FashionRe: Tips For Maintaining Braids by WesleyanA(f): 1:49am On Dec 21, 2006
thanks @funketobi and TOH smiley

try to stay away from products that contain petrolum aka grease. you can use a little on your braids to make it shine but don't use it on your scalp. they're cheap but . . .

pink oil, sulfur 8 (spray for braids) = really good for braids obviously. lol I don't know much products that work well.

Hmmmm , now I like to think of myself as an open-minded person, so perhaps Shango can explain the apparent contradiction in this post for us. I am, to quote another Nairalander, confuzzled by this. In another discussion, you posted the picture of a woman and said that was you. Abi there are two Shangos on Nairaland huh

Honestly, my first preference is for women with natural hair, but it becomes much more of a debate than it needs to be when people think they can judge your politics from your hairstyle. There's an Outkast lyric about this: "Is every nigga with dreads for the cause? No. So don't get caught up in appearance. "
shango got pwned. lol

Actually Wesley, my hair goes a Little passed my shoulders, that is how beautifully kinky it is, it just really shrinks up. I love my hair. I do many things with it, many. My sisters hair is kinkier, nappier (which ever you prefer) than mines, I am the hairdresser in the family, I keep up her hair as well. I am going to find some pictures of her with her natural hair styles I did in her hair and post it. That will be fun. Thank you for the compliment on my smile.

By the way, I miss you, how are you doing today?

I must say WesleyanA, I am so proud of you. grin
lol mine hasn't grown that long then i guess. i remember the first time i washed it when i cut the rest of my perm off. it shrunk so bad i was scared. lol

i'm doing great. how are you wink
your wonderful too sis!

Much ado about nothing!!!

Divadarlin, if you are going to complain that black women should not perm their hair, then take this advice. Dont communicate in the English Language, since it is the language of the caucasian. Dont eat European cuisine, but limit your intake to African food. Dont even bother going to school in the western world, but rather move back to Naija and choose to school there. And moreso, come out with ethnic hair products that would benefit black women.

And oh, lest I forget, don't eat with cutleries, but with your bare hands, because you don't want to act white.
she's not complaining that black women shouldn't perm their hair.
she's just challenging the excuse people are making that "natural hair is hard to manage"
It won't be hard to manage if people work toward improving themselves rather than just taking whatever life throws in their way.

your advice doesn't make sense because she can easily come out and tell you that "if you're going to perm your hair, then take this advice. bleach your skin as well, blah blah blah don't ever eat african food, don't even sing any rap/ african music e.t.c"

so yeah arguments like that don't make sense (uchenna also gave an example w/ the palm wine thing).

perming your hair don't mean your trying to be white e.t.c she's just challenging why people still do it even though it breaks and damages their hair and all that (it works for some people though).

Sista, I love your hair!! That's pretty much exactly how my hair is. only a little longer (i want to grow it really long)
+ you've got a wonderful friendly smile cheesy kiss kiss

yes i love how they twist on their own and all that and sometimes i wonder why everyone perms huh
it's okay for some to perm but why everyone? lol that's why it took me so long to stop using perm plus i've grown enough to do whatever i want w/ my hair even though my mom complianed at first (now she really likes it. lol)

It is amazing how we as black people take the easy way out with everything-
We don't demand reparations for slavery because it has been so LOOONG AGO, yet till today the German government has special grants and scholarships for people of Jewish decent.

Oprah Winfrey built the first all girls’ high school in an impoverished neighborhood (aka black) in South Africa. Noticed I said FIRST, because you see after the apartheid was abolished, the black people did not demand that the White people build up their communities.

Now the same foolish excuse is chimed by black people everywhere, “Our natural hair is too difficult to maintain that’s why we perm it." How many black people stop to ask themselves what can we do to make our hair better? How many black people ask themselves what can we do with reparations? How many ask ourselves what can WE do to build up our communities? Because white people and companies haven't volunteered to do so; we roll with it.
We black people avoid investing time in things that better the quality of life for our people. While white people are investing millions into skin and hair care research, amongst other things; we just fold our arms, and hope they throw a bone our way, because research takes a lot of time and money, and unfortunately, a lot of black people think of "Now" and not long-term.
Research is being and HAS been done for hair and skin care, but it is not for us. They figure out what works for white people, and cross their fingers in hope that it works for us. But guess what, it doesn't!! So what do we do? We try and make our hair more like theirs to make up for it!!!

Why am I venting? I was tired of my perming my hair. Moving to yankee, for some reason my relaxed hair failed to adjust. It always grows, and sheds back up to shoulder length. I decided to go "natural", Something other women from other cultures take for granted (white people have their own perm), and I realized how anti-black hair the world truly is. The products don't work for your hair, lots of hairdressers only know how to take a hot comb to it, braid is practically your fail-safe option, and interestingly enough, turns out that white people are more interested in natural black hair than blacks.
Hopefully one of those white people will become dermatologists in future and do some research and invest some money into it, because I don't see too many people black out there that give a dam%.
WORD!!
I've been thinking the same thing too!
everytime i go to the store to get hair products, black or "ethnic" hair care is always buried in a hard to reach corner with only a few products.
I've stopped relaxing my hair not because i think perm is bad but it doesn't work for my hair (it works for some others though).

nappy hair is hard to manage because we don't know how to/ have the resourses to take care of it. instead of creating it for ourselves, we go the easy (but not best) way. Most of the products we use on our hair is not made for our hair type
pantene pro-v for people of color (that's the only popular brand that's targeted at people w/ our type of hair but still for somereason it takes me long to find it).
