And with this comes the realization that civilian casualties will be high and the economic cost will be enormous if things get worse than it currently is.
Already, many people are canceling plans to visit the region, many are moving out, moving goods has become more difficult and security forces are yet to fully commit to combating hostilities in the region.

Every information on ISWAP that I have been seeing in the last few days seem to point towards the group preparing to fight to the last in the next offensive. It will be of great help if the government can get Chad and Cameroon to launch offensives from their own sides at the same time, it will be extremely difficult for the enemy to fight on multiple fronts.
Also, NAF should be working with intelligence communities to go after the enemy's important weapons. Soften them up a lot before the offensive begins then they should continue providing CAS.

Lastly, the mistakes of former offensives should not be made, the military should already have plans to consolidate on whatever would be achieved in this offensive to prevent the enemy from ever recovering.

Recently read somewhere that one of the Canadian companies that used to supply key components of Turkish drone programs recently filed for bankruptcy after attempting to present their case to Canadian global affairs to lift the embargo placed on turkey several times without succeeding. Nigerian government could hire some of their workers to serve as advisors in the Nigerian drone program, it might speed things up a bit.

Some can only take 12.7mm hits on frontal arc, but only stop AK-47 rifle 7.62mm hits on both sides and rear.

Its best variant that withstand 12.7mm all round is only comfortable if Bandit or ISWAP fires DShK from long distance, anything closer than 300 feet to that armour will fully penetrate and kill all our soldiers inside your magical Type 89 APC that you are praising like its the perfect equipment for Nigerian Army to succeed

Is it not clear to you that the intent was to show that only IFVs can't be deployed like he wants. Was it only IFVs and soft skins US was moving around with in Afghanistan?
Why then did you interpret it to me supporting the use of IFVs?
Towards the end of the writeup I clearly stated that the Emiratis and Saudis were still using APCs in Yemen.

Subsequent videos of logistics being moved to the NE features heavy escorts. A video was circulating few days ago of trainees being moved to somewhere in the NE with air escort.


It seems the military wants to keep most of the phantom II out of the north east, most of them have been distributed to many states.
While many troops are still moving around with guntrucks in the NE, it could be that they are planning on deploying a separate platform to the frontlines.

The need for greater firepower does not erase the need for protected mobility Sha, Nigeria cannot afford convoys filled with IFVs across the various theaters. The most pressing need is to reduce the number of soft skins used in battles. Lack of protected mobility is the single largest cause of casualties on NA's side. And for the time being, the ST1 can do the job any IFV is going to do howbeit more expensively. With time, the need for greater firepower will be satisfied.

The type 89 can withstand up to 12.7mm ammo, anything beyond that, the enemy has in little quantity.

I have been on the proposing side for better equipping and functionality of the NPF, given them the right tools and reengineering structurally to enable them do a better job for all Nigerians.
SOLUTION: IT's going to be a long road but they should stop their rhetoric's and create a special Swat team, with about a 100Men in each state, they should be well equipped with tactical gears, armored and soft skin mobility(APC 2 per state X 36 =72), heavy firepower and communications. They would be spaced in each state at least into four teams comprising of 25men for each formation, having their own building's within the police division command and one at the state commands no matter how small with our their hostels and lounge. They would form the tip of the spear for any challenge too overwhelming for the Mopol units in any state. They aren't for patrols except in critical times, each roll out squad should comprise of 10 man team each, meaning we have two teams and an reserve of 5. These 5men base roster must be at the base incase of backups or emergencies when a unit calls. If they can stay highly disciplined and dedicated they would motivate a face lift of the Nigeria police force.

The police doesn't really lack much in terms of equipment, they have APCs, helicopters and so on, there are as much as 20 APCs operated by the police in Osun state alone, Lagos state has more. The problem is structural, they are not motivated or even willing to work.
There is really no need for another special police unit, the mobile police force can be reorganized to make them as effective as they used to be. Stop the SPU nonsense and let the private sector take care of that. Then improve their training to be able to counter emerging threats, maybe sending their trainers out for training could help or bringing in trainers from other countries.
Establishing a new unit will only lead to redundancy and uselessness of some of other units.
Then increase intelligence gathering capacity of the police force, how can a police force function without proper intelligence.
Then increase the number of the personnels of the police force, the current number is far too low ebring about any reasonable result, almost every location in this country is a crime scene, increase the number of stations and posts too. Allow states and local governments create their own law enforcement agencies that will be subordinate to the NPF and find a way to foster cooperation. Let there be clear rules on jurisdiction and AORs to avoid conflicts and more importantly, bring about a system outside of the police force that will oversee the activities of law enforcement agents across the country. To start with, give them the mandate to reduce cultism to a level where it doesn't pose any threat.
Of course all these can't be done if the welfarism of the personnels is ignored, we will just be going around circles.

And I'm also glad NA is deepening relations with NORINCO, they have almost everything NA needs and with time, NA might get some TOT. Unless if later to fit with modern RCWS E/O turret or KPV or ZSU, its new NA sardine tin cans to replace lost old Steyr APC.

No thermal night vision, no gun stabilizer, no superior firepower. NA should have bought 40 units same Type 89 in IFV version RCWS 25mm rapid fire cannon to slaughter ISWAP dead, its amphibious, just add IED& RPG protection, simple.

Guys here asking for better infantry firepower, Nigeria no get money, and Army/MoD waste the little cash we find.

Ordinary Zamfara Bandit RPG will destroy it into pieces or close range DShK Toyota truck. Its waste of money not game changer at all !

It is not too heart-warming but still a good news, NA could have done better but the motive could have been finding a reasonable replacement for guntrucks in the hot zones in reasonable QUANTITY. I doubt they could get 40 modern IFVs for the price of 60 of these and its not like IFVs are indestructible. A little modification such as adding cage armor to these will significantly reduce the risk of rpgs. And in addition to the MTLBs and BMPs, it will definitely tilt the balance more in favor of NA in the next offensive. The MTLBs were reported to have been very effective in the last offensive.
And with increasing numbers of tracked platforms, NA's ability to continue offensive deep into the raining seasons increases.

Would it make any sense for the navy to deploy to the location after knowing that the Russians were closer to the scene? The Russians could have gotten the distress signal first and might have communicated their readiness to help with naval HQ though that isn't necessary so far the Nigerian navy was aware of their presence in Nigeria's EEZ. It could have also been that it was NN that got the information first and knowing there is a naval vessel close to the scene inform the Russians and solicit for their help. There are videos and pictures of the NN doing something similar on this thread. NN has also rescued vessels outside of Nigeria's EEZ several times.

The situation in lake Chad is an entirely different story, with many fishermen working for ISWAP to generate income for the group.

However, residents of Kwatsal village billed N4million were said to have already paid N2million out of the money to the bandits.

“All the villages were given up to Friday to pay the money or risk attack. People are paying because they have no other option,” one of the sources added.

A member representing Sabon Birni North Constituency, Aminu Almustapha Gobir, who confirmed the development, said there had been no attack in Sabon Birni in recent times because the locals were complying with the directive of the bandits.

“The people prefer to pay and live in peace in their communities than to rely on security agencies or go on exile,” he said.

“We have different groups of bandits in the area,but if you pay a levy to this group how sure are you the other group will not attack you?”

“The same scenario unfolded in Gatawa and Tarah, which were attacked and several of their people abducted by different groups of bandits. Their relatives had to pay ransom to those different groups before their release.

“This is what will continue to happen, if one group places a levy on you and you pay, another group will come to either attack you or demand for levy again and you must pay them or face the consequences,” he said.

Several calls placed to the spokesman for the police in Sokoto, ASP Sanusi Abubakar, and the Commissioner for Security and Carriers Matters, Colonel Garba Moyi (retd), were not answered.

How sure are they that the same bandits won't demand for money again next month? Then other bandit groups will start demanding too every month. Many of these communities are very remote without any government presence, it will take years if government wants to go the normal route, many of them will be willing to fight the bandits if given arms, organize them into vigilante groups so that they can at least have something to defend themselves with. We will deal with the consequences of that later but for every day the government waits, the bandits get stronger. Many of them are already taking in several millions each month that is mostly spent on more weapons. Slow their growth and limit their movements with vigilantes to start with.
Call them JTF or whatever you like, have military officers heading them for oversight and so on, whichever way, many southern states are already doing this. Was traveling at night on Saturday and I was amazed at how conscious security wise some states in the SW are, they are not where they aught to be yet but they've made positive steps. The men of the NPF we saw were only concerned about their pockets yet at the point we met JTF personells(vigilantes) they were very professional.

Did you just day NAF should attack fishermen? This sounds insensitive & irresponsible at the same time, it is well known to everyone that most of those fishermen pay taxes to ISWAP in order to carryout their business w/o harassment same way they tax other commodities within their territory. If you don't want them to pay taxes it's either you relocate all of them and arrange a way to cater for them or flush out the insurgents. The government can't be forcing people to leave IDP camps back to their communities some of which are still being held by terrorists and expect them not to do the biddings of the terrorists, they only trying to survive, if you were in their shoes you will also pay those taxes to save your life/business... Life is already hard for these people we shouldn't compound their woes.

It was reported that ISWAP constructed about 2000 boats for the purpose of fishing and patrolling those waters, the vast majority of those fishing in the lake Chad Islands are ISWAP members or at least work for the terror organization. The government has banned fishing in that part of the state and anyone still fishing in the lake is committing an offense. Government has every right to enforce the ban. There are other towns where such activities are allowed for example baga town.

And then the attacks does not necessarily have to be on humans, the airforce could go after the boats being used for such activities during the hours they are not being used and are beached or moored

The second is how ISWAP is financed. The fish business. NAF needs to intensify attacks on fishermen in the lake Chad, many of them work for ISWAP.
