Politics / Re: As Nigerians, Can We Ever Witness Stable Electricity In Our Life Time? by Winchman: 4:55pm On Jan 10, 2020 |
crestdevelopers:Well, Pearl Garden, Paradise, Centenary and Queen's Park estates just off G.U Ake Rd all have nearly 24hrs power supply. Rent in those areas aren't as expensive as Ajah in Lagos. You can get a decent 2 bedroom flat in those places for about 500k and slightly higher. I know folks who pay 300k for such apartments but they are residents who moved in when there wasn't even electricity in those places. |

divads:I can tell you that lots of Halliburton, Schlumberger and Baker Hughes folks are on the NNPC EH journey. When I said service companies would chew and spit you out, I was referring to them. There are incredible opportunities to be had with companies like SLB, HAL & BHGE. You get to work in remote places across the world. The pay is great especially as a field engineer, your field bonus which could be a fixed amount or even a percentage of your field ticket makes it so much better. SLB and Baker have training schools in Abu Dhabi and Dubai respectively so that's where you go for your initial training. Advanced training would see you go to the US, usually Houston and Dallas. Maintenance folks at Baker go to Celle, Germany where they have a manufacturing hub. You could be in a pool of engineers that work for this Geomarket which basically means you work in all of West and Central Africa. Then you may become internationally mobile and go way beyond Africa. When you get to that point, you are on the track to the big leagues. Sounds good right? All these good stuff may be truncated the minute oil prices take a nose dive. Headcount reduction is the first cost saving measure they implement. At that point it won't matter if you had been trained in space or worked at some intergalactic wellsite, you could be sent home. It's a cycle of boom and burst. A lot of people want the stability and relatively mild atmosphere of the IOCs and NOCs while others live for the adrenaline of service companies. 27 Likes 2 Shares |

Jarus:That's truly exceptional considering that Shell isn't famous for fast progression. If that your friend was in the multinational service space, he may already be regional VP of a product line. However, service companies will chew and spit you out in a minute regardless of your achievements. IOCs offer better job security but a slower rate of progression. It's a trade off really. |

iammiracle1: In the multinational space, promotions aren't driven by time alone. You have to build specific and measurable competencies before you can breakout and move to another level. Someone may do this faster than another person. You could be cross trained into a different role than that for which you were initially hired or posted abroad for international exposure. These things all come into play when promotion decisions are made. This isn't to say it's a perfect system. However, NNPC may be different given that it's government run. My advice would be to go through the process and not worry too much about how long it might take you to go up the food chain. 4 Likes |

Holywizard, what a moniker ! I do not think you need employers to validate the way you feel about your looks by offering you a job. You have to give yourself that validation by understanding that you are enough. You have to believe that you look fine with your scars. Those scars tell a story of survival and endurance, no matter how difficult things become they remind you that better days lie ahead. That way you are able to build your confidence back up. I'm not unaware of the stares you may get from random strangers but that's because people are intrigued by difference. You can look them square in the eyes till they look away or you can offer them a warm smile and move on depending on how you are feeling at that moment. Now to your question about jobs. There are always going to be jobs we don't qualify for based on physical appearance and our skill sets. I may never work as a physician or a model with a full head of hair. I don't have the skills and I have lost all my hair. However, I have a job I love in an industry that drives Nigeria's economy. Nobody at my job has been hired or turned away because they look a certain way. Your skills are what matter here. You are going to get a job soon enough. 3 Likes |

Emirates is bae...flew LOS-DXB-IAH. The hostesses were courteous, planes were neat. Food was amazing, beef stroganoff tasted like Gordon Ramsay made it. I had an 8hr layover in DXB, got bussed to a Copthorne hotel where there was a buffet style dinner. The downside was you had to pay for internet at the hotel. I will fly them again. 4 Likes |

ChinnyBonn:WES likes to keep the email addresses confidential to protect the integrity of the process. You may want to check to see that your verification request hasn't been received by FUTO before you make a case for an alternate email address. My verification was finished sometime in June 2017, so yeah it's very recent. If you want WES to get back to you in decent time, hit 'em up @WESCANADA on Twitter. I'd suggest you DM them first, it's civil. You can tweet for the whole world to see if they fail to give you the response you need. Records & Statistics is now in SEET. Their response took all of 2 weeks despite the fact that I made it look like Christmas for a few of the guys there. I'm not familiar with IQAS' procedures, didn't use them. Did WES explicitly state they won't evaluate HND alone? You can use the CRS tool to get some comfort feel about your likely CRS points. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/crs-tool.asp 2 Likes |

sutelk:You do not have to write any licensing exam at this time. Like most of us here, all you need do is send your credentials to a credential evaluation body, write IELTS and enter the pool. When you move to Canada, you may decide to write all the exams you want. However, this doesn't rule out the possibility of writing licensing exams before you move if that's how you want to play it. |

ChinnyBonn:You have to go to FUTO to get them to respond to that verification request. WES sends the request by email and regular mail. The guys at the registrar's office at the senate building will help you check. They'd check their register for the hard copy which may not have arrived yet if WES sent it via standard mail. They'd direct you next door to check with the IT guy. He's a really nice fellow, he'd check with the date the email was sent. A potential problem here is WES has different email addresses for FUTO, my verification request wasn't found till I insisted WES sends to an alternate email (WES doesn't share the email addresses). Their director of customer service had to step in when I made a lot of noise on SM. You'll pay 10k at one of the cash offices at the senate building for the verification. You'll take the receipt to the IT guy (at least that's what I did) who'll have a clerk send the request to Records & Statistics where it will be processed and sent back to WES via email. I have written a detailed account of the process so others can know how to navigate it better. It appears there aren't many FUTO people on this journey so information about specifics as they apply to FUTO isn't readily available. @Your husband's certificate issue. You guys can evaluate only his HND. However, if he has his OND statement of result, WES will evaluate that too. You need all the CRS points you can get, there are lots of uncertainties following the June 6th changes and the recent spike in CRS cutoff. 3 Likes 1 Share |

bigbroda:Hello, I think all you need do is go to Uniport and pay the required fees so they can verify your credentials. Nigerian schools are money making, corrupt enclaves. You should tweet something cold and shocking at WES for waiting for your prompt before they gave you that information. I'm tweeting up a storm currently and they are hastening things up a bit. Do you know when they sent the verification request to your school? Mine was sent on the 25th of March, yet FUTO claims they haven't received it yet. 2 Likes |

It really feels good to see perfume addicts here. I used to think I was the only one with this addiction. My favourite perfumes right now are V&R Spicebomb and Bvlgari Man In Black. They are easily the best smelling fragrances for the sophisticated man. Since am an addict, I will go ahead and list all the perfumes I currently own.... Bvlgari Man Extreme, Lalique Encre Noir, Dior Homme and Grey Flannel by Geoffrey Beene. I generally buy my perfumes in Naija, they are cheaper here..don't know why. I trust the shop where I buy, I always check with my barcode scanner app. If you are ever in Abu Dhabi, you should go to Hamdan Centre or Medinat Zayyed, they have really affordable tester bottles and normal retail bottles. In the US, you could just raid all the Ross stores you can find. 3 Likes |

arinola2:You could get your account statement from the time you were a corper. Please note that you may have to go through a longer processing time when you claim points from NYSC experience as I think it falls under government employment. A lot of people on this forum have had that issue. 1 Like 1 Share |

sammyacbxyz:See, you really don't have much of a problem. You clearly have good English language skills as your scores are not exactly mediocre. I think you need a bit more work in Reading, it's something you can do. That test is full of traps to get you to falter, watch out for them and you'll be fine. You could apply for an EOR but am not sure that will help. This is because your Reading may have been already rechecked due to the wide gap between it and other scores. So, your result may be unchanged after EOR. Please don't despair,IELTS isn't out to get you. |

Does anyone know someone who went to FUTO and has completed their ECA with WES? WES just received my documents, I reckon they will want to verify. So I need to understand how they communicate with FUTO. E-mail, courier, what? I need to know who to follow up with in that school immediately WES requests for verification. *Heads up* If you are having difficulty getting WES to respond to you, tweet at them. 1 Like |

Hello great people, so my IELTS score just got in L 8.5 R 7.5 W 7.0 S 8.0. I am very shocked by the Reading score as I thought I had aced it and was going to get a perfect 9. Writing is a different ballgame, in hindsight I noticed I didn't complete all the tasks as I didn't describe my apartment which was one of the three requirements of the writing task. However, I think 7 is too low for the essay I wrote. I want to apply for a remark of the Reading and Writing parts. I know chances of getting a higher band in Reading is slim, since it's majorly objective type answers. I'm almost certain, I can get something higher in Writing. However, all I can get from all that trouble given perfect IELTS scores is an additional 6 CRS points. That will move me from 419 to 425(turns out being in your 30's isn't such a good thing ). Given all these facts, do you guys think I should petition for a remark? Should I just suck it up and rewrite or just wait and hope CRS scores fall to 419 and below? |
Career / Re: How Can I Get My Salary Increased by Winchman: 9:40am On Apr 06, 2017 |
The advice most of you have given are insensitive and does nothing to help his situation. A lot of Nigerian owned companies are unstructured and dysfunctional. They really don't care how relevant or indispensable you think you are, they can hire the next guy with same skill sets as you or even better. However, that isn't enough reason to stay in a place where you are underpaid and treated like scum. @OP you need to take a critical look at your appointment letter,if it says you ought to be confirmed after 6 months of probation and you have done 6 months already, then talk to HR or whoever is responsible for such matters in your organisation. What I have learned about bosses is they don't want to have conversations or negotiations that hurt their chances at climbing the corporate ladder. If they can get you to work for free, they will. Your HOD may not want to ask management for a raise on your behalf because he may be negotiating one for himself or he wants a fat bonus as reward for cost cutting. That additional couple of tens or hundreds of thousands that you could earn may undercut his bonus, nobody wants that. I just got a raise myself, believe me the path was tortuous but well worth it. When I spoke to my boss to thank him for the role he played in that, he said I deserved the raise and congratulated me for the amazing work I do. Amazing work ehh? Yet no one felt I deserved a raise until I pushed for it. The lesson here is, make a great case for a raise and you will get it. Do not be swayed by the band singing sad unemployment tunes, people are still getting hired. 3 Likes |

Hey guys, I have been a ghost follower who enjoyed every bit of the information I got here. I got into the Geology programme at Freiburg. I currently do not have all the money I need for the blocked account so I want to explore the sponsorship letter route. However am worried that I would be required to show proof of relationship to my sponsor. The guy who has agreed to get me the letter is not related to me, would this be a problem? I do not want to mess up up my records with claims of relationship I can't prove. Do German schools defer admissions? My programme only admits for winter semester. I look forward to your incisive responses. |
