AgricultureRe: Snail Farm Begins - The Birth Of A Farm by yazz09(op): 7:30am On Jul 04, 2015
Upon working on my farm this morning I noticed two of my snails making love. Below is the picture of the event, so romantic isn't it.

Anyway the other picture shows one of my snail burrowed the soil and cooling of after a hard night work.

I was able to get the feed yesterday, but I've not mixed them together. Will do that today and show you guys how it looked like.

Before I forget, you can also feed them with chicken feed. I did that two nights ago, and they licked the whole thing.

I shall be going into snail farming in less than two months time. I am just abt to acquire 3plots of land. snail farming and probably with plantain

pls highly experienced snail farmers shud signify. thanks
There combination is a perfect marriage. The plantain will serve as shade for the snail. But don't plant them near the fence or else your snails will escape from it.
Or you can build separate open pens all across the land.

Send any questions or comments here so we'll all learn and grow together.

Can your snails drill into the soil? If they can't, then that is a very wrong soil. It doesn't drain water easily
Yes, they've been drilling into the soil. I'll upload some of the pics of those that are underground later when I come back from work.

It looks like sandy soil. Is it easily penetrable? And seems like it has too much water
No it's not sandy, and it's not water logged. There is a hole under that drains excess water. The sand is wet all day.

I must get the feeds today, no matter how busy I am. I'll make time nd get it. Will upload more pictures in the evening.

Tip: protect your snails from heat and wind. Both factors dehydrate them, which will make them hibernate
AgricultureRe: Snail Farm Begins - The Birth Of A Farm by yazz09(op): 11:15pm On Jul 01, 2015

Today, as promised, I was able to get my boys. Could not yet get the , hence I gave them tomatoes and ugu. I just pray I'll have enough time to get the feed tomorrow.

Its good not to meddle your business with your personal life. If you must chop, pay yoursef for the ones you'll eat.

Else they'll be so delicious you will eat them all under one month.

As for these no free one.

Guys, I'll be going to get the feeds soon, will update as soon as I get them.

Their feeds are easy to get, left over fruits would do like pawpaw and its likes. Avoid fruits with a hard back and if you know people who make fruit juice at home, you can collect the chaff and also waterleaf stalk would do.
They eat that too if you are keeping them as pets. But for business don't even think of relying on such feeds. Give them a formulated feed that can boost there growth in 6 or 7 months.

Nice thread bro, I have a few questions to ask. I'm a novice to snail farming but I intend to give it a try in a short time.
Pls how do you source their feeds? Like how many broods will you use for this size of pen? And how often do the snails require attention in a day?
I'll be glad if you can also update us with the financial implications of rearing snails of this size of pen.
Thanks.
Its a good business to get into, but still requires all the business brain that you can muster.

Ok for the feed, I use a feed formula to prepare the feed ( you can't find any kind of already made feed in the market).

I am looking at stocking it with a 100 snails or more.

Snails don't require much attention from you, just an hour early in the morning and late in the evening. To put the feed and water, then remove the previous feed and maybe dead snails. So basically 2 hours attention per day.

Snails doesn't require a high financial commitment, with as little as 50k you can start a small farm in your backyard. if you want to start medium scale, budget like 300 - 500k (if you have a piece of land then like 200k).

Snail farming is a good venture to go into, but do your research very well before delving in. Don't go in without a been convinced that you've gotten as much knowledge as possible before going in.

All the best.

Hello, snail farming is the easiest form of animal farming that I've seen and very profitable. Though like every other venture it needs some tactical approach if you want to go into it big time. I just started mine own farm, as for information I can't give u everything you need at once here. Either ask a specific question or search for topics on snail farming here in NL, you'll be surprised at the vast of information you'll get.

I think that snails do well in a much darker environment, from the pic you uploaded, you are making use of a see through net, are you gonna make a darker covering for it or you'll leave it bare?
True, but after introducing them to the pen, i'll use dried plantain leaf to cover them. It won't only protect them from sun, but also rain falling directly on them.

Thanks for mentioning me bro.

Op, I love this concept but since it is a wooden pen, there should be shelter to prevent rain from soaking and spoiling the wood
Though my plan is to rent an land later, I know this won't last more than two breeding seasons. By then I will build block pen.

I have posted my appeal on various threads on snail farming but haven't received any response. I need the Achatina achatina species that lay up to 100 eggs in one batch. I have been farming the local species I got from the bush market, but they usually lay only about 10 eggs at most in a batch. Anybody that can help me get this Achatina achatina species should please contact me with thymm50@gmail.com or 07030297412
If you re still interested in the Achatina achatina, pm me and we'll talk
AgricultureRe: Pictures: My Snail Farm by yazz09(m): 8:48am On Jun 24, 2015
I am a snail farmer, and for the question that most of you are asking. It's possible to harvest really big snails in less than 8months.
Let me paint a scenario for you, how long does it take a fish to mature in the wild? About two years or so, now people that have fish farm harvest same fish in 3 or 4 months. The only difference is that they give the fish formulated feed. Same for chicken, and also same for snails.

The only difference is that snail feed cannot be bought in the regular animal feed shop.

If anyone is interested I'll send the feed to you at a price per kg. I'll not give out the formula here, so don't bother to ask. I can ship it to were ever you are in Nigeria.

Show your interest and I'll drop my bbm pin

Sometimes i read replies on Nairaland and I just realize that Nigerian youths are full of crap.

You all voted Buhari because he used fighting corruption as campaign strategy. Now a governor is trying to fight corruption and everybody is blasting "instead of working he is probing".

The Amaechi we are talking about, are you guys trying to tell me he is not corrupt? I agree Wike is corrupt too and you don't need to remind him that he was once a commissioner that can be probed too. But lets let him be, after all its part of government work to bring to book all those that embezzle government funds.

If Amaechi is clean let him prove it, if not let him pay for his crimes.
