WebmastersRe: Sites With Dead Social Buttons by yawatide(f): 6:09pm On Jun 17, 2011
Yeah I have seen this a lot and I get ticked off each time I see it.

I have also been asked to add such buttons to sites even when they don't have an account. I simply tell them (including a deputy governor) that I will add it when they create the site. In some cases, I have actually created the pages for them, cos I know that in naija, waiting for such could take, as you said, an eternity.

When, oh when will we stop hiring cronies to do the job, or at least when will the cronies hire competent people to do the job?
WebmastersWho Is The "webmaster" Of Nassnig.org? by yawatide(op): 11:32am On Jun 14, 2011
I was actually impressed when, a day or so after the members were sworn in, I noticed that the new photo of the new speaker was posted on the site. That told me that the site (or so I think) is being maintained by an independent person/body. It didn't occur to me though, to click further than that.

The site is still populated by the former members and is still susceptible to attack.

I therefore call on whoever is responsible for the site (if you are on here, take note. If you are not but someone who knows you is, you are getting this notice through that person) to update the site, for the sake of not making us (as Nigerians and as fellow web developers) look like a joke to the outside world.

All those in favor, say "aye!"
WebmastersRe: Whats Wrong With My Containing Div by yawatide(f): 1:26am On Jun 14, 2011
Your above code won't work in IE because:

1) Anything less than IE8 does not support CSS3, and
2) IE9 is barely scratching the surface, with respect to supporting CSS3

So what can you do?
1) Either practice "graceful degradation" where the page looks good in all compliant browsers but looks "the normal way" in non-compliant browsers, OR

2) You add an IE-specific rule to your rule above like so:
FILTER: DropShadow(Color=#0066cc, OffX=5, OffY=-3, Positive=1);

good luck!

If I were to offer my services as a web development tutor, teaching HTML, CSS, JavaScript and little PHP/MySQL on the side, how much would you be willing to pay me and over what duration?

I have been receiving lots of offers lately and am currently in the logistics-gathering phase.

Only serious answers please.

This is actually a pretty neat app smiley

One thing though:

On your registration form, you are not validating and notifying properly: When I enter bad data, I just get an error notice at the top of the page "error filling out form" but it doesn't show me exactly what fields I didn't fill out properly. I think it would be nice to do this. Don't you think?

WebmastersRe: We Need Help With Driving Traffic To Our Website by yawatide(f): 11:45pm On May 30, 2011
you need to work on your mod rewrites such that a current url like so: http://www.9jatech.com/product-detail.php?p=MzQ3

Will look like so: http://www.9jatech.com/hp-pavillion-laptop

Also, if I replace the "mzq3" from above with an apostrophe, I get a blank page. This isn't good from both a security and a business stand point.

1) What would be your unique selling point(s)? In other words, why would I leave CNN or BBC and come to your site?
2) Slow down the carousel. It is moving so fast (to me) that it is a distraction.

WebmastersRe: Need Help On Html Mailto Form by yawatide(f): 12:28pm On May 29, 2011
hmm, I don't know how this is "broking" your head. All you are to do is copy the above code and paste.

At this point, I am recommending you pay for either a class or 1-on-1 training. You might learn better that way. I am not in a position to offer such services currently so I can't help you, for now. Maybe I will in the future.

fd4: This explains why nothing is happening when you click "submit". I hope you are appreciating why I am making you go through all this. It is for you to learn.

Now, we will start from the "A": Right above "Thank you" in your code below, paste this code:
<?php
$to = "someone@example.com";
$subject = "Test mail";
$message = "Hello! This is a simple email message.";
$from = "someonelse@example.com";
$headers = "From:" . $from;
mail($to,$subject,$message,$headers);
echo "Mail Sent.";
?>

Replace "$to" with your email address. Then, without filling out any form fields (why? you will learn in the next lesson), hit "submit". If you get an email, then you did as you were told (you should get an email from someoneelse@example.com with the message "Hello! this is a simple email message"wink. If not, you didn't do as you were told.

If you get the above to work, the next set of lessons will deal with capturing the entered form information after which, we will delve into validating form information.

good luck!

fd4: Thanks for sharing the code. I guess it got gobbled up by the bot the last time cos I didn't see it.

1) I see the html, which is fine.
2) I see an onsubmit function. Paste the code for the function you are calling (registerform())
3) paste the code for http://frisahost.com/register_process2.php
WebmastersRe: Need Help On Html Mailto Form by yawatide(f): 3:14pm On May 27, 2011
mxx: if you noticed my last post, I explicitly asked to see the code.  It would have been easy to contact him privately or do as you did and ask him to email the code to you.  Doing so wouldn't help him or others who will learn from it.

I started off telling him what to do but based on response, I have concluded that he needs to start from "A", which to me means, let us see both files.  From there, I don't mind holding his hands to ensure that the code works in the end.

At the end of the day, I want to teach him how to fish and not just give him fish.

your code will have to be written in your text editor of choice, be it notepad or dreamweaver. You then upload it to your server via ftp or uploading in your cpanel.

Let's do this: Paste your code here and then we take it from there wink
WebmastersRe: Completing A Social Networking Website by yawatide(f): 4:53pm On May 26, 2011
how do you define "little"?
WebmastersRe: Need Help On Html Mailto Form by yawatide(f): 3:15pm On May 26, 2011
1) Is your website/web host PHP-enabled? If yes, then that is the only way that mailto() will work.

Now, back to the basics:

The "action" attribute of a form is where you tell the form to go. If you say "mailto", then it opens the default email client (outlook in most cases). This approach isn't always good as you are assuming the person has outlook installed and uses it. Also, by using mailto, you are exposing your email address to spammers.

Here is an example form opening tag that will enable you to use PHP's mail():
<form method="post" action="thank-you.php">

Note the "action" part. This tells the form to go to thank-you.php where you will insert and use your PHP code. For trial purposes, add a PHP file in a directory of your choosing, add that file and its path (where applicable) to the "action" attribute then in that file, just add "hello world" in HTML. Then go to your form in a browser, fill out any field and hit submit. If you get redirected to the "thank-you.php" page and you see "hello world", then you are in business. If not, either you don't have a linux account or you aren't referencing the file well.

Send us a url where we can see what you have done, along with the code you are using.

Good luck!
