PoliticsYale Honours Okonjo-iweala For Fighting Corruption, Fiscal Transparency by Whynotthetruth(op): 12:23pm On May 19, 2015
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has received an honorary Doctorate degree from Yale University one of the United State of America’s most prestigious institutions of higher learning.

The Minister was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters at Yale’s 2015 Commencement Ceremony in New Haven, Connecticut Monday. She is the second Nigerian in the university’s 314-year history to receive its highest honour after Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka who received an honorary Doctor of Letters in 1980.

Giving out the award, the President of the University Professor Peter Salovey described Okonjo-Iweala as “a brilliant reformer and dedicated public servant.” He said that Minister “has spearheaded efforts to stabilize and grow Nigeria’s economy, battling widespread government corruption and creating greater fiscal transparency and discipline.”

Yale’s honorary doctorate degree is seen globally as a very important honour. According to the institution “those who have received honorary degree are scholars, public servants, Nobel Prize winners and heads of states.

“Collectively, they represent the aspirations of this institution. Yale honorary degree recipients serve as models of excellence and service to our students, to our graduates, to our community and to the world,” the institution says.

As Finance Minister in 2004, Okonjo-Iweala and the economic team that she led helped Nigeria obtain debt relief, wiping out $30 billion of Paris club debt, leading to a tripling of the growth rates.

The second time around as Finance Minister in 2011, Okonjo-Iweala has focused on building solid foundations and institutions critical for the survival and sustenance of the economy. She bravely fought corruption in governance with fierce dedication and unflagging energy.

Okonjo-Iweala was honored alongside the Chair of the Board of Governors of US Federal Reserve System Janet Yellen, world renowned Beninoise Singer and songwriter Angelique Kidjo, University Professor and founding member of the Institute for Comparative Literature and Society at Columbia University Gayatari Chakravorty Spivak, Professor and Director of the Starr Center for Human Genetics at Rockefeller University Jeffrey Michael
Friedman, Inventors and Entrepreneurs Elon Musk and Dean Kamen, etc.

Yale had in the past honored a handful of other Africans such as Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

This is the kind of inequality and injustice that I expect Barcanista, whynotthetruth, knowledgeable and co to fight against given their keen seen of "justice"? If GMB turns around to support this, in spite of his well known view against social injustice, we will also mobilize against his administration. Let us speak truth to power: people are suffering!
1)This reporter is mischievous. There's nothing shocking about something which we have known to exist for long although they lazily chose not to investigate/report it or probably its part of the plot to keep giving Jonathan a bad name. Having noticed their incapacitation in offering good governance hence they must invent all manner of excuses cum blames and heap them on Jonathan administration to take the fall for them...

2)We are in democracy with separation of powers and independence of different arms of government as key. Why would we heap our misgivings of a particular arm on another?...

3)It's in the open that Jonathan administration has reportedly supported budget cut for national assembly and even the executive. Hence some 25% or so cut was accepted. Reason why this notorious reporter and newspaper didn't capture that tells more about their agenda and motive for news such as this...

4)Note that majority of these lawmakers are from the North followed by SouthWest. Hence, you wont be surprised that they are against regionalism. Because the status quo feeds and favours them...

5)If our agitation for regionalism is supported by all and finally granted. Malaise such as these will automatically be wiped out. You don't cure malaria by just taking care of the headache. There are other issues here.

6)I am not against reducing cost of government and governance as it pertains to recurrent expenditure for executive and legislature in the interim. But regionalism should be taken note of and pursued as a way out of lazy system of leadership and parasitic governance.

Indeed, look up my posts. I speak truth to power! not by half, the whole truth! I once said GMB campaign won't be immune to the current epidemic of corruption. That he has sufficient moral fibre to save us from a free fall. I never said he was perfect. As for GEJ, I once said no one was caught with a smoking gun. I presume he is innocent. But his constitutional innocence could not save him from my legitimate reaction to what I experience as a Nigerian. Your experience is different from mine so why should I support a man based on your own experience. My neighbour is a Christian from Chibok. they voted GEJ in 2011 but now the experience of corrupt neglect made them to vote GMB. The choice is not as simple as you think it was. for many of who live close to the ground zero we see corrupt derelection of duty on the part of those who had sworn to protect us. I may be too naive to bother about who stole what where when and how unless what was stolen undermined my security and thereby exposing me to clear and present danger.but I won't blame you if you conveniently juggle the proportion of iniquity between Abacha and GEJ or GMB and GEJ. However, when you are faced with the choice in the context of danger you may think of changing your guards! GEJ was sufficiently warned. The six week military campaign showed that he was not helpless all along. Ok maybe all have sinned or all are corrupt or GEJ is a saint. Whatever! 90% for the rich 10% (budget ratio) for the poor is a recipe for social disaster. I refused to validate the disaster QED.

I wish you guys can bring up issues not persons. I am not going to hold GMB to the standard of any Nigerian leader. GEJ and Abacha? Haba! there are sufficient principles of governance under chapter 2 of our constitution that you can gauge govt performance with. anything short of good governance issues is nothing but childish bickering.
1)I find it very naive that you and your seeming group "who live to ground zero" as you said would abandon your grassroot government and look up to Jonathan that's a central government...Your local government and states government are there for all you desire...

2)Your alluding to six week's military success even with all the explanation from the military on why and how they came about the success... Your hatred for Jonathan won't allow you to see such cogent reasons as plausible...

3)Buhari had and still has no will or morality to fight corruption. Not when he eats and wines with corruption. His campaign funds were funds belonging to different states but were stolen to achieve his personal ambition. Other corrupt persons also donated to him. He's interested in power not in any corruption fight. Darkness cannot fight darkness...He took stolen funds to campaign hence cannot fight those who steal...He's interested only in power....

4)Jonathan is not the problem of chibok. Shettima and borno elders are. Chibok were used as baits to drag Jonathan down. Soon when the centre cannot hold again; lots of truth will emerge. Many questions than answers exist in Chibok.

5)We are looking at the person of buhari for now vis a vis reality and his laundered image used for campaign...

whynotthetruth hear more: the 'whole' truth, "nothing" but the truth. GMB simply afforded Gen Abacha the constitutional presumption of innocence. it is a legal right that he is entitled to. so the burden of proof is on you to prove beyond reasonable doubt. GMB did not exonerate Abacha nor absolve him of other charges against him. But he said after 10 years all these talk should be over if our leaders knew what they were doing. GEJ freed Abacha's men so how did GMB err by his constitutional words. Govt apparatus should not be turned into instrument of cheap blackmail. support me or I will expose you or prosecute you. The argument against GEJ is not that GMB or Abacha were saints, it is impunity in which Nigeria and Nigerians were disappearing. It was not like that under any past leader no matter what. You can give all the excuses in the world but the bulk stopped at GEJ table. what was he afraid of? they threatened to do the right thing by exposing the traitors. but at the end it was easier to keep quiet and lose power to those denigrated for four years. can you beat that?!
Actually, I didn't understand where you were going or what you wanted to achieve with this thesis tongue

1)It's either you don't understand English or you're simply being mischievous and smart by half by trying to read another meaning into this...

2)This statement was made after Obj has retrieved some million dollars from the Abachas...so which evidence do you want againhuh

3)Jonathan did what is known as plea bargain just like Obj did also...otherwise such case and money will remain in court while both parties wait unending any meaningful outcome...Smart people do such and the opportunity cost of this smart cum intelligent strategy is the public/TV conviction that Nigerians enjoy to see...

4)Abacha's wife brought buhari into politics hence buhari sold his conscience for a porridge. The result is that shameless statement of his maybe as part of his gratitude at the expense of integrity and sincerity...

5)Mohammed Abacha was touted as the chief financier of buhari CPC in 2011...Buhari is dirty because you can't wear white to a mud play and come back without stains...

6)Nothing like innocent till proven otherwise by court here because the loot is there for all to see...there's no need for evidence again...

7)Do you have such evidence against Jonathanhuh... Will you grant such reprieve for Jonathan now as you seek for buhari?...Buhari is as clean as Abacha. QED

I have largely avoided this thread. Anyone who believes Abacha was not corrupt must be the greatest Nigerian fool alive. Here's a quick peek into what could have transpired under his regime. Take crude oil sales. He was the sole agent on d buyer and seller side in addition to unilaterally giving commissions on crude sales and then the singular personality that determined what was imported as refined products. Just take the current subsidy debacle and picture 1 man in the centre of everything instead of the myriads of marketers. In just that sector you will understand why the Abacha family will say no matter how poor they get they can never be as poor as Dangote. The family is said to own huge chain of businesses wrongly ascribed to the Lebanese and Chinese concerns. Only insiders can verify such claims. So it all depends on what corruption is. Those generals who assigned juicy oil blocks of the Niger Delta to themselves are equally corrupt. OBJ who made himself Minister of Petroleum for 8 years is also corrupt. The major reason for GEJ being referred to as corrupt, not that he is a saint, is the transparency he introduced. Things are most likely to be reported under GEJ than under OBJ. It is funny some ppl re saying GEJ is the most corrupt Nigerian leadeR. Imagine the dude is yet to even complete his house in Abuja. Well we know certain ppl have to be given a bad name so as to justify the need for a regional shift in power.
Thanks for this post Sir...

Raising 100-150 broilers
I will assume that you already have your pen ready for stocking the said amount of birds that you intend raising so I may not want to include pen construction cost, I will also want to assume that you have already purchased other basic equipment which include your Feeding and drinking equipment which make up your fixed cost, but from my rough estimate of 200 birds which includes variable cost of feed, purchase of D.O.C, medication, vaccination, labor cost as well as miscellaneous expenses it is expected that you should be ready to spend nothing less than #160,000 to raise 200 commercial broiler birds to a mean average weight of 1.8kg. This is probably equitable to an estimate cost of #800 per bird.

As per your second question, from experience i will Advise you go for Abor Acre breed of broilers. They have a good FCR and this will enable you easily attain the desired weight at the right time putting all proper management practices into place. Make sure that they have a good uniformity when collecting them from the Hatchery. You can as well weigh them once they arrive your farm to study their growth rate.
I know you can get Abor Acre from CHI (Ajanla) farms or basically find out from other experienced broiler farmers in your environs.

2)Plz I am a novice in this but hopes to run this farm through an experienced third party...so most abbreviations don't make sense to me...kindly help plzzz...because I desire to be at home with all he says to avoid lots of cheating and shortchanges...

3)We have to construct pens because I have none...help me with an estimate plz Sir...

4)Can you plzz break down the above figure by attaching figures to the variables listed above like vaccination etc...

5)Kindly avoid lumping figures together plz Sir. A little more breaking down will be appreciated...
