Women, mainly in the United States, are lately announcing that they will eat placenta as part of their childbirth experience. They expect to experience major health benefits like prevented or reduced postpartum depression. A couple of celebrities mentioned it and that brought placentophagia into the spotlight. What’s going on? “Placentophagia” pertains to ingestion of placenta, fluids, and tissues by mothers during delivery. The behavior, which is almost universal among nonhuman mammals (whales and dolphins are exceptions), is virtually absent in human cultures, past and present. There are occasionally individuals or groups who do it, but they are an exception and not the rule. Human cultures have actually shown a strong aversion to placentophagia, and some have even imposed taboos against the practice. Yet there was a bit of a fad in the hippie era when some nature-oriented communes were reported to have cooked up a placenta or two. Today we are in the midst of another placentophagia fad. Women, reporting encouragement by doulas and midwives and aided by unverified web information, are deciding to ingest placenta at delivery. They eat it raw, cooked, blended into smoothies, or dried and encapsulated, in order to prevent or reduce negative aspects of childbirth, such as postpartum depression, “baby blues,” fatigue, lactational insufficiency and hormone deficiencies. for more visit:http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mark-b-kristal/placenta-to-eat-or-not-to_b_1865446.html?utm_hp_ref=weird-news&ir=Weird%20News For such wacky and odd stories click http:// |

Former 007 Roger Moore Beaten Up By First Two Wives James Bond star speaks out about domestic violence Former James Bond actor Roger Moore has claimed he was beaten up while suffering domestic abuse in his first two marriages. The 84-year-old actor, who starred in seven Bond films including much loved films ‘Live and Let Die’ and ‘The Man With The Golden Gun’, claims he encountered violence from two spouses. He has said that he suffered abuse while married to ice skater Doorn Van Steyn, who Moore married when he was 19 and later wife Dorothy Squires. According to the AP, Moore told Piers Morgan of Van Steyn in an interview due to air on Friday (September 14) that, “She would scratch me,” and that, “My mother was always petrified when I went home to see that I had more scars.” Moore, who is now on his fourth marriage, said that Van Steyn had even attacked a doctor who was treating a cut on his hand, saying: “She said to him, ‘Aren’t you going to do anything?’ and punched him,” adding: “Which made a change, because normally she punched me.” Moore divorced Van Steyn in 1953 and married Welsh singer Dorothy Squires, who he said had “a great temper.” She apparently even once hit the actor over the head with a guitar before they divorced in 1968 and Moore married Italian actress Luisa Mattioli the next year. Moore has been married to Christina Tholstrup, a 71-year-old Scandinavian socialite, since 2002. Squires died in 1998 and Van Steyn in 2010. http://www.entertainmentwise.com/news/87784/Ex-James-Bond-Roger-Moore-Beaten-Up-By-First-Two-Wives For such odd and wacky news click http://

Schwarzenegger kept many secrets from wife Maria By Juliet Williams Associated Press October 1, 2012 | 8:55 am SACRAMENTO, California – Arnold Schwarzenegger said his lifelong penchant for secrecy and ability to put his emotions “on deep freeze” led him to keep many secrets from his wife Maria Shriver, eventually causing the dissolution of their marriage when he was forced to admit he fathered a child with the family’s housekeeper years earlier. Throughout their strained 25-year marriage, Schwarzenegger said he did not want to tell Shriver about crucial life decisions such as major heart surgery and running for California governor because he feared she would overreact and tell her well-connected family and friends. In his new autobiography, “Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story,” and in an interview airing Sunday on the TV news magazine “60 Minutes,” the former California governor acknowledged that his inability to be honest with people has hurt those closest to him. “That’s the way I handle things. And it always has worked. But, I mean it does not — it’s not the best thing for people around me because I sometimes — some information I just keep to myself,” Schwarzenegger tells reporter Lesley Stahl on “60 Minutes.” The former Mr. Universe traces his detachment to his bodybuilding days, where he says emotions make athletes lose. “So I became an expert in living in denial,” says the Hollywood action star and former governor. Schwarzenegger praises Shriver throughout the book as a partner and friend who was essential to his success, but also admits to keeping her in the dark about many career decisions. Shriver filed for divorce in July. Although he had been toying with the idea of running for governor for more than a year, Schwarzenegger waited until just days before the filing deadline for the 2003 recall election to discuss it with Shriver, writing in the book that he “didn’t want endless conversation about it at home.” Shriver opposed the idea, but was persuaded to soften her stance by her mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who told her to support her husband’s ambitions, or he might resent her for the rest of his life. Despite that struggle, he also didn’t inform her when he decided to seek a second term, writing that she had to read about it in the newspaper. “Total Recall” will officially be published Monday. The Associated Press purchased an early copy. But Schwarzenegger’s biggest secret, the child he had with the family’s housekeeper, became tabloid news last year after he left office. Shriver confronted her husband during a January 2011 counselling session and he finally acknowledged the boy, Joseph, was his. Schwarzenegger said he kept the secret from his wife for years because he was worried “it would get out.” He told Stahl he never even had a conversation with the housekeeper, Mildred Baena, about the son. Instead, after he began noticing the boy’s strong resemblance to him, around age 8, he just began giving Baena extra money. “I kind of put it away and just said to myself, ‘OK, I’m going to put this away. I’m going to fulfill my responsibilities,’” he tells Stahl. He declined to say whether he has a relationship with the child, who is now about 15, and he said he didn’t want to go into any more details about his relationship with Baena because he’s already caused Shriver and their four children enough pain. “I don’t want to reawaken and kind of talk about it because it’s not going to help them. And I just want to protect them as much as I can,” he says. There were other deceptions, too, including a “hot affair” with Danish actress Brigitte Nielsen while filming the 1985 action film “Red Sonja,” when he and Shriver were living together. He admits to other affairs, but tells Stahl they are “something that’s obviously between Maria and me.” Schwarzenegger said in the interview that his marriage and his family were the most important things in his life, but he caused them tremendous pain. “So the thing that really meant the most to me kind of fell apart because of my doing,” he says in the “60 Minutes” interview. “That is something that I will always look back and say, ‘How could you have done that?’” http://entertainment.inquirer.net/60894/schwarzenegger-kept-many-secrets-from-wife-maria For more odd and wacky news visit the blog http://

Facebook lets friends send real gifts 5:06 pm | Friday, September 28th, 2012 Share on facebook_likeShare 6 AP Photo/Matt Rourke, File SAN FRANCISCO—Facebook on Thursday added a feature that lets people send cupcakes, coffee, stuffed animals or other gifts to friends at the social network. Facebook said it was rolling Gifts out gradually, starting in the United States. “Every day, millions of people share special moments with their friends on Facebook,” the California-based firm said in a blog post. “Now, there is another way to celebrate these moments.” People can click on icons that look like bow-wrapped boxes to select gifts from an array of merchants then send friends virtual cards either as private messages or for posting in public timelines at Facebook pages. Intended recipients tell Facebook whether they accept gifts and where items should be delivered. “There are hundreds of gifts with more added every day: cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery, a stuffed animal from Gund, or a digital gift card from Starbucks,” Facebook said. The blog post showed the Gifts feature being used on a smartphone. Facebook has been under pressure to show how it will make money from users who are increasingly opting to access the social network from smartphones or tablets. http://technology.inquirer.net/17422/facebook-lets-friends-send-real-gifts for wacky and odd news click http:// |

Maria Pestrikoff fell off a cliff while texting. Texting and driving is bad. Texting and walking is worse, if you live at the edge of a 60-foot cliff. Maria Pestrikoff, of Kodiak, Alaska, was walking to the edge of a cliff near her home on Sept. 17 to discard a cigarette butt -- but she walked too far. She slipped on the grass and plummeted, according to the Associated Press. "She was in the rocks between the boulders and she was calling for help," her friend Anthony Burke told the Kodiak Daily Mirror [paywall]. "She was screaming in agony." Rescue workers swooped in to rescue Pestrikoff with ropes, and firefighters rappelled and used ladders to get down to her location. They had to move quickly, because Pestrikoff was injured and the tide below was creeping in toward her, the New York Daily News reported. She was stabilized, put in a stretcher and lifted up the cliff. She sustained several injuries, but was in stable condition after the rescue. "The tide was right up to her toes by the time they were able to http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/27/maria-pestrikoff-falls-off-cliff-texting_n_1921143.html?utm_hp_ref=weird-news for odd and wacky news always visit the blog http://

Facebook's "like" may land Filipinos in jail MANILA, PHILIPPINESThe Philippines has a population of over 95 million, more than a quarter of which use the Internet. And if it's really true that statistics don't lie, then Filipinos are definitely some of the most social online users. With more than 25 million Filipinos on Facebook and close to 10 million on Twitter, Filipinos rank among the top 10 users of both sites in the world. But if you're one of those who seldom think twice about "liking" a friend's post on Facebook or re-tweeting someone else's tweet, think again. Doing so in the Philippines may land you in jail. On Sept. 12, President Benigno Aquino III signed into law the Cybercrime Prevention Act, which defines several new acts of crimes committed online, including, among others, "CyberLove," identity theft, hacking, spamming, and pornography. But while all that's good, certain provisions of the law have millions of Filipinos up in arms - foremost of which is online libel. "If you click 'like,' you can be sued, and if you share, you can also be sued," said Sen. Teofisto Guingona III, one of the lawmakers who voted against the passage of the law. "Even Mark Zuckerberg can be charged with cyber-libel," the senator said. The provision, according to Guingona, is so broad and vague that it's not even clear who should be liable for a given statement online. And if you're found guilty, get ready to spend up to 12 years in prison. "Who is liable? It isn't clear. The one who made the original post? The ones who share? The ones who tweet? Even you, if you post a simple, 'hehehe,' right? Does that mean you agree?" Guingona said. What's clear is how much disagreement it has generated. Earlier this week, government websites were defaced by hackers protesting the law. Several petitions to declare the law unconstitutional have been filed before the Supreme Court. And it definitely hasn't stopped Filipinos from going online to voice their opposition. The Human Rights Watch has also expressed alarm over the controversial law, saying it seriously threatens freedom of expression. "Allegedly libelous speech, online or offline, should be handled as a private civil matter, not a crime," said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch. There is also concern that the law may provide sweeping powers for the government to shut down any website and tap into anyone's online data - with or without a warrant. The government has condemned the hacking of its websites but says it welcomes any protest as long as it is done in the proper forum. At least one senator who voted for the law, Francis Escudero, has acknowledged having glossed over the controversial provision and said it was a mistake. Meanwhile, Sen. Vicente Sotto III makes no apology for being one of two senators to insert the provision for libel at the very last minute. "Yes, I did it. I inserted the provision on libel. Because I believe in it and I don't think there's any additional harm," Sotto was quoted as saying in the local news website Interaksyon.com. Little surprise there, though. Sotto may actually have an axe to grind with the Filipino online community after coming under fire for allegedly plagiarizing an American blogger and the late Sen. Robert Kennedy for his speeches against a controversial family planning and reproductive health bill. Lawyers say the Philippines' Cybercrime Prevention Act has actually done what the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA), sought to achieve in the United States, which was to curb illegal sharing and downloading of copyrighted music and videos online. Both bills were defeated. There is increasing pressure from the public to repeal or replace the law but so far, but there is little sign that the government is backing down. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57522609/facebooks-like-may-land-filipinos-in-jail/ for odd and wacky news visit the blog http://

By Nick Collins, Science Correspondent 5:00PM BST 24 Sep 2012 A study of genealogical records from a Korean Imperial court, dating back more than 500 years, found that eunuchs lived on average 14 to 19 years longer than other men. In three cases, men who had been castrated lived to be older than 100 – an extremely rare feat between 1392 and 1910, the period covered by the records. Researchers said the difference was most likely because castrated men lack male sex hormones, which could be responsible for shortening most men’s lifespan. If hormones like testosterone are responsible for cutting men’s lives short, it could also explain why women tend to live longer on average, they added. The team from Inha University in South Korea analysed information on the lifespans of noble members of the Imperial court of the Chosun dynasty, including 81 eunuchs. Most of the boys had either lost their genitals in accidents, most commonly after being bitten by dogs, or deliberately been castrated so that they would be allowed into the palace. Although they were unable to father children, eunuchs were permitted to marry and could have families by adopting girls or castrated boys. Writing in the Current Biology journal, researchers Kyung-Jin Min and Cheol-Koo Lee said Korean eunuchs were 130 times more likely to live to 100 than people in developed countries. Kings and men in the royal family had the shortest lives of anyone in the court and only lived to their mid-forties on average, they added, suggesting that the benefits could not just be down to the benefits of life in a palace. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/9562958/Castration-the-key-to-longer-life.html For more odd and wacky news visit the blog http:// |
A New Jersey woman who pretended to be a cosmetic surgery professional has pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to charges of reckless manslaughter after one of her “patients” who hoped to get a penis enlargement died from a silicone injection. BY CHRISTINE HSU | SEP 12, 2012 01:09 PM EDT A New Jersey woman who pretended to be a cosmetic surgery professional has pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to charges of reckless manslaughter after one of her “patients” who hoped to get a penis enlargement died from a silicone injection. Kasia Rivera faces charges of manslaughter and the unauthorized practice of medicine for allegedly causing a 22-year-old man’s death with an injection of silicone he hoped would enlarge his penis. If convicted, Kasia Rivera, 35, could face up to ten years behind bars. Rivera was arrested in December last year following the death of 22-year-old Justin Street who had attended a ‘pumping party’ at her East Orange home on May 5 seeking a penile enlargement procedure, which authorities claim that Rivera advertised for in fliers at local businesses. Authorities say that Rivera had administered a silicone shot into Street’s penis in her apartment with no medical license or training. Police say that Street, a father of two, had died of a silicone embolism, and they say that Rivera may be may be guilty of having administered similar black market injections to other unsuspecting customers. His death was ruled as a homicide following an investigation. Rivera now faces charges of manslaughter and the unauthorized practice of medicine at Newark court where she appeared Tuesday. However, no others have come forward to testify and Rivera remains free after making the $75,000 bail. Silicon injections are becoming increasingly popular for enlarging body parts like the buttocks, but the only cosmetic use for non-encapsulated medical silicone approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is Botox for use around the eyes. However experts say that black-market illegal use by untrained practitioners remains as a cheap alternative to cosmetic surgery. While side effects are believed to be relatively rare, silicone can migrate through the bloodstream which can result in a potentially fatal clot in the heart or brain or lungs. Silicone can also migrate through tissue and leave disfiguring lumps. Last year, another New Jersey woman was charged with providing toxic buttock boosting silicon calk injections to six women, which left them needing surgery, according to the Star Ledger, and a fake surgeon was accused of illegally operating on at least five people in Florida in Augst. In Florida, Oneal Ron Morris had allegedly inserted deadly toxins like cement and tire sealants into her patients, before sealing her patients’ wounds with superglue. 10 Disgusting Common Ingredients In Cosmetics Published on 9/14/2012 under Weird Science - by Beverly Jenkins Reading labels on your cosmetics and lotions seems to require an advanced degree, so we've deciphered some of those ingredients for you. After reading this list of nasty stuff that's commonly used to make us feel prettier, we suddenly have an urge to toss out all of our products and go au naturale! 1. Expensive Perfume Contains Whale Poop https://www.oddee.com/_media/imgs/articles2/a98322_ambergris.jpg Well, it's either poop or vomit, depending on which end of the whale it comes out of. More on that in a moment. Ambergris is a waxy, yellow, solid substance that is generated in the intestines of Sperm whales to protect them from sharp objects that they sometimes swallow. It's often called the "gold of the sea." Just one pound of the stinky stuff can earn its finder up to $10,000. Whales either pass the substance along with their feces, or they can occasionally cough it up if there is a blockage. The unique scent of ambergris is often used in expensive perfumes, and it is sometimes eaten. It is considered a delicacy. 2. Most Lipstick Contains Crushed Parasitic Beetles https://www.oddee.com/_media/imgs/articles2/a98322_cochineal-beetle.jpg Cochineal Beetles (Dactylopius Coccus) are tiny insects that feed on cactus plants in Central and South America. Female cochineal beetles eat the red cactus berries, so when the beetles are crushed, a very powerful red dye is produced. Cochineal dye has been used for centuries, and it is very safe for most people, so it is commonly used in lipstick, ice cream, candy, yogurt, and eye shadow. In fact, Starbucks recently admitted to using cochineal dye in some of their beverages, causing a big problem for their many Vegan fans. 3. Fish Scales are in Nail Polish and Mascara https://www.oddee.com/_media/imgs/articles2/a98322_fingernails.jpg It is a common misconception that mascara contains bat guano, but in reality, mascara contains fish scales. That's... better? According to Snopes, the confusion arose because mascara does contain something called Guanine, which many people confused with guano. Guanine is a crystalline material that produces a shimmering or light-diffusing coloring ingredient in products like mascara and nail polish. It is made not from bat feces, but from ground-up fish scales, and it is commonly used in the formulation of bath products, cleansing products, fragrances, hair conditioners, lipsticks, nail products, shampoos and skin care products. 4. Roadkill in Lipstick, Eye Shadow, and Soap https://www.oddee.com/_media/imgs/articles2/a98322_rendering_tallow.jpg Tallow is a common ingredient in many products, including eye makeup, lipsticks, makeup bases and foundations, shampoos, shaving soaps, moisturizers and skin care products. It's made from animal carcasses. Tallow is made by rendering animal fat, which means boiling the carcasses to create fatty byproducts. The dead animals used to make tallow come from many different sources, including labs, slaughterhouses, zoos, shelters, and yes, roadkill. 5. Bull Semen in Hair Products https://www.oddee.com/_media/imgs/articles2/a98322_something-about-mary-cameron-diaz-hair.jpg Because of its high protein content, bull semen has become a popular ingredient in hair products. Used particularly for dry or damaged hair, the semen is mixed with a plant called Katera and applied to the hair in swanky salons. The process takes about 45 minutes, costs about $90-120 USD, and has been described as "Viagra for hair." 6. Dynamite in Deoderant and Exfoliants https://www.oddee.com/_media/imgs/articles2/a98322_Dynamite_Brown.jpg Diatomaceous earth (DE), a soft rock that is easily crumbled into a white powder, is one of the two components in dynamite. DE is also an abrasive substance that is used in most mild exfoliators, natural toothpastes, deodorants and powders. 7. Snail Ooze in Moisturizers https://www.oddee.com/_media/imgs/articles2/a98322_Snail-Secretion.jpg Snail ooze is collected and used as a ingredient in many famous moisturizers. The glycolic acid and elastin in a snail's secretion protects its own skin from cuts, bacteria, and UV rays, making it a great source for proteins that eliminate dead cells and regenerate skin. It is also helpful for removing scars, stretch marks and curing acne. 8. Shark Liver Oil in Lipbalm, Sunscreen, and More https://www.oddee.com/_media/imgs/articles2/a98322_sharkliveroil.jpg Squalane is a naturally-occurring oil that almost all plants and animals produce, including humans. The squalane that is extracted from the liver of sharks goes into creating Shark Liver Oil, which is used in many products. Its greasy consistency is easily absorbed into the skin, making it a perfect ingredient for many products like lip balm, sunscreen, and moisturizers. Though many companies have stopped using Shark Liver Oil due to environmental concerns, it is still a widely-used ingredient in beauty products. 9. Infant Foreskins In Moisturizer https://www.oddee.com/_media/imgs/articles2/a98322_shockedbaby.jpg TNS Recovery Complex by SkinMedica claims to use cells derived from human infant foreskins (NouriCel-MD) in their "revolutionary" line of anti-aging products. Using a combination of soluble collagen, antioxidants, natural growth factors, and matrix proteins, they claim to slow the aging process and encourage new cell growth to promote a youthful complexion. 10. Sheep "Wool Wax" is in Shaving Cream https://www.oddee.com/_media/imgs/articles2/a98322_lanolin.jpg Ever heard of Lanolin? Yes, of course you have. You've probably even smeared some on your body recently in the form of lotion, balm, or shaving cream. The fact is, Lanolin is collected from sheep wool and is used in vitamin supplements as a water-proofing agent, and yes, in countless beauty products. Lanolin is commonly-used to soothe sore nipples in breastfeeding mothers, but it is also equally effective at oiling up a baseball glove to make it more supple. Beauty giant Oil of Olay uses lanolin in their facial moisturizers, as do many other well-known companies. While putting something that was squeezed out of sheep wool onto your lips, face, or nipples might sound gross, be thankful that at least no sheep are harmed during the making of this useful product! http://www.oddee.com/item_98322.aspx |
Flooding: FRSC works out alternative routes to Lokoja-Abuja Road on SEPTEMBER 24, 2012 · in NEWS 11:01 am The Federal Road Safety Commission says it has worked out alternative routes to and from Abuja to lessen the agony of motorists, following the temporary closure of the flooded Lokoja-Abuja Road. A Republic Airlines flight attendant was detained and then charged with disorderly conduct after she attempted to pass through security at the Philadelphia International Airport with a loaded .38 revolver in her purse, triggering an incident in which police accidentally discharged the weapon while securing it, authorities said. According to officials, at 6:33 a.m. today, the flight attendant entered a Terminal C security checkpoint lane with a loaded .38 caliber Smith and Wesson Airweight revolver in her purse. A Transportation Security Administration employee discovered the gun on the x-ray machine and notified police. The flight attendant was taken to secondary screening room, where an airport police officer attempted to unload the gun, and it discharged into a wall. There were no injuries to passengers, employees or police, officials said. The flight attendant, identified by ABC station WPVI-TV in Philadelphia as Jaclyn Luby, of West Chester, Pa., had a valid Chester County permit to carry a concealed weapon, police said. The permit was confiscated and forwarded to the Chester County Sheriff, and the weapon — an Airweight revolver — was confiscated by the crime scene unit and transported to for testing. She was charged with disorderly conduct, as per Airport Unit policy. The officer who accidentally discharged the flight attendant’s gun is on desk duty pending completion of an internal investigation, police said The Airweight is a small frame, aluminum alloy, short barrel personal defense revolver and is among the most popular of these. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/09/flight-attendant-tries-to-bring-loaded-gun-through-airport-security/ For a collection of odd and wacky news in the weird wild world visit http:// |
A Nepali farmer who was bitten by a cobra in his rice paddy field has killed the snake by repeatedly biting it in return. “A snake charmer told me that if a snake bites you, bite it until it is dead and nothing will happen to you,” Mohammed Salmodin told the BBC. He has now been discharged from hospital where he was being treated for the snake bite. Officials say he will not be charged because the reptile was not endangered. “When I realised that a snake had bit me, I went home to get a torch and saw that it was a cobra. So I bit it to death,” he told BBC Nepali’s Bikram Niraula in Biratnagar. After he bit the snake to death, Mr Salmodin said that he went about his daily business as if nothing had happened. He says he finally agreed to go to hospital after pressure from family, neighbours and police. The incident took place on Tuesday in a village 200km (125 miles) south-east of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu. The snake he killed is reported to have been the common cobra. Nepal has a a wide variety of snakes, many of which are venomous – such as the cobra. Estimates suggest that there are 20,000 cases of snake bite in Nepal a year, most of them in the Terai southern plains, causing about 1,000 deaths, the AFP news agency reports. Advice for victims of snake bite can vary, partly because different snakes have different types of venom. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-19348834 For a collection of wacky news from the weird wide world visit the blog http://

A Houston police officer shot and killed a one-armed, one-legged man in a wheelchair Saturday inside a group home after police say the double amputee threatened the officer and aggressively waved a metal object that turned out to be a pen. Police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said the man cornered the officer in his wheelchair and was making threats while trying to stab the officer with the pen. At the time, the officer did not know what the metal object was that the man was waving, Silva said. She said the man came "within inches to a foot" of the officer and did not follow instructions to calm down and remain still. "Fearing for his partner's safety and his own safety, he discharged his weapon," Silva told The Associated Press. Police did not immediately release the name of the man who was killed. They had been called to the home after a caretaker there called and reported that the man in wheelchair was causing a disturbance. The owner of the group home, John Garcia, told the Houston Chronicle that the man had a history of mental illness and had been living at the house about 18 months. Garcia said the man had told him that he lost a leg above the knee and all of one arm when he was hit by a train. "He sometimes would go off a bit, but you just ignore it," Garcia told the newspaper. Silva identified the officer as Matthew Jacob Marin, a five-year veteran of the department. He was immediately placed on three-day administrative leave, which is standard in all shootings involving officers. Houston police records indicate that Marin also fatally shot a suspect in 2009. Investigators at the time said Marin came upon a man stabbing his neighbor to death at an apartment complex and opened fired when the suspect refused to drop the knife. On Saturday, Marin and his partner arrived at the group home around 2:30 a.m. Silva said there were several people at the house at the time. 11-year-old stabs dad to death for beating mom By Jhunnex Napallacan Inquirer Visayas CEBU CITY, Philippines–An 11-year-old girl stabbed her father dead Sunday night after she saw him hitting her mother on the head and cutting her leg with a hacksaw inside their house in Argao town, 58 km south of this city, the authorities said. The 38-year-old father was found dead on a vacant grassy lot a few minutes after he ran away from his daughter who stabbed him in the chest at about 11 p.m. inside their house in Barangay Canbanua, Argao. The police took custody of the girl who was later turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development, said Insp. Alan Batobalunos, Argao police chief. Batobalunos said the girl didn’t know that she killed her father. “Napatay nako si Papa ma? Mapriso ko (I killed papa, ma? Would I go to jail?” Batobalunos quoted the girl as asking her mother. But he added the girl didn’t cry but instead told the police that they would not know what would happen to her and her two sisters if their mother was killed. Their neighbor Miguel Tapales said they heard the couple arguing past 11 p.m. on Sunday. He said he just ignored it because they thought it was just one of the couple’s usual fights. After several minutes, Tapales said the 11-year–old girl went to their house and asked for help. “She asked for help because she feared that her father might come back and kill them. She said she stabbed her father after she saw that her father was cutting her mother’s leg with a hacksaw,” said Tapales in Cebuano. Her mother was later brought to Isidro Kintanar Memorial Hospital in Argao and was released on Monday morning. Perlita Buenaflor, another neighbor said they would always hear the couple quarreling. On Friday, the husband destroyed the wall of their house in the middle of the fight. Buenaflor said the arguments were triggered by jealousy because the victim was allegedly a womanizer. Batobalunos and the couple’s neighbors said the victim was fired from his job as a driver of a Department of Environment and Natural Resources personnel after he had an affair with a married officemate. He then worked at the Office of the Mayor in Argao but lost his job again when he had a fling with another officemate. Aside from the 11-year-old girl, the couple has two other daughters–a 13-year-old Grade 6 pupil and a two-month old infant. http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/272162/11-year-old-stabs-dad-to-death-for-beating-mom For a collection of wacky and odd news in the weird wide world visit http:// |

MILWAUKEE (AP) — President Barack Obama counters rival Mitt Romney by declaring that government can't solve every problem but is not the source of every problem. He says Americans should not only accept responsibility for themselves but also for their communities and the nation. Obama's message, at a Milwaukee fundraiser, was a response to Romney's recurrent critique that government is too intrusive. It was Obama's first appearance in Wisconsin since February. Shortly after the fundraiser, Obama stopped at a sausage shop and bought kielbasa and a bratwurst, pausing for photographers as he took a bite. Obama held two events in the state — one for 550 supporters who paid at least $250 apiece and another for 20 people who each paid $25,000. Apple Makes a Wrong Turn As Users Blast Map Switch BY IAN SHERR Apple Inc.'s move to replace Google Inc.'s mapping software with its own on its mobile devices sparked a world-wide consumer backlash, marking a rare strategic blunder by a company more accustomed to rave reviews from users. The artist who cooked and served genitals to a paying group of cannibalistic diners could now face two years in prison. Mao Sugiyama, of Tokyo, has been charged with indecent exposure more than two months after the headline-grabbing meal, which five patrons shelled out $250 to consume, according to News On Japan. WARNING: Graphic descriptions below. The 23-year-old self-described "asexual" and three other people who helped organize the event face charges, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. Before turning 22, Sugiyama underwent elective genital-removal surgery. The severed penis, testicles, and scrotal skin were divided up and garnished with button mushrooms and Italian parsley. An MPD spokeswoman told AFP that the four suspects conspired to "openly display the severed male genitals to the assembled 71 guests" at a music club on May 13. Sugiyama made sure to follow all laws, including a ban on organ sales, processing of medical waste and food sanitation requirements, according to comments cited by AFP from the artist. Sugiyama also said the dinner was designed to raise awareness about "sexual minorities, x-gender, asexual people." The Japan Daily Press reports that, if convicted of indecent exposure, Sugiyama could face up to two years in jail and a fine of roughly $32,000. Indecent exposure in Japan is described as displaying obscene objects, according to the Japan Daily Press. The paper seems to hint that the charge is a bit absurd considering people attending the event likely knew what they were in for. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/19/mao-sugiyama-indecent-exposure_n_1897449.html?utm_hp_ref=weird-news#slide=1019016 For a collection of such wacky stories visit http://

After two African villages started using mosquito nets to fight malaria, the local mosquitoes seemed to change their biting habits to avoid the barriers, according to a French study. Insecticide-treated bed nets are considered a key weapon in the global fight against malaria, which is transmitted by parasite-carrying mosquitoes and kills more than 650,000 people a year, according to the World Health Organization. In the study, which appeared in the Journal of Infectious Diseases, French researchers examined mosquito behavior before and after all households in two villages in Benin were given insecticide-treated nets. They found that mosquitoes seemed to change their hours of "peak aggression" from 2 a.m. or 3 a.m. to around 5 a.m. three years after nets were put up. And in one village, the proportion of mosquito bites inflicted outdoors rose. West Nile outbreak stresses lab testing limits, delays diagnosis Outdoor bites accounted for 45 percent of all bites at the outset but rose to 68 percent one year later and 61 percent after three years. The finding is "worrying since villagers usually wake up before dawn to work in crops, and as such they are not protected by mosquito nets," senior researcher Vincent Corbel, of the Montpellier, France-based Institute of Research for Development, said in an email. Still, the results come from just two villages in one country. "We cannot extrapolate to a wider geographical area and/or a different entomological context," Corbel warned. Malaria rates climbing again Mosquito nets have been credited with spurring big drops in malaria deaths, and a report for the Cochrane Collaboration, an international group that publishes rigorous reviews, estimated that for every 1,000 children protected by an insecticide-treated net, five to six lives would be saved every year. But in recent years, malaria cases have started to climb again in certain African countries, Corbel said. Experts have mainly been concerned about mosquitoes' growing resistance to the insecticides used in bed nets and for indoor spraying .http://news.mobile.msn.com/en-us/article_wld.aspx?aid=13978797&afid=12

LONDON (Reuters) - A British soldier who did not realise she was pregnant has given birth to a baby boy at the Camp Bastion field hospital in Afghanistan. The Ministry of Defence (MOD) in London said mother and baby were in stable condition and a specialist "Paediatric Retrieval Team" would fly out from Britain to care for them during the long flight home. "It is not military policy to allow servicewomen to deploy on operations if they are pregnant. In this instance, the MOD was unaware of her pregnancy," the ministry said. The Daily Mail newspaper, which first reported on the birth, said the woman herself was unaware of the pregnancy. The Mail said the Royal Artillery gunner had conceived before her six-month stint in Afghanistan began. Her pre-deployment training included an eight mile (13 km) march and five mile run. Her job in the field involved providing covering fire for troops fighting insurgents. She was taken to the field hospital after complaining of stomach pains and was informed by doctors that she was about to give birth, the Mail said, citing military sources. "This is a unique occurrence, but my team is well-rehearsed in the unexpected and they adapted brilliantly to this situation," said Lieutenant Colonel Andrea Lewis, commanding officer of the field hospital, quoted by the Mail. "I am pleased to report the mother and baby are doing well and we are all delighted at the outcome." That's a lot of tongue.Chanel Tapper, a Houston student originally from Los Angeles, has a tongue that measures 3.8 inches long -- just .06 inches short of the world record held by Britain's Stephen Taylor. But Tapper's tongue is good enough for the longest in the United States -- and longest female tongue in the world. Tapper says she first became aware of her super-long tongue when she was 8 and posed for Halloween photos with friends and they all stuck out their tongues. When the photo was developed, she noticed hers was longer than all the others. Now, that tongue has catapulted her into the 2012 edition of Guinness World Records. She says the reaction to her tongue is... well... in many cases it's what you might expect. "Most guys that know or already see it automatically have their mind in the gutter, and so do some females," she told Guinness World Records. "I don't have a boyfriend, but the last guy I dated didn't make it that big of a deal, and I really liked him for that." http://weirdnews.about.com/od/newworldrecords/ss/Guinness-Record-2012_3.htm For collections of such wacky news visit http://

LONG queues at Lagos filling stations may take some time to disappear, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) hinted yesterday. The corporation’s acting spokesman, Mr Fidel Pepple, said the scarcity, which he described as “artificial”, was triggered by the destruction of the NNPC’s pipeline at Arepo, Ogun State. Lagos was enjoying regular fuel supply until last week when bunkerers attacked the pipeline in Ibafo, Ogun State, to scoop fuel. Pepple said the NNPC was finding it difficult to fix the damaged facility following the killing of three officials by hoodlums. The officials were going to repair the vandalised pipeline when they were attacked. According to Pepple, the development has forced the corporation to bridge products by truck as against the pipeline. He said: “The NNPC is bridging products from Atlas Cove, Satellite and Apapa depots to Ibadan, Kwara and other Southwest states. But it is a little difficult to bridge as much as 11 million litres of fuel per day through trucks, which ordinarily is easily done through pipelines. There is no reported hitch in that intervention. “Besides, the repairs of the vandalised pipeline may take some time as the corporation would not risk the lives of its workers in a bid to fix a pipeline, until their safety is guaranteed.” The corporation had in a statement confirmed the killing of three of its after suspected oil pipeline hackers opened fire on a team of engineers and technicians of the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), deployed to repair the vandalised products pipeline in Arepo Village in Obafemi/Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State. Pepple said the corporation would not dare a repeat of such calamity, adding that the intervention through bridging by trucks would continue unhindered until the pipeline is repaired. There were long queues in many filling stations that dispensed Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Lagos yesterday, signalling scarcity. Motorists were apprehensive that the fuel scarcity that affected some states and Abuja, might have finally crept into Lagos. Some motorists bought fuel in containers as reserves in case the situation escalates. Attendants took advantage of the rush to make quick money by collecting between N100 and N200 from consumers. At some of the filling stations visited by our correspondent, the product was sold at the normal pump price of N97 per litre; other stations did not sell. At a filling station at Onipanu on Ikorodu Road, pump attendants demanded the payment of N200 before selling. It was also gathered that in some areas, such as Ikorodu, Ikotun and Apapa, the filling stations sold at N100 per litre . The NNPC, however, advised residents against panic buying. It said there was enough fuel to go round. Pepple said the corporation had 30 days sufficiency and that if there is scarcity in Lagos, it must be artificial scarcity. Motorists were taken aback by the sudden development. At a fuel station in Ojota, a litre was sold for N140. Those who intended to buy in containers paid N150 per litre. A motorist, who gave his name as Tony, lamented: “Can this country ever get anything right for once? This is an issue that we started the year with. Nine months after, we still have not made any headway. This is a country where people feel they can plunge the country into a state of emergency for their own selfish reasons. At the end of the day, it’s the masses who suffer it.” Others alleged the sudden scarcity could be a ploy to shoot up the price of the product. “Some unscrupulous marketers are definitely not comfortable with the way Nigerians drive in with ease and buy fuel at the approved prices. They would rather create artificial scarcity to shoot up the price,” Saheed Bamidele said. http://www.thenationonlineng.net/2011/news/61788-fuel-scarcity-to-persist-in-lagos-says-nnpc.html

How woman delivered monster in church On September 15, 2012 · In Periscope 6:26 pm This story contains a picture that some may find disturbing. Readers discretion is advised. By Simon Ebegbulem, Benin City Like people always say, “wonders shall never end”. Benin City residents were shocked on Tuesday when a pregnant woman, currently at large, was delivered of a creature that resembled a horse during a prayer session at the World Libration Ministry, Benin City. The drama was said to have started when the General Overseer of the church, Evangelist Silva Iyamu, commenced the prayer session, called, ‘Miracle hour’. Sunday Vanguard found that people from neighouring states throng the church in search of miracles, as a result of which there were hundreds of people during the programme. The pastor reportedly prophesied that they had a pregnant woman in the hall but that what was in her belly was not the baby she craved. According to the personal assistant to the pastor, Prince John Ogbovoh, who claimed to have witnessed the prayer session and the subsequent delivery of the woman, “It was a miraculous thing. She was not the only one that was delivered in the church. The pastor did it for a lot of people but this one was spectacular. The Photo below ia that of Evangelist Silva Iyamu and Mrs. Veronica Egiebor, ‘the nurse’ that took delivery The woman, we were told, had been in her matrimonial home for 11 years without a baby and the pastor said there was ‘a woman here for 11 years, no child,’ that the person always got pregnant but whenever she went for test, it will show and at another time it will not show again”. Ogbovoh continued: “So the woman came out and the pastor said ‘let us put you in an all night on Friday, but the woman pleaded with the congregation to go on with the prayers since she may not be able to wait. So the pastor now agreed. The pastor called her and asked the men to give little space and the pastor insisted that something inside the woman was not a human being, he said it was a funny creature. When the creature came out, it did not look like a human being but it looked like an animal”. Asked about the whereabouts of the woman and her name, the pastor’s aide explained:”We don’t even know her or whether she came with any member of her family. Nobody knows where she came from. We don’t always take records of people who came from outside Benin City but we know our members. We were expecting the woman to come back here today (Wednesday). People always come here to receive miracles and after that many of them come back to thank God for delivering them”. He narrated further: “When it happened, they asked her to go and wash up, the lady pastor assisted her. I remember she fell down and was unconscious and, sometimes, the pastor will ask members to leave the hall to allow for ventilation. So after she delivered the creature, there was pandemonium in the church. We did not even know when the woman left. In fact, the pastor was asking me where the woman was?, so we searched for her but we could not find her. I am sure the woman was ashamed, but God has done a miracle in her life and she is not supposed to be ashamed. The other photo is *Baby or monster? The scene of delivery…on Tuesday However, I believe she will come back because God has removed the burden that has stopped her from getting pregnant for years. The dead creature was left for a while for people to see. This morning, the people now ordered that they should throw the creature away because it is now becoming an embarassment for us in the church”. The nurse who delivered the woman of the creature, Mrs Veronica Igiebor, corroborated the PA’s story. “I was there; it’s not a story, yesterday, it seemed like a miracle”, she said. “The pastor poured anointing oil and a sachet of water on the woman and asked everybody to pray, he said, labour is going to start now. So the woman was swinging her body and finally she held somebody’s leg. She pressed and she pushed harder and something dropped and she fell. Behold my brother, I have never seen that kind of thing in my life before. People were calling it goat. But it looked like a horse. The object had a long neck, the ears were long. It was exactly like a horse, although it was in a baby form. But the pastor said nobody should touch it because it was demonic. Everybody ran away; I don’t know when the woman vanished. The story I heard about that woman is that the husband’s mother wanted him to marry another woman. It was said that this particular woman now trained the husband in the university. It was said the lady sold vegetable to get money to train the man. But when the man wanted to get married to her, the mother disagreed, rather brought another woman for him to marry. But the woman as expected refused to leave because she has laboured and obviously some body may have said okay since she refused to leave the man she will suffer. I guess that was why she has not been able to have any baby since.” Gen. Overseer of the church, Evang.Iyamu, speaking on the incident, stated: “When we were praying, a word of knowledge came that somebody had an issue with pregnancy. Sometimes, when she goes to ultra-sound, the pregnancy is either confirmed or not there. While the deliverance was on, we noticed that the woman was bleeding. We asked her to stand out, barely few minutes we heard people screaming. We thought it was a child, but I remember that when we were praying, I said what ever is hindering her from getting a baby should leave. Something of that nature, I’m not a medical doctor. So, I don’t know the appropriate word to use. So, when it came out, everybody was like weeping. It’s something we haven’t seen for a very long time. So, she was still bleeding and she collapsed. So we had to order everybody outside for ventilation to come in before she was revived and the women around cleaned her up”. Asked if the woman is a member of the church, he said: “The woman only came to my office asking for prayers, because she is not a Benin person”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/09/how-woman-delivered-monster-in-church/
