While we are both capitalists, privatising health care and education does not sit right with me. That is something I have wanted to converse with you - your penchant for privatising health care and education. Nigerians don't even have the money to pay for these services at public hospitals. Would they be able to pay when it is privatised? The same holds true for education. Unlike the US, where there are equally good public universities, most countries' top universities are publicly owned. So, why advocate for privatisation?

Let's look at Brazil, where education is free till the university level. There ought to be subsidies in certain sectors, of which education and health care are paramount.

IbeOkehie:

I know I've said it before - I have no solutions for healthcare and primary education. Healthcare in particular is an unavoidable risk and completely independent of voluntary demand. So they're not fit for the free market.

It's clear however that Black Africans, in this case Nigerians, can't organize a socialist healthcare system and the evidence is ALL of Nigeria's history since 1960. We just don't have what it takes and even the UK and Canada are having problems with their socialist healthcare system. So we have to try ANOTHER option, which is completely profit driven, capitalist and free market. What other option do we have? I'd like to read your take.

Good Luck to Nigerians

Not everyone will have same economic purchasing power to procure healthcare services be it free market or otherwise.
The priority should be quality which free market has the potential to deliver.

I reckon other players will tap in with solutions to cater for the economically disadvantaged populace via healthcare schemes and credit system.

The major focus is the needed reforms to guide the industry modus operandi.

Tbh, I am in-between.
I can't totally criticize those leaving nor call those staying back stupid.
Moving has it's merits and demerits just like staying back.
It is just for someone to weigh his options and know the pros and cons of their actions and ready to face it but generally, the advantage of going to western countries is -
1. Foreign certificate gives you better job with higher earnings.
2. Strong passport that won't make you to be wasting money on visas or delays or visa denial.
3. Their economy is so developed that you can virtually work in any sector and live a good life and can easily get a good job without connections or letters from kings/senator/governor/local government chairman just to get a decent job.

Those 2 points above are good points of moving.
In my career, using a Nigerian certificate has really cost me a lot and slowed down my progress and I know and see my colleagues with foreign certificates getting promoted faster than me and even earning better pay at the same level.

tensazangetsu20:

Lol this used to be true those days but men it doesn't fly anymore. There are Nigerians who didn't even go to school who are working in big companies I know people in tech who didn't have any degree and are working at places like Google and Facebook and these are Nigerians o. The world now is mostly about the skills and value you have to offer and not necessarily the school you went. Yes, going to a top school helps but how many Nigerians migrating are going to top schools.

Strong passport is good but strong passport without money is useless lol. My target for a strong passport is strictly based on economic activities and not necessarily travelling. There are people with these passports who can't travel cause they are broke. Sapa is a worldwide phenomenon.

Economy is developed yes but no one is going to hand over anything to you. Believe me, you have to show and prove competence. There are people abroad in good countries who can't still get jobs but these time around you can't blame anyone like tunubu or phcn grin grin

I.T space constitutes a part of the global employment index by sector and not its entirety. This means that there are many other industries (think blue-collar gigs) where physical certifications is still a commanding factor.

One of those is the maritime industry where some STCW courses abroad has more chances of getting you onboard and also influence promotion chances (depending on experience level) compared to Nigerian certs.

Bless you for this brother...

No necessarily young. But experienced, driven and a determined visionary with a thirst to see the nation he represents flourish...

And who says whatever we're practicing over here is democracy?

SMH

There’s a tendency of high commitment levels to any given project/assigment if the person/team stands to see the project come to life.

By young (which is relatively subjective) I mean a leadership team less than 50years with vision and mental tact.

If we streamline this the Nigeria for instance, you will agree with me that the decadence will take decades of reengineering to get the country back on track.

I read on the newspaper long ago about a foreign firm that wanted to partner with Imo state government by investing billions of dollars into Adapalm for development and management of the palm plantation.
The projection was that the partnership alone has the potential to expand job creation from 800 to over 2,000 employees.

I think it was during Gov. Rochas’s 2nd tenure. They were turned down because the business proposal ROI was going to take longer and the present administration will be likely out of office by then.
Today, the plantation is laying in ruins.

So true...

Its just as if they hold some secret against African leaders to make these so-called leaders become so obedient and subservient.

If not...
How can we at our level in this pyramid be seeing these things and they couldn't? undecided
And even if it's brought to their attention, they'll always ignore such talk and doggedly continue on the chosen path of the ones they look up to?

E no add up...

The little I know about Qaddafi shows he was different, only he was forced into a confrontation he would never survive...

If it was the world before now, its understandable, but the leash is so loose in today's world (as I see it)

African leaders too lazy abeg. None wants to put in the required work, only want to maintain the status quo, after all them and those with them would live lavishly either way. No thoughts of glory at all..

Awón oni yéyé

I reckon with your submission. Mental laxity and lack of visionary leadership contributed hugely to the present state of the African society and political ecosystem.

The West understood early enough how the world works; it’s similar to the animal kingdom where the strong rules and the feeble follow. They took advantage and played this to their strengths. Made geographical advancement and strategically established colonies.
Then after setting the pace for development in their region, they came up with codes of conduct, principles and trading agreements via UN, UNICEF, ICC, . . . to secure their loot.

In the grand scheme of things the most powerful almost and always rule. Lately, there’s been a paradigm shift of power from military strength to trade wars and control of vital natural resources and infrastructure.

My concern is that the African leadership has no balls to upstage and take their destiny into their hands. They have no zeal to correct the mistakes of centuries past when they sold their countrymen for mirrors, gunpowder and tobacco. It’s a shame!

Back to the present. Africa needs young visionary leadership but sadly, democracy makes it difficult.

Handing over your leash to another master ain’t freedom.
The real flex is being in total control of your affairs without external interference. Sadly, no African government have had a taste of what sovereignty entails.

Guy don't bring sentiments because you are an igbo guy. Most igbo men feel inferior of themselves when it comes to love and care.

Especially why, most igbo girls are too greedy, even the broke igbo girls, feels entitled to marrying a rich man. Igbo women, have the highest "single" rating in Nigeria, unlike anyother tribe in Nigeria.

Why? They are all waiting for an odogwu.

This is unlike Yoruba men, a yoruba man takesgood care of him care before he even thinks of his wife, but definitely his children. Depending on how he earns.

But an igbo man, can be wearing one trouser for 2 years, just to ensure that his wife, wear a better clothe. And most other women would say they would like to marry an igbo man, and these igbo men would be smiling unknown to them it's because of their mumu, when it comes to love matters.

Guy this thing am saying are facts, check the statistics of most successful igbo men, they lived their whole lives, in principles just to secure the billions his wive, and children are flexing. While he dies at latest 63 or 65.

Can you please point me to articles or journals that validates your claims?

So, in your opinion, wwwtortoise, why are Igbo women at the centre of feminism and lesbianism in Nigeria?

Chimamandan Adichie as the face of feminism in contemporary and of Igbo descent gives a false projection of Igbo women as being the Centre of feminism.

I could easily counter that by saying that Funmilayo Ransom Kuti is the pioneer of feminism in Nigeria.

As with all noble ideologies, core values are being watered down with passage of time. Cultism, Feminism, religion. . . just name it.

Can you point me to statistics that underline your assertion that Igbo women are at the center of feminism in Nigeria?

Depends on the demographic population of the Igbo men you mean.

Most uneducated/businessmen/artisans in every population have this dating trait. It’s easy to see that what they lack in finesse, they tend to makeup with show of love using money.

Some say na because Igbo laws and traditions are patriarchal, but which culture in Nigeria isn't? I discussed this with a friend who was born and bred in the East. In his opinion, Igbos like to adopt anything in vogue. The culture encourages it, and with Christianity being a liberal religion, it becomes easier. The problem with this adoption is that people also adopt nonsense without considering their environment and long-term effects.

Anyway, good luck to men who marry modern Igbo women.

Without mincing words I would say the recapitalization thing is a good move to restore investor confidence and attract FDI.

But knowing the FG and her soiled reputation, I will remain skeptical and observe how it unfolds and events that’ll follow.

Only if the recap will give Nigeria a spot in the top 10 banks in Africa by market cap.

IbeOkehie:
Those asking why NLNG sells in dollars...it's a matter of law and regulation. I'm not sure of all the particulars, but generally there are two legal kinds of gas in Nigeria -

1) Domestic or domgas

2) World gas

NLNG was formed to service the world market Because NLNG is controlled by PRIVATE investors AND the world market price of natural gas is UNREGULATED, the company has been a great success. NLNG has been the most profitable company on Nigeria for decades.

Side note - it was President Babangida that put the reforms in place to make NLNG possible. It was supposed to be a fully owned Nigerian government company but IBB chose PRIVATE led investment structure as under SAP policy.

There's a 100% Government owned company called Nigeria Gas Company that handles the DOMESTIC GAS market, which is is PRICE REGULATED and subsidized. They're the ones who are supposed to supply cooking gas at a subsidized and affordable price. 🙄

Do I need to say any more? Nigeria Gas Company is an inefficient, corrupt and moribund entity just like every other thing owned by government.....Ajaokuta Steel, Federal Universities, NIPOST, NNPC , Federal Mortgage Bank, TCN that suppresses electricity supply...and on and on.

It appears that NNLG is taking over the functions of NGC. Socialism, price regulation, subsidies and government ownership is KILLING NIGERIA.

The ONLY solution to the Nigeria Crisis is FREEDOM...frre markets, socio- economic and political freedom. That's all. Do it or die, nobody is begging you.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

It’s refreshing to read your inputs on this space.
I have gained some good valuable knowledge and insights doing so.

Okay, maybe NLC want FG to double her loan request hustle from IMF.

Most states are not even paying the present minimum wage of 30k or so.

That proposal is crap because it will only yield hyperinflation.

Instead negotiate for :
- per hour remuneration based on sector.

- prohibition of outsourcing white collar and blue collar jobs to expatriates; with exception to highly skilled labor which cannot be filled internally. However, there’ll be a local understudy with probation period to move up the corporate ladder.
