Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf imposed a nighttime curfew from Wednesday and quarantined two affected neighbourhoods in a bid to stem the Ebola epidemic rampaging through West Africa. “Commencing Wednesday, August 20 there will be a curfew from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am (2100 to 0600 GMT),” Sirleaf said in a radio address late Tuesday. “All entertainment centres are to be closed. All video centres are to be closed at 6:00 pm,” she ordered. The new quarantine areas include Monrovia’s West Point slum. Earlier, Liberia’s Information Minister Lewis Brown announced the return of 17 missing Ebola patients, who had fled a medical facility in West Point on Saturday after it was attacked by club-wielding youths. Their disappearance had raised fears of a nightmare scenario of people with the highly contagious disease wandering the city, where unburied corpses have lain abandoned in the streets. In Nigeria, meanwhile, a senior doctor who treated the country’s first Ebola patient has died, taking the death toll in Africa’s most populous country to five, health minister Onyebuchi Chukwu said on Tuesday. Chukwu said Liberian-American Patrick Sawyer, 40, was “the most senior who participated in the management of the (first Ebola) patient” in the country. The World Health Organization said the tropical virus had killed 84 people in just three days, a surge that has pushed the overall death toll from the West African outbreak to 1,229. - Liberia suffering biggest death toll - Liberia has suffered the biggest toll, 466 deaths from 834 diagnosed cases. Guinea has recorded 543 cases and 394 deaths, Sierra Leone 848 cases and 365 deaths. But, in a glimmer of hope, Brown said three doctors in Liberia who had been given the experimental US- made drug ZMapp were responding to the treatment. The UN’s new pointman on Ebola, David Nabarro, will travel to West Africa Wednesday hoping to shore up health services in the four countries hit by the worst-ever outbreak of the virus. The British physician will fly to Dakar late Wednesday before heading to Monrovia, Freetown, Conakry and Abuja, accompanied by Keiji Fukuda from the World Health Organisation. Nabarro said he would focus on “revitalizing the health sectors” in the West African countries, many of which have only recently emerged from many years of devastating conflict. The spreading virus is overwhelming inadequate public health services already battling common deadly diseases such as malaria. Efforts to contain the epidemic have also run up against local distrust of outside doctors, and stories of aid workers carrying the infection. Such fears have often led to violence, with the raid on the medical facility in Monrovia’s West Point slum on Saturday the most dramatic example. Wild rumours of cannibalism and people being drained of their blood in Ebola clinics have fuelled panic, with health workers saying the testimony of survivors was crucial to proving myths wrong. President Sirleaf warned that local rituals were among the factors spreading the disease. “We have been unable to control the spread due to continued denials, cultural burying practices, disregard for the advice of health workers and disrespect for the warnings by the government,” she bemoaned. - ‘Encouraging signs’ - WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib noted “encouraging signs” in Nigeria and Guinea, where prevention measures and work to trace lines of infection were starting to take effect. The Nigerian outbreak has been traced to a sole foreigner, a Liberian-American who died in late July in Lagos. All subsequent Nigerian victims have had direct contact with him. No cure or vaccine is currently available for the disease, which is spread by close contact with body fluids, meaning patients must be isolated. Given the extent of the crisis, the WHO has authorised largely untested treatments — including ZMapp and the Canadian-made VSV-EBOV vaccine, whose possible side effects on humans are not known. Quarantine cordons now limit travel to some of the most infected areas such as Gueckedou in Guinea, Kenema and Kailahun in Sierra Leone and Foya in Liberia. But with supplies cut, many of the one million people living in the zones are struggling to feed themselves, Chaib said, and the World Food Programme was now stepping in. Countries throughout Africa and beyond are on high alert, with the Equatorial Guinea airline, Ceiba Intercontinental, the latest to suspend flights to the whole region. Only three international airlines are still flying to Sierra Leone — Royal Air Maroc, Brussels Airlines and Air France. Some Air France flight crews are refusing to board planes bound for Guinea, Sierra Leone and Nigeria over fears of the Ebola outbreak, the airline said Tuesday. On Tuesday, medical authorities in Spain said a man with fever who had returned from Sierra Leone had been placed in an isolation ward. German experts said that a sick 30-year-old woman of West African origin who sparked an Ebola scare in Berlin was likely to be suffering from a gastrointestinal infection. www.vanguardngr.com/2014/08/liberia-imposes-curfew-ebola-crisis-grows/

AKURE— A-19-year-old apprentice welder (names withheld) was caught today making love to a hen. The fowl reportedly died during the act. The taboo was said to have been committed by the apprentice at about 11.20 p.m. at Continental area of Akure metropolis. The suspect, Vanguard learnt, had committed same taboo with a goat in his home town, Afo in Ose council area of the state. He was said to have been ex-communicated from his home town because of the offence which made him to move in with his brother in Akure. Speaking with newsmen, the owner of fowl, Mrs Stella Akintola, who resides in the same building confirmed that the man actually made love to her chicken. According to her, she went to bed early but was woken up by the noise coming from the chickens at the back of her room, an indication that someone was disturbing their peace. The discovery Akintola said she went outside only to find that the back door was still opened. According to her, she became curious and “I shouted to know who was still at the backyard only for him to appear from the corner of the house, saying he went to the toilet because he had a running stomach.” Akintola said she was not convinced especially as she noticed that the noise from the chickens’ pen stopped abruptly. She said she went to where the chickens were but nothing was found. “It was when I visited the toilet that I found one of the them stone dead with its feathers littering the floor,” she said. Still unaware that the suspect was the cause of the death of the bird, Akintola said she raised an alarm only for him to confess that he was responsible for the death of the fowl. Akintola said the suspect confessed and begged her for forgiveness, saying he would pay any amount for the dead fowl. She said she decided not to report the matter to the police because she could not stand the rigour she would be subjected to by the police over a “minor offence.” Report had it that there were evidence that the man actually had sex with the hen when it was examined by the owner and others living in the building. A spirit directed me to do it —Suspect In an interview with newsmen, the suspect, who declined to speak initially, however, said a spirit directed him to do what he did. He said: “I was already sleeping when a spirit just came upon me and directed me to go to the back of the building. I did not know what I was doing again until when I discovered that I had slept with the hen.” Contacted, the police image maker, Wole Ogodo, said since the matter was not reported to the police, he could not comment on it. Ogodo noted that “it is what members of the public bring to our notice that we investigate. This is a strange occurrence if what you are telling me is the truth.” www.vanguardngr.com/2014/08/19-yr-old-rapes-chicken-death-ondo/

NIGERIA’S Super Falconettes have soared into the semi finals of the U20 Women’s World Cup currently taking place in Canada with an emphatic 4-1 thrashing of New Zealand that has sent shockwaves through the tournament. Now seen as the favourites to lift the trophy, the rampant Falconettes were merciless yesterday, racing into a three goal lead. Two goals apiece from Asisat Oshoala and Uchechi Sunday at the Moncton Stadium last night, now sets up a semi clash against North Korea on Wednesday at the same venue. As early as the first minute, the Falconettes showed they meant serious business with Oshoala scoring just 31 seconds into the game, finishing an attack that began from the kick-off. Ugo Njoku sent in an inch-perfect cross from the right in between two New Zealand defenders, allowing the striker to head home from six yards. It was the second-fastest goal at the U-20 Women’s World Cup ever, only bettered by team-mate Courtney Dike’s strike 18 seconds into Nigeria’s second group stage game against South Korea. Oshoala then doubled Nigeria’s lead 11 minutes later after Chinwendu Ihezuo sent a delightful ball into space, beating four Kiwi defenders with the pass. After receiving the ball, Oshoala to chase took one touch towards goal and finished through the legs of New Zealand goalkeeper Lily Alfeld. An enthusiastic dancing celebration involving Oshoala and her team-mates ensued near the corner flag to the delight of the watching crowd. New Zealand, who were playing in their first quarter-final at the U-20 Women’s World Cup, looked out of their comfort zone throughout the first half and were never able to trouble the Nigerian backline. After the second goal, the Falconettes seemed to settle on their lead, with the action abating as both teams struggled to control possession on a rainy pitch in Moncton. It was much of the same after the break, although Emma Rolston nearly gave New Zealand some hope in the 54th minute. She flicked on a hopeful long ball, which nearly caught Falconettes goalkeeper Sandra Chiichii by surprise but the keeper was able to get a hand on it. Alfeld did well to keep the scoreline at two nil in the 68th minute when she tipped a shot on to the crossbar from Uchenna Kanu. There was not much the Kiwi keeper could do six minutes from time though when Sunday blasted home from a corner kick just six yards out, to extend Nigeria’s lead to 3-0. Rolston later ensured New Zealand would not crash out of the quarter-final without the consolation of goal, beating a Nigerian defender to the near post and redirecting Jasmine Pereira’s cross past Chiichii to make it 3-1 after 89 minutes. In the waning seconds, however, Nigeria restored her three-goal lead when Sunday scored her second goal in six minutes. A pacey striker adorning the number 20 top, she dribbled down the left, beat her defender and calmly finished past Alfeld. Since their opening 1-1 draw with Mexico, the Falconettes have now won three games in a row and remain favourites for the trophy. http://brainnewsng.com/super-falconettes-cruise-into-world-cup-semi-finals-thrashing-new-zealand-4-1/

NIGERIAN pastorpruener David Oyedepo has been barred from entering the UK by the British Home Office following the commencement of investigations into his affairs by the UK Charities Commission. Bishop Oyedepo, popularly known as Papa by his followers, has been under investigation by the Charities Commission since 2012. Investigators are looking into the activities of his Living Faith Church, also known as Winners Chapel and the way it gets money from parishioners. Preliminary enquiries have accused the UK branch of Winners Chapel, run by Bishop Oyedepo's son, of cynically exploiting supporters. As a result of the investigation, the Home Office has instructed the British High Commission in Abuja to issue what is known as an Airline Alert, which bars any carrier from bringing him into the UK. One source at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, said that the barring of Bishop Oyedepo, was communicated to the airlines on Saturday, 9 August, 2014. According to the contents of the alert, any airline that flouts the ban and transports Bishop Oyedepo to the UK, is liable to a fine of £2,000. Bishop Oyedepo holds a UK C visa that allows him entry into the country for 10 years, so ordinarily would not have any problem travelling at will. He also owns four private jets, so it is not yet clear what will happen if he decide to travel in using his own transport. Authorities in the UK are concerned about the manner in which Bishop Oyedepo's church raises money from unsuspecting, naive and gullible members of the public. According to preliminary findings, Bishop Oyedepo’s church ‘received £16.7m in donations from followers who were told that God would give them riches in return. Charity Commission officials also found out that his followers are ferried in double-decker shuttle buses to the church, handed slips inviting them to make debit card payments. They are even told obeying the ministry’s teachings will make them immune from illness and many of them oblige.
