It has emerged that a meeting of aggrieved members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was held on Wednesday where the participants weighed several aptions, with majority backing the idea of a mass defection from the ruling party.

The meeting was attended by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, among other chieftains of the APC.

A statement yesterday by the chairman of the nPDP, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, said the meeting was called to intimate members on the outcome of an earlier meeting with the leadership of the APC.

Baraje and other members of the nPDP on Monday met with APC stakeholders over allegation of marginalization against in the ruling party.

The group, in April, demanded to meet with officials of the ruling party to discuss their grievances and expectations from the APC and the Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

“Following this development, the party invited us and we honoured their invitation for a meeting. We met with the leadership of the party last week, during which we resolved to report the outcome of our meeting to our members and stakeholders before arriving at any decision or proceeding with the next phase of discussions or actions with the APC and government,” Baraje said in the statement.

But on the list of the nPDP members at the Wednesday meeting provided by Baraje were names of political office holders that were never part of the nPDP or its parent party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), checks by Daily Trust on Sunday showed.

One of those in attendance at the meeting said last night that the meeting was not restricted to the members of the nPDP block in the APC alone as other ‘like-minds’ also attended.

As part of the outcome, it was learnt, there is the likelihood that the affected members would leave the party in en masse, Daily Trust on Sunday has learnt.

The source, who is a lawmaker, said they discussed issues relating to how some of them were treated during the last congresses of the party and the way forward.

The lawmaker, who was never part of the nPDP, said they may leave the party if no concrete action was taken to address their grievances.

The meeting was well attended, with some governors who could not make it sending their apologies, the source said.

“I was at the meeting as a like-mind, not as a member of the nPDP because I was never part of them. We felt that so many things are going wrong in the party. Most members of the nPDP are not well treated.

“Look at what they are doing to Dino Melaye, who is an APC senator. Even during the PDP era, nobody did such a thing to anybody. The police would drag a senator who suffered for the party on the ground and no action was taken.

“Again, if you look at the congresses held, many nPDP members were sidelined, so they need justice. But the ultimate decision taken is to give the party some time to see if they would address the issues. If they don’t, then we’ll have no option than to leave,” the source said.

Asked which party they would join in the event that their grievances are not addressed, the source said no decision was taken on that.“We all worked for the APC and we should be treated equally; that’s what we are saying,” the lawmaker added.

Another lawmaker, who is a member of the nPDP, confirmed that the meeting was for like-minds as other members also attended.

Another source, who was at the meeting, said the tone was set by the Senate president who opened the floor by speaking about the plight of the members of the nPDP in the APC.

The source said: “After Saraki spoke, he asked us what would be our next step. We told him that we thought the meeting was convened for us to pull out of the APC.”

The senator said, at the end of the meeting, they resolved to pick one of two options.

“One of the two options supported by the majority was the immediate pulling out of the APC. Almost everybody who attended the meeting supported this option.

“But the issue now is that we must forestall the repeat of what happened to us when we joined the APC. Most of the speakers said we must have concrete agreements between us and the party that we will cross to,” he said.

The second option was for them to remain in the APC and continue to consult and strategise, adding, however, that it did not go down well with majority of the aggrieved members in attendance.

“This last option was not supported by many of us. The first option was the one that majority of us supported. The meeting was well attended by almost all members of the nPDP from across the country,” he said.

Asked to name those who attended the meeting, the source who spoke after seeing the statement issued by Baraje said: “All the names listed in the statement were in attendance, but Tambuwal was just a listener at the meeting. He didn’t say anything.”

Daily Trust on Sunday gathered that the meeting set up three committees to advise it on the next line of action to take.

“The first committee has been tasked to articulate the grievances of those who attended the meeting, including nPDP members and many others that joined much later but could not be fully accommodated, a source said, adding, “The committee has been directed to look at the relationship with the APC and the presidency; how they were shoved aside by the current leadership and the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari to fully resolve the problem,” the source said.

“The second committee was tasked to look at the state of the nation, including the economy and others. They were also asked to aggregate the political strength of aggrieved members in their states; the mass of people they could go along with in the event they would leave the party.

“The third committee is expected to shop for a strong political party they could join as a group so that they could negotiate from the position of strength,” he said.

Another source said the aggrieved members were already in talks with the PDP and ADC.

“Many of those that attended Wednesday’s meeting strongly feel that PDP is the party to join because Nigerians know it very well and it has structures all over.

“But the condition for joining the PDP is that the name should be changed. They want the letter ‘A’ to precede PDP so that the party would now be called ‘APDP’, and this is for two reasons. The first is to enable the party appear on top of the ballot paper so that Nigerians would find it easier to trace it. The PDP is down in the ballot; and remember that we have about 68 political parties now.

“The second reason is that in the event the ADC agrees to merge with the PDP, its first letter ‘A’ which stands for Africa that would be adopted,” he said.

“Even though the aggrieved legislators said in their communiqué that they would not leave the APC, that is not the actual case,” a source close to one of the aggrieved senators, said.

“Yes they would remain if their grievances are met, which is very unlikely because in most instances, it means that Buhari would tame governors in favour of legislators and others. The conceivable option is to leave the party. I can assure you that at present, at least 20 senators and no fewer than 100 members of the House of Representatives are set to go.

“And there would be a band wagon effect, meaning that more legislators would leave in the coming months ahead of party primaries in order to actualise their dreams.

“As things stand, with the exception of very few, many senators and reps have lost out the battle to their governors in their states after the congresses, and there are others, especially ex-governors who might likely leave despite the fact that they are in control of the APC in their states. They have security a report that the EFCC will not spare them immediately after the election,” he said.

The meeting was well attended by members of the nPDP, including serving and former governors, senators, members of the House of Representatives and other aggrieved APC stakeholders, Baraje said in the statement.

A source close to Dogara confirmed that the Speaker attended the meeting.

Dogara has been having a running battle with the Bauchi State Governor Mohammed Abubakar.

Dogara did not attend any of the APC congresses held in the state.

Prior to the state congress held last week, he and other notable personalities such as Senator Isa Hamma Misau and Nazif Gamawa approached a court to stop the congress.

Contacted, the special adviser to Saraki on media and publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, said he was not aware of any meeting between his principal and other members of the APC.

“I do not know anything about the meeting. You said a statement had been issued, why can’t you stick to it?” Olaniyonu said in a phone interview.

All that Fayose and PDP needs to do is to remind Ekiti people what the APC publicity secretary in Ekiti, Kemi Olaleye, said some months ago that the APC will reverse the anti-grazing law that was enacted to protect the state's citizens from killer herdsmen if APC comes to power, and promising to give grazing land to herdsmen. The APC has promised to create cattle colonies in Ekiti when the win the election. Just imagine that?? That alone is enough to remind the Ekiti people of the evil APC Bullhari ass-lickers are planning for them. APC does not love Ekiti people and must be outrightly rejected by the good people of Ekiti for their own safety and security.

The Nigerian police said they have smashed two gun running and arms dealing ring and a gang of robbers and kidnappers in the Benue-Taraba axis, making 11 arrests.

Among the suspects arrested was one Miracle Emmanuel, a 27 year-old gun dealer from Anambra, based in Takum, Taraba state. With his three-man gang, the police found five Ak-47 rifles, along with other ammunitions.

Police said they recovered in total 10 AK 47 rifles and two Beretta pistols from the 11 suspects paraded today at the Benue police headquarters in Makurdi and claimed the arrests were a major breakthrough in stopping the incessant killing of innocent people in the Middle Belt states of Benue, Taraba and Nasarawa.

In Benue state, Morris Ashwe, 36 years old from Mbajima Village Katsina Ala LGA, was the sole armourer arrested. He was accused of supplying arms to the wanted criminal kingpin, Terwase Akwaza a.k.a Ghana.

According to Jimoh Moshood, Ashwe was found in possession of five AK 47 rifles, 238 AK47 bullets, 40 Smoke Grenade Canisters and 79 LAR Rifle bullets.

The busted gun dealing gang in Taraba state comprised Takum-based Kabiru Idris, 43, Miracle Emmanuel from Anambra state, said to be a principal suspect and gang leader. Also arrested was Husseini Safiyanu, also from Taraba.

Police said they found five AK47 Rifles with the Taraba gang, along with 13 AK 47 magazines and 83 bullets.

The Police spokesman also said a seven-man robbery and kidnapping gang was arrested in Benue, along with two Beretta pistols. The gang was on its way to kidnap a prominent person in Makurdi, the state capital.

Members of the gang were identified as Emmanuel Ushehemba Kwembe, 28, Achir Gabriel, 30, all from Ushongo LGA, Sekad Uver, 28, from Koshisha LGA Benue State and Ordure Fada, 22, from Kwande LGA.

Others arrested were Stephen Jirgba 18, from Vande kya LGA, Peter Lorham, 24, from Kinshisha LGA and Lorhemen Akwambe 35, who hails from Guma LGA.

“The renewed strategies adopted by the Nigeria Police Force to stop the incessant killings of innocent Nigerians and curtail the proliferation of firearms across the country, most especially in the North-Central States have been yielding positive results”, the police spokesman said.

“The IGP Intelligence Response Team and the Police Special Forces mandated by the IGP to work with Benue, Nasarawa and Taraba State Commands, in the last two weeks arrested the 11 suspects mentioned above within Benue and Taraba States and recovered from them were Ten (10) AK47 Rifles and other assorted firearms and ammunition.

” In the first two cases, the suspects confessed to have been responsible for supply of AK47 rifles and other firearms and ammunition to armed bandits, militias, and criminal herdsmen/farmers in Benue and Taraba States.

” The first suspect, Morris Ashwe confessed and admitted to have been supplying firearms and ammunition to the notorious and most wanted vicious and notorious gang leader of militia, murderers and kidnappers Terwase Akwaza aka Ghana.

Akwaza was declared wanted by the Nigeria Police Force last year March over the killings of many innocent persons at Zaki Biam and the wanton destruction of properties worth Millions of Naira.

He is also wanted for other violent crimes such as the killing of Mr. Deneen Igbana, the Special Adviser on Security to the Governor of Benue State.

The police said the Kabiru Idris gang confessed to have been supplying AK47 rifles and other firearms and ammunition to militia groups, armed bandits and other criminals in Taraba and Benue States, who they admitted have been attacking and killing innocent people in villages in Taraba and Benue States.

As for the kidnappers, whose mission was aborted, the police said their arrest was made possible from intelligence gathered by the IGP Intelligence Response Team.

The police said the gangsters have admitted to have been responsible for several kidnappings in Benue, Taraba and Some part of Nasarawa State in the recent past.

“Investigation is being strengthened to arrest other suspects at large. All suspects will be arraigned in court on completion of investigation.

”The deployment of additional 15 Police mobile Force units to augment the strength of the Benue State Police Command has beefed-up security in the State and help in sustaining the peace that have been restored to the state”, Moshood said.

Aguleri and Umueri communities in Anambra East local government area were engaged in communal war between 1995 and 2002 which claimed hundreds of lives.

But on May 1 when workers were busy reviewing labour issues, the traditional rulers of the two communities, their chiefs and town unions’ leadership were at Otuocha, the local government headquarters, trying to resolve the land dispute between them in the presence of Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Umar Garba.

Ahead of the meeting, Garba had asked the Aguleri and Umueri communities to form a peace committee. The peace committee had eight persons on each side. During a brief meeting inside the council secretariat with the two traditional rulers, Eze Christopher Idigo of Aguleri and Igwe Ben Emeka of Umueri, as well as their President Generals and chiefs, the CP informed them that before the renaming of Umuleri to Umueri after its communal war with Aguleri, the two communities were globally known for peace. He was optimistic that God will use him to make peace between Umueri and Aguleri.


Land as bone of contention

Everybody then drove to the disputed Aguakor land. On arrival, representatives of each of the communities struggled to be heard first. That brought tension which Garba brought under control. The CP expressed worry that Aguleri fought Umueri over the land rather than report to government since the land had been given to government.

The team moved to the boundary at Ohia Aruru where the representatives of Aguleri and Umueri, Godwin Nwazekwu and Mr Chike Odili respectively, presented conflicting versions of the issues at stake, leading to an altercation. Umar asked the peace committee to include a neutral person to serve as tie breaker during deliberations.

The CP told Sunday Vanguard, “There will be peace. God is using us to bring peace between Aguleri and Umueri. There is a committee for peace and there must be peace. I am warning that any person that feels he must create trouble, we will go after that person and deal with him”. Also speaking, Igwe Aguleri, Eze Idigo, appealed to Garba to ensure that only those with calm disposition were allowed in the peace committee to guarantee compromises that will bring peace to the two communities.

On his part, the Igwe Umueri, Igwe Emeka, noted that the CP really wanted to restore peace in the two communities, but said there was still tension over the disputed land that had been donated to government. According to him, sacrifices were needed to ensure peace between Aguleri and Umueri.

Meanwhile, Umueri President General, Pius Okonkwo, in an interview, told Sunday Vanguard that his community was not the aggressor in the communal crisis, calling for the implementation of the White Paper on the Justice Nweze Commission of Inquiry which looked into the matter in 1995, the implementation of a 1977 judgment by Justice P Nnaemeka Agu on the Aguakor land which, according to him, was in Umueri favour and the Supreme Court judgment of 1984.


New attacks

Alleged incursion into the disputed land by some Aguleri natives had sparked fresh trouble in the area following which the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in the state allegedly arrested a 70-year-old man, while declaring four others wanted.

Umueri, in fact, wrote a petition to CP Garba, claiming that some people from Aguleri were trespassing on the land by removing sign posts hoisted there and calling for his intervention.

The President General of Umueri General Assembly, Hon Pius Okonkwo, and his Secretary General, Mr. Samuel Mbukwesili, who signed the petition, complained of the breach of police instructions directing the two communities to maintain the peace. The petition read, in part: “May it be recalled that we were invited to your office on the 23rd day of March, 2018 over the trespass on Aguakor Umueri land by Aguleri people. And in submission and respect to your office, we honoured the invitation.

“At the meeting, which was attended by representatives of both communities, you directed that all the newly erected sign posts on the said land be removed. Contrary to your directives, the Aguleri people reluctantly removed the sign posts on the 25th day of March, 2018.

“In defiance to your directives and prior to their removal of the sign posts, the Aguleri people, with some armed people, commenced the erection of two permanent structures on the land and the structures are being erected in the night and they are heavily armed in order to instigate and provoke inter-communal crisis between the two communities.

“Suffice it to bring to your notice that these illegal activities by the Aguleri people pose serious threat to the lives of Umueri indigenes and, if not stopped, may breach public peace and cause inter-communal crisis between the two communities.

“We, therefore, implore you to use your good office to ensure that they remove the two structures erected by them in defiance to your instructions; desist from embarking on further activities on the said land; as well as ensure that Umueri sign posts removed and seized be returned to us “We also implore the CP to assign a police patrol team to the area for maintenance of law and order.”

However, the President General of Aguleri Town Union, Mr. Mike Ejoor, said his community had no issue with Umueri, saying that what might be happening in the area could be land dispute between families. He said: “Since the end of the 1995-2002 communal crisis, we have not had any crisis with Umueri. Aguleri, as a community, has no common land, but it is not unusual for families that have common boundary to have misunderstanding over land.

“For instance, my family has a boundary with Umueri and, if there is any land dispute in the area, it is between the two families”. Okonkwo confirmed the petition and lamented why the Aguleri should abuse the privilege of having the state governor from its community even as he sued for peace.


Umueri asks Obiano to intervene

Meanwhile, Umueri people appealed to Governor Willie Obiano to use his good office to end the communal crisis. Elders from Umueri, led by the Assistant Secretary, Umueri General Assembly, Mr Edwin Obigwe, addressed a press conference at Xandas Lounge, Awka. Obigwe, flanked by the National President, Umueri Youths, Ambassador Chibuzor Ekwenye, Mr Amechi Ajide, the Chairman of the embattled village as well as Comrade Chike Odili , immediate past Caretaker Committee Chairman, among others, said he spoke on behalf of Okonkwo, the President-General, Umueri General Assembly.

His words: “Our message is very simple: Umueri people want peace. We do not want to fight wars with any of our neigbours. “We appeal to the governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, who hails from Aguleri, to use this opportunity of being at the helm of affairs in our state to put in place the machinery for achieving genuine peace between Aguleri and Umueri. ‘’This appeal to Gov. Willie Obiano is made even as we hear from some quarters that he is actually the person instigating his people of Aguleri to cash in upon this ‘golden opportunity’ provided by his stint to acquire as much of Umueri land as possible. We do not want to believe this story, but we are also worried that his people are spoiling for war.

‘’We call on the Anambra government to quickly implement the recommendations contained in the White Paper issued by government after the infamous 1995-2002 hostilities between our two communities. The said recommendations are quite sound and their implementation will, no doubt, bring total peace to our beleaguered area.

“Aguleri-Umueri land dispute dates back to the pre-independence era. The matter was heard at the Privy Council, United Kingdom during the colonial period. ‘’In 1984, the Supreme Court of Nigeria ruled that neither Aguleri nor Umueri could provide enough evidence to prove she had exclusive ownership of Otu-Ocha land which had been the main subject of litigation between our two communities.

“The court went further to direct that, in the circumstances, each community should hold on to that part of Otu-Ocha and adjoining areas where she had traditionally and originally held sway. ‘’Umueri community had thought that with that Supreme Court verdict, peace would prevail in our area between us and our neigbour. But this has not been the case.

“Apart from some relatively minor skirmishes, in 1995, Aguleri, claiming that an Umueri man had trespassed on a portion of their land along the Umueri-Onitsha Expressway, near Umueri Technical School, not only attacked, killed and maimed some workers on the controversial site, but also went beyond that to invade the entire Umueri community, killing innocent citizens, burning houses, private and public, and even churches.

‘’As if the 1995 was a child play, in 1999, there was the mother of all wars between Aguleri and Umueri. Needless to re-state here the quantum of losses (in persons, buildings, etc) which Umueri suffered from the 1999 hostilities. The decrepit houses, some of which were deliberately destroyed by dynamite, are still dotting Umueri landscape till today. For instance, St Gabriel’s Anglican Church, Umueri, the destruction of which was bemoaned by a bewildered visiting President Olusegun Obasanjo (as he then was), had to be re-built from the scratch. Up until now, our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Umueri, destroyed during this infamous brouhaha, is still to be re-roofed; only the Rev Father’s residence has been rebuilt completely. Enough of our ugly past!”

On the latest confrontation, Obigwe informed: ‘’Less than a month ago, some Aguleri natives invaded Ovelle’s Road (Ezi Ovelle) area of Umueri, an area which boundary demarcation was done between our forefathers and Aguleri people. They destroyed several houses and fences in their characteristic manner and wounded Umueri people. Umueri swiftly reported that incident at Otu-Ocha Police Station, and also contacted the leadership of Aguleri with a view to expressing our amazement and receiving the necessary apology from Aguleri.

“Not only did that apology come, some sincere, God- fearing Aguleri people, under the aegis of Urnuiyi family and led by Bishop Anenechukwu Ifediorah, also told their fellow Aguleri people, in unequivocal terms, that the Ezi Ovelle axis is clearly Umueri land. ‘’That sincere declaration did not go down well with some Aguleri natives who threatened their lives and, when they escaped, they burnt their houses.

‘’Let me also state here that the recent annexation of Umueri is not restricted to Ezi Ovelle Road axis. Other flashpoints are the land near the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Office, Otu-Ocha; the road leading to Umueze Anam (near INEC) which is clearly an Umueri area and the Dabawu area where an Umueri shrine has been kept over the centuries. Recently, the premises of Dabawu was cleared by Umueri (Ugume Umueri village specifically), preparatory to receiving a visitor there, only for Okpu villagers of Aguleri to rush and plant crops there”.

In the 1995 – 2002 war, killings were the order of the day before then President Olusegun Obasanjo administration brought it to an end after inviting the leaders of the three communities of Aguleri, Umueri and Umuoba Anam to Abuja for a meeting.


Reaction

Though the state government has not officially reacted over the new Umueri/Aguleri crisis, the deputy governor, Dr Nkem Okeke, has called for peaceful coexistence in Anambra. Speaking at the meeting between Awba Ofemili in Awka North of Anambra and Ibite-Olo of Ezeagu, Enugu State, which took place at Enugu, Okeke called for peaceful coexistence between the people of the two states. He counselled against undue attachment to land.

Former Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Chief Nduka Eya has described the explosion which occurred at the Ukehe, Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area country home of Chief Nnia Nwodo as an indication of the rascality and desperation of some Igbo youths who lack respect or honour for dignity.

Chief Eya said although the explosion also showed the ‘quantum of insecurity in the country,’ he attributed it to some Igbo youths who he said wanted to introduce strange happenings in Igbo land.

Daily Trust recalls that an explosion occurred at the residence of Nwodo in his Ukehe community, Enugu State about 9.00am on Sunday when a device was reportedly hurled over the fence into the premises by an unknown person. Similar incident was recorded at the Ohanaeze Secretariat at GRA, Enugu few years back during the tail-end of Chief Ewo Gary Igariwey as Ohanaeze President General.

Enugu State Police Command described the explosion at Nwodo’s residence as minor, insisting that it affected two windows in one of the houses in the compound. Presidential elections are always predictable in Nigeria. There is no surprises here. Just wait till PDP announces their candidate, then you will surely know, Buhari is still very popular.
