Recently there had been rumors speculating NYSC monthly allowance would increase from 19,800 to N50,000. But FG has dismissed this, saying there is no truth to it.
Minister for Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige has dismissed reports that the Federal Government was planning to increase the monthly allowance for youth corps members.

Rumours had been rife weeks ago that the Federal Government was planning to increase the monthly allowance from N19,800 to N50,000, but Ngige has said there’s no truth in it.

He said in a press briefing in Anambra that the Federal Government wouldn’t increase the allowance of corps members without first coming out with a minimum wage for the Nigerian workers.

3. Misplaced apostrophes

Adding "apostrophe 's'" to a noun indicates possession. A common area where people misuse apostrophes is with last names.

4. i.e. and e.g.

These two abbreviations are often used interchangeably, but their meanings are different. I.e. is Latin for id est, which translates to "that is." Thus, i.e. should be used to clarify something.

It can informally be replaced with "in other words." "He is training for the marathon before work, i.e., he puts in over a dozen miles each morning."

E.g. is short for the Latin "exemplī grātiā," which means "for example."

"I've recently started cooking with local ingredients, e.g., tomatoes and corn."

5. First come, first served
The proper way to write this expressions is "first come, first served," because the people in the scenario will be served in a specific order. The idiom is often mistakenly written as "first come, first serve."

6. Invite/invitation

Formally, "invite" is a verb, and "invitation" is a noun.
However, the English language is constantly evolving, and Merriam-Webster now allows for "invite" to be used as a noun as well.

Thus, both "I haven't responded to her invite yet" and "I haven't responded to her invitation yet" are correct, but the former may annoy some of your more grammar purist friends.

7. Pique your interest

People can often distinguish between the homophones "peek," which means "to look," and "peak," which refers to the top of a mountain or a similar shape.

However, "pique" is used in the phrase "pique your interest," because "pique" means to excite or energize. Thus, if something "piques your interest," that means that it excites you.

8. Brands and 'they'

A brand is a singular entity, thus is takes the pronoun "it." "Kleenex is my favorite brand because they have the softest tissues" is incorrect, since Kleenex is a singular noun.

The sentence should read, "Kleenex is my favorite brand because it has the softest tissues."

9. Piece or peace of mind?

As "peace" and "piece" are homophones, or words with different spellings and meanings that sound the same, be sure to use the correct spelling to be clear on your meaning. "Peace of mind" refers to serenity. To give someone a "piece of your mind" is to harshly express a concern.


10. Due diligence

To do your due diligence on something is to do a very thorough job. However, "due diligence" is often mistakenly written as "do diligence."

"He exercised due diligence in preparation for the case" is the correct, as it means that the subject went to great lengths to get ready.

Nigerian winger Victor Moses has announced his retirement from international football at the age of just 27, in order to focus on his career with his club, Chelsea.

Suspected kidnapper who slept off during an operation and was arrested in a failed kidnap attempt in Owo is dead following complications from a high intake of tramadol, Police in Ondo state reveals.

Research has found how blue light generated from smartphones, laptops and other digital devices can damage the eyes and speed up blindness.

Research by the University of Toledo in the US has revealed that prolonged exposure to blue light triggers poisonous molecules to be generated in the eye’s light-sensitive cells that can cause macular degeneration – an incurable condition that affects the middle part of vision.

Blue light, which has a shorter wavelength and more energy compared with other colours, can gradually cause damage to the eyes.

Dr Ajith Karunarathne, an assistant professor in the university’s department of chemistry and biochemistry, said: “We are being exposed to blue light continuously and the eye’s cornea and lens cannot block or reflect it.


“It’s no secret that blue light harms our vision by damaging the eye’s retina. Our experiments explain how this happens, and we hope this leads to therapies that slow macular degeneration, such as a new kind of eye drop.”

Macular degeneration, which affects around 2.4% of the adult population in the UK, is a common condition among those in their 50s and 60s that results in significant vision loss.

It is caused by the death of photoreceptor, ie light-sensitive cells, in the retina.

17-year-old girl, Ramatu Tafida, has chopped off the manhood of her 25-year-old boyfriend, Abdullahi Sabo in Jigawa State, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence (NSCDC) said yesterday.

Spokesman for the organisation in the state, Adamu Shehu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse yesterday  the incident occurred in Babura Local Government Area.

Shehu said the victim is a resident of Kofar Gabas and a teacher at Government Girls Secondary School Babura engaged under N-Power.


“The incident occurred on Thursday in Babura when the attention of our officers was drawn by a good Samaritan who informed them that some youths were about to lynch a girl in Kofar Arewa, the residence of the suspect.

“Immediately the officers swung into action and went to the scene and whisked the girl away to the office for safety, but they still followed her.

“It was upon reaching the office that we realised what led to the whole matter.

“Ramlatu confessed to have used a knife to cut off the manhood of her husband-to-be.

“According to her, Abdullahi is the love of her life and he was even introduced to her family members and has equally given the sum of N30, 000 as an introduction fee.

“And because of that, she was free to be with him almost all the time. As a result they became too intimate that they engaged in sexual relationship.

“However, Ramlatu later learnt that the victim planned to dump her for another girl since he had already known her as a woman. And that was what made her to plan and execute her attack,” he said.

Regarding the tragic incident which nine corpers reportedly drowned over the weekend, The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in Taraba has said the body of another corps member has been recovered from the Taraba River.

The recovery brings the number of bodies recovered so far to eight out of nine.
The scheme said that it was working on the recovery of the remaining drowned corps member still missing before releasing details of all the nine corps members involved the unfortunate incident.

Public Relations Officer of the NYSC in Taraba, Mr. Odeh Innuma, disclosed this in an interview with Punch Nigeria at the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Sibre, near Jalingo.
Innuma, who said one corpse was recovered on Wednesday, bringing the total number of recovered bodies to eight, said the search for the remaining one whose name he simply gave as Godiya from Kaduna State, was still on.

“We have all the details of the nine corps members involved in that unfortunate picnic tragedy, but it is not in our power to release the information to the media now.
“At appropriate time, the Director General of NYSC, Brig. Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, will release detailed information about the corps members and even publish same in national newspapers.
“Just yesterday, the DG sent someone to Gashaka where the incident happened and the person has since returned to Abuja. So, we are all waiting to hear from the DG on the next line of action,” he said.

Our correspondent gathered that the recovered bodies have been evacuated from Gashaka Local Government Area where the incident happened.
The bodies have since been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre in Jalingo, the state capital.

A drunk couple continued to have s*x in a park in Leeds despite police being called by several people and a man confronting them over their actions.

Abubakar Duduwale walked from Yola in Adamawa to Abuja to celebrate the president's victory and withness the inauguration.
Duduwale said in Yola at the onset of the walk that the adventure was to express his joy over the emergence of Buhari as the president of Nigeria.

“The reason why I am trekking from Yola to Abuja is to express my joy and solidarity with President-elect Muhammadu Buhari. “I want to trek from Yola to Abuja to witness the inauguration ceremony of President-elect,” Duduwale was quoted to have said in 2015.

Duduwale, from Yola north local government area of Adamawa and Chamba by tribe, began the journey at Yola Gate on Yola-Numan highway at about 6.30am.

3-month-old baby rescued after being put under trailer by his mother to be crushed.

A 3-month-old baby boy, whose mother allegedly wanted dead, was rescued from beneath a trailer where she put him so he could be crushed.

Aisha Yau, who stays under the popular Kawo bridge in Kaduna, was said to have purposely kept the baby under a trailer’s wheel with the expectation that when the trailer moves, it will crush him.
But the baby was rescued before that could happen, The Nation reports.
It was revealed that after the mother put her baby beneath the truck, she stood to one side and prevented people from carrying the baby while also persuading the driver of the truck to start the engine.

Fortunately, a passerby quickly called the attention of the Kaduna State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hafsat Muhammed, who then rescued the baby from Aisha.

Arsenal Wenger who has been Arsenal Manager since 1996, reveals regret for having sacrificing everything he did. Destiny's child Michelle Williams has checked herself into a mental health facility as solution to her depression.
The 37-year-old Destiny’s Child songstress ‘is getting treated in a facility just outside of Los Angeles’ according to TMZ .
Williams spoke to The Talk last year about her struggles with depression over the years and admitted feeling ‘suicidal’.

In a statement on Tuesday, Michelle wrote: ‘For years I have dedicated myself to increasing awareness of mental health and empowering people to recognize when it’s time to seek help, support and guidance from those that love and care for your wellbeing.’

‘Today I proudly, happily and healthily stand here as someone who will continue to always lead by example as I advocate for the betterment of those in need.’ In October 2017, the singer told The Talk, ‘I’ve been suffering [from depression] since between the age of 13 and 15… at that age I didn’t know what to call it.’

Regarding the alleged forgery of Minister of Finance Kemi Adeosun National Youth Service Corps exemption certificate , The police have stated that they cannot investigate it because there is no formal complaint against her.


The Force spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, in an interview with a Punch correspondent in Abuja, stated that the police were not aware of the allegations against the minister, adding that no one had come forward to lodge a complaint against her.

“There must be a complaint, either written or verbal to us. You must write to a divisional police station or the Commissioner of Police or to the Inspector-General of Police; we have not received any complaint, so we can’t investigate it (allegation of forgery),” Moshood, acting Deputy Commissioner of Police,  stated.
