A Kenyan lawyer has filed a petition with the International Court of Justice in The Hague, suggesting that the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ was unlawful, and the State of Israel among others should be held responsible, Kenyan news outlet the Nairobian reported on Friday. Dola Indidis, a lawyer and former spokesman of the Kenyan Judiciary is reportedly attempting to sue Tiberius (emperor of Rome, 42 BCE-37 CE), Pontius Pilate, a selection of Jewish elders, King Herod, the Republic of Italy and the State of Israel. “Evidence today is on record in the Bible, and you cannot discredit the Bible,” Indidis told the Kenyan Citizen News. Although those he suggests should have been convicted during the original trial have not been alive for more than 2,000 years, Indidis insists that the government for whom they acted can and should still be held responsible. “I filed the case because it’s my duty to uphold the dignity of Jesus and I have gone to the ICJ to seek justice for the man from Nazareth,” Indidis told the Nairobian. “His selective and malicious prosecution violated his human rights through judicial misconduct, abuse of office bias and prejudice.” Indidis apparently named the states of Italy and Israel in the lawsuit because upon the attainment of independence, the two states incorporated the laws of the Roman Empire, those in force at the time of the crucifixion. He is challenging the mode of questioning used during Jesus’s trial, prosecution, hearing and sentencing; the form of punishment meted out to him while undergoing judicial proceedings and the substance of the information used to convict him. The case was first filed in the High Court in Nairobi but was rejected. Indidis then applied to have it heard at the ICJ. Indidis says he wants to establish what crime Jesus was charged with and prays that the court decides “that the proceedings before the Roman courts were a nullity in law, for they did not conform to the rule of law at the material time and any time thereafter.” “Some of those present spat in his face, struck him with their fists, slapped him, taunted him, and pronounced him worthy of death,” Indidis told the Kenyan news website Standard Media(SDE). When Jesus died, Indidis insists, he was not given an opportunity to be heard. “I am suing as a friend,” he said. Indidis insisted on the validity of his case, saying “I know with a matter of fact and truth we have a good case with a high probability of success and I hope it is done in my lifetime.” When asked about the case, an official from the ICJ told legal news website Legal Cheek, “The ICJ has no jurisdiction for such a case. The ICJ settles disputes between states. It is not even theoretically possible for us to consider this case.” |
I weep for all the Nigerian students begging for ASUU to call off strike so that they can finish school. After school what? You graduate from a system that cannot compete with 2000 world rated universities. The paper you collect only shows that you are capable of learning as companies will have to train you again to learn what you need to know when others in other land spend 4 years to know all the theories and practicals that will take you 10 years to acquire in Nigeria. ASUU is fighting to correct this. Instead of you to put pressure on the FG to make tertiary education world standard , you are call on ASUU to return to you dirty, ill-equiped classroom and labs. The mere fact that you are satisfy with the status quo and want to go back to it means that you have no education. Because the number 1 objective of an educated mind is to know that something is wrong and a solution should be found and implemented. ;DI weep for all the Nigerian students begging for ASUU to call off strike so that they can finish school. BENIN—TENSION heightened at Benin Catholic Archdiocese, Edo State, weekend, following the call for the removal of the Catholic Archbishop, Bishop Augustine Akubueze by the Iyase of Benin Kingdom, Chief Sam Igbe and few Benin priests. They based their call on what they described as the refusal of the “indigenisation of worship process” in Catholic churches in Benin by the Bishop. It will be recalled that few Benin priests had called for the removal of the Bishop last week, alleging that he flooded the Diocese with Igbo priests and was implementing anti-Benin policies. However, former Senate Chief Whip, Senator Rowland Owie and a Benin Priest, Pama Ikponmwonsa, disagreed and described the call as ungodly, retrogressive and diversionary, saying “Bini don’t forbid visitors and this is purely a religious matter and has nothing to do with tribe.” Senator Owie said: “Let any one of them challenge me to a public debate on the stewardship of Archbishop Akubueze since his arrival. “Apart from Bishop Gbuji, the evangelistic efforts of Akubueze in Edo South, which is the Archdiocese of Benin, is unprecedented in the Catholic Church. We should learn to give honour to whom honour is due to.” However, Chief Igbe, who was flanked by other Benin Chiefs, accused the archbishop of doing things contrary to the Papal policy of promoting indigenous language and customs of the people. He said that the use of local languages would, the Roman Catholic Church leadership believed, lead to wining more converts to the church. Speaking on behalf of the Edo Liturgical Group, the Iyase said that there was a deliberate attempt to scheme Bini-speaking priests out of things by deliberately sending them abroad in the guise of training and replacing them with Igbo priests. |
Mother of Mrs Patience Jonathan yesterday died in a ghastly motor accident around Elele part of the East West road while on her way to Bayelsa state. A source who spoke on the incident said she was popularly called Sese, adding that her remain had since been deposited at Kpaima mortuary in Diobu area of Port Harcourt. SESE when interpreted in Okrika language it simply means mother. Details were hazy at press time. When Vanguard called the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Angela Agabe she said she had no signal on the incident. According to her, if the mother of the President’s wife was involved in an accident it would not be hidden, adding that the Police would have been contacted long ago. A source from Okrika who spoke to the Vanguard said the deceased might not be the biological mother of Mrs Jonathan, adding that the first lady probably took her as a mother “I am not sure she was the mother. But she probably chose to call her mother”, the source said. Effort to get the state government comment on the sad incident was not fruitful as text messages sent to the mobile line of the Chief Press secretary to the governor, Mr Dave Iyofor and the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs Ibim Semenitari were yet to be responded to. |

Soni Daniel, Regional Editor, North, Chris Ochayi Northern youths, yesterday, took issue up with the Inspector General of Police and the Presidency, asking them to tender a public apology to the four northern governors, who were attacked by political thugs opposed to the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, last week as well as threaten reprisal attack. It will be recalled that some riotous youths suspected to have been sponsored, pelted stones on the covey of Amaechi and his visiting colleagues from Jigawa, Niger, Kano and Adamwa states, damaging some vehicles in the process. They placard-bearing elements also asked the visitors to leave the state, as they were not welcome. But in their first reaction to the development, northern youths demanded an urgent sack of the Rivers Police Commissioner for turning a blind eye to the assault on the five governors while in Rivers State. The youths under the aegis of Arewa Youth Forum and Northern Youth Congress noted with regrets that the attack of their governors in Port Harcourt, which was premeditated, could lead to a North-South conflict if not well handled. The National President of the Arewa Youths Forum, Alhaji Gambo Gujungu, described the attack on the four northern governors by the sponsored Rivers politicians as an assault on the people of the region and an attempt to provoke a north-south crisis. Gujungu demanded that the CP who said he was on top of the situation in Rivers State and the Inspector General of Police should explain to the nation why some thugs should be allowed to descend on visiting governors all in a bid to protect the interest of a faction in the Rivers crisis. “It is the view of AYF that the attack on the four visiting northern governors and Amaechi was premeditated and targeted as humiliating them so as to provoke a North-South conflict so as to pave the way for the President, who is an interested party in the crisis, to declare a state of emergency in the state. “We therefore, demand an open apology from all the actors, who set out to inflict bodily injury on our sons during their innocuous visit to Rivers State. Failure to do so, we might be compelled to confront top-ranking officials of the government we consider as being ‘unfriendly’ to the north. The group asked the Presidency to take urgent steps to end the crisis in Rivers State, as it would not do him or those he considers as his enemies any good at the end of the day. On his part, the National Coordinator of the NYC, Abdulmumini Tijani, asked the Presidency to allow Amaechi to perform his functions as the duly elected chairman of the NGF without and orchestrated intimidation harassment. Tijani warned the Plateau State Governor, Da jang, who is trying to usurp the seat from Amaechi through the backdoor, to desist forthwith from parading himself as the NGF leader, so as to save the nation avoidable embarrassment. The group warned that all the elements, who have elected to persecute the Rivers State Governor Amaechi to desist from such action or be ready to face the wrath of the Nigerian people. The NYC asked the controversial Rivers CP, Mbu Joseph Mbu, to urgently resign from his office for taking side in the crisis and denting the image of the police force in the process. “ For Mbu’s admitted nonchalance, negligence of duty and total complicity in the crimes perpetrated against the governor of Rivers State, the state House of Assembly and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the CP should resign from office forthwith. “In the event that he Mbu remains adamant and refuses to resign, we call on the IG to sack him and subject him to thorough investigation. The northern group also called on the five lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly who attempted to impeach the Speaker for pecuniary reasons to be recalled and be prosecuted for fighting and brutality. “They said, “President Goodluck Jonathan should break his silence; condemn these desterdaly acts of brigandage being visited on the good person of the governor of the state and the people and to deal with the security breaches in Rivers State. “The Nigeria Police should tender an unreserved apology to the four Northern governors for permitting the breakdown of law and order, which led to the attacks on the governors. “In view of the fact the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, has diverted his from minding his duty and concentrated his efforts on the local Rivers politics while the entirty of the educational sector has been brought to a grinding halt, he should resign forthwith,” NYC demanded. But Wike fired back at the group, saying that they were ignorant of his role as a Minister of State for Education, questioning what their interest was in Rivers politics. Accusing them of being sponsored by politicians, the Minister asked them to desist from toying with his name, as he had done his best to resolve the ASUP strike and was talking with ASUU to ensure the resumption of lectures in the universities across the country. “If these people have nothing to do, they should stop moving about and insulting people who are working for the country,” Wike said. |
