Session does not last as long as cookies.
I respectfully will beg to differ. You can make a session last as long as you want - from a few seconds to forever.

So which is it? Beware of foreign hosts altogether (something you can't say cos IMHO you haven't tried them all) or beware of cheap foreign hosts (again, something you can't say cos again, IMHO, you haven't tried them all)?

I don't think the poster even knows where to start which is why he is posting his code. What I would do is "comb" through the code as best you can and check for possible typos, and other errors that might help weed out possibilities.

As I mentioned earlier, one way might be to add an "|| (fileType == ".mp3"wink" to function getPhoto. Unfortunately, the poster hasn't gotten back to us on this which leads me to believe he actually didn't need the help and we are wasting our time (which is why I haven't bothered to post further) undecided undecided huh undecided undecided
WebmastersRe: Pop Up Window Script That Is Multi Browser Supported? by yawatide(f): 1:04pm On Sep 20, 2009
How about a much simpler approach wink

Afam, I assume you are referring to http://www.onspeedwestafrica.waresmasons.com/:

Let us look at your code for "find out more" for instance:
<a target="_blank" onmouseout="rollout();" onmouseover="rollover('find_out_more');" onfocus="this.blur();" href="javascript:popUpWindowSite('http://www.onspeed.com/en/find_out_more.php', 0, 0, 800, 600);">FIND OUT MORE, </a>
I viewed your javascript to find the functions, "rollover" and "rollout" but couldn't.  Do they actually exist but I can't find them?  I also don't see the use of "this.blur()" but I will let that one be as there might be a reason for you implementing this.  I then looked at your "popupwindowsite()" and that looks good.

Here is the solution I came up with that pulled up the "find out more" page (you might want to remove the comma after "more" while you are at it):
Exhibit A
<a href="javascript:popUpWindowSite('http://www.onspeed.com/en/find_out_more.php', 0, 0, 800, 600);">FIND OUT MORE, </a>
You could also do it this way, ala a list apart, depending on what you want (this is for when you want the pop up contents to show regardless of whether or not javascript disabled):
Exhibit B
<a href="http://www.onspeed.com/en/find_out_more.php" onclick="popUpWindowSite('http://www.onspeed.com/en/find_out_more.php', 0, 0, 800, 600); return false;">FIND OUT MORE, </a>
Try "Exhibit A" across all browsers you want your site to support and get back to the house with results.  I will still say though that you look at using the (for example) thickbox effect cos, as dhtml mentioned above, popup blockers abound.

Thanks.

WebmastersRe: Pop Up Window Script That Is Multi Browser Supported? by yawatide(f): 12:08pm On Sep 20, 2009
Yes ,I think tis best to c how u implemented it.

I haven't had any issues with implementing popups across browsers except with respect to heights and widths of the popup itself.

Recently though, I have come to believe that using popups ends up giving the user too many windows too manage and so I have been using jquery's thickbox. This keeps them on the same page while at the same time creates a cool "effect".

I am familiar with the way a list apart does it and have used it often (where you have an onclick on a link and use an HREF, the latter which comes in very handy if a user disables javascript).

Let's start with seeing your code then we go from there.

Afam, I remember that "world war" very well tongue

As you've said, hopefully clients are finally getting it and are getting knowledgeable themselves. As I have predicted some time ago for the Nigerian web dev environment, at some point clients will start saying, "okay now I have a website. I don't really like it and I want someone who can make it better".

This is where I strongly hope that your website, www.nigeriawebsiteblunders.com, will have a major impact.

lojik:

This thread was started as a sarcastic one and I was about to blast you for not realizing it.  I guess I should have put "best" in quotes for emphasis.  However, having seen the LASG website, I go calm down.

The last time I visited it, last year I think, it was horrible and took forever to load.  I thought that is what I was about to see again but I was mistaken.  It is indeed the best that I have seen to date.  There are a few errors here and there (for instance, the video on the home page says, "Error"wink but the color combo and sheer simplicity and interactivity made me overlook it the first time around.

If you know who did the site, tell them say I troway salute. Hopefully, other SGs will see this and use it as a benchmark to improve their own respective sites  grin

I would tread carefully here.  You might be opening another pandora's box here.  Maybe there is a reason why they aren't IMing you, a reason you probably don't want made public.

WebmastersRe: Quick Review For A Website by yawatide(f): 7:40pm On Sep 18, 2009
1) Again with the assumptions. I don't control what is flagged neither do I have ability to "un spam" posts

5) Next time, put up a screenshot. Posting a link = you stepping knee deep into "it". You gave yourself the rope you used in hanging yourself by posting the link, IMHO.
WebmastersRe: Quick Review For A Website by yawatide(f): 6:55pm On Sep 18, 2009
1) Again with the assumptions. Please explain how. At least this sounds better than, "why are you replying me after banning me."

2) okay o

3) huh?  tongue

4) have you notified the "programmer" about the contact page?  even if the site is coming down, I think the person should be aware so that a similar mistake doesn't take place on future projects.  It could cost some major dough
WebmastersRe: Quick Review For A Website by yawatide(f): 6:34pm On Sep 18, 2009
1) I can't ban people.  That's Seun's domain.  Next time, ask as opposed to drawing conclusions

2) He he.  You are very slick.  You didn't expect people to click the link or comment on it?  This is definitely the thread of the year

3) I don't flag posts for spam/have the authority to "un-remove" them from the spam list. I can read them but I can't do anything about it other than let Seun know. By the way, 2 of Afam's posts have been flagged too. So again, don't draw conclusions.

4) double standards? Please explain.
WebmastersRe: Quick Review For A Website by yawatide(f): 6:14pm On Sep 18, 2009
I dont know how to explain that again, i am not a programmer.

We were talking about specific stuff, i didnt put up the site for a 'review' or for comparism
My question was quite simple:

Do you do the XHTML, CSS and Javascript or the strictly back end (PHP/JSP, SQL, etc)?

You didn't explicitly ask for a review but you did so implicitly by posting the URL. Come on, don't tell me that you didn't expect anyone to click the link. In other words, you gave yourself the rope to hang yourself.

Again, no worries, the site as you said is coming down.
WebmastersRe: Quick Review For A Website by yawatide(f): 5:36pm On Sep 18, 2009
Gamine, noted.  Out of curiousity, when you say you didn't do any programming, what do you mean?

Regardless, It doesn't matter though, IMHO, as when you show someone a site, they don't go asking, "was this site designed and developed by 2 different people?"  All they see is that the site is jacked up and as far as visuals go, the designer owns it.

My point still remains though that the site wasn't ready for prime time, graphics or coding aside.  There are other issues with the site but I just wanted to bring up the most obvious one.  I guess you should have come up with a more complete/better-working site as a basis of comparison with respect to the goings-on on this thread.

As you said the site will be coming down soon so let's leave it at that.

Note to everyone:
Borrow a leaf from my signature and don't resort to calling people names.  Issues never get solved this way.
Gamine:
When you brag and make sly remarks and attempts to ridicule someone, you cannot even hold your own.

Here is a site review for the URL you posted:

1. All projects links - page opened with all the links dummy links

2. The build up the school wall - page opened with the title "build up the hospital wall" with the
top drop down menu not working

3. Feedback link - page opened and I just clicked submit and got the following:

Notice: Query failed: INSERT command denied to user 'escroll_escroll'@'localhost' for table 'feedback_tbl' SQL: INSERT INTO `escroll`.`feedback_tbl` (`serialnumber`, `message`, `feedbacktype`, `name`, `postdate`) VALUES (null, '', '', '', CURDATE()); in /home/escroll/public_html/include/classes/DB_LIB.php on line 105

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/escroll/public_html/include/classes/DB_LIB.php:105) in /home/escroll/public_html/postfeedback.php on line 11

4. Clicked on a link (http://www.escrollfoundation.org/index.php?action=viewres&id=19) under related articles and got a web page with 2 complete copies of the same site one on top of the other.

Conclusion:
1. You have chided and thrown words on this thread as if you were very good with design

2. Even the design on the website have some basic issues like hover color of links being almost the same color as the background

3. The programming part is having some issues for example the only task I clicked on to see validation and/or insert operation with the error reproduced above

So, when people ask for reviews, provide them, correct them as no one is perfect and in correcting them do not insult them or attempt to ridicule them because in reality those you choose to ridicule may just know far more than you know even in the area you think you are an expert in.
The SQL error on the contact page (after you hit submit, without filling out any fields) is pretty serious. Hopefully, the site hasn't made it to production yet.

It might be something the programmer should know.

WebmastersRe: Please Review by yawatide(f): 3:01pm On Sep 18, 2009
1) You don't have to do this: http://www.gafstudios.net/images/services_r7_c5.jpg
what you should have done: just make the image a background, give the DIV a black color background, then use a (readable) yellow font for the header text.

2) Header image is too large such that, that is all I see (I surf with 1024x768 resolution, which is what a majority of web surfers browse with). As a result, I can't locate your left nav unless I scroll -bad

3) Why is the header split up into different slices? Trying to save some bytes? That right there tells me you know the image is too large. Consider reducing at least the height

4) Why are you using an image map? bad

5) Broken links on a few pages.

Of course there is more. My company offers website audits as part of its services. Feel free to contact me in the event that you would like a more comprehensive audit and/or you would like for us to fix the issues found.

Good luck!

WebmastersRe: Get Premium Quality Joomla Templates, Absolutely Free! by yawatide(f): 10:41am On Sep 17, 2009
I think the question you'll be asked is where did u download that template they never wana know about the developer unless he/she is charging sumthin.
I don't think you can say this authoritatively. Sure, they might ask where you got the template but it is equally easy to use the "contact us" page of such a site to ask the owner who actually created the template wink

I am not saying this is definitely so, but it is definitely a possibility. You never know.
WebmastersRe: Get Premium Quality Joomla Templates, Absolutely Free! by yawatide(f): 6:38pm On Sep 16, 2009
inf8nity:

Not necessarily. Some developers feel the need to "give back", hence the free templates. Besides, they probably will still make money off the free templates in the long run say, when someoen asks, "where did you get that template?" or "who developed that template?"

The beauty of open source is that code is free. Of course, you could build yours to suit your needs and charge a premium for it (and being a capitalist, I have no problem with that) but one doesn't and shouldn't have to join a club to: 1) get a quality template or 2) so that the developers can make money too.

not everyone has money like you man tongue

I take it you use includes so the portion below should occur on every page. The portion below is reference twice on the page: once at the top and the other at the middle. Again, you can search for "base.js"
