the results a "charade".

Correspondents say the violence is the worst seen in Tehran in a decade.

In a televised address to the nation, Mr Ahmadinejad thanked voters for giving him a "great victory".

He said the people of Iran wanted justice, development and for their country's name to be respected.

The official results gave Mr Ahmadinejad 63% of the vote against just 34% for Mr Mousavi.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei praised the high turnout of 85%, described the count as a "real celebration" and called for calm.

John Simpson
Reporting from Tehran
A crowd of about 3,000 attacked the police, some of whom were on motorbikes, which they set on fire.

The sky was thick with black smoke. Police attacked the crowd with sticks and maybe teargas.

I didn't expect to see people turning on the secret police. We were filming when we were surrounded by angry secret policemen. The crowd turned on them and chased them off.

I suspect we are not looking at a revolution but there is serious anger.

It all depends on how the government responds - if they use violence, that could inflame the situation.

In quotes: Reaction to result

"Enemies may want to spoil the sweetness of this event,  with some kind of ill-intentioned provocations," the ayatollah said.

Mr Mousavi has also claimed victory, as his supporters said the election had been stolen and vowed to appeal for a re-run.

But observers say this would have little chance of success.

Some of the protesters in Tehran wore Mr Mousavi's campaign colour of green and chanted "Down with the dictator", news agencies report.

Four police motorbikes were set on fire near the interior ministry, where votes had been counted, the BBC's John Simpson in Tehran says.

Interior Minister Sadeq Mahsouli warned that any demonstrations needed official permission, and none had been given.

One opposition newspaper has been closed down and BBC websites also appear to have been blocked by the Iranian authorities.

Mr Mousavi was hoping to prevent Mr Ahmadinejad winning more than 50% of the vote, in order to force a run-off election.

Danger of 'tyranny'

Mr Mousavi, a former prime minister, dismissed the election result as deeply flawed.

"I personally strongly protest the many obvious violations and I'm warning I will not surrender to this dangerous charade," the Reuters news agency reported him as saying.

Mir Hossein Mousavi: 33.8%
Mohsen Rezai: 1.7%
Mehdi Karroubi 0.9%
Turnout: 85%

"The result of such performance by some officials will jeopardise the pillars of the Islamic Republic and will establish tyranny."

Mr Mousavi had said there was a shortage of ballot papers and alleged that millions of people had been denied the right to vote.

His election monitors were not allowed enough access to polling stations, he added.

The head of the Committee to Protect the People's Votes, a group set up by all three opposition candidates, said the group would not accept the result, alleging fraud.

They have asked Iran's Guardian Council - a powerful body controlled by conservative clerics - to cancel the results and re-run the elections. A second opposition candidate, Mehdi Karroubi, declared the results "illegitimate and unacceptable".

The BBC's Jon Leyne in Tehran says the result has been greeted with surprise and with deep scepticism by many Iranians.

The figures, if they are to be believed, show Mr Ahmadinejad winning strongly even in the heartland of Mr Mousavi.

The scale of Mr Ahmadinejad's win means that many people who voted for a reformist candidate in the previous presidential election four years ago have apparently switched their votes to Mr Ahmadinejad, he adds.

However, the president does enjoy the support of many of the urban poor and rural dwellers.

"I am happy that my candidate has won - he helps the poor and he catches the thieves," sandwich seller Kamra Mohammadi, 22, told the AFP news agency.

Mr Mousavi gains much of his support from the middle classes and the educated urban population.

Surge of interest

BBC Iranian affairs analyst Sadeq Saba says the result means that hope for peaceful reform in Iran may die for a long time.

There had been a surge of interest in Iran's presidential election, with unprecedented live television debates between the candidates and rallies attended by thousands.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's supporters have been celebrating the result
There were long queues at polling stations, with turnout reaching 85%.

Four candidates contested the election, with Mohsen Razai and Mehdi Karroubi only registering about 1% of the vote each.

Iran is ruled under a system known as Velayat-e Faqih, or "Rule by the Supreme Jurist", who is currently Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

It was adopted by an overwhelming majority in 1979 following the Islamic revolution which overthrew the autocratic Western-backed Shah.

But the constitution also stipulates that the people are the source of power and the country holds phased presidential and parliamentary elections every four years.

All candidates are vetted by the powerful conservative-controlled Guardian Council, which also has the power to veto legislation it deems inconsistent

Muslim belongs to the Arabs

Hindus for the Indians

Buddist is for Asians

and for Africa we were made to believe that our religion is inferior during colonization.

In Yoruba land, gods like Osun, Sango, Orunmila, Ogun etc are part of our tradition. Why can't we all be proud of our heritage?

PoliticsHurray! Court Void Immigration Condition For Issuing Passport To Married Women by walata44(op): 12:34pm On Jun 09, 2009
From Kelvin Ebiri, Port Harcourt

IT was victory for women as the current administrative policy of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) compelling a married Nigerian woman to produce a letter of consent from her husband as a condition for issuance of international passport has been declared unconstitutional by the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt.

The presiding Judge, Justice G.K. Olotu, made this declaration in a suit by Dr. Priye Iyalla-Amadi, wife of renowned author, Elechi Amadi, against the director general of the Nigeria Immigration Service (first defendant) (NIS), (second defendant) and the service itself.

Justice Olotu, in his judgment, said this requirement for processing of application for international passport as it concerns married women, is a violation of Section 42 (1)(a) of the 1999 Constitution and Article 18(3) of the West African Charter on the People's Human Rights, being discriminatory on grounds of sex, hence unlawful and unconstitutional.

Following the loss of her international passport, Dr. Iyalla-Amadi had applied to the NIS for the issuance of another passport and the officer who attended to her request gave a list of documents that she would attach to the her formal application, among them a letter of consent from her husband.

Irked by this condition, the plaintiff protested against it on the ground that a mature adult citizen of the country like her should not require the consent of any person before she could be issued a Nigerian passport, but her protest fell on deaf ears, thus the decision to file the suit against the NIS.

The defendants did not really dispute the facts adduced by the plaintiff in their counter-affidavit but sought to justify the requirement of a letter of consent from the husband of a married woman who wants to be issued a Nigerian passport on the basis that Nigerian married women are classified alongside with minors by the government as persons who require consent from the head of the family.

NIS argued that the requirement for consent was put in place to perpetuate the authority of the man over his wife, no matter the status she had attained in society. It also stated that the requirement was set to avoid unnecessary breakdown of marriage institution in the country.

Another argument advanced by the NIS was that obtaining a Nigerian passport from the Federal Government by a Nigerian is a privilege, hence any person applying must fulfil all the conditions laid down by the sole agent of the government, which is the NIS.

But counsel to the plaintiff urged the court to declare the requirement unlawful and unconstitutional on the ground that it discriminates between Nigerian citizens on grounds of sex, contrary to Section 42 of the constitution.

She added that the requirement offends the equality of citizens' principle enshrined in Section 17 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution.

Iyalla-Amadi's counsel argued that the condition for issuance of passport to married women violates internationally-accepted standards of non-discrimination against women, which to Nigeria is a signatory.

Justice Olotu explained that he had directed the plaintiff and the defendants to present the facts they wished to rely on for and against the plaintiff's action.

According to him, while the plaintiff complied with the order of the court, the defendants did not. He also stated that the defendants did not challenge the averments in the affidavits of the plaintiff.

He observed that the defendants seemed to have thrown in their towel after filing what he called their spurious and sociological dissertation in the name of counter-affidavit.

The judge observed from the wordings of the constitutional provisions in Sections 17 (1) (2) and 42 of the 1999 Constitution that all citizens of Nigeria are put on the same pedestal irrespective of sex and status.

Olotu declared that the policy is obnoxious, repugnant and unconstitutional, stating that the defence of the defendants merely showed that the policy was a cunning, surreptitious and high-powered calculated attempt to subjugate women as if they are still in the medieval times.

According to him, "this kind of policy has no place in the 21st Century Nigeria."

PoliticsVirgin To Sell Nigerian Airline by walata44(op): 6:41pm On Jun 08, 2009
Virgin to sell Nigerian airline

Virgin is pulling its brand name and selling its stake in Virgin Nigeria
Virgin Atlantic is to pull its brand name from Nigeria's national airline Virgin Nigeria and sell its stake in the company.

Virgin's sell-off is the final closure of an increasingly acrimonious deal, announced with great fanfare, five years ago.

An unnamed Virgin source told Reuters news agency the company would have until early July to rebrand itself.

Virgin Nigeria could not immediately be reached for comment.

"It is like the parent is now letting the child go off on its own," the Virgin source said.

In 2004 Virgin entered into a deal, brokered by then President Olusegun Obasanjo, to take over as the national flag-carrier from Nigerian Airways which had collapsed among accusations of corruption.

'Mafioso tactics'

Virgin Atlantic paid $25m for a 49% stake in the new airline, with Nigerian investors making up the rest.

Relations between Virgin and the government soured after President Obasanjo's successor, Umar Yar'Adua took over in 2007.

In 2008 Virgin Nigeria was stripped of a special deal allowing them to operate domestic flights from the international terminal at Lagos airport.

While stunned passengers looked on, hammer-wielding men demolished their lounge.

Virgin owner Richard Branson accused the government of using "mafioso tactics" and the government accused Virgin of "orchestrating negative propaganda".

In January, Virgin Nigeria announced they would be stopping flights on their loss-making Lagos-Johannesburg and Lagos-London routes.

After Virgin's withdrawal, the Nigerian airline is likely to merge with another local carrier, the Virgin source told Reuters.

Virgin Atlantic's flights into Lagos Airport are to continue.
PoliticsNo Plan To Reduce Seven-point Agenda, Says Presidency by walata44(op): 6:23pm On Jun 08, 2009
[color=#990000][/color]Now I believe that, Yaradua and his advisers are mental.

No plan to prune seven-point agenda, says Presidency
From Madu Onuorah, Abuja

WHETHER now or in the future, the Presidency says it has no intention to trim the seven-point agenda upon which the socio-economic pillars of the Umaru Musa Yar'Adua administration are built.

In its defence of the agenda and the need to go ahead with it, the Presidency said yesterday that the items in the economic blueprint are well articulated, interrelated and inter-independent with the capacity to revive the economy.

The Special Adviser to the President (Media and Publicity), Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi, who spoke on the position of the Federal Government on the matter, said since the agenda is not an ad-hoc measure, any attempt to prune it would amount to economic suicide.

The Presidency is also not deeming the comment of the new Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, that the agenda be reduced to two or three items as an attack on the government but a suggestion with the best of intention.

Adeniyi told journalists yesterday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, that the implementation of the seven-point agenda is very crucial to the survival of the Nigerian economy because Vision 20-2020 is anchored on it.

The government said Nigerians should see Sanusi's views during his screening by the Senate that the seven-point agenda be pruned to two as a "suggestion and not an attack on the government focal policy."

He insisted that there was no way the government would concentrate only on power and infrastructure without gas, "which is the Niger Delta element in the seven-point agenda, as the power sector requires adequate gas supply from the Niger Delta to function."

The presidential aide said without peace in the Niger Delta, gas could not be sourced.

Adeniyi said: "Fortunately, I watched the Senate proceedings of the confirmation of the CBN Governor, Mr. Lamido Sanusi. And I didn't see any area where he attacked President Yar'Adua's seven-point agenda as was imputed. All the items on the seven-point agenda are inter-related. But if you check the 2009 budget, those two areas highlighted account for more than 90 per cent of the spending. But even at that, paying more attention to power and infrastructure does not mean you have to neglect the Niger Delta because if you do that, the power agenda would be dead on arrival.

"One of the critical challenges facing government today is gas and pipeline vandalism. And the Niger Delta is crucial to this. You can also not ignore food security or even physical security. So, basically, the President and Mr. Sanusi are on the same page. I know that power is central to everything. And so does the President. That is why he is taking the Niger Delta situation very seriously because without tackling that problem, we will not have power, after we have made so much investment in turbines. With what is going on today, you cannot conclude that President Yar'Adua does not understand the importance of power and infrastructure. But my own interpretation of what Mr. Sanusi said on the need to pay more attention to two items on the seven-point agenda would be that he was only expressing the mind of the President with whom he had had extensive discussions in the last couple of weeks."

Adeniyi added that the need for critical infrastructure led to the recent award of contracts worth N140 billion for the rehabilitation and construction of several key roads across the country.

He said: "I am also aware that once the current negotiations with trailer owners, who have about 3,000 trailers along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway are concluded, hopefully within the next few weeks, the company which won the concession of the highway will begin work. And many other roads are also lined up for concessioning."

The presidential mouthpiece cited the ongoing reconstruction of the Airport Road in Abuja to where thousands of trees planted along the present four-lane highway are giving way to the originally planned 10 lanes illustrates the need for thorough planning.

He said the President would not allow such; he is a methodical person. "I think Nigerians will ultimately appreciate his approach. The President said at the time those trees were being planted many years ago and with probably billions of naira spent to nurture them, someone must have known that the road was designed for 10 lanes. Yet they erected Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) poles and planted trees very close to the four-lane road such that to extend the road now, you have to cut those beautiful trees and the power poles will have to be relocated. That episode alone tells a story about our nation."

Noting that in whatever the President does, there is much thought to it, "not only in terms of current challenges and prospects but also with regards to the future", Adeniyi said: "Take the story of railways, for instance. What government is doing now is to work on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with General Electric and African Development Bank (ADB) to ensure that by early 2011, we will have railway services across the nation."

Adeniyi said in addition to the dredging of River Niger, which has been in the offing since independence, will also be undertaken this year. The contractors, he said, have been mobilised to site and are only waiting for the water level to rise. The dredging will start next month with expectation that it will be completed before December.

Last Tuesday, the President held a meeting with the governors of the eight states along the over 500 kilometres River Niger channel, that is Niger, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Imo, Rivers and Bayelsa to explain the benefits of the project to these states, the entire nation and the West African sub-region.

All over the world, football is a big business I am still not convince about  the reason of hosting Super Eagle home matches in Abuja, because all you see are empty seats. Nigerian are passionate about their team, why not play this matches in Warri, Lagos, Kano or Calabar where the real football fans can support the team without being beg to come to the stadium? Are the people in charge of the football administration trying to satisfy the politician in Abuja by playing in an empty stadium?

It's absurd to watch on TV and see Madam re-branding and IG Okiro urging people to come and support the super Eagle. NFF, please return football back to the people of Nigeria instead of playing in an empty stadium.

We should wait and see what he has deliver.

In my own opinion the guy has been the President for 6 months or thereabout, he is nice, coolheaded gentleman and seems transparent.

However, apart from mentioning his 7 point agenda and 2020 vision he has yet to do anything substantial nor can I personally see his vision.

Until he set out his vision clearly and the time frame at which he is going to achieve them and finaly for us to see at least succesful completion of any of his programme I will say it will be too early for anybody to judge him on merits and therefore 2nd term should be off the table.

He needs to prove that his 'selection' or election is justified. 2nd term is to be looked at towards the end of the first term
