WebmastersRe: Php Class For Beginners. Question Will Be Treated With High Priority. by yawatide(f): 2:56pm On Oct 05, 2009
I don't do blogs but if it is anything like joomla then perhaps the problem is that you can't post raw html code directly on the page. You will need to add it to a module (that is what joomla calls it and/or download some kind of plugin that will enable you to add html code directly on a page.

Any other suggestions?
ProgrammingRe: Regreting Programming Career by yawatide(f): 10:00am On Oct 05, 2009
I think a book I am currently reading has said it best, "programming is difficult business. It shouldn't be undertaken with ignorance".

of course I am sure the author isn't saying that programming in and of itself is difficult but that being mature enough to know the good parts and use only those is what is difficult.

Programming/coding (I don't agree with your analysis pc guru wink) or whatever you want to call it should be done cos you have the passion for it not cos of the money. The money will always come later.

What's that saying? Ah, here it is: If you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life.

try www.w3schools.com first then come back here (or preferably the webmasters section - after all javascript is the language of the web browser) with specific questions.

good luck!
ProgrammingRe: Which Programming Language Holds Brighter Prospects In Nigeria by yawatide(f): 9:55am On Oct 05, 2009
I think the keyword here is "today's nigeria".  When I see that:

1) I am thinking what can be easily learned at the lowest cost
2) I am thinking what most of the applications in Nigeria are written with
3) I am thinking what probably has the lowest learning curve, at least to get one's feet wet
4) I am thinking infrastructure that would enable someone to learn any language the quickest (coding environment, hosting (if for the web) and its associated costs, books, etc)

In other words, I am not thinking what language is best overall.  None is, when it boils down to it.  Each has its strengths and weaknesses and besides, has been hashed out over and over on here that it is boring.

Again, let's think "in today's Nigeria".
WebmastersRe: Globacom Nigeria Is Recruiting Web Designers by yawatide(f): 9:50am On Oct 05, 2009
1) I think moving the site in-house is bad as I don't see them justifying continuous work on the site to keep the developers around full time.

2) danteeweb: you would think that whoever is in charge of their website would have the knowledge and wherewithal to know that what they have is crap and not to accept any changes made prior to what worked. Why did they let the SA company go in the first place? If it was cost, sometimes it is worth dropping a few extra notes for the peace of mind that your site is worth it

3) wow! what a crappy-looking site. It doesn't reflect the money they are making at alllll!
WebmastersRe: Be Careful In Posting Your Sites Here by yawatide(f): 9:46am On Oct 05, 2009
I guess people think differently but if I were a client and found my site being reviewed here, I would be glad that people took the time to review it, free of charge.  On the other side of the coin, as a developer, posting my sites (I used to do it in the past though my stopping has nothing to do with clients seeing the comments but more because it turned into a competition by others rather than an actual review) would actually make me think twice about what I am about to post knowing that people are ready to rip it apart if I do something wrong.

Consequently, I would make sure I take care of certain things based on prior reviews before posting (making sure contact forms work, etc).  Maybe the fear here is more on the "webmaster" than on the client in that he/she doesn't want the client to know that the work they did is crap (as most clients aren't that informed)?  I have used this example before but I redesigned a site for a friend early this year.  This is a site that I found via google 2 years ago and sent the person email.  I never got a response and was crushed as a result.  As a result of me redesigning the site, I found out that the "webmaster" listed an email on the site that was never actually created.  The site also had so many tables that it wouldn't open under "STP" even in the US.  Now suppose this site was posted here for review and my friend happened to stumble upon it.  It would have been bad news for the "webmaster".

Unless you are under contract not to "expose" a site, I see nothing wrong with doing such.  Anyone who reads reviews should be able to weed out the wheat from the chaff.  Or is it just me?

Probably PHP - It is ubiquitious and doesn't cost you a dime and pretty much every host out there supports it (and mySQL)

all in all, these are excellent comments. In fact, ever since I started posting "non site review" posts, this is probably the best in terms of number of posts, quality of posts, the fact that there is no wrestlemania going on, etc. Please keep it up.

As I stated on the thread from cactus who would like to meet with his nigerian peers on october 10, I think the quality will get even better when we get to see each other face to face and get a personal feel for each other. Sometimes, though the answer (as in this case) is crystal clear, it is still good to hear from the other side, provided their arguments (again, as in this case) are sound and devoid of insults, egos, etc.

Again, please keep it up!
WebmastersRe: Help With Google Adsense Configuration by yawatide(f): 12:52pm On Oct 03, 2009
andre3000: gbam!

I know for a fact, from asking around that ads on my sites that show in the US aren't the same ads that show in Nigeria. Besides, how much sense would it make to advertise a company whose product you may never buy, cos of location? Even the company would most likely sue google as they have to pay for the impressions.
WebmastersRe: Globacom Nigeria Is Recruiting Web Designers by yawatide(f): 12:47pm On Oct 03, 2009
danteweb:
I have to agree with what you said about recruiting agencies and them just printing whatever comes to mind. I say this based on experience:

Back in 2000 or so, I remember seeing a job opening. They required 10 years of experience in ASP. The problem? ASP at the time was barely 2 years old! shocked shocked huh shocked shocked

Yep, many put up all that stuff just to separate the wheat from the chaff. I personally don't see how one website can handle all that technology (if they have other clients who use various technologies, then they have an argument). Having said that, they probably need to scrutinize their recruiting agency and/or their personnel department.

ProgrammingRe: Complete Javascript Programming Tutorial by yawatide(f): 7:26pm On Oct 02, 2009
dreamchild, here is an example:

suppose you have this css in your code:
div#dreamChild {
    display: none;
}
Now, suppose in your page, you have a button which once clicked, you want the dreamChild DIV to become visible, like so:
<button id="someButton" onClick="showDreamChild();" />
Your javascript would manipulate the CSS (via the D(ocument) O(bject) M(odel)) like so:
function showDreamChild() {
    document.getElementById("dreamChild"wink.style.display = "block";
}
Make sense? I hope this helps.  Bottomline, you need to learn about the DOM and how to manipulate it. www.w3schools.com and other sites you can find via google can help in this regard.

Good luck!

To all those who say you need a degree:
As I see it, the purpose of a degree is to demonstrate that you have the ability to learn so yes, just as I know people with engineering degrees working at a bank and in fact know someone with a history degree who is a programmer, one doesn't need a degree to know how to code
WebmastersRe: How Much Can You Make In A Month With Google Ads On Your Blog. by yawatide(f): 6:12pm On Oct 02, 2009
thatz right kingzli and consequently, many follow blindly and get frustrated when they don't make at least $300 a month.

As I said earlier, it's all about purpose, the reason for being. I went in knowing that it won't be a cake walk. As a matter of fact, I got my first google check after 3 years. After I did some fine-tuning, I now get a check every 10 months or so.

For me as I said before, since it is residual income, I only bother checking my adsense account once every 3 weeks or so, twice if I am bored tongue

nolongting:
I missed the part of your post about coding standards. This is and should be within the domain of responsibility of the coders, not the project manager. It is the coder's manager that is and should be in charge of this. A PM, in an ideal company (not one where one is made to do everything including the kitchen sink) should only coordinate the different pieces of a project from an oversight level and not micromanage.

Just curious.

In a country where unemployment is very high, sadly so. They can basically cherry pick to their delight cos they know that if Mr A won't take it, Mr B down to Mr Z, including alpha, beta and gamma are all waiting in line for the same job.

My point: make google (assuming you are using php and your host supports it, you could search for "php rss reader for website"wink your friend - you won't regret it wink

1) What do you mean, exactly, by "buttons not showing up well?" It is possible to explain what "well" is so that we know the opposite? I guess my point here is that we aren't mind readers. Looking at the page, where the buttons are (assuming my idea of buttons equals yours) look fine to me.

2)
just finished the designing work with MS Frontpage
a) Does your host support front page extensions? If not, that is your problem right there.
b) Why use a 3rd party FTP program? I haven't used frontpage since 2000 or so but last I used it, it had its own in-built file transfer program. All you do is click the necessary button, specify ftp address, username and password, and frontpage does the rest for you.

good luck!

WebmastersRe: Help With Joomla Script. by yawatide(f): 3:38pm On Oct 02, 2009
Coming to think of it, one quick way to fish out errors is to pepper the code with alert statements like, "i am here (u specify the location)". This has helped my butt a lot, even in recent times.

WebmastersRe: My Blog About Progress In Nigeria by yawatide(f): 3:36pm On Oct 02, 2009
Cactus, your topic "NO MORE WEBSITES PLEASE":

I think better questions to ask, at the very least, are:

1) How many of the workers even know they have a website?

2) How many of them actually visit the website? Out of this number, how many visit more than a few pages?

3) Who do the complaints go to or is it possible that the email address was created (if at all) and it is just sitting in limbo?

4) How many of them actually care that the website is not working?

5) Do they have a department/outsource company dedicated to fishing out such problems or is it a case of "website coded in 2005 (or whatever year), it is out the door and everything works fine till we are ready for another redesign"?

I personally do not know of any deployment or testing that goes 100% smoothly, not to talk of a page that is coded the first time around being without at least 1 error. If you are aware, please let me know. I don't mind putting in a word or two for such a person and if necessary, have my employers sponsor the person's work visa tongue

On a more serious note though, all it was was an extra "d". The site still functions as designed. Is a typo bad? sure but it isn't the end of the world, compared to say, a blank page showing up.
