Some people accused Nigerians staying abroad of painting a bad image of Nigeria to foreigners? I think the opposite is the case. I defend Nigeria almost on a daily basis here, if you check the foreign media as what they paint Nigeria as, you will be sad. They paint a poverty ravaged nation, plagued with diseases and terrorism. Are the Nigerians abroad the cause of this? Anytime I got to the hospital for regular check up, the first question is " have you left the US within the last month" well you know why they ask....ebola!....Are Nigerians abroad the cause of this also? Not all Nigerians or Africans are enjoying life abroad, but many are very comfortable here but the sudden hatred is what I still try to envisage. |
I've been able to read a lot of comments on here, I started this thread to see if we can reach a solution to this issue, but many comments on here..... let me just stop right there. I've come to see that the mentality of Nigerians living abroad and that of Nigerians living in Nigeria are totally different. I have been privileged to experience both worlds. First of all I tend to disagree with respect that Nigerians abroad have contributed to the country's downfall due to migration, Chinese are everywhere, more than triple the number of Africans abroad yet their country is number 1 in the world. I come from a family in which everyone is fully educated and has a degree, not just any degree but professional degrees...I decided to leave Nigeria because I looked into the future and even though I believe in Nigeria that she will get better one day, I knew that the future for me and my career choice will be bleak for some years. I left and within 2 years of staying here, I schooled and now work with one of the best companies in the world, and someone calls this "slavery"? I tend to "dis-concur" sir. I won't go into details of how much I earn per month not to cause an uproar but just due to my one job, my family back home are all doing better. I'm the last child by the way, to show you how bad the situation is. My friends who lived abroad and went back home are complaining. They cannot even get jobs back home because the hatred is too much. When they apply for jobs, even the interviewers get "angry" and say things like "don't think because you studied abroad, you will get the job" and yet when this same set of people remove their study abroad from their CV, they say they aren't qualified. |
StealthyMe:Yeah...it suddenly becomes a sin to leave Naija. If you were in a relationship before you left and for some reason it did not work out, you suddenly become the bad person because you traveled out and one "oyinbo" girl has stolen you away. I have seen Africans here who would have been better back in their home countries. I wonder when we will stop having that mentality. |
I have been on some social media forums where there are a lot of Nigerians and the moment you tell them you stay abroad especially in the US, they suddenly attack you and call you a liar. Some will even request your number so that they can confirm, some will blatantly curse you out. Also when you try to contact some old friends and keep in touch, they either say you are posing for them and if you don't keep in touch that much, they will say you have changed. Why are Nigerians that way? |
Even if they offer the free sex till further notice or for ever...we won't still accept, that smelling thing we dem no dey wash? Ewwwww! |
imperiouxx:Oh ok...kinda sounded like a GC thing....it should be much of a big deal though. Although this might not be related but I know someone who converted from visiting visa to F1 and is still under way in the process as I type. The school did all for him. |
kobikwelu:I dis - concur sir....they also have other ways to verify your authenticity as a genuine student...don't get me wrong thou, I'm not saying one shouldn't write GRE...yes you can write it and it definitely helps your case but it's not an ultimate decider as to if you will be granted a visa or not....I never wrote GRE, I wrote only TOEFL and even the TOEFL wasn't asked during my interview. I got my visa and done with my degree here already. Confidence and thorough knowledge of your course of study and reason for study is key. God is the master key. |
E be like say na only Ladoke Akintola university dey get visa ooo....who is from Unilorin here? |
GraceyMeryl:Approval for green card?...I'm sorry if I'm being nosy. |
imperiouxx:Yeah that's true I wonder why we Nigerians always think we are smarter than everyone else and know all....lol...showing fake documents as if the Americans are idiots, if they are that foolish, why are they more advanced than us the smart ones... once you decide to use a fake document, you as well have shown that you have criminal intentions. |
imperiouxx:Lol that's is very harsh sir...lol |
Walspring:Lol make him "para" for them? Lol I no dey there with you oooo....hahahahaha |
ebdib:I understand though but you saying poverty makes it look like a state in Somalia (pardon me)....lol...yeah its one of the last states in the us in terms of economy, that's true. |
exxy:a brother isn't considered an immediate relative....spouses, children under 21 and parents are those considered immediate....like Zee said, look for another option if by 10 years you will already be growing white hair. |
ebdib:who told you Virginia is a poor state...lol...no state is really poor here, the only city I know of undergoing rehabilitation is Detroit in Michigan because it has been abandoned.... other than that...I don't think any other place has issues except weather or environmental issues. |
Gigibangs:if you can buttress your point by adding that you also did your research on the school and state specifics about why you chose the school in connection to the representatives coming to nigeria it could be a strong point. |
exxy:Yes he can file for you under family but you will be on the waiting list for at least 10 years....this is because you are not an immediate family member of your sponsor who in this case is your uncle. Your age now plus 10 years is when it's likely to reach your turn. |
osahons9:I agree with oshasons.....be more articulate in your explanations and buttress your points using some technical terms |
Glocal1:I actually applied but it was all given out before I resumed so I had to wait for it...but yeah I'm through now and trying to make some small money lol. My transcript is also here but it should be in part 2 or so |
Glocal1:oh yeah sure financial aid is the best and do anything to get it. You sure do have hope just ensure you perform excellently. I got an aid but that was during my final semester....lol...after I don cough put for their pocket plenty money.... |
Jchi9876:in fact you just hit the nail on the head...abeg come with your school fees oooo...don't think you will get automatic job upon arrival...you won't be picking dollars on the streets of us when you arrive because you will sweat for every cent you make here so be prepared. It is the land of opportunities but you have to be ready to work hard for those opportunities. Don't expect to get any loans as Jchi has said....avoid it if possible. I never took any loans I survived on $30 a month for food ..if you want to know how to just ask me...although now I can eat all the ribs and full slabs I want but I had to go through the process the hard way. Bring you school fees, abeg, bring your school fees, don't think one American will pity you and pay your fees. Na OYO oooo |
Jchi9876:Yeah credit card can be tricky, I just make sure I don't spend more that what I can pay back....but at times nah, you just want to pay the little extra. Lol, where do you stay? |
Jchi9876:That's how this place be ooo. The best time is when an international student no much taxes but now I will be paying a lot...it's like I work for nothing lol...thank God for credit card. |
Jchi9876:You must be a citizen now ooo |
coobboy:Even the Chinese sef....lol |
michaelweezy:Congrats bro...share your experience so we too can learn. |
How is everyone...I am in again...always in and out lol |
Any visa interview experience? |
Amefrica: They gv students the option of carrying their own insurance or the 1 the school is offering..Ok good...I would advice you call the school and ask what external insurance they accept so that you'll know which way to go |
Amefrica: Hi house.. Please, how much can i purchase a health insurance here in nigeria.. My school's is too exhorbitant.? How can i go abt it ? I aint entitled to NHIS..Purchasing your health insurance in school is the best 'cos depending on your school, they may not accept any health insurance from Nigeria, you would not want to be in a position where you would have purchased an health insurance in Naija and it;s rejected during your registration... |
imperiouxx: @Ame,Guy how far, I wan return to my group oo after a long while...I hope i'm accepted? |
flynbird: My school resumes september. I just want to have time to settle do before resumptionnah....as long as you're traveling on a valid student visa, you do not need a transit visa....I think it's also covered in you plane ticket.... |

could that be a red flag
