Two bandit leaders have been arrested in the last one week.

Is it that crimes along the Abuja-kaduna highway no longer gets reported or what? That side has been quiet for a long time now.

I swear it's not this guy's fault, it is the media giving bandits platforms to yarn their dust that should be blamed. What other proof is needed to accept that the guy is also a bandit or at the very least a collaborator? Yet they keep inviting him because of the sensationalism and the traffic it would generate for them.

They've killed people for violating sit at home orders.

The bitter pill of IPOB recklessly killing and enforcing hardship on civilians in the South East is very difficult to swallow for those who encouraged them when this madness started hence the silence. If it were to be soldiers killed or police station burnt, it would have been trending enormously.
The government would be making a lethal mistake by launching another military operation in that axis any time soon, allow the miscreant to continue with this behavior for some time, it is only a matter of time before the people who originally supported them start mobbing them and giving Intel to law enforcement agencies. They progressed from declaring sit at home once a year to enforcing it twice a week.
Just this morning, someone posted an advisory for people to stop driving or moving around with hilux vehicles as they are now attacking people in such vehicles. It can only get worse from here as most of these supposed freedom fighters are actually criminals recruited after the jailbreak and this is what they live for. Whoever is heading IPOB won't be able to stop them when he realizes the damage that is being done.

I believe they must have learnt not to cluster together after several years of Battlefield experience. Sending more snipers to the Frontline will increase the figures. Also the airforce actually records significant casualties against the enemies.

For those recommending negotiations and dialogues with some of these armed groups, we first need to understand that for any negotiation to be successful, the country must be willing to give the armed groups some things. Now what do these people want, can the country give it to them, what else can the country give that will satisfy them?

Happy they are recognizing the role law enforcement is supposed to play in solving the problems but not this police force Sha. Those numbers would be more meaningful in the military and others.

Many of them will definitely go rogue, even within the police force and the military we have lot's of rogue personnels, but with adequate oversight and management, meaningful results will still be achieved.
And these militias will be under community leaders and traditional rulers so if a particular section is giving you problems, you know who to hold responsible or go after.
I don't know how Osun state did it with the harmonized vigilante group which is under the supervision of the police force and they've been really effective.

You are all seeing this? Bandits, who used to be armed with dane guns and bows have now gotten brave and equipped enough to actively go hunting for soldiers. In fact, they attacked and sacked a military outpost last week if I remember correctly. Bandits, not Boko Haram or ISWAP are doing this. I knew this would happen, but not so soon. And the latest reports have it that Boko Haram are now training them. Soon, both sides will be indistinguishable.

Don't know about you, but I am actually scared, more than I've been in years. I get more scared when estimates are thrown around that these bandits number from 50k to 70K. Add in Boko Haram, ISWAP, Fulani herdsmen and unknown gunmen in the east and it is easy to see that the NA is facing an enemy almost if not more equal to it in size and speedily risks being overwhelmed.

This is scary and I'm not being an alarmist.

Allowing vigilantes and militias to play more role in the conflict will help. Probably also allowing them to carry assault riffles too.

Yeah, the Army got some ground radars, thermal cameras and long range cameras too but I don't think in meaningful quantities.

Toju, could you please confirm the boldened again, I read somewhere some months ago about Nigeria acquiring few units of Thales ground radar system, I think it was the squire system I'm not so sure and I can't remember where I read it.

The ground radar in the video link below will be particularly useful in the northwest where bandits move in large numbers to their targets, if they could be spotted at say 30km away, they can be taken out by artilleries or the military could plan an ambush.

We all have our biases and it affects our judgments one way or another, nobody is happy with the way things are in Nigeria right now. As long as anyone doesn't harbor evil intentions towards the country, I'm cool with the person.
We are all here(at least I am) to identify and discuss solutions to the numerous problems of this country from our own point of view and limited knowledge and to be frank, many of what has been discussed here have actually been implemented (not saying the military checks this place for information ).

We also share knowledge and materials that could be of help to us too. There is a certain level of bond among many of us here, the way we've been interacting with one another for many years now without really knowing one another. At times I get scared once I notice it's been long since some people contributed to the thread, especially those in high risks locations, I'm starting to view many here as brothers already. Being a member of this thread has been an amazing experience so far and it has taught me so many lessons in life. It's a bit sad that many who were here in the early days of the thread are no longer available here but as an adage says, 20 children cannot play together for 20 years.

Glad that the Army already ordered the Viper MRAP but to be frank, stanag level 1 isn't enough ballistic protection where the enemy has enough 12.7mm ammunitions and other armor piercing bullet callibres.

They could have shown the UAV too though,it would have been a great marketing opportunity.
They could have also mentioned their current production capacity, not just telling us they now produce the ARA faster, I will root for them more if I know they are capable of producing 20-25 per month.
The army for kukuma turn the place into another barracks with the way they've painted the whole place in their colors , no be only them be their partner now, but on a serious note I'm very glad with the support provided.
Government at all levels should also attempt to support the company and other indeginous companies too. For example, the 100 hectares could have been provided for free or at least at a subsidized rate. Tax holidays, grants and so on are also other ways by which we can support the company. On the part of the FG, they should focus on reactivation Ajaokuta, that alone is a great support they can render to the company.

The last time there was an active war in the United States, a lot of civilians were caught in the crossfire. Let's not even go too far, one of the rioters at the capitol hill was shot and killed by US law enforcement agents. The last time there was also a protest against police brutality in the US, the police ended up brutalizing several protesters. They are wise enough not to allow their country turn into a warzone and that's the major difference.
You don't need to site what's happening in the US to ascertain what's bad and what's good, it shouldn't be that difficult to point out.

It's sad but it happens. US government covered up a lot of civilian deaths from airstrike in Afghanistan and Iraq, one even happened recently, it was a drone strike, they monitored the guy's movement and behaviors for hours before launching the missile only for the guy to turn out to be an aid worker. Same in Syria and Libya. There is a video on this thread with troops fixing a bright colored fabric on the roof of vehicles so as to make it very glaring they are not the terrorists. Otherwise the pilot will see a mass aggregation of humans with weapons and if he isn't aware of the position of own troops, there is a very possibility of him dropping a bomb on such a sweet target. EO devices were designed to help get a clearer picture of targets but even that isn't error free. As air operation increases, the margin for error increases.
Apart from that, the sales and taxes from fishes and pepper is the biggest source of funding for ISWAP, the military should actually find a way to stop them from earning from it. Not by bombing fishermen and farmers though.

100% the case. Please do your research. If military is overthrowing civillian power, it is a banana republic and probably that country has 10 MBTs, 100 technicals and 5 Mig21 jets. When a military is fully resourced with professionals and fully equipped, they rarely show interest in politics.

And yes it is true, before the 3rd Republic and immediately after Abacha and the advent of the 4th Republic, ignorant people with intellectual pretensions would go on national TV and talk about comprehensive demobilization of the military. The prominent one I remember now is Falana but even the technocratic, ex World Bank set were also mouthing the nonsense. Demobilization of the Army to reduce numbers was also seen as the only way to raise finance for equipment.
Now with insurgency and terrorism, all that nonsense is dead. A rider to all these is that you should never allow intellectuals in government. They are too irresponsible and cannot see reality.

Forget the stupid border wall sef, a few hundreds of these sensors and a highly mobile border guard/immigration officers/customs will stop most smuggling and illegal migration.

I stumbled upon something just now and all I can say is that the Army is actually very lazy when it comes to being concerned about the lives of its troops. There are sensors that will detect ambushes kilometers away, military bases can be aware of approaching enemies several kilometers away without anyone leaving the base.

There is an ongoing Jihadi civil war here in Nigeria, JAS recently killed large numbers of ISWAP. It is always sweet to see the terrorists kill themselves.

Unpopular opinion but Buhati actually has very little to do with the current security situation of this country. In fact the foundations were laid 30-40 years ago when successive military administration refused to fund the military due to the fear of coup. Even when democracy was restored, democratically elected presidents refused to do the right thing due to the same reason. In fact it is rumored that OBJ even wanted to downsize the military (imagine how a 50k Nigerian military in its current state would have coped today). Successive administrations allowed the military and paramilitaries to decay for several decades and we are only starting to see the consequences. In fact, the administration that made the most revenue was the worst for the military. In the late 90s and early 2000s,the mopo was the standard instrument for returning peace and stability to troubled zones and deployment time was very short,the police force was functional at that time and the judiciary was still somewhat effective even though these instruments of government were already in a state of rapid decline. Even in the heat of the niger-delta militants crisis, OBJ did very little for the military(he got 12 F7-NIs though and some other minor procurements). In the heat of the insurgency in the North East, GEJ was okay with the usurpation of funds sorely needed by the military. Mind you, the bamditry in the northwest was already gaining momentum since the time of OBJ, it started way before that time but it was still minimal.
And now we expect an incapacitated military to perform a great job with the crisis we are facing.
This doesn't exonerate Buhari from his failures and weaknesses Sha, he could have done a better job and alleviated the situation.

I believe we will be hearing more of this in the not too distant future. The problems and the weak spot in our security architecture are being discussed daily and as we see the most fundamental ones being solved, the other ones will start receiving the spotlight they deserve. Not too long ago, the airforce couldn't boast of 20 aircrafts being operational in their inventory, today, most of their capability gaps are being plugged with solid plans to take care of the rest. Only recently we heard about plans for an alternative funding for the Navy and maritime security receiving support in the national assembly. It is only a matter of time.
