HNosegbe: I thought this university was established by an Act of Parliament. Does the president have the power to unilaterally rename an instiution established by an Act of Parliament?
Then go to court and spare us all the BS pls.

jason123: Are you sure?! Please, why can't we be honest and objective for once in Nigeria.

When the change of name of University of Nigeria was suggested, we did not sleep in NL. In fact, many said it was a conspiracy by Nigeria to remove anything Ndigbo from her history, blah, blah, blah! Now, Lagosians are saying the same, they are now hypocrites?? It means they do not love MKO?!

Has politics really blinded you guys that much?! undecided

As far as I am concerned, most of your(that includes papabrowne and co) arguments for, are WEAK; In fact, too weak to be considered an argument.

UNILAG is a brand name that commands respect. WTF is MAUL?! How can the GEJ just wake up one morning, no input from the legislative arm, remove a brand name that was created a year after Nigeria became a republic? When UNILAG was producing graduates, GEJ was still a kid!

What is wrong is wrong. Lets be honest!
At least we all know the reason a name change for the Uni was rejected and it had nothing to do with personality or "aesthetics". A name change had initially been proposed to honour the late Zik but while alive' the late Statesman had requested that the name never be changed but that rather it be preserved for a number of reasons I assume u can reason out therefor it wouldve been innapropriate to rename a school that was left untouched in honour of a late National Hero in honour of some other Hero hence the rejection of the idea. Thank me later for educating you.
Now tell me, what are the arguments against MAU? That UNILAG is a 50 year brand! What forking brand is that?
Tell me, if the university of CapeTown or Pretoria were to be renamed in Honour of Nelson Mandela would there be protests and condemnations? Absolutely not and why is that? I'll tell you; the man is a Hero and revered by most. Now it begs the question; Is MKO a Yoruba Hero? If he is then yall shoud SHUT THE FORK UP and honour him as such but if you agree he's not, then I can understand your rage but don't come here with that impish argument abt him being a hero but UNILAG being a brand that's untouchable! That's just lame.

oyb: for years several sw states have honored abiola by declaring june 12 a public holiday

if the aso rock dunce was sincere, that would have been what he should have done - decalre june 12 a national public holiday

some have said the real democracy day should be june 12

there are all sorts of buildings and institutions that the silly man could have chosen to name after abiola - but we know his goal - the great disuniter

of course, he had to go for the one that would cause the most cntroversy

dumb administration dumber president
Oodo, who needs another public holiday?

okosodo: Abiola did‘nt fight for any1, he fought 4 himself
T9ksy: [i]Thank you, ojare!

MKO has never championed the course of the poor and the downtrodden rather he fought for his pocket and for which he was amply

rewarded by the same cabal who have been holding the whole country back for decades and who later had him killed when their r/ship

went sour. MKO did not die for us or democracy but for his inordinate ambition.

I know some will point to the myriad mosques he built all over the country as part of his contributions to the masses.

Are these the thoughts of the average Yoruba man also? Gradually true feelings are being let out.

Many have read several meanings into the presidential gesture of re-naming the 50-year
old University of Lagos, after the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olwale (MKO) Abiola,
fondly regarded as the June 12 hero and democracy icon, which many believe prefaced
the birth of the nation’s democracy.
While some think it is a political masterstroke to break into the South west political bloc,
others see it as playing to the gallery, as it upturns the trend in the past where the
Federal Government shied away from discussing the Abiola phenomenon in the Nigerian
political space. Yet, others think it is mere red herring tactic to divert attention from the
core issues of governance.
But more curiously, the gesture seems to have provoked avalanche of mixed reactions,
many of which are condemnatory of the Federal Government .
....But expectedly, the President’s announcement excited the Abiola family which,
yesterday, said they were ecstatic over the renaming of the University of Lagos (UNILAG)
as the Moshood Abiola University.
In a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mr Abdul Abiola, son of
the late politician said there was nothing wrong with the naming of the university after
his father.
``We are shocked by the reactions trailing this development. My late father believed so
much in education.”
Abiola’s first child, Lola Abiola-Edewor and Hafsat Abiola-Costello said that the Federal
Government should be commended for recognizing the contribution of the late politician
to the return of democracy in the country.
Abiola-Edewor however condemned the protest by some students saying that the
gesture was long overdue.
Like her brother, she said: “I really do not understand all of the hues and cries. Nigerians
had demanded severally that MKO be immortalised and asked why nothing had been
done till date. What I cannot understand though is how renaming of UNILAG has
degenerated into such a controversy. University of Ife was renamed Obafemi Awolowo
University and it has remained,” Abiola-Edewor said.
Abiola-Costello however tasked the Federal Government on the alleviation of poverty
amongst Nigerians.
...But former Edo State governor, Chief John Oyegun said “for me it is very good. It is high
time a major national monument is named after Abiola.

dayokanu: University of Nigeria Alumni Association (UNAA) has warned the Federal Government over its plan to rename their Alma mater after the late Biafra warlord, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegu Ojukwu. The association suggested the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) as a more befitting institution to be named after Ojukwu. Ojukwu is a graduate of NDA.

Late Nigerian Nationalist Dr Nnamdi Azikwe rejected calls for UNN to be named after him when he was alive, insisting UNN should retain its name. University of Jos Alumni association Lagos Plateau State branch also called sent an open letter to President Jonathan, stating the association does not approve of proposals in the Presidency to rename UNIJOS after former Nigerian President General Yakubu Gowon.
I'd already posted this

wesley80: Renaming UNN would always be a debateable issue in the SE esp when one considers the fact that the great Zik of Africa requested that the institution not be renamed after him in other to retain its uniqueness and foster unity and his appeal was heeded even after death. That said, its difficult to imagine students protesting against renaming UNN after Ojukwu in the scale we've seen in Lagos and the widespread condemnation that has trailed the decision coming from Igbo leaders, this is just embarrassing. All of a sudden it seems all that matters is prestige and nothing else! SMH

eGuerrilla: Whether you love him unconditionally as some do or feel exercised by the various roles he played during his life, it can only be for reasons of expediency that you tag Abiola, the one-time chairman of NPN (forerunner of PDP) and acclaimed winner of the freest elections held in Nigeria to date, as some kind of regional leader.
I say this because little else could possibly account for your feigned indignation...

Ermmm sure I'm not the only one tired of reading about a certain MKO Abiola today, so can we pls have some FRESH AIR? Thanks.

Since GEJ has taken a lot of hits abt this lately, guess its only fair to share some progress report. Just wondering if someone else saw the potential in this statement below.

Oil companies said trapping associated
gas is not profitable enough without a
market.
Global gas prices are at record lows and
though Nigeria desperately needs it for
electricity, its power sector is not
organised enough to make much use of
it.
“Harnessing gas is only half of the story;
gas needs customers as well. To
encourage
further investment and to boost the
supply of gas to domestic consumers,
Nigeria needs
a comprehensive and flexible gas
infrastructure that allows for
distribution,” said Shell on
its website.
Think of a country of 150m peeps with most stuck on very unclean kerosene and hazardous firewood but yet there's no mkt for gas! What wld it take to draw away all these folks from using kerosene and firewood and switch over to gas thereby saving our trees and the environment? How bout pulling the subsidy on kerosene(its non existent anyway) and instead heavily subsidizing gas cylinders and gas cookers? Just a thot and I think its worth considering.
Politics › New PIB To Outlaw Gas Flaring By December by wesley80(op): 7:17pm On May 29, 2012

The newly-drafted Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), if passed by the National Assembly, will
mandate oil companies operating in Nigeria to stop flaring gas by the end of this year or
risk paying fines.
Nigeria remains the world's second biggest burner of gas associated with crude oil
production after Russia.
“Natural gas shall not be flared or vented after 31st December, 2012, in any oil and gas
production operation, block or field, onshore or offshore, or gas facility, except under
exceptional and temporary circumstances”, said a new draft of the PIB seen by Reuters.
“Any licenced company which flares or vents gas without the permission of the Minister
in (special) circumstances ... shall be liable to pay a fine which shall not be less than the
value of gas,” said the reform bill.
Reuters reported that Nigeria flared some 30 billion standard cubic feet of gas in
January, an equivalent to a third of the annual consumption of an industrialised country
like the United Kingdom.
Of that, ExxonMobil topped the list, flaring 9.85 billion cubic feet out of 38.64 billion
produced, while Chevron flared 8.25 billion cubic feet out of 19.23 billion.
Leading operator Shell, which runs Nigeria's liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant, flared
5.44 billion cubic feet, a relatively small part of the 76.4 billion it produced.
All have been criticised by environmental groups, but the oil majors retort that they
would be happy to trap all of the gas if the government provided them with a market for
it.
The World Bank estimates that five trillion cubic feet of gas was flared globally last year,
releasing 360 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, equal to
France's total emissions or 70 million cars’ worth.
Most environmental campaigners admit this bill's deadline is unrealistic.
“We are almost in June and the bill still has a distance to go before it becomes law. I do
not therefore see the goal to be achievable within the stated time frame," said President
of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni people, Ledum Mitee.
Oil companies said trapping associated gas is not profitable enough without a market.
Global gas prices are at record lows and though Nigeria desperately needs it for
electricity, its power sector is not organised enough to make much use of it.
“Harnessing gas is only half of the story; gas needs customers as well. To encourage
further investment and to boost the supply of gas to domestic consumers, Nigeria needs
a comprehensive and flexible gas infrastructure that allows for distribution,” said Shell on
its website.
More radical campaigners urge stopping the flaring anyway.
“Where there's no infrastructure to convert the wasted gas into power, production of
crude ... can simply be shut down," said Nnimmo Bassey of Friends of the Earth, Nig

BY DANIEL GUMM WARRI – THE Nigerian local content got a boost, weekend, as Petroleum Minister, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, inaugurated Africa’s largest oil vessel in Warri, Delta State. The oil equipment, christened Akpevweoghene Offshore Pipelaying/Derrick Barge, is owned by an indigenous oil servicing company, FENOG Nigeria Limited. The Petroleum Minister, at the ceremony, witnessed by Group Executive Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Mr. Andy Yakubu and his Gas Resources counterpart, Mr. David Ige, as well as Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, Engr. Ernest Nwapa, assured that the Federal Government would continue to support and encourage indigenous companies operating in the oil industry in line with its local content policy. Mrs. Alison-Madueke, who said she was impressed by the giant strides achieved by FENOG, especially with the company’s acquisition of the HDD Technology and the Akpevweoghene barge, assured that the local content policy was not a lip service and mere slogan. She said the policy would entrench indigenous operators in the nation’s oil industry. The minister, who was conducted round the unique features of the equipment by the company’s Executive Director, Mr. Mathew Tonlagha; Group General Manager, Mr. Bello and General Manager, Engr. Chukwudi Uwakwe, praised FENOG’s management for its steadfastness and commitment to the growth of the local content policy. Mrs. Alison-Madueke charged other operators in the oil industry to emulate FENOG Nigeria. She said: “I am extremely impressed with what I have seen here today at FENOG Nigeria. This is 100 per cent indigenous Nigerian company that has got to the stage that it can actually procure and manage a vessel of this size that can carry over 300 people. With the kind of facilities we have seen here that can actually lay pipes offshore from 4” to 36″, I believe it is something that is most commendable.”
