Elder statesman and founder, Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Aare Afe Babalola, on Thursday reviewed the 25 years of the existence of Ekiti State, saying the state has nothing to celebrate.

Babalola, one of the active founders of the state, lamented, “Ekiti has not achieved the anticipated lofty objectives of the founding fathers.

“Twenty-five years after its creation, Ekiti State remains land-locked, motorway-locked, airport-locked, railway locked, industry-locked and power-locked, a development which adversely affects economic development in the state.”

Ekiti State was created on October 1, 1996 out of the old Ondo State.

But Babalola, in a statement titled, ‘Ekiti State: A toddler @ 25’, stated, “Looking at the position of things in Ekiti today, I am beginning to doubt if those of us (dead and alive) who fought for the creation of Ekiti State were right in opting out of the bigger Ondo State.

“There is nothing for Ekiti State to celebrate at 25. Unfortunately, the National Assembly, successive governors and ministers to who I have personally written petitions, have ignored them. Today, Ekiti remains an ailing state in the hand of a dying mother nation.”

Continuing, the Senior Advocate stated: “Today, October 1, in the year of our Lord, 2021, Ekiti State is 25 years old. We thank God for those of us who are still alive to witness the 25th year after the creation of our dear state called ‘The Fountain of Knowledge’ and the ‘The Land of Honour.’

“However, for me, there is nothing to celebrate by engaging in any social gathering. As one of the active founders of our state, I confirm that our hope was that the state would be nurtured to become the showpiece among the comity of states in Nigeria.

“Today, Ekiti State has the worst road network in the country, while the only industry in Ekiti, even before Ekiti State was created, the O’odua Textile Industry established during the Chief Obafemi Awolowo regime, has folded up.

“To compound matters, the state lacks the necessary infrastructure to attract investors to the state.
Like their peers in other states of the federation, local governments in Ekiti State do not have the necessary funds to assist farmers with farm equipment like tractors, bulldozers, pay loaders, low loaders and riggers which they used to rent out to farmers at subsidized rates as it was before the creation of the state.

“Today, there are many villages in Ekiti without electricity for years. The roads are worse than ever before. The airport which we thought would support Ikogosi Warm Spring remains a dream; industries that would have produced employment are non-existent, our highly qualified professionals are migrating to other states where they locate their businesses and pay their taxes.

“It is a notorious fact that apart from Gombe State, Ekiti State receives the least allocation from the monthly Federal Government allocation to states. It will interest you that Ekiti was contributing as much as 52 per cent of the total revenue of the old Western Region through the instrumentality of agricultural produce.

“But all that would appear to have disappeared, no thanks to the advent of oil which drew people away from their otherwise lucrative pastime of farming which used to fetch them handsome income in the days of yore,” Babalola stated.

However, the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, who was the secretary of the Committee for the Creation of Ekiti State, said the state was not where it was 25 years ago.

Oyebanji said, “We have certainly left Egypt, but not in our Jerusalem yet. I believe all leaders, present and past, have done their part in the development of the state.”

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has revealed that the Federal government will in October launch its N15 trillion infrastructure fund.

This as he urged commercial banks to join efforts with the government in alleviating poverty; adding that 1.6 million poor and vulnerable households, comprising more than eight million individuals are currently benefiting from the Conditional Cash Transfer programme which pays a bi-monthly stipend of N10,000 per household.

Buhari said this on Tuesday in Abuja while speaking virtually at the opening of the 14th Annual Banking and Finance Conference of Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, disclosed this in a statement titled ‘President Buhari says 1.6m households, eight million individuals benefiting from conditional cash transfers’.

The President said the National Social Register of poor and vulnerable Nigerians had 32.6 million persons from seven million poor and vulnerable households identified, imploring bankers to play a stronger role in improving livelihoods.

He explained that ongoing efforts to reduce poverty in the country continue to grow, with 1.6 million poor and vulnerable households, comprising more than 8 million individuals currently benefiting from the Conditional Cash Transfer program, while N300 billion has been disbursed to farmers.

“From this number, 1.6 million poor and vulnerable households, comprising more than 8 million individuals, are currently benefiting from the Conditional Cash Transfer programmme, which pays a bi-monthly stipend of N10, 000 per household,’’ he said.



According to him, the National Social Investment Programme was the largest in Sub-Saharan Africa and one of the largest in the world.

“Some of the various initiatives embarked upon to boost Agric trade in Nigeria include the Anchor Borrowers Programme through which the Central Bank of Nigeria had made more than 300 billion Naira available to over 3.1 million smallholder farmers of 21 different commodities including Rice, Wheat, Maize, Cotton, Cassava, Poultry, Soybeans, Groundnut, Fish, cultivating over 3.8 million hectares of farmland.
“It is on record that 80% of rice consumed in Nigeria is now produced locally.’’
The President said, in 2020, he approved the establishment of InfraCo Plc, a world-class infrastructure development vehicle, wholly focused on Nigeria, with combined debt and equity take-off capital of N15 trillion, managed by an independent infrastructure Fund Manager; to further strengthen recovery and empower more Nigerians.

“The Solar Power Naija project was launched in April 2021 with the aim of delivering 5 million off-grid solar connections to Nigerian households. In May 2021, the Rural Electrification Agency announced the planned deployment of solar-powered grids to 200 Primary Health Centres and 104 Unity Schools nationwide.

“Under the Family Homes Fund Limited, Social Housing programme incorporated by the Federal Government of Nigeria, more than two thousand hectares of land with title documents have been issued by 24 states with the capacity to accommodate about 65,000 new homes. The Central Bank of Nigeria is providing a N200 Billion financing facility, with a guarantee by the Federal Government,’’ he said.

Referencing a report from the National Bureau of Statistics which revealed that Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product grew 5.01 per cent in the second quarter of 2021, the President said, “This is cheery news and an indication that the efforts of this administration at repositioning the economy is paying off.”


He urged bankers and financial institutions to leverage the abundant business opportunities to grow the economy.

He implored financial institutions to play a stronger role in making sure the Nigerian Small and Medium Enterprises were fit for purpose, with support in full implementation of “Agreement”.

“Indeed financial intermediary could not be any more relevant than at a time like this. Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has blasted the Miyetti Allah Kataul Hore over plans to move against the anti-open grazing law in the state and other southern states.

Akeredolu who is the Chairman of the South West Governors’ Forum and the Coordinator of the Southern Governors’ Forum disclosed that nothing would make him and other governors rescind their decision.

The governor stated this on Wednesday in a statement issued by his aide on Special Duties and Strategy, Dr Doyin Odebowale.

Recall that the group had through its secretary, Saleh Alhassan stated the anti-open grazing laws would affect the relative peace and stability currently enjoyed in communities.

Akeredolu said the move by Miyetti Allah was an indication that the group was unbothered about the crimes perpetrated under the pretence of being herders.

While emphasizing that no bandit would be allowed to operate in the State under “any dubious guise”, he said the government has the “responsibility to implement the law for the benefit of the people of the state and those, who may share in their aspiration for development of their God-given space.”

“They claim to be above the law of any State in the Federation. They warn of the imminent breach of peace and promotion of pervasive anarchy if they are not allowed to ravage the sweat and toil of the long-suffering farmers who, apparently, don’t count for much in the scheme of things in their estimation.

“No part of our land will be given to foreigners who cling to a dubious regional protocol as an instrument validating dispossession. Let him practice his cultural practices on his father’s land. His likes will not be permitted to operate with impunity in Ondo State. We will defend our land.

Operatives of the Department of State Services, on Thursday, dispersed medical doctors, who stormed the Sheraton Hotels, Abuja, to take part in the recruitment interview organised by the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health.

The PUNCH had on Tuesday reported that medical consultants in their hundreds flooded the Ladi Kwali Hall of the hotel to participate in the recruitment, while another exercise was scheduled for Thursday.

Our correspondents gathered that the DSS operatives stormed the hotel on Thursday morning and dispersed the doctors and journalists, who gathered at the venue.

A journalist with the International Centre for Investigative Reporting, Marcus Fatunde, was arrested at the venue.

Fatunde was, however, released later.

An eyewitness told The PUNCH, “When I came here, we saw the DSS operatives dispersing the people that came for the interview and before we knew it, everywhere had been scattered.

“A journalist with the ICIR, Marcus Fatunde, was also arrested, but he has been released.”



A doctor, who did not want his name in print said, “Some of us, who came here today, came because we don’t even have jobs and we don’t want to do the wrong things.

“Two categories of people were here today: the jobless ones and the ones who are poorly remunerated.

“We didn’t commit any crime; we just wanted a better system. So, why is the government trying to frustrate us?

The Vice-President, Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, Adejo Arome, told The PUNCH that the organisers of the interview confirmed to him that the exercise had been suspended.

He said, “Well, some people got to the venue today (Thursday) and when they didn’t meet anyone, they called me and I confirmed from the recruiters and some other doctors that the recruitment has been suspended.

“The recruitment on Tuesday garnered coverage, because of the media publicity. It was everywhere that doctors were going to Saudi Arabia.

“The recruiters had to suspend it because the Federal Government said it felt embarrassed by the news.


“It is a big shame. The government has no right to infringe on the right of the citizens to choose to go to another country. If the system is not working, let them go to another country.”

Efforts made to get the reaction of the spokesman for the DSS, Peter Afunanya, did not yield positive results as of the time of filing this report as he did not take his calls and had yet to respond to a message sent to his mobile telephone.
