playmode: Secondly why a mere 700MW dam? Why not buy 2 or 3 turbines so that the dam can at least generate 1400MW or 2100MW ,this donkey is a big Joke.In South Africa the minimum power generating plant they build generates at least 4800MW but in Nigeria odenathan builds a 700MW dam.FRESH AIR bunch of morons!

SA does NOT have a power plant of 4800mw yet, its still a project, based on coal not hydro. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_power_stations_in_South_Africa

Hydro is cheaper to maintain, because you are not burning fossil fuels, but it is limited by the size of the water body being used.

When the dam is completed, the turbines can be changed with a higher capacity ones when I becomes available. Like kainji should be done soon.

The most important thing is to build it.
PoliticsRe: Jonathan Flags-Off Building Of 700MW Hydro-power Dam by wy2000(m): 9:36am On May 29, 2013
One_Naira: GEJ i applaud this but question, why did you choose Niger for the project?
Niger meets the exact conditions for sighting of dam. It can't be done everywhere.

Also remember that the plan has already been done since 1980s, just starting implementation.
Its a good thing that he continued the plan, instead of starting a new one!

OPEYEMI AD: Kindly correct the Program please
like i said before, its been a while i have done a basic programming. also my last basic program was VBasic.
You will have to find the correct syntax for IF, ELSEIF on QB. I simply used my algorithm

Cls
Dim x
Dim y
For x = 2 To 1000
For y = 2 To (x - 1)
If x Mod y = 0
Then Exit For
ElseIf y = (x - 1)(syntax error ELSE WITHOUT IF)
Then Print x
End If
Next y
Next x
ProgrammingRe: Basic Programmer, Help Me Solve This Question (solved) by wy2000(m): 8:21pm On May 25, 2013
I love the fact that you made an effort. That is how you learn.

So I will help out a bit, even though its more than 10years i have written a Basic code.

Well you will be right to say that 1 is not a prime because the definition if a prime is "those numbers GREATER than 1 that aren’t multiples of any number smaller than themselves and greater than 1;"

Cls
Dim x
Dim y
For x = 2 To 1000
For y = 2 To (x - 1)
If x Mod y = 0
Then Exit For
ElseIf y = (x - 1)
Then Print x
End If
Next y
Next x

NB: I have not tested it yet.

OPEYEMI AD: yes am studying computer science
While not write the program for me leave the Algorithm alone

from Your Algorithm you stated that Num = 1 mean while 1 is not a prime number
you said i should divide num by all the numbers between 1 and num (how am i going to write that e.g LET c = num / ?

Thanks for the Algorithm
I didnt write if because i want you to do it.
If you really want the code, you can google it. That will be a shame as a CS student.

Also Algorithm is more important in CS that the programming itself. Its language agnostic.

1 is a prime no. check this formular, its a bit technical but not for a CS student. (that is why Math is compulsory)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formulas_for_primes

To answer you question, you need a nested loop.

eg

num = 1
While num is <= 1000
do
for i 1 to num
do
----

To explain...
1 -- can only be divided by 1 and itself (ie 1) = prime
2 -- divide by 1 and 2, (there only 2 numbers btw 1 and 2) = prime
3 -- divide by 1,2 and 3 (the number 2 cannot divide 3 without a remainder) = prime
4 -- divide by 1,2,3 and 4 (2 divides 4 without a remainder) == not prime

Do for every num...

Hard? It should be, but that you learning programming... smiley

I need a python programmer for some projects.
The projects are web based, like ecommerce sites. So I need experience in development and maintaining a python based ecommerce site.

OPEYEMI AD: write a program to display Prime number from 1 to 1000
You can easily get the solution by googling, but you will miss the lesson here.
I presume you are studying computer science?
One of the best way to learn programming is to understand the problem and break it in small solution.
EG. In your case, what is a prime no...It is a no that can *only* be divided by 1 and itself!

I will provide the algorithm, while you try and do the actual code.

So the algorithm is

Num = 1
While number is less than 1000
Do
Divide num by all the numbers between 1 and num
If any of the divisions has a remainder of zero.
Then its not a prime.
Else print the num as prime number.

angelchyke: Sometime ago, last month, a friend of my in the Computer Science came by my place, to visit and you know, "shack garri". AFter he was done, satisfying the whims of his belly, he told me that he just doesn't get. They had been given an assignment in PASCAL programming. This is a guy that started learning programming privately, with C#.

But if I should throw this to the Nigerian community here on Nairaland, what do our universities have to offer us in the study and research of computer science. PASCAL? Can they favourably compete with the foreign counterparts in the other universities. Naija guys and girls abroad, your unprejudiced judgements will go a long way,
You are oversimplifying the value of a Computer Science education. Computer science is not only programming. It is a very vast field and programming is just one part, albeit an important part because you need to to demonstrate concept by programming.

I have not heard of any school in the world that produces super star programmers in computer science class. A CS who wants to be a programmer will have the tool to get better on it!

I will refer you to this article by Altucher who went to one of the best schools in the world. http://www.techcrunch.com/2011/11/12/10-things-entrepreneurs-dont-learn-in-college/

I disagree with you on java preference. You get more php programmers in Nigeria, which is a big problem because its a lousy language to learn good programming principles.

Mgbadike80: Nigerians love big words like africas largest tv network, africa largest political party, now we have graduated global competing. What a self deceit. I can boldly say that 99% of nigerian university computer lecturers have never built a commercial software in their entire careers yet they go about appending phd and professor to their names. The student are not only totally deficient but are ignorant that they are deficient. I will rather study applied maths in a nigerian university than computer science. Mmadụ ana eji aka ya, aghori onwe ya? Ndi ara.
I seriously doubt that up to 50% of CS lecturer s in US have built a commercial software.
CS is much more than software. I agree that many of our lecturers are deficient though, but luckily, IT is a field that gives the student the opportunity to learn on their own.
Many CS grad in Nigeria are plain lazy and we don't have an entrepreneur culture to spur on the rest.

mikeansy: in case you dont know, you are not more patriotic than anyone else. If you love your country that much you will question why what seems to work alright in Ghana, South Africa and Kenya can not seem to work alright in Nigeria. Yes Kenya had violence in 2007 but they have a 45year history of democratic process and stability. Trust me our political and democratic process is surely not in the same class as kenya or South Africa. Now if you love your country as much as you claim you will admit that and seek to improve. The way Yaradua emerged PDP candidate for President in 2007 or How Jonathan emerged the PDP candidate in 2011; and the way they went on to win the General election. if we had a robust democratic electoral process it would have exposed the fact that Jonathan Goodluck is a half-baked politician who is not brilliant enough to run an LGA let alone a whole country and I stand by this argument. You can repeat the noise about bashing Nigeria 10 more times if you like. But anyone who love this country will agree that how we do politics is a disgrace and most times the leaders that emerge are the dumbest amongst us!!!!
You are mixing up your argument, maybe doesn know the true meaning of democracy. FYI democratic election is simple who gets the most votes, not necessarily the BEST candidate. In democracy, even a fool can win election, if he can convince moer people to vote for him/her.

I agree with Symphony that you can praise Kenyan election without bashing Nigeria. Kenya has more democratic experience than Nigeria, but based on what current situations on ground, they are NOT THAT much better!

Kenyans voted based on ethnic sentiment, just like Nigerians did in 2011. But Jonathan just like Uhuru now won fair and square.
I disagree that South African democratic process is better than ours. As a matter of fact, I prefer Jonathan than Zuma!

If you really hate Nigeria like that, there are other countries like Niger or Chad!

FamilyRe: Raising Kids Who Do Not Beg by wy2000(m): 2:19am On Feb 25, 2013
davidylan: The irony is that even Jesus Christ in the bible had to ask others for food and shelter on occasion. this "i am an island to myself" mentality is even more dangerous than "begging". I will train my kids to be contented with what they have... but i will also train them to remember that no condition is permanent and whenever it lies in your power to help someone less fortunate, do not hesitate to do so with all joy. There are some who "beg" out of greed, but the vast majority do so because they do have a genuine need.

I hope one day many of you "i can never beg" disciples do not get into life and death situations where you need the help of others. Hopefully they wont use your own "principles" to deny you critical help in your own time of need.
The irony also is that the bible discourages begging. If we all read where the bible said that if better to be the giver than the receiver, we will beg less.

Begging should be the last resort. And used sparingly, mostly is life threatening situations.

If we all train our kids not to beg, it makes begging rare so that only the really needy will do it.

The OP is not saying that she wants to teach her kids not to give, but NOT to beg. I gave myself as an example of being trained not to beg. My parents taught me to give, in fact, I give so much I am now being warned by my relations that am being taking advantage of.
Even at that, I don't beg, and still find it hard to ask for help, even when I need it. EG at work!

I make a distinction between begging and asking for help. Help is part of humanity, and is one I won't decline.

Using the analogy from OP, if I hear that my kid is asking for a biscuit, I will skin him/her alive. I never asked anybody for biscuit as a kid. Heck, I didn't even accept a gift of one from kids!

davidylan: Its hard to understand since you grew up with parents who could afford your needs AND wants. There are some whose parents cannot afford even their basic needs due to no fault of theirs. There are able-bodied people who are just not as lucky... try to lend a helping hand where you can. As a student in college, i had friends who could not afford anything and we would share whatever little i had. By the end of the week we would all be broke but it was a fun experience. till today (over 8 yrs since we graduated), many of them still search me out to say thank you for the time when i was willing to share with them in their time of need. I dont consider it a huge deal but it is good to know that when others needed help, i was able to do the best i could. You never know who is blessing you in their prayers for that congo of garri you gave them 10 yrs ago.

Today, those same people i could have called "beggars" are doing very well. Even the good book says we should be kind one to another. If you cant afford to give, say so politely and move on. Things like this are not worth starting a thread over...
I disagree with you, begging is a mental state and not determined by how rich or poor you are. My grandfather was soo broke he had only one "church" clothe for about 3 months, but he never begged and will not allow his kids to. He proudly said he achieved everything he did with his sweat and God.

That was translated to my dad who will skin us alive I'd he hears that. He never wanted any help even when offered by his richer siblings! Some of our relations had to raise serious complaints before we even agreed to receive gift from them.
During my school days, I learnt to manage my things because I know I won't beg if it finishes, but I still end up sharing it with others.
Up till now, I find it hard to ask for anything. My friends used to accuse me of being arrogant. I find it humiliating to beg, so I want to keep my pride.

Its about training yourselves not to need what you don't have! My parents knocked it into us and I thank then for that.

I help people when they ask for help, but I hate it when they beg. Unfortunately, I have noticed that I get begged more, cos I don't beg. People think you don't beg because you have enough!
I agree with the OP, we need to teach our kids, not to beg. It will serve them well. Luckily, I have a template.... They way I was raised!

he has pictures, even did a traditional wedding, what more are you looking for?

overseas, dont they give people stay once you are married to their citizen?
US and UK deny people visa, even for spousal visit. I have friends who had the issue (and some still having it).

The husband should have had a valid Visa if he was visiting her. Besides, Pictures doesnt mean the marriage is legal and valid.
Also visa application have their timelines, it wont be hurried because he wants to visit now.

The husband is from UK, which doesnt exactly treat holders of Nigerian passport with respect! So Nigerian normally reciprocate.

hmm, nkan be, what kind of situation is this?

will prezo be there?

should prezo be the one attending her funeral in the capacity of spouse when her husband says he was married to her for 8 years? huh

not saying prezzo should not attend, just that it looks weird if the declared husband isnt allowed into the country.

unless there's something involved which the rest of us arent privy to.
Nigerians must really have a low view of their country to think that any tom, dick and harry should be allowed into the country.
Have you gone to embassy of other countries and seen Nigerian being denied visa, many with valid papers and with spouses?

Nigeria has every right to deny him Visa. Why does he have a valid visa if he was married to her.

Prezzo is an African, and Kenyan too. Kenya grants Nigerians Visa at port of entry, I have been a recipient countless times!!
It is called reciprocity in international relations. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reciprocity_(international_relations)
