A mother and daughter are in custody for the alleged murder of a 71-year-old grandmother whose decomposing remains were sniffed out by police after she had been dismembered with a chainsaw and burned on a charcoal grill.
Candace Craig, 44, is accused of killing her mother Margaret Craig and enlisting in the help of her 19-year-old daughter Salia Hardy to dispose of the body, according to Prince George's County police.
Officers on Friday conducted a welfare check on the matriarch at the Landover, Maryland, and immediately smelled the odor of decomposition.
They discovered 'what appeared to be brain matter' in open trash bags, according to gruesome details revealed in court documents obtained by WJLA on Monday.
Both Candace and Salia are in the custody of the Prince George's County Department of Corrections and face charges in Margaret Craig's death.
Police claim Candace allegedly murdered her mother on May 23, following an altercation and then had her daughter help to dispose of the remains, which had were reportedly being kept in a blue bin in her bedroom.
While police are still working on identifying a motive, according to the press release.
Court documents allege that Margaret had threatened to report her daughter Candace to the police for fraudulent use of her credit card.
'Defendant 2 [Salia Hardy] stated that the Defedent threatened to report her daughter, Defendant 1 [Candace Craig], to the police for fraudulent use of her credit card.' Defendant 1 then attacked the Decedent,' the court documents stated.
The alleged attack happened just nine days after Mother's Day this year. In 2021, Candace had posted a heartfelt message to her mom on her Facebook page.
'Happy Mother's Day to the number one woman in my life. I hope you have an awesome and peaceful day. I don't get to say this everyday but I love you very much to the moon and back,' she wrote.
Police responded to the family home in the 200 block of Hill Road about 1:35 p.m. on Friday after an unidentified 911 caller said they had not heard from Margaret Craig and were worried about her welfare.
Candace Craig answered the door and allowed officers inside to search the home.
When police entered the basement, they 'recognized the smell of putrefaction and observed blood and tissue on the floor near three white plastic trash bags.'
The documents also revealed that police found a knife on the basement floor, and recovered a chainsaw, cutting utensils, cleaning materials scattered nearby, and found blood spatter throughout the basement.
'The detectives of the Homicide Unit will ensure a thorough investigation is conducted and that both suspects are held accountable for their cruel and criminal behavior,' Major David Blazer, commander of the major crimes division in Prince George's County, said in a statement.
Candace Craig is charged with first and second degree murder. Her daughter Salia Hardy is charged with accessory after the fact.
A preliminary hearing for Candace is scheduled for July 3. She is being held without bond.
jameshankss: An undergraduate of the University of Lagos, identified simply as Adekunle, was on Saturday shot dead by armed robbers at Harvey Road, Moore Road Junction, in the Yaba area of the state.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Adekunle and his school mate identified simply as Opeyemi boarded a shuttle bus from Yaba to UNILAG and while in the vehicle, a man, who was hanging at the back of the bus, dispossessed Opeyemi of her iPhone 7 plus.
Pained by the development, Opeyemi raised the alarm and Adekunle, in a desperate attempt to retrieve the phone from the robber who jumped down from the bus and fled, pursued him.
Realising that Adekunle was closing in on the suspect, it was learnt that one of the hoodlums suspected to be working with the fleeing suspect appeared from nowhere and shot the 23-year-old.
Speaking with our correspondent on Monday, an eyewitness who does not want his name mentioned for security reasons, said the robber’s accomplice shot Adekunle in the head, adding that the undergraduate died on the spot.
He said, “The incident happened on June 3 around 9pm. What happened was that someone shot the deceased at a close range on the left side of his head and he died on the spot. An ATM card found on him bears the name Adekunle.
“Later on, we gathered from a girl that gave her name as Opeyemi, who claimed to be a student of Business Administration, UNILAG, that she and the deceased, whom she knew as a student of UNILAG, boarded a shuttle bus from Yaba and were heading to UNILAG when she got dispossessed of her iPhone 7 Plus by a thief hanging at the back of the bus.
“She said the deceased attempted to help by pursuing the robber but in the process, another group of persons came out and one of them shot him at a close range on the left side of his head and he died on the spot.”
In a picture in possession of our correspondent, Adekunle, who wore a black top and trousers, was seen lying motionless on the floor of the crime scene.
Our correspondent gathered that policemen, who arrived at the scene later, evacuated Adekunle’s corpse and deposited it at the morgue of the Mainland Hospital.
Contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the command had commenced an investigation to track down the suspects behind the attack.
“The deceased was a UNILAG student. The suspects are being trailed for possible arrest and the command has contacted the victim’s relatives. The case has been transferred to the SCID, Panti, for discreet investigation,” he said.
When contacted, the spokesperson for UNILAG, Adejoke Alaga-Ibrahim, declined to comment on the development.
“I do not give reactions over the phone; I will like you to make a formal request; you could send an email to the communicationunit@unilag.edu.ng, or you could come over to the university so that you can speak with the Dean of Students Affairs,” she said.
