WebmastersRe: Should Internet Explorer Be Banned by yawatide(f): 11:00am On Sep 09, 2011
Sorry for the multiple posts but, 2 more things to think about:

1) Here is another web stat for august 2011: http://www.w3counter.com/globalstats.php - so which stat is right? Furthermore, how did they get their stats?  For that, scroll to the bottom of their page.  Now, remember what I said above about w3schools' stats.  Noticing a pattern with what I said above?

2) Check the stats for websites you have built, either via cpanel or google analytics.  Then come back to the forum and be honest enough to share your stats.  Sure, not scientific but telling, nonetheless.  I just checked 4 sites that I have google analytics on at random and the average is IE at about 45%.  Opera Mini is actually coming in 2nd, most likely because people are using mobile devices to view those particular sites.

Finally, as you may know, many browsers spoof other browsers in their user agents.  Okay, I am off my soap box now and I actually feel much better about myself grin
WebmastersRe: Should Internet Explorer Be Banned by yawatide(f): 10:49am On Sep 09, 2011
abhosts/afam4eva,

So, I am looking at the source of your stats and I notice it is w3schools. Then I ask myself, "what is their source?" I could be wrong but I would imagine that the target audience for w3schools would most likely be those who either use their site or web developers, hence the high numbers.

Be that as it may, I will stand by what I said: Pretty much every company I have worked for buys web stats from a company called Forrester Research and it is the stats from this research company that drives what/how we code. In other words, no matter how hard a bug may be to fix, if it occurs in > IE7, it has to get fixed. At my recent employer's, 4 or so months ago, we got the latest stats and 70% of the web users are still using > IE7. IE6 dropped to single digits hence stopped coding for it. FF is hovering around 20%.

Bottom line, take it or leave it, majority of the world still uses IE and that will continue to be as long as it comes by default on PCs. Now, with the increase in the use of mobile devices, this may not be the case but until that day comes (again, research says that by 2014, 50% of web users will have mobile devices), it is (sadly) IE all the way.

Final comments:
Over this past weekend, I had a visitor who told me she was having some computer issues. So I go to google to check out what's up. She then asks me, "what is that you are using?" and I tell her "a browser" somewhat sarcastically. To cut a long story short, she says, "I have never heard of 'muckzilla'", to which I tell her that it has been around for a while and that I strongly I advise her to switch. The kicker is that this lady graduated with highest honors in chemistry and is actually very smart. If she didn't know of firefox, I actually found it disturbing. Now ask yourself: How many others do you think are out there like this? I know, this is an unofficial stat but hey, it's telling nonetheless.

Why this post is reminding me of Idris' song where he is riding a horse in Kano like a hausa man, I have no idea tongue

Sorry for the distractions everyone

Freeman,

If not already, get the IE developer toolbar. Not as good as firebug but still very useful in times like this.

Yep, we learn everyday. The day we stop learning is the day we die.
WebmastersRe: Yahoo Ceo - Carol Bartz Fired! by yawatide(f): 4:45pm On Sep 07, 2011
1) Firing someone over the phone is very tacky and unprofessional. If this can happen to a CEO, then no one's job means anything anymore

2) According to the CNN piece I watched on this about an hour ago, yahoo has 600m users. Not bad at all, if you ask me.

3) Sadly, these days it's all about shareholder value so that even if you are profitable, if you don't add to the bottom line, you are at risk.
WebmastersRe: Help Review Www.top10productsandservices.com by yawatide(f): 4:43pm On Sep 07, 2011
Looks like a web host's parked domain page.

No offense, of course.
WebmastersRe: Should Internet Explorer Be Banned by yawatide(f): 12:47pm On Sep 07, 2011
1) When you say you made a "major change", what exactly do you mean?
2) Always adopt a policy of "incremental coding" where you code and test in bits and pieces
3) Always ask your client what his target audience/browser is
4) Like it or not, IE still accounts for at least 70% of the browser market
5) If word is anything to go by, beginning with IE9, all browsers should finally behave the same
6) To get IE8 to act like IE7 (thus eliminating need for hacks), add the IE7 emulate tag right after your starting HEAD tag
7) I too would like to see IE banned for good but truth be told, as long as people are buying PCs, that will be a tall order

Good luck!

You would think that by now, we would have an office like "Office of the webmaster" or "CIO of the nation" whose job it would be to coordinate all such websites, with the aim being uniformity. If there is such an office, then the current person on seat might want to reconsider his job:

You haven't been updated regularly for at least 2 weeks now.

For instance, the headline story ("Sambo’s Hajj team escapes death in Saudi Arabia"wink has been there for at least a week and most of the articles on the site now are those that were published, some as way back as January. Why is this? Are you on prolonged id-el-fitr holidays? Or have you turned into a monthly, rather than a daily?

I am "up to here" with your site. I have been a daily visitor since december 2007. I visit your site first because of all the relevant and rich articles. Having said that, I am afraid that if by next monday, your site isn't refreshed, I will go on a strike. You might want to ask Punch online what I did with them some time 2 years ago - When they decided to do that stupid thing of making you pay to read a news article, I didn't visit them for a year. Sure, I might be a tiny drop in the ocean but word does get around and you never know who else might be thinking like me.

We live in the world of instant communication. There are tons of other competing online newspapers. Don't take your brand name for granted.

Sincerely, from a loyal patron,

Yawa

instinctng:
Granted you mentioned no names (scared? tongue), what I said about blogs/cms isn't a criticism. It is a personal choice and prerogative.

I see this akin to someone who who goes to an eatery, gets some food, adds a few condiments to "spice it up", then comes to me with the food, complete with that eatery's container and then asks me how I would rate the food that he just prepared. In all honesty, I couldn't do it. Now, if he cooks his own food and tells me to rate it, I will do it without hesitating.

Sure, there is nothing wrong with not coding from scratch per se, especially if you are dealing with a site that will be updated frequently. That's the whole point of using it right? I mean, I have customized a few cms sites myself.
WebmastersRe: @yawatide, Feyisara And Co. Abeg, Help Me To Review/criticize My Blog by yawatide(f): 7:36pm On Sep 04, 2011
Hmmm, why so many usernames with stars as the first character? I swear, if I study harder, I will notice a pattern grin

Anyways, OP, unfortunately, as stated earlier, I don't do blogs or cms. Nothing against you but since you didn't write the code from scratch, I figure there is no point reviewing work that isn't yours. Sure, you may have customized but even at that, the foundation still isn't yours.

If and when you do an actual website or app from scratch, I will be the first to comment.

Good luck!
WebmastersRe: Recaptcha Breacheable? by yawatide(f): 12:56pm On Sep 03, 2011
As I have stated on another thread, as long as humans created something, it is subject to flaws, because humans are flawed.

Any piece of code is as secure as the day it was made. There is no such thing as 100% secure website. It's just like the sinner who is lucky simply because he hasn't been caught - no one has set their sites on that particular site, that's all.

The aim of writing "secure" code isn't to eliminate security loopholes (that is impossible as a practicality) but to mitigate such holes.

guru01:
Because apps are created by human beings. As long as humans are flawed, so will web apps created by them.

Bear in mind, no web app is 100% secure. An app is only as secure as we make it at a given time, that is, until a flaw is uncovered. In other words, at best, you can only mitigate security threats/risks, as opposed to eliminating them.

To Whom It May Concern:

The LUTH home page looks more like a domain's parked page than a unique site befitting that institution. In fact, I was so convinced it was a parked page that it only took me clicking some of the links to finally convince me that it was actually a website.

Abi, the person viewed source of a parked page and substituted their stuff with his/hers? huh

No offense anyone. Strictly business. cool
WebmastersRe: Help, I Cant Login To Joomla Admin Page by yawatide(f): 3:38pm On Sep 01, 2011
If you didn't do anything online at all, how do you know you have login problems? huh

In any event, I assume you at least have it installed on a local server (like wamp. . .Please say "yes" grin). If so, same difference. Follow the same steps. Only that in place of "www", you will type "localhost" or "127.0.0.1"
WebmastersRe: Help, I Cant Login To Joomla Admin Page by yawatide(f): 3:35pm On Aug 31, 2011
OP: afam4eva speaks well. hear ye him grin

Typically, when you install joomla, the admin interface is at www.yoursite.com/administrator. What afam is saying is, go to www.yoursite.com which is what the site looks like (the assumption here is that you installed the sample template, as opposed to the blank template. If you installed the sample template, you will see the login module. If you didn't, then you have a problem.
WebmastersRe: Help, I Cant Login To Joomla Admin Page by yawatide(f): 8:32am On Aug 31, 2011
Let's be honest here: Chances are that you are not using the correct details otherwise you wouldn't be getting this error cool

Sha, this has happened to me before:

If you have the login module on your actual site, click on "forgot password" and you should be prompted for your email address. Upon matching your records, the system should email you your username and password or email you a link to change your password and you go from there.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
WebmastersRe: Review My Site Pls by yawatide(f): 4:50pm On Aug 29, 2011
1) red navigation text on a blue background - not cool
2) Get rid of the counter at the bottom - that's so 1990s
3) get rid of the clock, top right
4) content is very sparse on the site and hard to read/follow, with respect to architecture
WebmastersRe: Images Optiization by yawatide(f): 11:50pm On Aug 28, 2011
I think the best policy is to use the best format for the job. for instance, photographs will come out with better quality as jpgs than gifs. Jpgs for photos will also weigh less than their gif equivalents.

robola:

I wasn't rude so, no apologies. 2 others have attested to that. What you did is equivalent to your car breaking down and knowing how it broke down, you take it to a mechanic without explanation and expect the mechanic to automatically figure out the correct problem and fix it.

Advice for the future:
When asking ppl to help solve a problem for you with respect to code, respect their time (which they are offering for free) by providing code snippets. Saying what you said in your original post isn't enough. Sure, I didn't have to respond but hey, I did. Deal with it.

Based on what dhtml said and the fact that you concurred tells me that you knew exactly what you did. This is an error by commission and it would have been nice if you stated up front that the scripts stopped working after you disabled javascript. Anyways, I guess the good thing is that you now know that jquery is javascript but javascript isn't jquery.

dhtml/pc_guru:
Thanks for defending a woman's honor. Chivalry isn't dead after all cool
WebmastersRe: Images Optiization by yawatide(f): 12:17pm On Aug 28, 2011
Don't forget the TITLE tag either - ALT tag only shows if the image doesn't exist or if you disable images. TITLE tag shows regardless and is also good for/used by screen readers
WebmastersRe: Jquery Help Needed by yawatide(f): 12:34pm On Aug 27, 2011
(Genera) Advice #1:

Don't assume ppl are witches or magicians who can automatically determine your problem and proffer a solution. Always post your non-working code and if possible, a screenshot so that ppl can help you accordingly.

WebmastersRe: Lack Of Jobs Or Lack Of Quality Graduates For The Jobs by yawatide(f): 7:33pm On Aug 25, 2011
How can you solve a problem when you are not willing to attack the symptom(s)? huh

The issue is that of corruption. Get rid of it and almost all our other problems go overnight. IMHO
WebmastersRe: Lack Of Jobs Or Lack Of Quality Graduates For The Jobs by yawatide(f): 3:56pm On Aug 25, 2011
@greenmouse Again, I could give a boat load of solutions but the one that comes to mind first, and without which nothing else can happen is this:
Stop (or at the very least cut by at least 80%) corruption and greed
WebmastersRe: Core Designer Or Core Developer by yawatide(f): 3:53pm On Aug 25, 2011
@guru01 LOL! If you refuse then as Darwin's survival theory states, you will simply die and give way to thie strongest of your species cool
WebmastersRe: Core Designer Or Core Developer by yawatide(f): 9:23pm On Aug 24, 2011
Learning is an ongoing process. Anyone who gives you a specific amount of time is deceiving you. Having said that, you could learn the core/basics (in other words, enough to make you dangerous) within a given amount of time. If I were to be the one training you, I would say at least 2 weeks each for html, css and javascript. After that, like the wild animals, I would force you to go fend for yourself grin

WebmastersRe: Please Help(dead Serious) by yawatide(f): 7:04pm On Aug 21, 2011
OP: Here's the scoop:

If you are at such a place in your life, stop being selfish (and I mean this respectfully) and outsource the jobs to others.  Don't look at it as a cost, but as a benefit as you will then free up your time to do what it is you actually want to do.

For example:
If you make $1000 per job on average, you can afford to outsource the jobs at say $200.  You might look at it as making only $800 but I look at it differently.  I look at it as, "the time I would have used to do 1 job is now time I can use to get 3 other jobs, not do a thing on those jobs, yet get paid for doing nothing"

This is how to do business.  Enough of the OYO levels. It is what i killing us in naija, generally speaking.

Make sense?
