WAR LOOM.. South Korea and the United States launched joint drills Monday involving thousands of troops, defying North Korea's apocalyptic threat to repudiate the 60-year- old Korean War armistice in retaliation. The start of the two-week "Key Resolve" exercise follows a week of escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula, with North Korea also threatening nuclear war over UN sanctions adopted after its third atomic test last month. Pyongyang has condemned the annual joint manoeuvres as a provocative invasion rehearsal and announced that -- effective Monday -- it was scrapping the 1953 armistice and voiding non- aggression treaties signed with the South. The South's Unification Ministry confirmed that the North appeared to have carried through on another promise to cut a telephone hotline between Pyongyang and Seoul. "The North did not answer our call this morning," a ministry spokeswoman said. The hotline was installed in 1971 and the North has severed it on five occasions in the past -- most recently in 2010. In a dispatch late Monday from its official news agency KCNA, North Korea restated its view that the armistice, "which has existed for form's sake, would be completely invalid from March 11". The US-South Korean wargames are "bringing the dark clouds of a nuclear war to hang over the Korean peninsula", KCNA added, while vowing that North Korea's armed forces were ready for an "all-out action". Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of the North's ruling communist party, said that with "the ceasefire agreement blown apart... no one can predict what will happen from now on". Voiding the armistice theoretically paves the way for a resumption of hostilities, as the two Koreas never signed a formal peace treaty and remain technically at war. "The North is giving the impression it wants to put things back to where they were 60 years ago," said Yang Moo-Jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul. Experts point out that North Korea has declared the ceasefire dead or obsolete nearly a dozen times in the past 20 years. On the last occasion in 2009, the North specifically said it would no longer guarantee the safety of US or South Korean naval vessels operating near the disputed maritime border. The sinking of a South Korean naval corvette and the shelling of a South Korean island near the border followed in 2010. Sabre-rattling and displays of brinkmanship are nothing new in the region, but there are concerns that the current situation is so volatile that one accidental step could escalate into serious confrontation and conflict. Having issued so many dire warnings, the North will feel obliged to take some provocative action, observers say. Yang predicted short-range missile tests or an incursion across the sea border. The analyst said he found it "particularly alarming" that North Korea's young leader Kim Jong-Un appeared content to act with no concern for the response of ally China -- widely seen as losing patience with its volatile neighbour. "Key Resolve" is an annual, largely computer- simulated exercise, but still involves the mobilisation of more than 10,000 South Korean and 3,500 US military personnel. About 28,500 US troops are stationed in South Korea. The South Korean Defence Ministry says North Korea is expected to carry out its own large-scale military drill along its eastern front this week, involving the army, navy and air force. North Korean artillery bases on islands close to the disputed maritime border have already placed their cannon in firing positions, ministry officials said. The North's foreign ministry has already warned that a second Korean War is "unavoidable" and threatened "pre-emptive nuclear attacks" on the United States and South Korea. The North is not seen as having the ability to deliver a nuclear warhead to the US mainland. South Korea, which usually shrugs off Pyongyang's fiery rhetoric, has promised to retaliate to any provocation with a precision strike on the North's leadership command. The surge in tensions is an early challenge to South Korea's new President Park Geun-Hye, who was only sworn in two weeks ago and is still without a confirmed defence minister, national security adviser or intelligence chief. http:// |

Meteorite Crashes In Russia. Intercepted By Missiles... Watch video: http:// www.youtube.com/ watch?v=7c-0iwBEswE At least one meteorite crashed into Russia earlier today, causing several giant explosions and forcing schools and offices to be evacuated. The meteorite reportedly landed in the Chelyabinsk region of Russia, where witnesses said the explosions shattered the windows of nearby buildings and disrupted cell phone service. There were over 400 injuries, and damage was reported in six cities. Information is still coming in and we'll update accordingly, but for now check out the amazing videos and photos from the scene. There's more at Russian Machine Never Breaks. .UPDATE: RT is now reporting, citing unconfirmed military sources, that the meteorite was intercepted by Russian air defense forces, who reportedly used a missile to destroy it while it was still 20 km in the air. UPDATE 2: It remains unclear if there were any injuries. The BBC is reporting there were injuries, but Reuters cites an official that says no one was hurt . UPDATE 3: As a commenter pointed out, a small asteroid was expected to pass by Earth early Friday, though there's no confirmation that this had anything to do with the meteorite crash in Russia. Russian Machine cites a Slate article by Phil Plait about the asteroid: On Friday, Feb. 15, the Earth is going to get a very close shave byan asteroid*. Called 2012 DA14, this 50 meter (160 foot) rock will pass just over 27,000 kilometers (17,000 miles) from the Earth's surface. This is closer than our geosynchronous satellites, so this really is a close pass! But, to be very clear: This asteroidposes no threat to us right now, nor in the foreseeable future. Friday's miss is just that: a miss. And, in fact, this is a good thing, since any time an asteroid gets close (but misses), we learn a lot, including how to find them, how to track them, and even how to talk about them to the public. Plait's reaction to the news from Russia? I don't *think* this meteor is related to # 2012DA14 ; a solid 12+ hours ahead; DA14 is still pretty far out. Coincidence? — Phil Plait (@ BadAstronomer) February 15, 2013 UPDATE 4: RT is now reporting up to 100 injuries. There are still conflicting reports about the meteorite itself. As CBS reports : "A spokeswoman for Russia's Emergency Ministry, Irina Rossius, told The Associated Press there was a meteor shower, but another ministry spokeswoman, Elena Smirnikh, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying it was a single meteorite." UPDATE 5: There are now 292 confirmed injuries , including at least 12 children. Most of the injuries are from broken glass. UPDATE 6: The injury total is now at over 400, and buildings were damaged in six cities. BREAKING UPDATE: Over 400 minor injuries, buildings damaged in 6 cities as meteorite hits... .I hope we don't encounter one that will knock earth out of its orbit o... In Russia !!! THEY WERE ALL ALERT! WAITING FOR ANY IMMINENT DANGER! ONLY GOD KNOWS WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN OUR FAITH IF THIS WERE TO BE IN NIGERIA! TODAY'S NEWS HEADLINES ALL OVER THE WORLD WILL BE LIKE CNN- A GIANT METEORITE WASHES OUT THE GIANT OF AFRICA ALJAZEERA- METEORITE STRIKES NIGERIA TWO WEEKS AFTER THE NATIONS CUP; BURKINA FASO SUSPECTED BBC- METEORITE SHOWERS ECLIPSE OUR FORMER COLONY; MI7 ON THE LOOKOUT FOR |

SABOTEURS BEHIND UNIABUJA CRISIS- VC Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof James Adelabu, yesterday alleged that saboteurs were responsible for the crisis in the institution. Prof Adelabu, who made the allegation while briefing newsmen in Abuja after he undertook a tour of newly established infrastructures in the main campus of the institution, maintained that some mischievous makers were bent on destroying the reputation of the university. The VC said: “University of Abuja is a public institution which some people are bent on running down for no other reason other than their personal dislike for the chief executive. “It is the proverbial case of employing a sledge hammer to kill a fly. I pray that you will see through the deceit of the selfish few and assist the university in its drive to salvage the situation on the campus for the good of us all.” He said when his administration came on board in 2009, all the four new programmes, including Agriculture, Engineering, Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, which were the main crux of the crisis were housed either in rented buildings or borrowed structures at Gwagwalada or Sheda from where they were either ejected or relocated. He, however, stated that the Engineering programme, which was illegal in the school before now, had earlier failed verification by the National Universities Commission, NUC, and, therefore, ought to have been stopped by the previous administration... University of Abuja postponed exam till february 18th... Examinations scheduled for final year students of the University of Abuja which should have begun Monday were postponed by management owing to agitations by protesting students over problems of accreditation. As early as 5:00am monday morning, Engineering and Medical students were at loggerheads with the varsity leadership over non-accreditation of their programmes had locked the varsity’s gate at the main campus. Daily Trust observed students who had come to sit for the examinations, loitered outside in groups and heavy presence of mobile police and soldiers. Chinedu Okolo, an Engineering student said management had “done nothing” in the last two months to purchase equipment in the faculty and they have had enough promises without action. Okolo said, “It is obvious the university is not willing to help us but we are going to compel them by whatever means possible.” Uchenna Anyanwu, President of the Medical Students Association, said the management is reluctant in making efforts even after the students protest. He said their stance now is “no accreditation, no exams.” Some of the students who spoke to Daily Trust said they identified with the protesting students and they needed a leverage to gain the attention of the management. But Victoria Modupe a Computer Science student said, “I want to graduate and go for service. They should understand our own predicament too.” Deputy Registrar of Information Waziri Garba said management met with leaders of students associations who requested for students to be in the hostels one week before the examination. Waziri said management presented the matter to an emergency senate session which held yesterday and it was approved that examinations be postponed for one week, to start on February 18. But a source who attended the senate meeting said the senate could not deliberate on the proposition of management to postpone the examinations due to heavy presence of armed policemen in the senate chamber. Some members of senate walked out of the meeting protesting the presence of the armed security officials and a decision could not be reached on the matter. Comments ......but Why it is that the Uni-Abuja management cannot solve this problem once and for all, don't do they know that they are tarnishing the image of the school? please let them do something tangible inorder to avoid the occurences of this problem in future.
