The governor of Akwa Ibom state has rained curses on governorship aspirants who he has not endorsed for the 2015 governors contest in the state, referring to them as enemies who betrayed him. He equally pronounced death on all his perceived opponents, stating that none of them had any reason to fall out with him, because he raised and empowered them all. Akpabio in a fit of anger likened the aspirants as Lucifer and the Biblical Absalom who betrayed God and King David respectively, averring that none of the governorship aspirants would get the chance to rule Akwa Ibom state as they had desired. The governor poured anger on perceived opponents to his alleged plan to install a candidate of his choice as the next governor of Akwa Ibom during a ground breaking ceremony for the construction of a new Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) state Secretariat in Uyo last Thursday. Akpabio in his speech at the event took a step further by pronouncing death and great misfortune over those who fell out with him politically in the state, alleging betrayal on their paths. He coerced all guests present during the ceremony to chorus amen as he openly rained curses on his perceived opponents. Although the angry governor did not drop any name, those who at one point or the other, fell out with him politically in the state include, Patrick Ekpotu, Nsima Ekere, Senator Alloysious Etuk and Bassey Albert. Others include Chief Don Etiebet, Umana Okon Umana, Senator Bob Effiong, Ambassador Assam Assam, Hon Bernard Udoh and a host of others. Akpabio has also been in a running battle with Obong Victor Attah, his predecessor, business guru and first class engineer, Chief Ime Umanah, Architect Otu Ita Toyo and a host of elderstatesmen in the state He said to the crowd during the ceremony, “Those who want to take power through the backdoor will die. They will die! And the PDP will continue. In Akwa Ibom State, those who want to betray, who were supposed to be our political children, of course they will end like Absalom. But if they changed their minds, then they will obtain favour from the sight of God. “Almighty God recognized that even the people he worked with, and called them angels, that one of them was going to betray him, and that was Lucifer. What did God do? He threw him out of heaven. Has he entered Heaven till today? “You empower your children so that they will be a pride to you. You don’t empower them so that they come and betray you. That is the lot of the World.” Akpabio delved into the scriptures to buttress his point on the curses he was raining, stating, "I go back into the Bible, I saw the story of Absalom. And I said may God take away the spirit of Absalom from our midst. “Who was Absalom? The son of David, the father trained him and empowered him as the would-be King of Israel. Because of impatience, Absalom wanted to take over before the age of 30. He wanted to kill King David. And the King said, leave him to his fate. “Did it end well with Absalom? (Crowd response: Nooooo!) As a young man, he died, while his father continued”. The National Chairman of PDP who was present at the occasion refrained from making comments on the governor’s vituperations against his perceived enemies. Mu’Azu in his speech only entreated the PDP supporters in Akwa Ibom to continue their support for President Goodluck Jonathan who he said has been battling hard to contain insecurity problem in Nigeria. Alluding to the rampaging activities of terrorists in Nigeria, the PDP Chairman said, “We must continue to pray for them to be converted so that Nigeria will not only remain strong united country, but a strong united country that will rightfully take up its leadership role in the comity of nations. http://saharareporters.com/2014/07/21/2015-gov-akpabio-curses-guber-aspirants-akwa-ibompronounces-death-all-his-opponents |
Nigeria's richest man Alhaji Aliko Dangote has become the first African entrepreneur to be valued at $20bn after the latest Forbes magazine global ranking of millionaires rated him among the 25 wealthiest persons on earth. According to the Forbes survey, the stock value of Dangote Cement, leaped just about three-fourths since March, thus taking Alhaji Dangote’s 93% stake in the company to $19.5bn. When this is added to his controlling stakes in other publicly-listed companies like Dangote Sugar, Dangote Flour and the National Salt Company of Nigeria, Alhaji Dangote's wealth balloons. Apart from his own companies, the billionaire also holds significant shareholdings in other blue-chip multinationals like Zenith Bank and the United Bank for Africa. When Alhaji Dangote's personal wealth, which includes his extensive real estate portfolio, jets, yachts and current cash position, including more than $300m in recently awarded Dangote Cement dividends, he worth is enhanced significantly. At the moment, Alhaji Dangote is wealthier than Russia’s richest man Alisher Usmanov, India’s Lakshmi Mittal and running neck and neck with India’s Mukesh Ambani. According to forecasts, his wealth is on course to catch up with that of American Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Carl Franklin, Dangote Cement’s head of investor relations in the UK, said that in the first quarter of 2013, the company had a huge increase in demand across Nigeria. He added that gas supply also improved considerably and the capacity was much more ramped up. Mr Franklin said: "Quarter one was the first sign of just how profitable we can be in Nigeria and the amazing thing is that 66% of our gas-fired production was done at 84% gas. Imagine what would happen to margins if we did the same amount at 95% and this has given investors a good sense of what we can really do when everything goes in the right direction.” With a current market cap of $20.5bn, Dangote Cement has become the first Nigerian company to achieve a market capitalisation of over $20bn. Mr Franklin added: “It’s certainly a landmark for a Nigerian company and we’re proud to be the first to achieve it. "Obviously we are focusing on building long-term and sustainable value for shareholders through our investments in Nigeria and Africa. Nigeria is a very entrepreneurial country and I can assure you that other companies will follow us in achieving this.” Alhaji Dangote debuted on the Forbes billionaires list in 2008 with a fortune we pegged at $3.3bn, which dropped to $2.5bn in 2009 and plunged further to $2.1bn in 2010. His fortune then surged 557% in 2011 to $13.8bn after he took Dangote Cement public but dropped to $11.2bn in last year’s rankings but rebounded at $16.1bn this year. Alhaji Dangote still likely has bigger ambitions. He told Forbes in 2011 that he expected his firm to have a market capitalisation of $60bn within five years. NAIRALAND HACKED- June 2014: NAIRALAND forum not returning soon! Seun Osewa hints... The best forum in Nigeria; Nairaland has been down for about 48 hours now and many addicted fans - including moi - have taken to facebook and twitter to lament. Although Seun Osewa, the owner of Nairaland is yet to explain what really happened - he's not answering messages directed at him on any of the social media pages - he kinda hinted us saying 'the site may not be up soon' He posted “I am so sorry” on twitter yesterday and further posted "it may be worse than you think, it may take much longer than you expect' today. So, if you are one of the addicted fans, there is actually nothing you can do for now than to keep trying the site and hoping it will be restored soonest.Nairaland is one of Nigeria’s most visited sites, with 1.3 million visitors at the last check. Another drop-out? Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard to pursue their interests (Facebook and Microsoft), Seun also enrolled as a student of Obafemi Awolowo University (oops, Great Ife, we rule!) to study electrical engineering in 1998, but he did not finish. No, he wasn’t rusticated. Too brilliant to be. But an account has it he left to do the “Bill Gates” thing. So how did he hit the Nairaland jackpot? an out of money, while I couldn’t execute many other projects I researched due to shyness and lack of capital. My blogs and the mobile phone forum that preceded Nairaland were successful but not profitable. However, it was on that foundation that Nairaland was built.” “About 2 years earlier (2003) I had attempted to start a web hosting business, but after 3 months I could only boast of one customer, so I ran out of capital and the business died. It would probably have succeeded if I had managed my capital more wisely or raised more money as I got many hosting requests I couldn’t satisfy later that year. After that first failure, I was encouraged to get certifications and a regular job, but I couldn’t go back to that kind of path after tasting creative freedom, so I kept researching business ideas and presenting them to friends and family, but no capital was forthcoming to carry any of them out. I did this for less than 2 years. (The last idea was a site for sending SMS messages. I picked up Python to implement it.) Eventually, I decided to start a web forum, because it was the only idea that required no additional capital: I already had Internet access and a $15 per month VPS graciously paid for by a family friend. I created 3 forums in November 2003 (one for higher institution students, one for IT discussions, and one to cover the emerging GSM industry; the Mobile Nigeria Forum at MobileNigeria.com). The Mobile Nigeria Forum took off, so I relaunched it in February 2005 with the assistance of Mr. John Sagai Adams, who posted a link to the forum on his mailing list and participated enthusiastically in those early days. Other mobile enthusiasts like Mr. Yomi Adegboye pitched in to make the site a success. In a month or so, the forum had about 300 members, but the growth potential didn’t satisfy me. I decided to start Nairaland when I noticed two odd things about MobileNigeria: (1) Despite its narrow focus, it was the only Nigerian community that gave a voice to Nigerians at home. Most other Nigerian sites were owned and dominated by Nigerians in the US or UK. They covered only issues of interests to Nigerians abroad. (2) The off topic section of the forum, covering topics outside telecoms, like romance and jokes, was becoming more vibrant than the Mobile Nigeria Forum itself, suggesting the need for a more general-purpose Nigerian forum. This gave me the confidence to take forums like Naijaryders and Talknaija head on by starting a general purpose discussion forum with a strong bias towards issues of interest to Nigerians at home. I felt that such a site could attract enough traffic to make enough money from Google adverts. That’s why I started the Nairaland Forum.” ( CP- AFRICA.COM) 2005: What’s with that year? Did I just see Seun say he started Nairaland in 2005? I am still searching for answer to why the most successful online ventures around today started between 2004-2006. Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Mashable, Techcrunch, Linda Ikeji, Bella Naija, and other Kings and Queens of the Social Media space started during this period. Why? Okay, Jarushub, the heir apparent, started in 2013.

FROM FUN TO MILLIONS: HOW SEUN OSEWA BUILT A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR ONLINE VENTURE WITH NAIRALAND Mark Zuckerberg? Yes, that’s the boy that started Facebook. What started as a tool to share pictures and poke fun at chics by some students on Harvard campus is now a multi-billion dollars enterprise. With a networth estimated to be $19 billion, Mark, who will be 30 in May, is the richest under-30 in the world. He became a billionaire at 23 years. Now, Facebook, you know very well; Google, you visit everyday even to search for answers to JAMB questions; Youtube, you watch; Yahoo, you have an email account with; but have you ever given thought to one website that recurringly turns up anytime you search for anything Nigerian? Does Nairaland ring a bell? If you’re an active internet user, or you consult that machine to search for stuff, chances are you would have come across Nairaland. Well, Nairaland is Nigeria’s biggest indigenous website and only Facebook, Yahoo, Google and are more viewed than it. Put better, it commands more visits than Twitter and Wikipedia in Nigeria. It also bests sites like Punch, Vanguard, Guardian etc. It is the seventh most visited website in Nigeria and among the top 1000 most viewed sites in the world. Nairaland records more than one million views everyday. But behind this hugely successful online site is one young man called Seun Osewa. Who is Seun Osewa? Seun was born some 32 years ago. He is an indigene of Ogun state (this state has more firsts than any other state in Nigeria: Abiola, Obasanjo, Awolowo, Soyinka, wetin sef?). He lives in Ogun state and has refused to move to Lagos, the “happening capital” of Nigeria. The beginning was not rosy - Small boy just playing on the internet in 2003…no, he actually started with all seriousness In this 2006 interview, he narrated how all his businesses before Nairaland failed .
