Despite Nigeria’s rising debts and dismal economy, the Senate has approved $1.5 billion and €995 million external loan requests by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The senators approved the loans on Wednesday.

In May 2020, Mr Buhari had sent a letter to the Senate seeking its approval for another batch of external loans to enable his regime to finance the 2020 budget deficit, critical projects, and support some of the state governments.

Mr Buhari explained that he would use the loans used to execute priority projects and support state governments in stimulating their economy adversely hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The loan is in the immediate best interest of the Nigerian state and its citizens in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic in a way that the economy will be positioned for quick recovery and resume growth.

The country’s debt status has continued to rise following the president’s decision to keep servicing the country’s ballooning budget with loans from foreign countries.

In December 2020, the country’s debt status rose to N92.915 from N100.222 trillion in September.

Governor Nyesom Wike has opened up on his take concerning the call for Pantami to be sacked -

Wike on Tuesday, April 20, said the best decision for the minister at this time is to resign honourably -
The governor added that Pantami's remarks in the past have brought about a lot of serious insecurity issues and killings.

Speaking in an interview with AIT TV monitored by Legit.ng on Tuesday, April 20, Governor Wike alleged that whatever it was that Pantami said or did in the past has germinated into serious problems in the country.
Governor Wike said the minister should resign now

"Whether as a teenager or not, the seed he sowed that time, what has happened now? It has germinated into people killing people. "So it's not a question of whether you're a teenager...it is not excusable...it is not excusable at all
"That argument of being a teenager is neither here nor there..." The governor blamed what he called power-play in the screening of ministers by the National Assembly on the appointment of some public servants with questionable histories

Wike noted that in other societies, Pantami should not have been appointed into his present office, adding that the minister should resign in his best interest.

The crime of the Nigerian state is allowing Pantami to rise to the level he has risen in Nigerian state affairs.

Pantami’s religious views are not different from that of Sheikh Gumi, the man who has turned himself into the religious avatar whose chosen path is that of going inside the forest to mediate and negotiate between bandits and the Nigerian state.

Gumi too has sought to canonize bandits and even insurgents by saying that Nigeria misunderstood them. He is free to trade such irresponsible views too. The problem will arise the day Gumi seeks to handle one of the instruments of administration of a secular Nigerian state

That is why Pantami should not be blamed.

The blame should fall squarely by the feet of President Muhammadu Buhari, his appointor, and the Nigerian state whose feeble binoculars could not pinpoint and pin those damaging and dangerous views ascribed to the Minister.

Why I do not blame Buhari himself but the Nigerian electors who, in spite of them, voted him into office as president, is that, there seems not to be too much difference between the views held by Pantami and even Buhari himself before the latter became president.

We were not too young to read and watch on television Buhari fuming and saying that if he was rigged out of the presidential election, the dogs and the baboons would be soaked in blood. That was an insurgent philosophy. This same man upbraided the Goodluck Jonathan government for attacking Boko Haram insurgents and said that every shelling of the insurgents was an attack against the north.

The truth is that, many northern elders unfortunately share huge slices of opinions that are similar to Pantami and Buharis’. It is why insurgency is festering in the land like ferns in a plantation. In a saner clime, Pantami would have resigned if he still retains any modicum of honour left in him. But, this is Nigeria; he won’t resign. Has President Buhari himself resigned??

there has been no record of any attempt made on him which may be raising the question of taqwa.

With him as communication minister how come not a single call of Boko haram has been successfully monitored and traced.

Funding and transfer of money are under the purview of his ministry has he tracked any fund transfer to Boko Haram? Information leading to most of the ambushes laid against the military must have been done through our communication network. How come not a single one has been intercepted.

We will never win the war against terrorism as long has he remain as minister of Communications.
