PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari is expected to host Governor Samuel and other political leaders from Benue State on Monday with an allegation of the state government arming militia top of the agenda.

The meeting is called to discuss the killings allegedly perpetrated by Fulani herdsmen in the state.

According to a top Presidency source who did not want to be named, the meeting is coming in the aftermath of the recent violent attacks on communities in Benue State.

The source informed that it would comprehensively address the security challenges facing the state.

The Presidency source pointed out that the urgent meeting was inevitable because of the frequency and scale of such violence and the reactions that have trailed the incidents.



It said President Buhari was embarrassed by the large-scale loss of lives caused by such repeated violence against innocent people.

The source confirmed that the discussions at the meeting will focus on the issues of the Fulani herdsmen, the alleged arming, training and financing of militia groups by some state governments.

According to the Presidency source, some of the armed militia suspect arrested recently had confessed to being armed by the Benue State government which it observed had added a new twist to the crisis.

It said the Presidency may seek an explanation about this from the Governor with a view to getting at the root of the state’s security challenge.

In compliance to Governor Yahaya Bello’s directive that traditional rulers in Kogi state should accommodate Fulani men in their councils and communities as indigenes, the Obadofin of Kabba, Oba Michael Yusuf has inaugurated a 13-man committee to be in charge of the implementation of the directive.

Inaugurating the committee in his palace, Oba Michael Yusuf said the committee has in its possession forms to be given to the Chairman of Miyeti Allah, Alh Ibrahim Sheidu who will in turn give to his member for registration.

The forms, according to the monarch, would help the community access all required information about the herdsmen and subsequently indigenalised them.

He disclosed further that it is part of the committee’s responsibility to ensure peace between the community and the herdsmen when the need arises.

Oba Yusuf who said the committee members are to meet fortnightly, urged the herdsmen to always report to the committee whenever farmers offend them rather than resort to violence.

He noted that it is not in all cases that the Fulanis are guilty but might have been provoked by the action of the farmers.

Members of the committee are: Chief Paul Olurinjon (Chairman), Chief Obatoke Oloruntoba (recording secretary), P/C Aiyedun Joseph (Police Rep), Moses Amoo (DSS Rep), Alh Ibrahim Sheidu (Miyeti Allah’s Head in Kabba).

Other members are Chiefs Bello Obahawo, Samuel Ojutalayo, Ayodele Okono, Ogedengbe Obatoweshe, Obapinwo Fadile, Arokoyo Bolaji, Abiodun Obafegbewo and Obamowe Olojo.

Gov. Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun on Monday disclosed that the state was losing between N3 billion and N5 billion as revenue monthly from haphazard toll collection.

The governor said this at the inauguration of harmonisation of haulage revenue collection in state, in Abeokuta.

The event, with the theme: “Harmonisation Eradicating Multiplicity in Haulage Revenue Collection’, was attended by top officials of security agencies, stakeholders in transport and haulage sector.

Also in attendance were chairmen of local governments and local council development authorities in the state.
Mr. Amosun lamented the huge loss of revenue by the state due to unorganised toll revenue collection, saying the new scheme would address the identified inadequacies of the former method.

He added that the harmonisation would also block revenue leakages and eradicate printing and issuing of fake toll tickets by some contractors.

According to Mr. Amosun, the new revenue scheme will ensure that the toll posts being operated by local governments, agencies and LCDAs, no longer exist.
He declared that the state could no longer tolerate illegal ways of toll collection.

The governor further explained that the new scheme, apart from eradicating touting at the designated toll points across the state, would be in compliant with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police that all road blocks should be dismantled.

“It is important to note that haulage collection should ordinarily come under the purview of the civil service structure. But, we decide to contract the collection to our people.

“Our aim was to create more openings through which we could empower more people.

“But, I must confess that our intervention was grossly misconstrued and largely abused by majority of the participants.

“We find out that a large chunk of generated revenue was not remitted to government and some of the operators have gone beyond the brief of the delegated authority.

“As a government, we cannot allow such abuse which has led to major revenue loss and extortion of our people,’’ he said.

He hinted that harmonised tickets will henceforth be issued by the state government, while erection of signposts, provision of reflective jackets and issuance of security code, will also be put in place to make the scheme a success.

The governor warned that anyone found operating illegal toll points would be prosecuted and assured that the scheme would not lead to job loss, but would create more fundamental, dignifying and viable jobs for the citizens.

“Let it be known that any individual or group of persons found to be collecting haulage revenue without due approval will not only be arrested but made to face the full wrath of the law. To be fore-warned is to be fore-armed,’’ he said.

He said that a town hall meeting would soon be organised, to further intimate the stakeholders and members of the public on the new scheme, expressing optimism it would reverse the trend of huge revenue loss.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Finance, Adewale Oshinowo, said the scheme was put together to end the haphazard way of collecting streams of revenues due to the government from all the 63 toll points and control posts.

Mr. Oshinowo added that to achieve the desired result, a technical committee comprising the officials of the ministries of finance, commerce and industry, agriculture, forestry and environment, was set up to fashion out a modern method of collecting revenue.

FCT Minister Malam Bello Muhammad has said that residents of the territory may have to pay for infrastructure as government could no longer continue to fund it.

Muhammad said this while on an inspection tour of ongoing road projects by the FCT, being executed by Gilmort Engineering Ltd. on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said, tremendous amounts are needed for the provision of infrastructure in many of the districts of the FCT.

According to him, while it was possible in the past to develop the FCT, the reality now is that to develop each plot now requires tremendous amount of resources.

“I think it is just a matter of time, we will have no option but to ensure that every plot has to pay for itself.

” If you look at it on a plot to plot basis the cost of infrastructure for a plot is so high and if you look at what people pay to government it is so negligible,” he said.

According to him, 30 years ago when Abuja was created and people were encouraged to come in, it made a lot of sense for government to provide infrastructure.

Muhammad said this was because infrastructure had not matched the level of development, adding that this had to be so because government could no longer fund infrastructure, while allocating plot for free.

According to him, this is something that requires “all of us to really sit down as stakeholders and not just the FCT administration”.

He stated that if residents of FCT craved for first class infrastructure, they have to be willing to pay for it.

“That is why the development of the city without given due cognisance to funding and providing for infrastructure does not help the city.

” That is why you see that the city has so many districts with 100 per cent houses without infrastructure,” he said.

He commended the contractor for doing a good job based on the level of work on ground.

Mr Ben Simon, Chief Engineer, Gilmor Engineering Ltd said the company is determined to complete the project in 20 months.

He said that Phase I Guzape District HD has been completed and the company was working hard to ensure the completion of Phase II.

The minister visited Guzape and Jahi districts of the FCT.

A first class Nigerian graduate, who had been unemployed for two years since she left the university, has been offered employment after PREMIUM TIMES published a report on her.

Twenty-two-year-old Odufuwa Sola had almost given up and started learning tailoring at Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, before the job offer came.

The Physics Electronics graduate from the Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo State, took to Twitter in October to beg people to help her out, after her search for a job yielded no result.

Ms. Sola did not just make a first class but was the best graduating student in the university for that year with a 4.83 G.P.A. She had the honour of delivering a valedictory speech in the school.

Ms. Sola’s story underscored the unemployment crisis in the oil-rich Nigeria which is one of the largest economies in Africa.

Immediately the story was published, Adamu Garba, the CEO of IPI Solution Ltd, an IT firm with offices in Lagos and Abuja, reached out to Ms. Sola via Twitter and within days she was offered an employment in project development and IT solutions after a job interview. She has also been enrolled in a mentorship scheme by the company.

Ms. Sola is trying to settle down on her new job and a new life in Lagos.

“It’s actually a different field from what I learnt in school,” she said. “It’s all about programming.

“The company has done well by providing me with a new laptop, eBooks, and videos to aid my transition into the IT world.

“And I have colleagues around me who are always willing and ready to help. It’s challenging but I know with time I will adjust,” she said.

Ms. Sola said she loves her new job and that the pay was good for a start.

She thanked PREMIUM TIMES for doing a story on her and also thanked her new boss, Mr. Garba, for giving her the opportunity to work in the IT company.

Christopher Olowokere, the Head of Physics with Electronics department, Ajayi Crowther University, said he was aware that Ms. Sola had been offered a job. He expressed delight over it and also thanked the newspaper for the story.

The CEO of IPI Solution Ltd, Mr. Garba, who said he was moved by Ms. Sola’s story, said he picked her Twitter handle from the PREMIUM TIMES report.

“I just sent a Twitter message to her requesting to know if she was available for a job interview. She came in for the interview, she displayed a lot of potentials. She is an intelligent person, we said let’s give her the opportunity to start work immediately,” said Mr. Garba.

Mr. Garba said Ms. Sola now has a great opportunity for a promising career since “the future of the world’s economy is dependent on IT”.

He blamed Nigeria’s worsening unemployment situation on the government and the university system.

“The Nigerian universities do not teach the students how to apply knowledge,” he said, adding that Nigeria could create millions of jobs if only the government was willing to explore the potentials available in IT.

“These five companies, Facebook, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Apple combined have about $3.6 trillion in their pool.

“As I’m talking to you, Apples’ earnings now is twice bigger than Nigeria’s GDP. And this is a company of 66,000 staff, while Nigeria has more than 186 million people.

“What is the government doing to empower the local IT guys?” Mr. Garba said, while also advising the government regulatory agencies to stop implementing policies that block multinational IT companies from coming in to play big roles in the Nigerian market.

PREMIUM TIMES asked Ms. Sola about the lessons she has learnt from what has happened.

“I have learnt that I need to come out of my comfort zone, try something new, and take risks.

“There is also this Yoruba adage that says, ‘When you have a problem and you keep it to yourself and don’t share it with others, at times it won’t get solved,’” she said.

The Anti-Kidnapping unit of the Imo State Police Command has arrested a couple, Ifeanyi Anyanwu and Amarachi Ugorji, for allegedly stealing and selling a two-year-old boy, Ikechukwu Nwachukwu, for N500,000.

The couple allegedly stole the child on August 28 from his parents in Umuozu-Uguiri in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of the state.

PUNCH Metro, however, learnt that prior to the incident, Anyanwu and Ugorji had sold their first child on credit to a man in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Andrew Enwerem, during a parade on Wednesday, said in the latest incident, the couple kidnapped and sold Nwachukwu for N500,000 to one Ifeanyinwa Duru.

Duru was said to have resold the boy to one Mrs. Chidinma Emmanuel, for N700,000.

The police spokesperson, who described the development as worrisome, said the couple, Duru and Emmanuel were nabbed in Aba, Abia State, adding that the child was rescued unhurt.

Enwerem said, “On August 28, 2017, Ifeanyi Anyanwu, 23; and Amarachi Ugorji,18, conspired and kidnapped Ikechukwu Nwachukwu, who is two years and six months old, from his parents in Umuozu- Uguiri in the Isiala Mbano LGA.

“The two suspects, after the kidnap, started demanding ransom from the parents of the child. When the parents of the kidnapped child could not provide the money, they opted to sell the child to one Ifeanyinwa Duru, 39, at the cost of N500,000. Duru, in turn, resold the child to one Chidimma Emmanuel, 42, at the cost of N700,000.

“The two buyers were arrested in Aba following painstaking investigation, while the child was rescued unhurt and has since been reunited with the legitimate parents by the command.

“The suspects have confessed to the crime and investigation has been concluded. The syndicate will soon be charged to court.

“The Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, has instructed all heads of the tactical units of the command to go all out against those who trade in human beings, especially children, who have done nothing wrong except that they were born into a society that has lost its values.”

Emmanuel said her desperation to have a male child after the death of her husband lured her into the crime.

The couple told our correspondent that they had earlier sold their first child to an unnamed person in Port Harcourt for N200,000, on credit.

A police source told PUNCH Metro that operatives of the command were already closing in on the buyer and would soon arrest him and rescue the child.

Our correspondent learnt that 18-year-old Ugorji was already pregnant with another child.

The contractor handling the MKO Abiola International Airport in Ido-Osun, Osun State, on Thursday said the first phase of the N69bn project would be ready within eight months.

The Chief Executive Officer of AWOL Group of Companies in charge of the airport project, Mr. Nurudeen Ogunlade, disclosed this at a news conference in Osogbo on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Osun Government, on October 26, signed a concession agreement with AWOL for the construction of the airport.

“The concession agreement will be on “Build-Operate-Transfer” basis and to last for 30 years.’’

The contract was first awarded on October 14, 2012, at the cost of N4.5bn and was to be completed within eight months. It was later reviewed to N11bn.

Ogunlade said with the construction of the airport, the economy and tourism potential of the state would be fully realised.

“The state’s tourism potential will not be fully realised without an international airport. And tourism is likely to be our foreign exchange earner for a long time to come.’’

Ogunlade said the airport project would provide about 10,000 jobs for youths during the construction period and 2,000 jobs after its completion.

He said there would be a cargo and maintenance section as part of the airport structural design, which would be one of its kind in the country and the West African sub-region.

“With the increasing alarm in food shortage in the country, the MKO Abiola International Airport will double up with manufacturing products and food bank warehouse cargo sector.’’

Ogunlade said the airport project was increased from N11bn to N69bn under the concession agreement due to its expansion and other modern facilities that were included.

He, however, said the airport, which would be built on 839 hectares of land, would be funded 100 percent by the company.

On his part, the State Commissioner for works, Mr. Kazeem Salami, said the airport would bring development to the state after its completion.

A front line 2019 governorship aspirant in Ogun State, Senator Solomon Adeola, on Thursday revealed that he has no grudges against Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

Adeola who is popularly called Yayi said what exists between him and Amosun are just differences in “political ideology and political belief,” explaining that what he found disagreeable about the Governor is his mindset that someone coming from Lagos should not govern Ogun State.

The Senator who hailed from Agosaga Pahayi in Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, but currently representing Lagos West at the National Assembly, added that it was this Amosun’s attitude of “how can he come from Lagos to rule us” remained the source of contention between the duo.

Adeola made the clarification while fielding questions during an interactive session with members of the Ogun West Consultative Forum at Ilaro, the Headquarters of Yewa South Local Government Area.

He recalled that each of the first civilian Governor of Ogun State, Bisi Onabanjo, Chief Olusegun Osoba, Otunba Gbenga Daniel and Amosun himself had all worked or done business in Lagos for years before returning home to vie for and won the position of a Governor in Ogun State.

The Senator wondered why a strange and different yardstick should now be introduced into the political field of the state by the incumbent Governor because the Ogun West people have become more determined to produce a Governor in 2019?

Adeola noted that he “wants to be Governor of Ogun State but not desperate” about it, stressing, however, that he remained unflinching in his resolve to pursue the ambition to a successful end.

He also noted that there were many rumours flying about to the effect that he was stalling the efforts of the Governor to obtain the $350m loan facility which requires clearance by the Senate, and said there was no truth to it.

Adeola said he would not stand in the way of what would bring development or progress to the state, adding that the loan facility even came up on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday.

He explained that nobody was working to frustrate the Governor from seeking the $350m facility, saying he recognises the rights of states to source for a financial package but it shouldn’t be a routine thing.

He said he would resuscitate the Ogun State Road Maintenance Agency(OGROMA) to address the constant road problems in the state, revisit the abandoned Olokola Liquefied Natural Gas(OKLNG) located in Ode – Omi in Ogun Waterside, leverage on the proximity of Ogun to Lagos to boost the socio-economic fortunes of the state.

Jonathan lost woefully in osun state, lost woefully in oyo state. The only state he won was in Ekiti and even then the votes was paltry in the scheme of things. He even lost in lagos but made a strong showing thanks to the already mentioned factors.
