The move to ensure steady electricity supply in the country has received a boost as Cummins Cogeneration Limited and Sapele Power Plc have signed a Power Purchase Agreement in London, the United Kingdom. The Chairman, Cummins Cogeneration Limited, Mr. Deepak Khilnani, said the pact was part of the company’s plans to build one of Africa’s largest gas-fired power plants of 300 megawatts capacity. He said in a statement on Thursday that the partnership came just weeks after Cummins signed an agreement for a similar investment in Ghana. Khilnani expressed hope that the synergy between the two firms had the capacities that would deliver a clean and sustainable long-term solution for Nigerians. He said, “We are excited about our partnership with Sapele Power Plc because this project will be operated using Cummins combined heat and power gas generator sets, which emit up to five times less nitrogen oxide than diesel generator sets and near-zero particulate matter. “In addition to this, it offers a 48 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional steam turbine engines, which makes this a highly efficient and environmentally sustainable project. “Currently, Sapele Power Plc operates Nigeria’s second largest power plant with an installed capacity of about 1,020MW, capable of meeting the energy needs of around 750,000 homes at full capacity. Upon this partnership, the plant will distribute electricity generated from the plant directly to the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc, supplying millions of homes and businesses with clean power.” Expressing delight in the signing of the agreement, the Chairman, Sapele Power Plc, Anthony Onoh, said, “We know that Nigerians have high expectations from the privatised power sector and that is why the company has a strong focus on sustainable power generation focused on capacity recovery from its existing assets, as well as expansion from a mix of projects, which will double the plant’s installed capacity within the next three years. “The project will be split into two phases; the first phase is expected to be completed and exporting power by July 2016; and the second phase is for inauguration by December 2017. Upon completion, the project will supply approximately three billion kilowatt-hour of electricity to the Nigerian grid per annum, which is approximately 10 per cent of the total production today. “We are innovatively rising to the challenge of improving performance at our generating station as well as integrating more renewable energy into the grid.” Source: http://www.punchng.com/cummins-sapele-power-plan-300mw-plant/

The Federal Government is planning to reduce the amount of borrowing needed to fund the 2016 budget from funds mopped up from government agencies through the implementation of the Treasury Single Account. The 2016 budget, which has been submitted by President Muhammadu Bubari to the National Assembly, has a deficit of N2.2tn. The deficit, according to the fiscal document, is to be financed through the borrowing of N1.84tn made up of domestic borrowing of N984bn and foreign borrowing of N900bn. There are anxiety in government circles that the deficit may rise to about N3tn as a result of the global drop in oil price, which is currently selling below the $38 per barrel budget benchmark price. But speaking on Monday at a workshop on TSA for the accountants-general of the states in Abuja, the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, said the over N2.2tn, which has so far been recovered from government agencies through the TSA, would assist in reducing the volume of borrowing. She said the current issues and challenges surrounding cash flow management had re-enforced the need to ensure that scarce resources at the disposal of the federal, state and local governments were prudently and efficiently managed. Adeosun described the workshop as apt and timely, as it came at a time when the global economic downturn was creating challenges that demanded efficient and effective management of cash resources. She explained that the TSA was an essential reform for any government wishing to pursue fiscal sustainability and prudent management of its resources. Outlining some of the benefits of the TSA, the minister said it would increase accountability and transparency, improve the processing of payments and collections, and reduce borrowing costs. Adeosun said, “The global economic challenges, which are affecting our nation, demand optimum efficiency in the management of public funds. These objectives require an overhaul of the financial management approaches adopted to meet financial obligations on time and ensure that cost effective financial support is provided to public institutions.” Source:http://www.punchng.com/fg-to-cut-n1-84tn-borrowing-through-tsa-recovery/ |

Kayode Idowu The Nigerian Air Force has conducted 286 air operations on Boko Haram targets in the last one month, it said on Saturday. Addressing a press conference in Maiduguri, the Deputy Theatre Commander (Air) of the counter-insurgency operation in the North-East (Operation Lafiya Dole), Air Vice Marshall Isiaka Amao said the air component of the counter-insurgency operation has conducted 286 “operational sorties” against Boko Haram terrorists targets from December 25, 2015 till date. He explained that this translates to 157,000 Square Kilometres of operational coverage, equivalent “to the total land mass of South Korea, Portugal and Togo.” He said this also translates to “a total of 536 hours 21 minutes were flown by various platforms engaged in the operations, expending 316,637.5 litres of aviation fuel which amounts to N60,376,912, excluding the cost of maintenance and armament expended.” He said the operations which was aimed at further degrading the terrorist group, also was targeted towards surveillance at locating the abducted Chibok girls and other citizens that may have been abducted by the terrorist group. Amao said successes were recorded as during the operations there was destruction of newly discovered Boko Haram leadership hideouts, enclaves, logistics support bases and infrastructure. He insisted that this led to the terrorist group fleeing Sambisa Forest to near locations due to aerial bombardment and has denied them the opportunity to regroup. He said that during one of the air strikes on Christmas Day in Sambisa Forest, the leadership meeting of the insurgency group was disrupted and over 15 persons were killed. He disclosed that apart from Sambisa Forest, air strikes have been conducted on other hideouts including Gawa, Walasa, Kote, Alagarno, Talala, Alafa North, Yele, Arra, Dure, Ajigin, Takwalla and Kumshe. He said close battlefield air interdiction and close air support were provided for Nigerian troops at Gadzama and Ngwalimiri Source:http://www.punchng.com/286-air-operations-conducted-on-boko-haram-hideouts-since-december/ |
