Grit2943: The new governor of Kano state, Abba Yusuf, has okayed the appointment of an Islamic cleric, Isma’il Mangu, who was arrested by Nigeria’s secret police, the State Security Services (SSS), for inciting violence ahead of the 18 March governorship election in the state.
Mr Mangu was appointed a member of the Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board.
Other appointees to the board are Yusuf Lawan as the chairman and Laminu Rabiu as the board’s Executive Secretary.
Others are Abbas Daneji, a member; Shehi Maihula, a member; Munir Lawan member; Aishatu Matawalle member; and Sani Ashir, also a member.
“The appointees are expected to take over the affairs of the board immediately to ensure successful 2023 Hajj operation, a statement by Sanusi Bature, the spokesperson of the governor said.
The spokesperson for the SSS, Peter Afunanya, in March, said Mr Mangu deliberately incited violence in parts of the state through separately recorded messages.
The SSS said he shared the messages on various social media channels.
PREMIUM TIMES obtained a copy of a sermon the Islamic cleric delivered on 10 March during a Friday congregational prayers in the Wudil local government area of the state. In the recording, he called for residents to besiege the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC and die if their candidate was not declared a winner.

Investogist: The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared nationwide strike from next Wednesday amid fuel crisis in the country following the abrupt removal of the controversial subsidy by the Federal Government.
Itrybe: The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has kicked against what it described as the deceptive move of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government.
The spokesperson of the group, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, in a statement issued Thursday, said it observed that on every occasion, the NLC would deceive the public into believing they are protecting their interests, only to betray the course and negotiate with the government at the expense of the suffering masses.
It said the first instance was the NLC protests over the harsh economic policies of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s government in February 2017 which came to an abrupt end without achieving any results and no convincing explanation to the public.
It said, “Then came the September 2018 strike, which was also terminated after the NLC met with government officials and compromised the effort with no effect.
“The worst scenario was the October 2020 organised labour plan to shut down the entire economy in protest over the increase in the pump price of petrol and a hike in electricity tariff.”
The group noted the strike was called off at the last minute after a meeting between government officials and labour leaders in Abuja.
The group stressed that it took exception to the move by labour at that time, describing it as a huge trade-off and compromise in its strongly worded letter of October 6, 2021, to the former President of NLC, Ayuba Wabba, expressing disappointment in the labour leadership, for deliberately suspending an action meant to check the arbitrary hike in fuel prices by the Buhari administration.
“Now that NLC wants to take the nation for granted once more, we demand that it should first of all explain its whereabouts at the time the budget was prepared, presented, defended by the government of the former president Muhammadu Buhari and passed by the 9th National Assembly without the provision for subsidy,” it said.
According to Abdul Azeez,”We call on the new administration of President Bola Tinubu to handle this obviously dicey situation with utmost wisdom and compassion so that the innocent public is not made victim.
“We call the attention of the Tinubu administration to be vigilant over the latent trap set for it with the subsidy issue by the outgone government aiming to set it on a collision course with the public early in the day.
“We therefore advise government to deploy maximum wisdom, and caution to chart a workable means of dealing with the bad situation deliberately thrown on its laps in such a way that no one gets
gmo10: President Bola Tinubu is currently meeting with certain prominent political figures at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that among the attendees are Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State, James Ibori, the former governor of Delta State, and Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State.
Former Governors Wike, Ibori, and Makinde arrived at the State House around 4:20 pm.
Wike and Makinde are members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). They are part of a group known as the G-5, which opposed their party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, during the February 25 elections. Meanwhile, Wike recently completed his eight-year term as governor.
Ibori and President Tinubu have previously served as governors from 1999 to 2007.
It is worth noting that Ibori reportedly supported the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last general elections, as his preferred candidate for the PDP governorship election lost to former governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s candidate.
Rumours have been circulating suggesting that Ibori might defect to the APC soon after losing influence within the PDP in Delta State.
Similarly, Wike has been involved in a contentious relationship with the PDP leadership and has been rumoured to be considering leaving the party altogether.
The governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has declared an end to sit-at-home in the state effective from Monday, June 6, 2023, saying such orders were restricting creativity, entrepreneurship, and productivity in the state.
He, however, expressed government’s readiness “to engage in dialogue with people, who have genuine grievances towards bringing lasting peace and security to Enugu State”.
This was even as he called on President Bola Tinubu to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to quicken the much-needed healing process in Nigeria.
Mbah made the declaration while listing out the decisions reached at the end of his first security council meeting with the heads of all the security agencies at the Government House, Enugu, on Thursday.
At the meeting, which also had the Deputy Governor, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, in attendance, the governor reminded the people of Enugu that he had hit the ground running on the day of his inauguration by signing three Executive Orders for the good governance of the state, including Executive Order 002 for the removal of “Unauthorised Street Barriers Across the State Within 100 Days”.
“There is no time to waste. The clock has started ticking on the mandate you gave me and deliverables I promised,” he reiterated.
“A time comes in the lives of a people when they must decide whether they genuinely want to move forward or remain stuck with the conditions of their underdevelopment.
“The creativity and sense of industry of Ndi Igbo are remarkable. Our DNA is wired with commercial and entrepreneurial prowess.
“If this is what we are known by, then it becomes inconsistent with reality that the spirit of entrepreneurship, commerce and creativity are killed every Monday in our land. Our restless spirit of industry abhors laxity and indolence.
“The idea behind sitting at home on Monday, the first working and business day of the week, is abominable and antithetical to greatness and the spirit of industry we profess to have inherited from our forebears. This cannot be us. Tufiakwa (God forbid). It does colossal damage to us”, he further added.
Mbah reminded the people of the direct connection between his lofty promises he made to them and the vibrancy of commerce in the state.
“For us to transit from a public service economy to a private sector-driven one, we must free our markets from the shackles of restriction to commerce. If indeed we aspire and anticipate an influx of private sector practitioners and investors in Enugu State, we must know that this will not happen where the perception of us is that of unproductive people.
“Therefore, those that strike on Mondays, putting restrictions in the way of our Igbo spirit of creativity, cannot be our true representatives. In fact, they kill our spirit.
“We know that our land is a fertile ground for commerce. However, businesses, entrepreneurship and commerce require a vibrant workforce and big markets where they can flourish and make money.
“To this end, therefore, from Monday June 6, 2023, there will be no observance of any sit-at-home in all nooks and crannies of Enugu State.
“Government will enforce this with all the powers at its disposal.
“My charge to all of you – market men and women, the corporate world, industries, schools, civil servants, and all strata of workers in Enugu State is for us to take back our sense of industry, pride of place and re-enact our glorious past.
“By heeding this call, you would have set us on the path of actualising our mandate”, he stated.
Mbah, however, said the release of Kanu was important to the healing of the country.
“I call on our newly sworn in president, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to consciously work towards the release of MazI Nnamdi Kanu. We believe that his release will expedite the healing process Nigeria needs at this time.
“It will also be a pointer to his administration’s extension of brotherly hands of fellowship to Ndigbo”, he concluded.
