HealthMy 'Pikin Syrup' Maker Is Dead by webaplanet(op): 7:35am On Nov 06, 2012
The producer of ‘My Pikin’ teething mixture, Kola Gbadegbesin Okunlola, is dead.

The late Kola Gbadegbesin Okunlola.

He had been standing trial alongside his company, Barewa Pharmaceutical Limited, and two staff of the company, Adeyemo Abiodun and Egbele Austin Eromosele.

Okunlola died on 27 October, 2012, aged 58 years.

Sources said Okunlola died at St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, where he was admitted when he suffered haemorrhage stroke.

A native of Ikimu, Osun State, Southwest Nigeria, the late pharmacist attended Akinorun Grammar School, Ikirun, University of Bradford in the U.K. He qualified as a pharmacist 39 years ago.

On 8 March, 2009, he was arraigned alongside his company with two other staff on a six-count charge of manufacturing and distributing adulterated drugs.

In the criminal charge filed by senior state counsel from the office of Attorney-General of the Federation, A.K. Aliu, it was alleged that Okunlola, Abiodun, Eromosele and Barewa Pharmaceutical Company of 1-5 Olugbo Close, Shasha, Akowonjo, Lagos, on or about 2008, conspired together to manufacture and distribute adulterated drug ‘My Pikin’ baby teething mixture with the intention to cause death or grievous bodily harm to members of the public.

They were therefore accused of committing an offence contrary to Section 1(A) of the Counterfeit and Fake Drug and Unwholesome Processed Foods Act 25 of 1999 which is punishable under Section 3 of the same Act.

They all pleaded not guilty and their counsel, Mr. Osaro Eghobamien, SAN, applied that they be admitted to bail.

But the prosecutor, A.K. Aliu, opposed the bail application on the grounds that the drugs allegedly produced by the accused persons had caused the death of so many children.

In his reaction, Eghobamien told the court that the claim by NAFDAC that ‘My Pikin’ has caused the death of many children was nothing but a ruse as the accused persons were not charged with murder, no death certificate was filed before the court and investigations conducted revealed that the children who died were above the age of children that can use baby teething mixture.

He said, invariably, the death of the children whose identities were not disclosed to the court might be as a result of other causes.

After listening to the submission of the counsel to both parties, the presiding judge, Justice Okechukwu Okeke said there is no death certificate filed before the court to prove that deaths occurred by the use of the drug.

He, therefore, admitted the accused persons to bail on stringent conditions. They were able to meet the bail conditions in about three months.

Justice Okeke also warned that if the bail was used as a ploy to delay the trial, it will be revoked.

Okunlola was equally arraigned before a Kaduna High Court charged with murder. But the case was later struck out for lack of diligent prosecution.

The trial in Lagos dragged on for about three years. The prosecutor managed to call two of his witnesses before Okunlola died.

When P.M.NEWS called his counsel, Mr. Eghobamien, he said it was unfortunate that the man died before the conclusion of his trial, as he could not prove his innocence before his death.

Some of his neighbours at 16, Ilawe Street, Gbagada, Lagos, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the man was a good and amiable person.

They opined that his problem started when NAFDAC in frenzy of media trial claimed that the man had been producing baby mixture that had killed many children.

They added that his factory was closed down and even another factory that was not part of Barewa Pharmaceutical Company was also closed down. All efforts made by the late pharmacist to ensure the other factory was reopened was abortive.

One of the children of the deceased, Mr. Femi Okunlola, 33, a manager with an oil and gas company, who spoke with P.M.NEWS on behalf of his family, said his father lived in Lagos with his wife while his other four children were based abroad. According to the burial programme released by his family, there will be a wake on 14 November, 2012. He will be buried 16 November, 2012 at Ikoyi Cemetery, Lagos.

Okunlola had worked briefly with Boots Pharmaceutical Company, London and when he returned to Nigeria, joined Pfizer Pharmaceutical Company before he established Barewa Pharmaceutical Company.

AutosHyundai, Kia Overstate Fuel Efficiency Of Their Cars, Will Reimburse Customers by webaplanet(op): 11:11pm On Nov 05, 2012
Hyundai, Kia overstate fuel efficiency of their cars, will reimburse customers
Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp. say that many car models they’ve been selling since 2010 are not as fuel-efficient as they originally claimed.

Hyundai Motor Co. and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp. announced Friday that many Hyundai and Kia models they’ve been selling since 2010 are not as fuel-efficient as they had claimed, the Washington Post reported. The companies said it was due to an internal testing problem and promised to reimburse customers for the extra money they’re spending on gas, a move that could cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

US Environmental Protection Agency tests determined that 13 Hyundai and Kia models had actual mileage that was 1 to 2 miles less per gallon than advertised, with one version of the Kia Soul getting a whole 6 miles less per gallon on the highway, according to Reuters.

The EPA’s auditing program has found vehicles whose mileage stickers needed to be corrected only twice since 2000, and “this is the first time where a large number of vehicles from the same manufacturer have deviated so significantly,” the agency said, according to the Washington Post.

Car owners will be reimbursed via debit card, based on their local fuel price and the miles they’ve driven, Reuters reported.

According to Reuters:

An extra 15 percent to the amount will be added to acknowledge the inconvenience and owners will be able to refresh their cards for as long as they own their vehicles, the companies said.

About 900,000 cars in the US and 172,000 cars in Canada were sold with inflated mileage stickers, Reuters reported. If all 900,000 US owners are compensated, the car companies will pay out nearly $80 million.

“The good news is that the system worked,” auto analyst John O’Dell of Edmunds.com said in a statement, according to the Washington Post. “Although it took more than a year, the EPA did catch the discrepancies and is requiring Hyundai and Kia to correct their claims and make it up to customers.”

Nairaland GeneralCoffin-shaped Toilet Built In Australian Cemetery by webaplanet(op):
Cemeteries are often a place of sadness, where people go for a funeral to mark the end of a life or to visit a dead loved one.

There are some people in the town of Millaa Millaa, Queensland, Australia, who decided that their local cemetery needs something to cheer people up, something that will make people stop and stare.

So they installed a coffin shaped toilet inside a small Australian town’s cemetery.

Unfortunately not everyone has a sense of humor and some residents took offense to the coffin toilet.

A group of individuals from Australia came up with the idea of a coffin shaped toilet after the town council said it would cost about $80,000 to build a proper restroom at the cemetery. In order to avoid the high cost, the controversial idea was born.

While some people don’t like the unusual toilet, other residents see it as art and are happy with the cemetery’s new bathroom.

Local resident Brian Norton said: “Imagine if they had a funeral there, I don’t think it’s going to go over very well, especially if people are there from out of town, they might think, ‘What sort of town is this?’"

PoliticsJacob Zuma Backs Traditional Courts Instead Of “white Man’s Way” by webaplanet(op): 1:30pm On Nov 04, 2012
Jacob Zuma backs traditional courts instead of “white man’s way”

November 4, 2012 admin Uncategorized Stories No comments

Jacob Zuma, the South African president, has issued a ringing endorsement of traditional courts, saying that problems should be resolved “the African way, not the white man’s way”.

Mr Zuma, a proud Zulu who himself subscribes to traditional practices such as polygamy, said that those living in rural communities in South Africa found the traditional justice system a better way of resolving their disputes.

“Prisons are done by people who cannot resolve problems,” he was quoted as saying by South Africa’s Times newspaper.

“Let us solve African problems the African way, not the white man’s way. Let us not be influenced by other cultures and try to think the lawyers are going to help.

“We have never changed the facts. They tell you they are dealing with cold facts. They will never tell you that these cold facts have warm bodies.”

His comments have caused consternation among lawyers, opposition politicians, civil society groups and women’s’ formations in his own party who have slated the Traditional Courts Bill currently making its way through parliament.

It seeks to formalise a system whereby 18 million people living in rural areas fall under the jurisdiction of tribal chiefs and village councils who will rule on civil and criminal matters, issuing penalties including forced labour and fines of sheep, cattle and food. In some cases, they will be able to strip offenders of “traditional benefits” such as access to land, thereby denying them food and shelter.
The bill is championed by the influential Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa, which has hinted that its support for a second term for Mr Zuma at the ANC’s December elective conference depends on it.

But it has been staunchly opposed in a series of public consultations because it bases traditional court jurisdictions along the apartheid-era “tribal homeland” boundaries, forces people to accept customary laws which are currently consensual and denies them the right to legal representation enshrined in South Africa’s constitution.

Lulu Xingwana, Mr Zuma’s Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, has called for it to be redrafted altogether amid concerns of how women will be treated given traditional patriarchal rules.

“It’s oppressive to women and discriminatory,” she told a parliamentary hearing in September. “Why are we taking our people back to the dark ages?”

In an official speech on Wednesday to the National House of Traditional Leaders, which sits beside MPs in parliament, Mr Zuma acknowledged “genuine concerns” raised about the bill in public consultations.

He called for the bill to be strengthened to protect the rights of women and ensure all South Africans had access to all forms of justice.

But in unscripted comments made after the speech, he made clear his preference for an “African” courts system.

Desmond Lesejane, of the Alliance for Rural Democracy which has called for the bill to be withdrawn, said the president’s comments did not surprise him.

“The Ministry of Justice has made clear that it will ignore much of what came from the public consultations and this would explain why their officials are so insistent on this,” he said.

The alliance, which brings together some of South Africa’s biggest civil society groups in opposition to the bill, claims the bill even ignores traditional cultural practices, by doing away with the old tiered system of traditional courts to give one person, often a political appointee, unilateral power.

“President Zuma can push for tradition but this is a corrupted version of cultural practices,” he said.

Nairaland GeneralFour-year-old Boy With 13 Fingers And 12 Toes by webaplanet(op): 10:06pm On Nov 03, 2012
The four-year-old boy with 25 fingers and toes including double thumbs - but his parents don't want him to have surgery

Arpan has 13 fingers and 12 toes - he lost another finger when he was two

He suffers from two genetic disorders, that caused extra digits and his double thumbs to fuse

His parents don't want him to have surgery due to his local fame

Children often learn to count to ten using their fingers or toes, but that wouldn't help one four-year-old boy in India who has 25 digits.

Arpan Saxena from Bhopal, India, suffers from two rare genetic disorders called Polydactyl, a disorder that gives rise to excess digits being formed, and Syndactyly, which leads to fingers and toes being fused together.

Arpan, who has 13 fingers and 12 toes, enjoys celebrity status in Bhopal, with his picture plastered on city walls.

Unlucky for some: Arpan Saxena shows his 13 fingers at his home in Bhopal, India. He said he liked being a local celebrity
Arpan says he wishes he could wear normal shoes
'I love it when people come to see me and take photos,' he said.

'But the only thing I don't like is that I can't walk a lot because my feet never fit in any shoes.'

His father, Anil Saxena, 35, a rickshaw puller, confirmed the toddler was originally born with 26 digits.

'When he was born, we were surprised to see that he had 26 fingers and toes,' he said.

'I had never ever heard of anyone being born with so many fingers.'

Following an accident, Arpan lost a finger when he was just two years old.

'He was out playing when he injured one of his fingers and it just sort of came off,' Anil said.

Arpan's mother, Tanu, 30, said they wouldn't be getting Arpan an operation, even though a lot of people have offered help.

'Its every parents dream to be known for their children,' she said.

'Arpan is famous all over Bhopal and we like it that way, and I am apprehensive about how an operation might affect him at this age.'
His father survived the Bhopal disaster - a huge industrial accident at a pesticide plant in 1984. Campaigners say at least 15,000 were killed within days and that the effects of the gas continue to this day. They also say Bhopal has an unusually high incidence of children with birth defects, as well as cancers and other chronic illnesses.

Arpan does not hold a world record for most number of fingers and toes.

The current world record is held by fellow Indian, Akshat Saxena, a two-year-old boy who was born with 34 fingers and toes.

IslamParents Attack Daughter With Acid For Talking To Boy by webaplanet(op): 3:22pm On Nov 03, 2012
Pakistani parents in a remote village allegedly killed their 15-year-old daughter by pouring acid all over her face and body after they caught her talking to an unknown boy, according to local police and hospital officials.

The incident happened in Kotli, a small town in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The parents allegedly confessed to the attack after she spoke with a boy outside their house.

According to local police, the girl's father, Mohammed Zafar, became enraged when he found his teenage daughter, Anvu Shah, with the boy outside their home.

In many rural areas of Pakistan, deeply conservative social traditions forbid girls to speak or be seen with boys who are not related by blood.

"Zafar beat her up and then poured acid over her with the help of his wife," Tahir Ayub, a police officer, told Agence France Presse.

"She was badly burnt, but they did not take her to hospital until the next morning, and she died on Wednesday," he said.

Local media reports, citing hospital officials, say her death was slow and excruciatingly painful. The girl was brought to hospital with third degree burns all over her body, including her face, arms, and chest. Police were reportedly alerted to the attack by one of Shah's female relatives.

Her parents have now been charged with murder.

CrimeSpanish Man Dies After Being In Coma For 23 Years by webaplanet(op): 10:16pm On Oct 30, 2012
Spanish man dies after being in coma for 23 years

A Spanish man in a coma for 23 years, has died, just over a year after his family finally won compensation following decades of litigation over the operation that left him in a vegetative state.

In 2009 Mr Meno's family began to camp outside the ministry in protest when the legal authorities threatened to seize their apartment to pay court costs

Antonio Meno had been in a vegetative state since cosmetic surgery on his nose in 1989 when he was 21.

"He died on Sunday," Luis Bertelli, one of the family's lawyers, told the AFP news agency.

The family charged that the anaesthetist at the operation had been negligent and he was found guilty of "imprudence" by a Madrid court. But the finding was overturned on appeal and the anaesthetist was cleared in all the subsequent legal proceedings brought by the young man's parents, who are retired bakers.

In 2009 they began to camp outside the ministry in protest when the legal authorities threatened to seize their apartment to pay off 400,000 euros ($518,000) in court costs.

But evidence from a new witness, who was a medical student at the time and present at the operation, persuaded the country's Supreme Court to reopen the case in November 2010.

A process of arbitration between the two parties finally allowed the family to receive 1.075 million euros ($1.394 million) in compensation in July 2011.
Meno's mother Juan Ortega said then that it "doesn't end as I wanted, but I have no strength left, I can't go on."

On Tuesday, Bertelli said: "It is the victim of an injustice who has died," accusing the courts of having taken too long to hand out justice.

"It is many years of waiting and anguish for a mother," he said. She had lived "permanently attached to the foot of a bed because she was not given the compensation which would have allowed her to employ nurses."

Christianity EtcChristians Persecuted Throughout The World by webaplanet(op): 9:41pm On Oct 30, 2012
Christians persecuted throughout the world

The latest bombing in Nigeria shows how Christians are increasingly suffering for their faith – and how their plight is being ignored

Only two days ago, a suicide bomber crashed a jeep laden with explosives into a packed Catholic church in Kaduna, northern Nigeria, killing at least eight people and injuring more than 100

Imagine the unspeakable fury that would erupt across the Islamic world if a Christian-led government in Khartoum had been responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Sudanese Muslims over the past 30 years. Or if Christian gunmen were firebombing mosques in Iraq during Friday prayers. Or if Muslim girls in Indonesia had been abducted and beheaded on their way to school, because of their faith.

Such horrors are barely thinkable, of course. But they have all occurred in reverse, with Christians falling victim to Islamist aggression. Only two days ago, a suicide bomber crashed a jeep laden with explosives into a packed Catholic church in Kaduna, northern Nigeria, killing at least eight people and injuring more than 100. The tragedy bore the imprint of numerous similar attacks by Boko Haram (which roughly translates as “Western education is sinful”), an exceptionally bloodthirsty militant group.

Other notable trouble spots include Egypt, where 600,000 Copts – more than the entire population of Manchester – have emigrated since the 1980s in the face of harassment or outright oppression.

Why is such a huge scourge chronically under-reported in the West? One result of this oversight is that the often inflated sense of victimhood felt by many Muslims has festered unchallenged. Take the fallout of last month’s protests around the world against the American film about the Prophet Mohammed. While most of the debate centred on the rule of law and the limits of free speech, almost nothing was said about how much more routinely Islamists insult Christians, almost always getting away with their provocations scot-free.

Innocence of Muslims, the production that spurred all the outrage, has been rightly dismissed as contemptible trash. What, though, of a website such as “Guardians of the Faith”, run by Salafist extremists in Cairo? Among many posts, it has carried an article entitled “Why Muslims are superior to Copts”. “Being a Muslim girl whose role models are the wives of the Prophet, who were required to wear the hijab, is better than being a Christian girl, whose role models are whores,” it declares. “Being a Muslim who fights to defend his honour and his faith is better than being a Christian who steals, rapes, and kills children.” Hateful messages breed hateful acts. Is it any surprise that mobs have set fire to one church after another across Egypt in recent years?

The deeper truth masked by all the ranting – and, it should be added, by the blinkers of many Western secularists – is that Christians are targeted in greater numbers than any other faith group on earth. About 200 million church members (10 per cent of the global total) face discrimination or persecution: it just isn’t fashionable to say so. In 2010, I set out to write a chronicle of anti-Christian persecution on several continents. Published in my book, Christianophobia, the results of my research are even more disquieting than I expected.

Abu Hamza, the 7/7 ringleader Mohammad Sidique Khan and other totemic figures were allowed to practise their religion openly in Britain, yet there is scarcely a single country from Morocco to Pakistan in which Christians are fully free to worship without restriction. Muslims who convert to Christianity or other faiths in most of these societies face harsh penalties. There is now a high risk that the Churches will all but vanish from their biblical heartlands in the Middle East.

The suffering is no less acute elsewhere. Before East Timor gained independence from Indonesia, 100,000 Catholic non-combatants were killed by agents of the Suharto government between the 1970s and the 1990s. And a few months ago, the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah, officially announced that “it is necessary to destroy all the churches” on the Arabian Peninsula.

One reason why Western audiences hear so little about faith-based victimisation in the Muslim world is straightforward: young Christians in Europe and America do not become “radicalised”, and persecuted Christians tend not to respond with terrorist violence. This forbearance should of course be a source of pride in many respects, and would be an unqualified good if properly acknowledged. But it counts for much less in a climate where most of what is considered newsworthy has to involve tub-thumping or outright violence.

The problems faced by Christians are not by any means restricted to the Muslim world. Take India, where minorities – Muslims included – are menaced by Hindu extremists who consider the monotheistic traditions to be unwelcome imports, and resent Christian opposition to the caste system.

Between August and October of 2008, Hindu hardliners in the eastern state of Orissa murdered at least 90 people, displaced 50,000, and attacked 170 churches and chapels. This disaster was not unexceptional. The past four years have seen scores of assaults on churches and congregations in other parts of the country.

Elsewhere, the culprits include not only Communists, but also Buddhist nationalists in countries such as Burma and Sri Lanka. The scale of Communist intolerance is a matter of record. Curbs on freedom of worship in countries including China, Vietnam and Cuba are draconian and sometimes exceptionally sadistic.

Why does all this matter? One obvious answer is that faith isn’t going to go away. Whatever one’s view of the coherence of religious belief, it has become clear that secularisation has gone into reverse, partly through the spread of democracy. Three quarters of humanity now profess a religious creed; this figure is predicted to reach 80 per cent by mid-century.

The prospect should not surprise us. Atheism feeds off bad religion, especially fundamentalism, whose easily disposable, dogmatic certainties now form one of atheism’s main assets. On the other hand, it is much harder for non-belief to replace the imaginative richness of a mature religious commitment, and the corresponding assurance that life is worth living responsibly, because it has ultimate meaning.

But faith is like fire, to cite an analogy used by the Chief Rabbi, Jonathan Sacks. It warms; but it can also burn. Along or near the 10th parallel north of the equator, between Nigeria and Indonesia and the Philippines, religious fervour and political unrest are reinforcing each other. This point should be granted even if one accepts religion’s status as an immense – perhaps the preeminent – source of social capital in existence.

On the positive side, faith-based conviction has mobilised millions to oppose authoritarian regimes, inaugurate democratic transitions, support human rights and relieve human suffering. In the 20th century, religious movements helped end colonial rule and usher in democracy in Latin America, Eastern Europe, sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.

The challenge, then, at once simple and substantial, is to promote the peaceful messages at the heart of the world’s major faiths, while neutralising perversions of the core teachings.

Nothing I have said should be interpreted as encouraging a holier-than-thou attitude among Christians. Large parts of the Christian world were saturated with unsurpassed violence 70 or 100 years ago; and a British man, Thomas Aikenhead, was executed for blasphemy as recently as the turn of the 18th century. Innocence of Muslims was produced by a convicted criminal with a Coptic background.

Exceptions aside, however, Christians generally have become more tolerant and self-critical over the past half-century, reminting crucial aspects of Jesus’s message in the process. (For instance, it is worth noting that Pope John Paul II and the leaders of almost all other major Churches were vehemently opposed to the Iraq war.)

Given Christianity’s evolution, there are grounds for thinking that Islam may change, too. Points of contact between the two traditions are at least as significant as the differences. When they are true to their guiding principles, both faiths insist on the sanctity of the person as a seeker of God. From this should follow a recognition of religious liberty as the first of human rights. Self-interest need not be erased from an apparently high-minded equation. Freedom of belief is the canary in the coalmine for liberty in general, and thus for the flourishing of a society.

It is vital to pursue these medium- and longer-term ambitions. They are critical to world peace. But promoting inter-faith ties should not displace attempts to tell the truth about the current plight of Christians – and to take action against a major injustice.

FamilyBoy, 15, Who Impregnated 10-year-old Colombian Girl by webaplanet(op): 7:03pm On Oct 29, 2012
Tribal law protects boy, 15, who impregnated 10-year-old Colombian girl from under-age sex charges

Young mother gave birth to daughter two weeks ago

She is in Wayuu tribe which has own justice system

They refuse to help in under-age sex investigation

By Simon Tomlinson

Colombian authorities have been frustrated in their attempts to file criminal charges against the young father of a baby born to a 10-year-old ethnic Wayuu girl.

The Wayuu people have their own justice system and rarely co-operate with agents of the Colombian state in such matters, Maria Gladys Pabon, chief prosecutor in Riohacha, the regional capital, said yesterday.

Under Colombian law, any sexual relations with a child age 14 or younger is a crime punishable by at least nine years in prison.

Frustrated: The Colombian authorities say they are not getting any co-operation from members of the Wayuu tribe as they investigate the young father of this baby born to a 10-year-old girl

Mother: The girl, a member of the northern indigenous Wayuu tribe in the La Guajira Peninsula, was 39 weeks pregnant when she underwent a Caesarean
But legal and indigenous affairs experts say that under Colombia’s 1991 constitution the Wayuu have jurisdiction.

The girl, who cannot be identified by law, gave birth on March 29 via Caesarean section and is one of the youngest mothers on record.

The father, who authorities say is 15, also cannot be identified.

The baby weighed 5.6lbs (2.6kg) and measured 14.5ins (47cm), said Dr Fabio Gonzalez, who delivered the child in a private clinic in Riohacha, on the Guajira peninsula in Colombia’s northeast coast.

Dr Gonzalez said ‘she barely understood what was happening’ at the moment of birth.

He added he had to operate because at that age the pelvis is still growing ‘and it’s too small for the fetus to pass through the vaginal canal.’

Home: The town of Manaure is in the northern La Guajira Peninsula of Colombia
He said the mother, who was discharged from the clinic in good health, is also relatively short at 4ft, 7ins (142cm).

When nurses took the newborn to her mother ‘it was as if a doll was being given to her,’ said Dr Gonzalez.

‘She has no idea. She doesn’t understand anything and that’s normal,’ he added.

The doctor said it was not the first time he had delivered the baby of a 10-year-old girl. He said he had a similar case last year.

In the latest case, the girl’s parents took her to the clinic from their hometown of Manuare.

Shame: The birth has been painful for the Wayuu (file picture), who mostly live on the Colombia-Venezuela border. But they do not believe she was raped
A Wayuu tribal leader, Rosa Iguaran, said the parents were refusing to speak to the media out of shame.

She said the incident was also painful for the Wayuu, who number about 350,000 and mostly live in the Colombia-Venezuela border region.

They don’t consider that the girl was raped but rather that the baby was conceived in consensual sex.

It will be up to the parents of both the boy and girl to decide whether the two should be married and what the boy’s family owes the girl’s family, whether it be ‘necklaces, cows, goats, whatever the family agrees on,’ said Iguaran.

Pabon, the prosecutor, said the family of the girl has refused to co-operate with her in her investigation.

She said she would not seek to arrest the father of the newborn without speaking with Wayuu leaders.

Colombian constitutional law experts say such cases are always very complicated.

Former Constitutional Court magistrate Rodrigo Escobar said that ‘what the Indians can’t do is submit a defendant to degrading treatment or the death penalty.’

The world’s youngest mother in a medically documented case was Lina Medina of Peru, who in 1939 produced an infant at the age of five years, eight months, according to the Guinness Book of Records.

A prized goat has been put up for sale in India with a whopping £128,000 price tag.

Islam Bhati, 37, from Rajasthan in India, is trying to sell his finest goat for 11 million rupees to a Muslim family celebrating the Eid al-Adha festival.

The two-year-old animal is organic and has the word 'Allah' in Arabic emblazoned on one side of his fur. He also has a crescent and star on the other side.

Mr Bhati said: ‘It’s a miracle animal and I feel blessed to own him. We have looked after this goat like our child and he’s the best goat around. We can easily charge 11 million for such a divine animal, it's pretty reasonable.’

Mr Bhati, who run's the family's marble business, bought the goat from a nearby farm two years' ago.
He said: ‘I noticed the inscriptions soon after I bought him. I knew it was sacred. Since we took him into our home we have cared for him and fed him pulses, fresh tree leaves and dry fruit. His meat will be very good.’

Mr Bhati has been offered huge sums for the goat since he posted an advert on the

Mr Bhati said: ‘The most I’ve been offered so far is 2.5 million rupees (£30,000) but I refused. If anything this goat is a priceless animal. I will only sell it for the asking price. And when I sell it, I’ll give 50 per cent of the money to a local orphanage. We’ll miss him when he’s gone but there cannot be a better occasion to sell him.’

I am getting tired of politics - OBJ •Says PDP lacks discipline

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday, stated that he might not be actively involved in politics any longer, saying “If I am not told, I know that I’m getting older.”

Obasanjo, the immediate past chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), who made the declaration in Ibadan on Saturday while speaking at the first full South-West caucus meeting of the party, also attributed the downward trend in the fortunes of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to what he described as lack of sufficient discipline, just as he said the activities of the party in the last 14 years should be subjected to a review.

Speaking earlier in his welcome address, the PDP National Vice Chairman, South-West, Chief Segun Oni, said the essence of the meeting was to widen the consultation and participation base of the party to ensure that PDP in the zone became an all-inclusive party in line with its Reconciliation, Reformation and Rebuilding (3Rs) agenda of the Alhaji Bamanga Tukur leadership.

Oni, who said that the challenge before the party in the zone was to strengthen itself to meet the yearnings of the people for a change, asserted that “our people in the South-West have tested alternatives and are unhappy with the performance of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in all the five states remaining.”

Alluding to the failure of the party in the recent Ondo State governorship election, the former president said PDP was not disgraced in the election, adding that the party was rather successful in view of the plan by the opposition.

Stating that one cannot win always, Obasanjo said: “We cannot win always. We have voted in Ondo and the first important lesson we learnt from the exercise is that we must learn from our collective mistakes. We must do a post-mortem to know where our strength and our failure lie for the sake of the future. There is no perfect election, but since what happened in Ondo State cannot be changed, we must accept the outcome of the election,” he said.

On the issue of discipline, the former president said the idea of seeking for reconciliation after grave destruction was not acceptable, adding that “there must be discipline in this party. In any human organisation or association, there must be discipline.

“PDP needed to be reviewed as a way forward. Both at the national, zonal and state levels, we should look at what we have done in the last 13 years or thereabout. Where are we coming from? Where are we and where are we going and who knows the road?”

He said discipline in the party hierarchy must start at the local level and not Abuja, urging all members to work collectively to ensure the correction of noticeable anomaly in the party.

Clearing the air on the speculation that he was dumping PDP for another party, Obasanjo said it was not true that he was leaving, declaring that the party took him to all political attainments.

“I still remain a PDP member but based on principle and morality. If and when we decide to rubbish principle and morality, I’ll decide to stand alone. We should not be found in a place where there is no principle, moral and spirit of service,” he said.

In that wise, he advised that estranged members of the party should be invited back into the fold, but cautioned that such people must be thoroughly screened as, according to him, some had gone to the extreme to damage and spoil the image of the party.

He also charged all party leaders across the zone to be more alive to their responsibilities in ensuring the sustenance and success of the party, charging the PDP leaders to work actively for the restructuring of the party.

“Nobody can do anything or attain any level purely on his/her own. When the dust is finally settled, there will be re-appraisal and re-assessment. Some people have to be there and you happened to be one of those people to be there but remember the home front,” he said.

PoliticsUduaghan’s Aide Raped, Matcheted by webaplanet(op): 9:06am On Oct 28, 2012
A female top government functionary (names withheld) in Delta State had a close shave with death when she was attacked at her residence in DDPA area of Asaba, the state capital. The government’s appointee was allegedly raped, battered and tortured into coma by a man believed to be her former driver and two other accomplices.

The suspects are now in police custody. Public Relations Officer of the state’s police command, DSP Charles Muka, told Sunday Sun on phone that he was yet to be briefed on the incident. When our correspondent visited the victim’s three-bedroom apartment, the place had been deserted. But a close source said she was still recuperating in an undisclosed hospital. According to sources, on the fateful day, the victim’s driver had reported for duty as usual.

He was soon joined by his predecessor, who had earlier been “sacked by the madam”. “Nobody suspected anything was going on inside the house because of the high fence. But at about 10 p.m., the two drivers drove out of the compound in the madam’s jeep with 50 litres of fuel and never came back.” Having regained concsiousness at about 4 a.m. she struggled and managed to get to her neighbour’s gate to seek assistance. “When she knocked at the gate, I peeped through a small hole and found she was the one, I opened the gate and discovered she had matchet cuts all over her body.

It was at that point we raised an alarm and rushed her to hospital,” our source added. According to the source, there were blood stains on the walls in the victim’s apartment, adding that the blood on the floor had congealed. The source added: They broke her head, raped her and mutilated her body. The plot was to kill her, but God’s intervention saved her.”

However, following the incident, security operatives trailed the suspects to Abakiliki where they had gone to dispose of the vehicle and were subsequently arrested. A neighbour in the area told Sunday Sun that the attackers might have carried out the dastardly act as their own pound of flesh, describing the victim as too hostile to her domestic staff.

“Nobody stays here with her. She lives alone. Whenever the driver comes to pick her, he is not allowed to go into the house. He always hangs around the gate. Sometimes, he would sit on that stone and doze off. Her house girl too had to run away because of the way madam mal-treated her. There was a day she poured hot water on the girl because of early morning tea,” said a neighbour who pleaded anonymity.

Palestinian man killed by panicking cow
Updated: 04:56, Sunday October 28, 2012
A panicking cow has killed a Palestinian man trying to slaughter the beast during the Muslim celebration of Eid al-Adha, a Gaza health official says.

Muslims around the world slaughter sheep, cows and goats during the four-day holiday that began on Friday to commemorate the sacrifice by their forefather Abraham.

But accidents are common as people frequently buy animals to slaughter at home instead of relying on professional butchers.

Official Ashraf al-Kidra said on Saturday 150 other people were hospitalised in the Gaza Strip with knife wounds or other injuries caused by animals trying to break away.

Impoverished families scrimp all year to pay for part of a sheep or cow for the holiday.

Many also distribute the meat to even poorer families, giving the celebration a sense of communal solidarity.

Van Stolen with 12 Coffins, 12 Bodies Inside

October 27, 2012 admin Uncategorized Stories No comments

German thieves picked up more than they bargained for in a heist just outside Berlin Sunday night when they stole three vans — one of which was loaded with 12 coffins, complete with corpses.

The cargo, en route to a crematorium in Meissen, Saxony, disappeared from an industrial parking lot while the van’s driver was inside washing his hands, reported the German news website The Local.

“The driver did everything right,” a company spokesman told German newspaper Die Welt, adding that he had even locked the van before walking away.

“We have not found the bodies yet,” police spokesman Peter Salender told NBC News.

He added that one of the other vans had been recovered in Poland. A spokesman for the Frankfurt am Oder state prosecutor’s office said the case fit the profile of a string of recent van thefts and that the vehicles were probably destined for eastern Europe, reported the French newspaper Le Figaro (link in French).

“The perpetrators were probably not intending to steal 12 bodies,” another spokesman for the prosecutor’s office said.

The identity of one of the bodies was revealed Thursday when German newspaper Bild ran the headline “Car Thieves Stole My Mother’s Body,” NBC News reported.

CelebritiesBritish Phd Student Helps Catch One-ton Crocodile by webaplanet(op): 2:19am On Oct 26, 2012
British PhD student helps catch one-ton crocodile bigger than a CAR

Luke Evans was member of team which hauled in 5.2-metre reptile

Crocodile was fitted tag before being released back into the wild

Scientists will monitor crocodile's movements in Malaysian Borneo

Experts believe it is the largest tagged crocodile in the world

Anyone who studies for a PhD can expect it to involve a lot of hard work.

But few students can claim to have completed an assignment as tough as this - catching a crocodile bigger than a car.

Luke Evans, of Penwith, Cornwall, was part of a 12-man team which caught the animal - the largest crocodile ever to be tagged and released back into the wild.

The crocodile, called Siganas, is 5.2m long, weighs more than a ton and was caught in Kinabatangan, near the Sabah region of Malaysian Borneo.

Mr Evans, 24, travelled to the country to study saltwater crocodiles and to trap and tag them with sat-nav technology so that scientists can follow their movements.

The scheme is a joint project involving three organisations - the State Wildlife department, the Danau Girang Field Centre (DGFC) and Chester Zoo.

Mr Evans and fellow volunteers dragged the male crocodile to shore and held it down while it was tagged. The animal was then released.

Experts believe Siganas is the largest tagged crocodile in the world.

Twelve volunteers were involved in the operation to haul the crocodile ashore for tagging

The crocodile, called Signas, is 5.2m long, weighs more than a ton and was caught in the Kinabatangan River, near the Sabah region of Malaysian Borneo
Two other crocodiles have been tagged as part of the project - in June last year and in January - but they were smaller and scientists were only able to monitor them for about two months each.

Mr Evans said: 'When we first saw the crocodile, it was in a trap and it was clear to me that it was going to measure more than five metres.

'The feeling was pure excitement. These are the kind of days that make me love my PhD.

'It's the third crocodile we have tagged in the Kinabatangan River in Sabah and this one was considerably larger than the other two.

'It eclipses the previous record of 4.65 metres, carried out in Australia.

'We hope that by mapping the reptile's nesting locations, it will show us how habitats decline and how human intervention is affecting the reptile's behaviour.'

Teamwork: The scheme is a joint project involving three organisations - the State Wildlife department, the Danau Girang Field Centre (DGFC) and Chester Zoo

Two other crocodiles have been tagged as part of the project - in June last year and in January - but they were smaller and scientists were only able to monitor them for about two months each

'It was teamwork and we enjoyed the challenge.'

Datuk Dr Laurentius Ambu, State Wildlife director, said: 'We were a bit unlucky with the two previous males tagged in June last year, and January, with the tags lasting for only two months.

'Hopefully, this tag will last longer and will provide important data on the crocodile's movements and home ranges.'

DGFC director Dr Benoit Goosens said there were plans to tag several more crocodiles.

He said: 'In three days, Siganas had already travelled 5km and moved away from DGFC. It seems to be a transient reptile, rather than a resident.'

A director of the Danau Girang Field Centre said there were plans to tag several more crocodiles

Research: Scientists hope that, by mapping the reptile's nesting locations, they will learn how habitats decline

Want to guess someone's password? Try password, researchers have claimed.

An annual study of the most commonly used passwords has found that password, 123456 and 12345678 are still the most commonly used passwords - despite years of security experts urging people to change them to more secure versions.
'Just in time for Halloween comes something that might scare anyone who spends a lot of time online: SplashData's annual list of the most common passwords used on the Internet and posted by hackers,' the researchers said.

The most common passwords have been revealed - with password topping the list

However, some people have updated their passwords, and the research found new entries to this year's list include 'welcome', 'jesus' 'ninja,'mustang' and 'password1.'
The firm behind the study, Splashdata, warned users to change their password.

'At this time of year, people enjoy focusing on scary costumes, movies and decorations, but those who have been through it can tell you how terrifying it is to have your identity stolen because of a hacked password,' said Morgan Slain, SplashData CEO.

'We're hoping that with more publicity about how risky it is to use weak passwords, more people will start taking simple steps to protect themselves by using stronger passwords and using different passwords for different websites.'
SplashData’s top 25 list was compiled from files containing millions of stolen passwords posted online by hackers.
The company advises consumers or businesses using any of the passwords on the list to change them immediately.
'Even though each year hacking tools get more sophisticated, thieves still tend to prefer easy targets,' Slain said.
'Just a little bit more effort in choosing better passwords will go a long way toward making you safer online.'
CHOOSING A SAFE PASSWORD
SplashData suggests making passwords more secure with these tips:

Use passwords of eight characters or more with mixed types of characters.

For example, 'eat cake at 8!' or 'car_park_city?'

Avoid using the same username/password combination for multiple websites.

Especially risky is using the same password for entertainment sites that you do for online email, social networking, and financial services.

This bizarre range of shoes may make the owner feel like they have one foot in the grave.
Crafted from dead animals, Iris Schieferstein's outlandish designs fetch up to £3,900 and have proved a hit with extreme dressers such as Lady Gaga.
Some of the most controversial pieces include a pair of sandals sporting stuffed doves with their wings spread wide and a collection of heels fashioned from hollow horse hooves.

Sculptor and artist Iris Schieferstein has been using dead animals for her works.

Some of Iris Schieferstein's most controversial designs include a pair of sandals sporting stuffed doves
The 45-year-old designer, from Berlin, Germany, collects carcasses from her local butcher which are discarded after the meat is used for sausages.
She spends a week stripping out any remaining meat and bones from the animal's feet and the skin is sent to a tanner to be treated for preservation.

The sculptor then sets the skin - complete with fur still in place - around a shoe model before hand-stitching insoles and lining.
She said: 'Creating the shoes is ugly work, taking the meat out is not nice, like any taxidermy.
'When I began working with dead animals I would pick them up from the street.
'But they are protected by the government in Germany, and so after ten years they tried to put me in prison. Now I use my butcher.'
The horse boots feature horse fur, a zip up the front, an intact hoof and horse bone as a heel.

Iris creates the quirky designs in her studio in Leuenberg, Germany

While a pair of snakeskin stilettos feature a replica pistol as a heel with the reptile seemingly eating its own tail.
Describing her inspiration Ms Schieferstein added: 'I love horses and I love shoes so I thought this would be perfect.
'Horses have a beautiful walk and I wanted to recreate that with my footwear.'
The footwear has been displayed at numerous exhibitions around the world and have even inspired a range from Dolce & Gabanna.
Despite the high price tag the footwear can only be worn for several hours at a time before becoming too uncomfortable.
Ms Schieferstein said: 'As yet no company has been willing to produce them for the high street.'
Last year the artist made a pair of custom-fit shoes for Lady Gaga.

A pub league football referee was bludgeoned to death after he ruled a goal was offside during a friendly match in Zimbabwe.
Isaac Mbofana, 34, died on the spot after a fan battered him around the head with a log during the heated game last week.

The country’s Chronicle newspaper reported that Mr Mbofana had been running the line as an assistant referee when he ruled a goal was disallowed during the social match on a primary school playing field.

Off the ball: Assistant referee Isaac Mbofana, 34, died after a fan battered him around the head with a log during a heated amateur football game in the village of Takawira in central Zimbabwe last week

Police said a group of local fans reacted angrily to the decision, with one allegedly picking up part of a tree trunk and attacking the linesman by the pitch side.

Spokeswoman Thandiwe Khumalo confirmed officers had launched a murder probe following the incident, which happened last Thursday in the central village of Takawira.

She said: 'It is alleged that on the said date there was a soccer tournament at Jomboringo Primary School.

'The teams clashed at about 3pm and the now deceased Mbofana was an assistant referee in that match.'

The Chronicle reported that officers have named a local man Onismo Sichani, 31, as the main suspect in the murder.

The government-controlled publication reported: 'Sgt Khumalo said during the course of the game, Sichani’s team scored a goal and Mbofana disallowed the goal arguing that it had been scored from an offside position.

'She said the ruling did not go down well with Sichani who then confronted Mbofana.'

'Sichani’s team scored a goal and Mbofana disallowed the goal arguing that it had been scored from an offside position. The ruling did not go down well with Sichani who then confronted Mbofana'
The officer confirmed detectives were hunting Sichani, who allegedly fled following the bloody attack.

She said: 'A misunderstanding ensued between the two resulting in Sichani picking up a log, which he used to strike Mbofana once on the head.

'Mbofana fell down and died instantly. After realising that Mbofana was dead, Sichani fled from the scene.

'The matter was reported to the police who attended the scene and the body of the deceased was taken to Gokwe South District Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.'

Sergeant Khumalo urged members of the local community to come forward if they had information on the suspect’s whereabouts.

She added: 'Police are appealing to members of the public with information, which might lead to the arrest of Onismo Sichani to contact their nearest police station or use our suggestion boxes.'

The officer, who is acting spokesperson for Zimbabwe’s Midlands force, said people should not resort to violence during disputes.

She said: 'We urge members of the public to always seek assistance from third parties in settling disputes to avoid such incidences.'

CrimeMan Gets 14 Days Jail For Beating His Wife by webaplanet(op): 9:33pm On Oct 23, 2012
Lagos – An Agege Customary Court on Tuesday sentenced a 39-year-old man to 14 days imprisonment for contempt, following his disobedience to the court order to maintain the peace with his estrange wife.

“The court hereby sentences you, Ibukun Oluwadamilare, to 14 days imprisonment for contempt of court for beating up your wife.

“I believe that if you get there, you will learn one or two lessons and you will control your temper thereafter,’’ the Court President, Mr Emmanuel Sokunle, said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the court, had at the last hearing, ordered the couple in the divorce suit to maintain the peace.

However, the wife, the petitioner in the suit, informed the court a day later that the respondent beat her, in spite of the order.

The petitioner, Adesewa, 33, had filed the suit in September, asking the court to dissolve her 12-year-old marriage to Oluwadamilare over battering and threat to life.

Adesewa, who lives at No. 18b, Kayode Joseph St., Powerline, Oke- Ira, Ogba, told the court: “My husband had wanted to make love to me in the presence of our children but I refused.

“He then beat me mercilessly to the extent of removing one of my teeth. If my husband has money, he won’t give me and the children.

“He prefers to go to the club and declare surplus and when the money is finished, he comes home to steal my money,” she alleged.

The mother of three children, aged between five and 10 years, also added that her husband often malign her before their children by making unsubstantiated allegation that she was promiscuous.

“We live in one room but my husband won’t wait till midnight when our children will be asleep before drawing my pants.

“My husband started going to a white garment church in April, and so, brings home different colours of candle.

“He left the church we were both going because he accused me of going out with our pastor and I am fed up with all of his behaviour,” she said.

Adesewa told the court that she wanted the marriage to be dissolved and also wanted the custody of the children.

In his testimony, the estranged husband denied some of the allegations.

“My wife flirts with different men. She even goes to the extent of sending money and recharge cards to them from my money.

“I traced her to where she was going one day and saw her entering a hotel but she had told me that she was attending a night vigil in church,’’ he said.

Ibukun also told the court that if his wife was ready to reconcile with him, she had to be three months pregnant for him.

“I told her in April that I still want a fourth child and she denied me access to herself. I am ready to take her back if she agrees to my terms,” he said. (NAN)

CrimeTwo Teenaged Girls Were Drugged By Their Father Each Time He Molested Them by webaplanet(op): 9:26pm On Oct 23, 2012
For months, two teenaged girls were allegedly drugged by their father each time he raped them as their mother held their arms to prevent any struggle.

The sisters’ ordeal only ended when the father allegedly raped a third victim—a classmate of one of his daughters—who was able to escape and report the abuses to the police.

The blood-curdling picture of parenting warped by drugs and diabolic lust emerged with the father’s arrest on Thursday in Quezon City.

Supt. Crisostomo Mendoza of the Novaliches police substation said the sisters, aged 14 and 16, were allegedly forced by their 33-year-old father to take “shabu” before they were raped.

The suspect’s 35-year-old live-in partner, the girls’ mother, allegedly helped her man perpetrate the crime by firmly holding the girls in place as they were being ravished.

Mendoza said the father had been subjected to inquest proceedings for rape as of Saturday, with no bail recommended. The mother, who also faces charges, remained at large.

The alleged rapes began last year, Mendoza said.

Before dawn on Thursday, a 15-year-old classmate of one of the girls went to the latter’s house in Barangay Nagkaisang Nayon and also fell prey to the suspect.

Based on the third victim’s account, she and the two daughters were allegedly drugged by the suspect that day, at around 1 a.m., and then were all raped.

Court case: Businessman Innocente Marcolini developed a brain tumour after 12 years of using a mobile phone six hours a day

A court has ruled that mobile phones can give you cancer in a landmark case that could open the gates for other victims to take legal action.

Businessman Innocente Marcolini, 60, was diagnosed with a brain tumour after using his mobile phone at work for up to six hours a day for 12 years.

Italy's Supreme Court found that there was a 'causal link' between his phone use and his illness.

Experts now predict a barrage of legal claims by victims who believe their own illness was caused by their use of mobile phones.

Mr Marcolini told The Sun newspaper: 'This is significant for very many people. I wanted this problem to become public because many people still do not know the risks.

'I was on the phone, usually the mobile, for at least five or six hours every day at work. I wanted it recognised that there was a link between my illness and the use of mobile and cordless phones.

'Parents need to know their children are at risk of this illness.'

Oncologist and professor of environmental mutagenesis Angelo Gino Levis and neurosurgeon Dr Giuseppe Grasso gave evidence supporting Mr Marcolini's claim.

They argued that mobile and cordless phones emit electromagnetic radiation causing damage to cells and increasing the risk of tumours. But they added that many tumours don't appear for 15 years making short-term studies on mobile phone use redundant.

The jury is still out, however, for many scientists who claim it is still unknown what, if any, link there is between mobiles and brain tumours.

Landmark ruling: Italy's Supreme Court in Rome found there was a 'causal link' between Mr Marcolini's phone use and his brain tumour - opening the doors for other legal claims

Earlier on this month, a Danish study on more than 358,000 mobile users over 18-years-old found that those who used mobile phones for 10 years or more were no more at risk than those who never used them.

Researchers led by the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology in Copenhagen found cancer rates in the central nervous system were almost the same in both long-term mobile phone users and non-users.
But other scientists disagreed, saying the Danish study excluded business users and included as non-users people who began using mobiles later on.

The big debate: The jury is still out for many scientists who argue there is no evidence to support a link between cancer and mobile phone use

Denis Henshaw, Emeritus Professor of Human Radiation Effects, Bristol University said the study was 'worthless', and the researchers themselves admitted non-users may have been misclassified which would bias the findings.

He said: 'This seriously flawed study misleads the public and decision makers about the safety of mobile phone use.'

Professor Henshaw has previously advocated cigarette-style warnings on mobile phone packets and urges more independent research

He said: 'Vast numbers of people are using mobile phones and they could be a time bomb of health problems - not just brain tumours, but also fertility, which would be a serious public health issue..

'The health effects of smoking alcohol and air pollution are well known and well talked about, and it's entirely reasonable we should be openly discussing the evidence for this, but it is not happening.

'We want to close the door before the horse has bolted.'

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) rang alarm bells last year when it classified mobile phones as 'possibly carginogenic'.

In April, The Children with Cancer conference highlighted figures published by the Office of National Statistics, which showed a 50 per cent increase in frontal and temporal lobe tumours between 1999 and 2009.

The ONS figures showed that the incident rate has risen from two to three per 100,000 people since 1999, while figures from Bordeaux Segalen University showed a one to two per cent annual increase in brain cancers in children.

But earlier this year another study by Manchester University researchers found no statistically significant change in rates of newly diagnosed brain cancers in England between 1998 and 2007 - saying it was unlikely 'we are on the forefront of a brain cancer epidemic'.

FoodEnugu Poisoned Meat: 6 Dead, 60 Hospitalized by webaplanet(op): 8:50am On Oct 21, 2012
From KASSIDY UCHENDU, Nsukka

No fewer than six people have been reported dead and over 60 hospitalized in Amegu village, Ede-Oballa in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State following an alleged poisoning of pork meat they took at a funeral ceremony.

According to reports from Ede-Oballa, more than 60 guests developed severe stomach problems after the funereal ceremony, prompting their immediate hospitalization. Investigation by Sunday Sun showed that all the popular hospitals in the university town of Nsukka including the Catholic Mission- owned Bishop Shanahan have been flooded with the victims who were said to be in critical conditions. A woman was said to be the first casualty of the meat poisoning followed by three girls while it was feared that two others who are not natives of the community also died.

It was gathered that a pig farmer who sold the infected animal to a woman (name withheld) who hosted the funeral, was in police net. Hospital sources expressed apprehension over the survival of the victims, saying they ought to have been rushed to the hospital same night. “In a situation like this, victims should be rushed to the hospital promptly for early stomach wash”, said a hospital source. The source however said frantic efforts are being made to save the lives of the victims Another reliable source suspected that guests at the funeral might have been served the meat of a dead pig injected by a veterinary doctor.

The source said the owner of the pig (name withheld) had lied to the woman that the pig fell into a ditch. Apparently due to the intimidating size of the pig and its relative cheapness, the woman quickly entered a bargain and bought the meat not knowing it was sick and had been treated recently by a veterinary doctor who also advised that in the event of its death, the animal should be buried. A source quoted the doctor who has been quizzed by the police as saying that he advised the pig farmer to bury the animal if it died within three weeks of the injection.

The tragic incident has caused tension in Nsukka zone where pigs are used at funeral ceremonies as an imperative and status symbol. It was gathered that since the incident, guests at burial ceremonies in the area have been avoiding pork. This has created problems for pig farmers who have lost patronage due to the tragedy.

Our reporter could not reach the veterinary doctor at the time of filing this report. A senior police officer attached to the Nsukka Urban Police Command said that some of the guests and the pig farmer were helping the police in their investigation.

IslamAfghan Girl 'beheaded For Refusing Prostitution' by webaplanet(op): 8:17am On Oct 21, 2012
HERAT, Afghanistan: Afghan police have arrested four people who allegedly tried to force a woman into prostitution in western Afghanistan and beheaded her when she refused, officials said Wednesday.

Mah Gul, 20, was beheaded after her mother-in-law attempted to make her sleep with a man in her house in Herat province last week, provincial police chief Abdul Ghafar Sayedzada told AFP.

"We have arrested her mother-in-law, father-in-law, her husband and the man who killed her," he said.

Gul was married to her husband four months ago and her mother-in-law had tried to force her into prostitution several times in the past, Sayedzada said.

The suspect, Najibullah, was paraded by police at a press conference where he said the mother-in-law lured him into killing Gul by telling him that she was a prostitute.

"It was around 2:00 am when Gul's husband left for his bakery. I came down and with the help of her mother-in-law killed her with a knife," he said.

The murder comes against a backdrop of a world outcry over the shooting by Taliban Islamists of a 14-year-old Pakistani girl, Malala Yousafzai, who had become a voice against the suppression of women's rights.

While Yousafzai's case has made world headlines, people using social media in Afghanistan have made the point that oppression and violence against women are commonplace in Afghanistan.

Abdul Qader Rahimi, the regional director of the government-backed human rights commission in western Afghanistan, said violence against women had dramatically increased in the region recently.

"There is no doubt violence against women has increased. So far this year we have registered 100 cases of violence against women in the western region," he said, adding that many cases go unreported.

"But at least in Gul's case, we are glad the murderer has been arrested and brought to justice," he said.

Last year, in a case that made international headlines, police rescued a teenage girl, Sahar Gul, who was beaten and locked up in a toilet for five months after she defied her in-laws who tried to force her into prostitution.

FamilyFood Scarcity Looms Afer Devasting Floods by webaplanet(op): 9:09am On Oct 20, 2012
Food scarcity looms afer devasting floods
On October 20, 2012 · In Special Report 12:43 am

By Emmanuel Edukugho
There are fears among many people that the country is most likely to witness food shortage soon after the crippling floods which destroyed several farmlands and submerged many communities across the country.

As a result many lives were lost, severable people injured and an unestimated number of people were rendered homeless, as their houses have been destroyed.

Food is a basic necessity of life, without which man cannot survive. In a country like Nigeria with an estimated population of about 165 million people, high level of unemployment, weak agricultural base, while the ordinary Nigerian can be described as “poor” because he cannot afford a daily consumption of up to one US dollar.

Even before the flood disaster that adversely affected food production, poverty which is already widespread in the country, is inextricably linked with food insufficiency (not having enough to eat some or all the time) and food insecurity (not having enough to eat).

Under nutrition undermines the survival growth and development of not only children but adults also as it diminishes the strength and capacity of the nation. Inadequate nutrition undermines the ability of individuals to develop to their full potentials and contribute meaningfully to nation building.

Technically, food is an Agro-based product. All Foods are of plant or animal origin, and are produced through agricultural works.

How To Tackle Food Shortage – Prof Ogunmoyela

Saturday Vanguard sought the reaction of Professor Gbenga Ogunmoyela of Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun State on the perceived food shortage and likely high prices of food in the wake of the flooding which swept away farms in parts of the North, South West, South East, Delta, Edo and even south-south.

How do you see the ravaging flood?

First, the flood is destroying crops, animals, especially with the excessive rain, crops have been seriously affected. If there is lack of rainfall, with irrigation, the water levels can be controlled. But the rainfall we are having now has not been seen before.

Ordinarily, we don’t have enough food. So we depend on importation. Food import is basic especially in coastal places. Transregional transportation will be seriously threatened and so food prices and production will be affected.

What are the implications?

Traditionally when such things happen, there will be higher prices of food. People must brace up to this challenge. It’s going to be serious as there will be higher food prices in the country.

Are people likely to survive the flood?

It this trend (of rainfall/flooding) continues, there will be need to look at food processing. People can go for processed, food, that is to say canned food. This is where food science and technology can come in. Canned food is as good as the fresh ones. The question is getting the mindset of the people to accept processed food. Most people are used to fresh tomatoes, pepper, etc.

People should be properly enlightened to accept canned food as alternative to fresh food products. Canned food still have rich nutrients. We just have to change the mindset of the people.

Any other options?

Flood resistance varieties of food crops can also be grown. We should look for flood resistant crops and seeds. There are maize variety which can mature quickly after planting and also flood resistant rice variety. This is specialised area for agronomists to look into. This trend which involves flooding and rainfall will be with us for a long time to come.

Meanwhile, Saturday Vanguard check showed that the World Food Day was marked on 16th of October, 2012. Food has been described as a basic human right. The theme for this year’s World Food Day was: “Agricultural Cooperatives: Key to Feeding the World.” It was reported that one person dies every three seconds in the world from hunger.

That 70% of the hungry people lives in rural areas. Internationally, 50% of children are malnourished (versus less than 5% in wealthier nations). In the Nigerian food consumption and nutrition survey carried out few years ago, 42% of Nigerian children were stunted while 25% were underweight. According to a report of UN children fund, Nigeria is among 24 nations in which there are 80% of chronically undernourished children.

Results from analyses of dietary data in the form of ethnographic research studies, confirm differneces in food choices between the poor and the rich. The poor tend to consume more starches, fats and sugar but less of foods associated with good health, like fruits and vegetables, high-fibre grains and low-fat dairy products.

Studies have shown lower intakes of several nutrients among men, women and children who experience food insufficiency and food insecurity. Hunger and malnutrition are the gravest threats to the world’s public health and malnutrition is by far the biggest contributor to child mortality as already thousands of Nigerians go to bed hungry every night.

Nairaland GeneralCouple Using Cannabis Farm Profits For Kenyan Children Jailed by webaplanet(op): 11:25pm On Oct 19, 2012
Robin Hood' couple using cannabis farm profits for Kenyan children
A middle class "Robin Hood" couple have been jailed for three years for running a cannabis factory in their farmhouse, using profits to help sick and poor children in Kenya.

6:55AM BST 18 Oct 2012

To the impoverished Kenyan villagers, their regular visitors, an English couple in their sixties, were lifesavers.

They supported children through school, bought computers for an eye hospital nearby and paid for the amputation of a diseased leg that threatened to kill a young man.

What they did not know was that the couple’s charity was funded by a “Robin Hood” cannabis operation hidden in the depths of the British countryside.

Michael Foster and Susan Cooper pocketed as much as £400,000 during the six-year operation, and spent “much of it” in Africa, a court was told yesterday. They were jailed for three years after admitting four charges of producing the drug and one relating to the proceeds.

“This couple were both in their sixties and were of previous good character,” Jon Dee, prosecuting, told Lincoln Crown Court.

“It perhaps can be best summed up by Mr Foster who told police in his own words during his interview that it had started as a hobby and turned into a business.”
The couple were caught “completely by chance” when a police officer pursuing a burglar nearby recognised the distinctive smell coming from their farmhouse in Long Sutton, Lincs.

When the officer knocked on the door and asked Mrs Cooper, a 63-year-old divorcee, if she knew why he was there, she answered: “Yes I do.” Inside police found 159 cannabis plants, worth an estimated £20,000.

Two of the buildings had been converted into a growing room and drying room. Officers also recovered £20,000 in £1,000 bundles from a carrier bag.

Mr Dee added: “This was a professional and commercial set-up.”

A note from a man called “Jess” found in the farmhouse led police to a second property linked to the couple in the Norfolk village of Terrington St Clement.

“It gave the impression of being cleared in a hurry after the balloon had gone up in Long Sutton,” Mr Dee said. “The impression of the plant pots was still on the floor.”

Investigations showed the annual electricity bill for the Long Sutton farmhouse had risen by £2,000, which the couple explained by claiming to run a pottery business with a kiln.

Bank statements showed around £300,000 had been paid into their joint account over the six years between 2004 and 2010, when the operation had been running. A further £100,000 had gone through an account in Mrs Cooper’s maiden name.

Mr Dee added: “The Crown accept some of the money will not have come from drug dealing. At some point the home of Mrs Cooper’s mother was sold, but not all the money would have been paid in and £400,000 represents a fair assessment.”

When they were caught, Mrs Cooper “apologised profusely” for being unable to answer police questions.

Mr Foster, 62, admitted regularly selling cannabis in deals of around £1,500 to a local drug dealer to whom he had been introduced through a loan shark.

Gareth Wheetman, for Foster, said that the couple had not spent the profits on lavish living.

“Much of the money was being put to charitable and good use,” he said. They had paid for children from the village near Mombasa to be educated and bought equipment for the local eye hospital.

Chris Milligan, mitigating for Cooper, said: “Susan Cooper is a good person who has done a bad thing. There is another side to her, she has been a good mother, wife and partner to Mr Foster.”

She had offered not just money but care to the villagers. “When a young adult called Wilson got a gangrenous infection in his leg he was given two days to live. She paid for that treatment,” he said.

Passing sentence, Judge Sean Morris said that he accepted that they were a previously respectable couple of “positive good character”.

But he told Foster his own cannabis habit may have led to the psychosis which contributed to his crimes. ”Cannabis does that, it is a dangerous drug too often belittled,” Judge Morris told the couple.

“You were growing it on a significant scale, jetting off to Kenya on it.

“I am sure you were doing good things in Kenya with your drugs money, whether that was to appease your consciences I can only speculate.”
