Born before Amelia Earhart, Iowa woman Dina Manfredini has lived in three different centuries on her way to achieving a milestone for longevity.

According to Guinness World Records, Manfredini, of Des Moines, is now the oldest living person in the world at 115 years and 245 days. She assumed that status after the death of Georgia woman Besse Cooper Tuesday at the age of 116.

Manfredini is also the only verified Italian person to reach 115 years old in documented history, according to Robert Young, the senior consultant of gerontology for Guinness World Records. She is just 15 days older than the second-oldest person in the world, Japanese record holder Jiroemon Kimura. She also is about a week away from being named the world’s oldest immigrant, a record set by Danish-born American Christian Mortensen, according to Guinness. (Mortensen died in 1998 at the age of 115 years, 252 days.)

Manfredini was born on April 4, 1897, and grew up in Pievepelago, Italy, before moving to Iowa in 1920 with her late husband, Riccardo. After her husband was injured at work, she helped support the family by working at a food processing factory and at a Des Moines ordnance plant that produced ammunition in World War II. She also cleaned houses on the side, which she continued to do until she was 90 years old, after raising her four children.

“I’m old, old lady, but I work,’’ she told the Des Moines Register in 2004. “Work hard. I like work.’’

Manfredini lived on her own until she moved into a nursing home in Johnston, Iowa, when she was 110. Her family told Guinness they believe her longevity comes from “hard work and everything in moderation.’’ While Manfredini's hearing is poor, she is in relatively good health and moves with the aid of a walker.

The oldest known person in history was Jeanne Calment of Arles, France, who was aged 122 years and 164 days when she died in 1997, according to Guinness. There are believed to be about 70 people worldwide who are 110 or older.

(Reuters) - A man behind a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic chained himself to the building's fence in protest on Tuesday, claiming that a botched DNA test led officials to wrongly deny his daughter American citizenship while also ruining his marriage.

Miguel Familia, a naturalized U.S. citizen from the Dominican Republic, alleged that a DNA test ordered by the embassy to prove the girl was his daughter came back negative and she was denied residency in 2005.

After he received the test results, Familia divorced his wife and accused her of having an extramarital affair, according to his lawyer, Carlos de la Rosa.

But for years his ex-wife continued to insist the girl was his daughter. That led Familia to seek two separate paternity tests on his own earlier this year and both tested positive, de la Rosa said.

By protesting outside the embassy, Familia was attempting to draw attention to his legal case and the mistake that he blames for tearing his family apart. He filed a complaint in the Dominican Republic in July against the embassy and a U.S.-based laboratory, seeking $180 million in damages.

"They destroyed my family and I lost seven years with her," he said of his daughter, Ashley.

A U.S. Embassy spokesman declined to comment on the lawsuit. Officials at the DNA testing laboratory, Clinical Test & Research in Ridgewood, New Jersey, could not be immediately reached for comment.

According the U.S. State Department website, DNA tests can be required for parents who are U.S. citizens seeking citizenship for their child where it is not clear a birth certificate is adequate proof showing a biological relationship.

(Reuters) - Hundreds of marijuana enthusiasts huddled near Seattle's famed Space Needle tower on Thursday night with pipes, bongs and hand-rolled joints to celebrate Washington's new status as the first state in the nation to legalize pot for adult recreational use.

The public gathering at the downtown Seattle Center, like a smaller turnout at a nearby spot hours earlier, defied a key provision of the state's landmark marijuana law, which allows possession of small amounts of cannabis but forbids users from lighting up outside the privacy of their homes.

Police kept their distance from both gatherings, underscoring mixed law enforcement messages about the new statute, known by its ballot designation as Initiative 502. The measure took effect on Thursday.

Seattle's city attorney issued a stern warning on Wednesday that public pot puffing would not be tolerated and that violators faced citations with $100 fines.

But the Seattle Police Department said its officers had been directed to limit any enforcement actions related to Initiative 502 to verbal warnings only, at least for now.

The new law, passed by voters last month in a move that could set the state up for a showdown with the federal government, removes criminal sanctions for anyone 21 or older possessing 1 ounce (28.5 grams) or less of pot for personal use.

Colorado voters likewise chose to legalize pot for personal recreational use, but that measure is not due to take effect until next month. Both states are among 18 that have already removed criminal sanctions for medical use of marijuana.

The Washington law also legalizes possession of up to 16 ounces (0.45 kg) of solid cannabis-infused goods - such as brownies - and up to 72 ounces (2.4 kg) of weed in liquid form.

But driving under the influence of cannabis or imbibing in public places where the consumption of alcohol is already banned remain illegal.

NO SELLING OR SHARING ALLOWED

The new law ultimately will permit cannabis to be legally sold and taxed at state-licensed stores in a system to be modeled after those in many states for alcohol sales. The state Liquor Control Board, along with agriculture and public health officials, have until next December to set up such a system.

For now, it remains a crime to sell, cultivate or even share one's own stash, even though the law allows individuals to purchase a limited amount for personal possession.

Ironically, the first known court challenge of the law came from a medical marijuana patient in Olympia, who filed suit last week seeking to block enforcement of a new standard for marijuana impairment while driving, similar to the blood-alcohol standard for drunken driving.

The plaintiff, Arthur West, says the new legal limit - 5 nanograms per milliliter of blood of THC, pot's active ingredient - would unfairly subject him to prosecution for a THC level at which he routinely drives without impairment. A hearing on his request for an injunction was set for Friday.

Little if any of the law's fine points seemed to matter to the mellow group of about 300 people - from college-age tokers to middle-aged Baby Boomers - who assembled at the Seattle Center fountain, a short distance from the Space Needle.

Convivial laughter, laid-back conversation and occasional coughing filled the air as the pungent smell of marijuana wafted through the crowd, many wearing sweatshirt hoodies to ward off the chill, on a cold, crisp evening.

'SAFER THAN ALCOHOL'

Carrying a sign, "marijuana is safer than alcohol," Jared Allaway, 30, described the night as "iconic."

"Seattle's always been friendly to cannabis," Allaway said. "Hopefully this will spread to eastern Washington. You get outside of Seattle, it's a different world."

Seated in a wheelchair that sported a "Goddess" sticker, medical marijuana patient Penny Simons, 52, said she traveled with friends from Renton, Washington, south of Seattle, to attend the smoke-in.

"It's history," she said. "I've been thinking about the people across the country who are jailed for this. It's nice to see things change."

A smaller crowd of about 100 pot-smoking celebrants had assembled about 19 hours earlier nearby for a count-down to the law taking effect at the stroke of midnight, blaring the music of reggae legend Bob Marley from loudspeakers.

Both gatherings were peaceful, with no reports of arrests.

[b]An HIV positive Colombian truck driver is alleged to have raped and infected more than 50 women across the country after going on a 'uncontrollable' rampage.

Libardo Rojas Duenas, 57, is said to have completely ignored state-issued medical advice after being diagnosed with the deadly virus in 2006.

Police say he raped a 16-year-old girl in the city of Cúcuta the following year, who soon after discovered she had contracted the sexually transmitted disease.

He then used his job to criss-cross the country, which ensured he evaded capture from the police. It also allowed him to attack his victims.

The trucker is also alleged to have had consensual sex with other women, but did not use protection and so also put them at risk of acquiring the virus.

He was detained by police in the Gorgonzola area of the capital Bogota yesterday, Radio Sante Fe reported.

Police sources say more than 50 women are at risk of infection due to his actions, with one officer likening it to a 'rampage'.[/b]

He is being charged with both rape and 'knowingly contaminating another person with HIV'. The latter crime alone is one that could condemn him to prison for up to 12 years.

A 14-year-old boy’s feet has grown so big, there is no shoe big enough for him. He was forced to go to school without shoes.

Xiao Meng, from Guangxi Zhuang, China, was born with a congenital neurofibromatosis, a genetic disease that causes his feet to swell abnormally.

His family is poor and they cannot afford to pay for the treatment needed to cure his disease, sadly the boy’s feet have grown so big that he is hardly able to walk .The boy’s compassionate teacher went to the Chinese media and asked them to help fundraise money for the boy’s treatment. The Chinese media did indeed raise a large amount of money after airing the boy’s plight..


The money will pay for his treatment and living expenses while he is staying in Shanghai, for treatment. Guangxi Branch of China Southern Airlines has provided free tickets for the boy and his family to travel to Shanghai as the journey to a new life begins.


The 14-year-old had his feet treated at Children's Hospital of Shanghai, China. Doctors first cut the excess growth from his feet before allowing half a year for recovery.

"We are a normal family and it breaks my heart to see him suffer, but we have no money for

medicine," his dad Meng Zhaoguang said.

Xiao Meng said: "I like school but it hurts to walk and I cannot go fast or participate in many games. Children sometimes call me names.”


Doctors at Children's Hospital of Shanghai in eastern China, are pleased with the results of the operation.

Doctor Tang Yujin said: “We are treating the condition and when that is stable we plan to reduce the size of his feet even more so they look and feel more normal.”

– Authorities in Florida said a homeless man sent to jail Friday was found to be concealing 30 items in a condom hidden in his rectum.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said Neil Lansing, 33, had been jailed following a Friday court appearance on undisclosed charges when corrections deputies performing a routine cell block search noticed a piece of condom sticking out of Lansing’s rectum, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported Tuesday.

Officials said they removed the condom and it was found to contain 17 blue pills, a cigarette, six matches, one flint, an empty syringe with an eraser covering the needle, a lip balm container, an unused condom, a pharmacy receipt and a coupon.

The sheriff’s office said Lansing, who is being held without bond, is facing charges of possessing a drug and a tobacco product in jail.

Two teenagers are in trouble for urinating in a container and using it to bake cupcakes, then serving it to their classmates.

The teenagers, from Enrico Fermi high school in Connecticut, could be facing criminal charges after they brought cupcakes to school and handed it out to students, while eating some themselves.

“They gave cupcakes to students who they don’t like," a student from the high school said.

Thankfully, no one needed medical attention as a result of the secret ingredient. But many of the students were “feeling sick” after learning that the cupcake they so graciously received two days in a row, was contaminated with urine.

The truth was revealed after one of the girls who baked the cupcakes told her friend about the secret ingredient. That friend decided that she had to warn the other students. She let everyone know to stay away from the cupcakes.

Some parents are calling for the two girls to be expelled from school.

Police are investigating the incident and charges might be filed.

The fighting took place just before Kardashian’s Bahrain branch opened its Millions of Milkshakes store.
Protesters were seen chanting "God is great" near the shopping complex in Riffa, about 12 kilometers south of the capital, Manama.


The protesters were ultimately dispersed by riot police.

Kardashian previously published praising comments about Bahrain on her twitter account, calling it "the most beautiful place on earth."

A new video uploaded to the internet, allegedly shows twins still inside their mother’s womb, kicking each other, according to press reports.

It seems like that for twins, sibling rivalry starts even before birth.

Amazingly clear video showed the twins kick each other and fight for space in the womb of their mother.

The images are of an MRI taken at the Center for Fetal Care London, the press reported.


"What this allows us to do is to see their positions in relation to others and the amount of space they occupy, and how they could move and push each

other along the way," Dr. Marisa Taylor-Clarke told news reporters.


The high scanning technology that produces more detailed images than conventional MRIs was used to learn more about the syndrome, twin-twin transfusion (TTTS), in which one twin takes blood from the other, called the donor twin.

"One of the problems with blood flow imbalances is that if you get a sudden change of blood from one twin to another, it can cause brain damage," Dr. Taylor-Clarke told news reporters. "So it can cause a stroke or bleeding in one or both of the twins' brains,” she continued. “MRI can detect signs of brain injury much sooner and with greater detail than ultrasound can at this time," she added.

A twin who loses too much blood may also suffer stunted growth.

In severe cases, TTTS can cause death.

PORTLAND, Ore. A seven-year-old girl suffering from leukemia is one of Oregon's youngest medical marijuana patients.

Her mother says she gives her daughter marijuana pills to combat the effects of chemotherapy, but her father, who lives in North Dakota, worries

about the effects of the drug on her brain development. Mykayla Comstock was diagnosed with leukemia last spring. Her mother treats her with a gram

of cannabis oil daily, The Oregonian reported. Mykayla's mother credits the drug for the leukemia's remission. "As a mother, I am going to try

anything before she can potentially fall on the other side," said Erin Purchase, 25, who with her boyfriend administers Mykayla's cannabis. The

girl says the drug helps her eat and sleep but also makes her feel "funny." "It helps me eat and sleep," Mykayla said. "The chemotherapy makes you

feel like you want to stay up all night long." Mykayla's father, who is divorced from the girl's mother, was so disturbed by his daughter's

marijuana use that he contacted child welfare officials.

More than 100 graves robbed in Benin for voodoo rituals


COTONOU (Reuters) – Tomb raiders have dug up more than 100 graves at a cemetery in Benin since Saturday for what authorities suspect is a black-market trade in human organs and skulls for voodoo ritual fetishes.

The incident is the most serious case of grave-robbing in the West African state, the world capital of voodoo where most of the country’s 9 million residents practice a benign form of the official religion.

Authorities in Dangbo, a village 10 km (6 miles) from the capital Porto-Novo, began an investigation after a mason working at the cemetery said he spotted several masked men digging up the graves, from which organs and skulls were removed.

“The desecration of graves is about money in this region,” said Joseph Afaton, director of the cemetery. “It is for sacrifices, or for bewitching.”

Body parts of humans and rare animals are prized by some people in central Africa for their supposed supernatural powers, and are used in occult ceremonies. Traffickers often obtain human remains from grave robbers, but a recent spate of killings has also been linked to the gruesome trade.

Authorities in Cameroon in September arrested five people suspected of trafficking human body parts after they were discovered at a checkpoint carrying a severed human head.

Several improvements were made by Research In Motion (RIM) on BlackBerry 10 (BB 10) seems not to make Yahoo CEO interested. In fact, in an interview, Marissa Mayer said she asked her employees to “do not use” BlackBerry.

Chinese Michelin Baby Startles Scientists


Ten-month-old Lei Lei, also known as the “Michelin baby“, has become somewhat of an Internet celebrity after photos of him were published on a Chinese government site.

The young boy had scientists scratching their heads, when he was brought to the hospital, earlier this month, on account of a fever. At just ten months, he weighs a whopping 20 kilograms, about the average weight of a normal six year-old. He is currently in a hospital, undergoing some tests that will hopefully reveal some hints about his abnormal size and weight.

Lel Lei’s parents say the boy has quite an appetite, and that he spends most of his days juts breast-feeding and sleeping. He also instinctively puts everything he touches into his mouth, and tries to munch on it.

The Michelin Baby is just the tip of the iceberg, as the obesity problem because more and more serious in China. As the country’s economy keeps growing, millions of people are becoming sedentary and developing weight problems. Over 60 million Chinese are obese, and over 200 million are overweight.

The winner of the presidential election met with the man he defeated Thursday as President Barack Obama had lunch at the White House with former Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

Romney arrived at the White House shortly after noon.

The lunch was closed to reporters but the White House issued a statement after the lunch saying that Romney "congratulated the President for the success of his campaign and wished him well over the coming four years. The focus of their discussion was on America's leadership in the world and the importance of maintaining that leadership position in the future. They pledged to stay in touch, particularly if opportunities to work together on shared interests arise in the future. Their lunch menu included white turkey chili and Southwestern grilled chicken salad."


Romney also went Thursday morning to a Washington hotel to meet for 90 minutes with his running mate, House Budget Committee chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., the first face-to-face meeting the two men have had since their defeat on Nov. 6.

After the meeting, Ryan released a statement saying, "I remain grateful to Governor Romney for the honor of joining his ticket this fall, and I cherish our friendship. I'm proud of the principles and ideas we advanced during the campaign and the commitment we share to expanding opportunity and promoting economic security for American families."

Afghanistan: teenage girl killed by spurned suitors
A 15-year-old girl had her throat cut after her father refused a marriage proposal from relatives, police have said.

The provincial director of women's affairs said the province had been hit by a wave of violence against women

The girl, Geesa, was attacked earlier this week by two men from the spurned family as she went to collect water from a stream in her village in northern Afghanistan.

The attack came after her father, Mohammad Rahim, had turned down a marriage offer for the girl, saying she was too young to be engaged.

"At this stage it looks like they wanted to marry her and the father refused, so they killed her," said Syed Sarwar Hosseini, police spokesman for Kunduz province.

Two men, named as Massoud and Sadeq, have been arrested on suspicion of the murder, in Kulkul village of Imam Sahib district, he said. The two men were
relatives of Geesa and lived in the same village.

The provincial director of women's affairs said the province had been hit by a wave of violence against women.


Nadira Giah said 11 girls and women had been killed this year, up fivefold from last year.

Hazel Jones always wondered why she suffered from terrible cramps and heavy periods during puberty. But it wasn't until she turned 18 that she was given her astonishing diagnosis - she had two vaginas.

The blonde 27-year-old from High Wycombe has the million-in-one condition uterus didelphys, which means she has two separate uteruses and cervixes as well.

But she told ITV's This Morning she was comfortable with having the condition, despite the fact she had to effectively lose her virginity twice.

'Once I found out what it was I told everybody,' she told TV hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield.

'I thought it was amazing and it's definitely an ice-breaker at parties'

She added: 'If women want to have a look, I'm quite happy to show them, it's not something I'm embarrassed by.'

Hazel went to the doctor after her long-term boyfriend told her she was 'different' in the genital area.

Sitting next to Hazel, Doctor Dawn Harper explained: 'When developing in the womb girls start with two tubes. These fuse and the septum breaks down and
forms one uterus.

'In around one in 3,000 cases the septum stays within the uterus but to actually have two separate uteruses is much rarer.'

Hazel said previously she had found sex very uncomfortable, but now she didn't suffer any adverse effects. She turned down surgery as it could have left significant scar tissue.



She revealed: 'When I was younger I thought I was having cystitis and urine infections from a young age when I was tearing the middle septum.'

She added that she once asked a school friend which 'hole' she should use for a tampon, but became too embarrassed to continue the conversation after her friend thought she meant she put it up her bottom.

She added: 'I used to suffer from horrendous cramps and my periods could be very heavy. I now know that my periods were worse because I have two wombs.

'So if I get pregnant I have to be very aware not to get pregnant on the other side.'

Dr Harper added that Hazel was more likely to have a breached birth as her uteruses were smaller and she was more likely to need a caesarean section.

She must also have double smear tests when checking for cervical cancer.

But Hazel is unphased by the prospect.

Circumcision Turned Amputation: Doctor Sued For Removing Man’s Penis Without Consent

Frankfort, KY — A Kentucky man that went under the knife for a circumcision only to wake up with an amputation of his penis has asked the Kentucky Court of Appeals to overturn a previous verdict siding with the doctor who performed the operation.

Phillip Seaton was supposed to undergo a standard circumcision as a treatment for an inflammation in October of 2007, but instead woke up to find his manhood missing.

The unscheduled amputation was necessary according to Dr. John Patterson, who discovered during the operation that Seaton had cancer in his penis.

Seaton contends, however, that the amputation of his penis was not necessary, because other options could have been available to him, reports The Huffington Post.

The lawsuit contended that Dr. Patterson should have received consent from Seaton before performing the amputation. Seaton’s lawyer, Kevin George, stated:

“The point is … a patient has a right. The doctor does not have the right to do whatever he wants, even if it turns out to be reasonable.”

Smoking doubles risk of skin cancer

It is well known that cigarette smoking affects the health of individuals by increasing the risk of life-threatening diseases like cancer, lung and heart disease. There are many other harmful effects of cigarette smoking, including damage to the body's largest organ, the skin.

The addictive nature of smoking can make it difficult for individuals to quit, even though they are aware of links to diseases like cancer. Some individuals believe it would not happen to them. However, when some smokers can actually see the harmful effects of smoking on their skin, it can help encourage them to quit.

Premature ageing

Cigarette smoking has been shown scientifically to double the risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma, which is a type of skin cancer. Cigarette smoking is also a major cause of premature ageing. We all undergo natural ageing as we get older. However, in addition to this, some people age faster than others and develop premature ageing as a result of their lifestyle and the environment.

Sunlight is the most common cause of premature ageing; however cigarette smoking has been shown by some studies to result in even more premature ageing than sunlight.

The more one smokes, the greater the risk. In fact, one study showed that smoking more than 20 cigarettes a day can age the skin by almost 10 years! Women also seem to be at greater risk than men. Some of the manifestations of a 'smoker's face' include increased facial wrinkling, an ashy grey or reddish orange appearance (more so in fairer individuals), puffiness and gauntness. The skin can also develop coarseness, dryness, uneven skin complexion and dilated blood vessels.

Skin wrinkling

Even though the relationship between smoking and skin wrinkling was shown from 1856, the exact mechanisms by which smoking causes ageing are not fully understood. It is believed that smoking reduces the amount and quality of collagen and elastic fibres, which the skin needs to maintain firmness and elasticity. It causes a narrowing of blood vessels in the skin, reducing the blood supply to these vital fibres.

The smoke itself can also have a toxic effect on skin cells and the heat can directly burn the skin. In addition, smoking reduces the levels of vitamin A in the skin and leads to dryness of the skin.

Smoking also slows down the skin's ability to heal itself after skin injury and surgery. It can affect the healing of leg ulcers, and skin grafts. The risk of certain viral infections is also greater in smokers. For example, it increases the risk of genital warts and of cancers like cervical cancer and penile cancer developing from those warts. Smoking also increases the risk of getting skin conditions like psoriasis, diseases of blood vessels in the skin, skin lupus, hidradentis suppurativa, and oral diseases.

Smokers can consult their doctors and other health-care workers for more information about quitting smoking. Dermatologists can also help treat the skin conditions caused by smoking. However, as the saying goes, 'prevention is better than cure'.

Washington, Nov. 23 (ANI): A police officer in Florida has quit after admitting he told colleagues that he would volunteer to assassinate President Barack Obama.

Sam Koivisto, of the Jacksonville Police Department, told the Florida Times-Union that his comments had been blown out of proportion and that he had planned to retire in five months anyway.

The 57-year-old retired earlier this month while facing an internal investigation into his comments to other officers after the election, Fox News reports.

He told them that if an order came to kill Obama, he 'wouldn't mind being the guy'.

"If an order was given to kill Obama or something, then I wouldn't mind being the guy," he told colleagues, according to the newspaper.

According to the report, when questioned by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office integrity unit, he said he also didn't care if a nuclear explosion killed everyone in the Northeastern U.S because they supported Obama.

He told the investigators his comments were hyperbole and not actual threats. (ANI)

Shepherd Albert Abadzhanov told the newspaper Trend that the six-legged lamb is having a bit of trouble walking, but is developing normally otherwise.

In his 25 years of shepherding, Abadzhanov has never seen such a thing. I have been asking the other shepherds, but none of them remember such [a] case. There were three-legged lambs, one-eyed, but not [a] six legged, bisexual one, he said.

The lamb also seems to be a hermaphrodite. It has both male and female sex organs.

Veterinarian Otto Zardiashvili told Trend that this six-legged lamb is most certainly an anomaly. Most probably there were twins, but then the embryos were united, and we've got a strange lamb, he said.

Two-headed cobra born in China

A two-headed cobra has been born in China. Such anomalies among snakes are rare but they do happen. As far as anyone knows, this is the first incidence of such an occurrence with a cobra.


The owner of the snake is one Mr. Liu, a railroad worker who breeds snakes as a hobby. He bought 10 snake eggs to hatch at his home in Jiangxi province in eastern China.

He got the surprise of his life when he first saw the reptile, which is able to eat out of both sides of its mouth simultaneously.

“When the cobras hatched out, one of them had two heads. The cobra is able to eat using both of its mouths…Its four eyes were cloudy at birth, but that will change when the snake sheds its skin for the first time,” said Liu.

Snakes born two heads have been known to live up to 20 years in captivity, and Thelma and Louise, a two-headed snake that lived at the San Diego Zoo in California, had 15 offspring during her lifetime. Still, these snakes have many difficulties, and two heads aren’t better than one in this instance.



The major problem with this anomaly is that both snake heads have to decide they are hungry at the same time, and then they have to agree to pursue the same prey. Then they might fight over which head gets to swallow the prey.

To make matters even more complicated, since snakes operate by smell, if one head catches the scent of prey on the other’s head, it may attack and try to swallow its second head!

Snakes with two heads occur in the same way Siamese twins are born to humans. A developing embryo starts out normally as it begins to split into identical twins, but then for some unknown reason that process is interrupted part way, leaving the twins joined. Variations occur at the point the embryo ceases to separate, and snakes, just like Siamese twins, can be joined at the breast, hip or head.

Lizzie Velasquez has a rare and undiagnosed syndrome that prevents her from putting on weight

Miss Velasquez has a rare condition which prevents her from gaining weight even though she eats up to 60 small meals a day.
Despite consuming between 5,000 and 8,000 calories daily, the communications student, has never tipped over 4st 3lbs.

"I weigh myself regularly and if I gain even one pound I get really excited," said 5ft 2 ins Miss Velasquez, who wears size triple zero clothes.
"I eat every 15-20 minutes to keep my energy levels up.

"I eat small portions of crisps, sweets, chocolate, pizza, chicken, cake, doughnuts, ice cream, noodles and pop tarts all day long, so I get pretty upset when people accuse me of being anorexic."

She was born four weeks prematurely weighing just 2lb 10oz. Doctors found there was minimal amniotic fluid protecting her in the womb.

"They told us they had no idea how she could have survived," said Miss Velasquez's mother Rita, 45, a church secretary.[/b]

Doctors speculated Lizzie might have the genetic disorder De Barsy syndrome but soon ruled it out as it became clear she did not have learning difficulties.
"They kept on trying to figure out what was wrong with her but we treated her like any other child," said Mrs Velasquez, who charted her daughter's health in dozens of notebooks.

She was taken to see genetic experts but they still could not diagnose her.
Miss Velasquez's case has fascinated doctors all over the world and she is part of a genetic study run by Professor Abhimanyu Garg, MD, at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Professor Garg and his team now believe Lizzie may have a form of Neonatal Progeroid Syndrome (NPS) which causes accelerated ageing, fat loss from the face and body, and tissue degeneration. People with PRS often have triangular and prematurely aged faces with a pointy nose.
He said: "I am aware of a small number of people that have similar conditions to Lizzie but each case is slightly different.

"We cannot predict what will happen to Lizzie in the future as the medical community are yet to document older people with NPS.
"However Lizzie is lucky to have healthy teeth, organs and bones so the outlook is good. We will continue to study her case and learn from her." Miss Velasquez has helped to write a book about her incredible experiences.
It is due to be released in September.

A 14-year-old girl, stole her mother’s husband, married him and had a baby together, according to court proceedings. The Chinese teenager apparently had a lovechild with her stepfather. She is threatening to cut off ties with her mother unless she divorces him.

The girl, named Fangting, began an affair with Liu Guochang, her 34-year-old stepfather when she was just 14-years-old, a local newspaper reported.

Fangting, now 16, gave birth to a daughter last year and demands that her mother Huang Changhong divorce Liu so they could be together.

To make matters worse, Huang and Liu also have a young son together. Huang discovered the affair in 2009, when she found a love letter the girl had written to her husband. After the surprising discovery, she sent her daughter to live with her grandparents, the newspaper reported.

But Huang, who worked in another city, did not know that her husband continued to meet Fangting. He even started to have sex with the girl. A year later, the couple finally escaped to Ganzhou Jiangxi province. After the baby was born, the stepfather sent a text message to his wife, congratulating her for being a grandmother.

In April Fangting contacted her mother. Huang texted her, saying: "Now I am the wife of Liu Guochang. We've been together for two years and we have a daughter. Please divorce him. Otherwise, I will take the case to court." The mother could not take it anymore and contacted police.

Liu was arrested in May. In court Fangting told the judge she was in love with the husband of her mother. She alsosaid the sexual relationship occurred with her permission. Liu was sentenced to 11 years in prison last month. The charges include rape and being involved with a teenager. He has filed an appeal.

A one-eyed goat that was born on a farm in Perundurai, Erode district, drew crowds to the farm as curious people paid a visit to see the rarity.

The farm owner, Kandasamy, 45, who has been breeding goats for the past 10 years, said that this was the first such occurrence.

“I have never witnessed such an incident in the past,” he said. “A female goat gave birth to two calves, one of whom has just one eye right in the centre of its forehead.”

Vetenarians pointed out that it was an anomaly and the outcome of a genetic disorder.

According to Coimbatore VOC Park Zoo director Dr K. Asokan, it’s a genetic disorder and caused due to chromosome changes in the goat’s system. “It’s rare to see such goats in the villages,” he said

Experts at We Love Our Health, a men’s health service based in Britain, have created a simple litmus test to gauge whether or not men are overwight: Look down. Though it seems to work overseas, domestically, the idea has received some skepticism. Dr. Sanjay Jain, a practicing physician in the Washington, D.C. area, told MSN: “Some men may not take kindly to that kind of approach.” You think?

Still, Dr. Jain does endorse some version of the simple penis-check test for American doctors. “Are we doing a good job winning this obesity battle? No, we’re losing. Clearly, we’ve tried different methods as physicans and health professionals to get the message out to lose weight,” Jain said. “If it works, why not? Every patient has a different message that they can relate to.”

SKOPJE, Macedonia (AP) — Macedonia's health minister is looking for assistants — but they have to be certified geniuses.

Nikola Todorov's ministry announced Thursday that it needs seven to 10 advisers, to consult once or twice a month for a daily fee of 3,000 to 5,000 denars (€50-80, $64-100).

The announcement said successful candidates must possess an IQ score of at least 140, certified by the Mensa International IQ society. They also must have a university degree and speak at least two foreign languages.

Macedonian public servants are not normally required to take IQ tests, but Todorov can be demanding. He recently angered state doctors by linking their salaries with the number of patients they treat.

The average intelligence quotient is 90 to 110. Above 140, people are considered geniuses.
