Hello everyone, nice that this actually exist.

I would like to ask the HOUR pract.with lots of experience if we could get where to intern.

So what are you saying in essence?

I do have some years experience in admin, and little in HR and a student member of CIPMN. Not working right now,but still searching.

It would be good if HR managers can help with internship for a period of time.

The relationship being symbiotic;both parties gaining from the other.

The also helps the department in achieving organisational roles on the long run.

Thank you.

CareerGlobal Meltdown: I Have Just Been Sacked by yemmight(op): 9:31am On Mar 19, 2009
Few weeks ago we thought they were bluffing. The rumour spread all over and everybody was panicking.

Eventually it came to reality this morning. About 50 staff were asked to go in my company and those that are left will also have to loose 30% of their salaries henceforth. They told us if the action was not taken the company may global. We were given option of resigning.

I pray that no one in the house should loose his/her job but we all must prepare this period and be strong.

All the best.

The recent global meltdown has affected in no little way Nigeria’s Economy. So many companies have folded up and some are cutting salaries and laying staff off.

For those that were asked to go what do you think one can do to survive pending when a new job be found? Honestly, I have lots of friends in this situation and there are more than 1000 questions on what they should be doing now to survive.

mos def:
@yemmight Very interesting forum you started, it has in a way changed my perception of HR practioners (to an extent). My last place of employment which was a large well known organization in Nigeria really changed my views of HR personnels. Before it might look as if i am being biased, most of my colleagues (back then) shared the same view with me. I was trained in customer service and was taught of the importance of being customer-centric to not only external customers but the organization's internal customers who happen to be the organization's employees. But this was not the case as most staff inquiries or requests were treated with utmost disregard as if a favor was being done for the person making the request). Most employees dreaded going to the HR dept becos of the cold attitude of the personnel there (not all of them were like that). What am trying to say in essence, is that HR practioners should understand their role within an organization, it goes beyond selection and recruitment, training and setting budgets but includes being able to assist the employees of the organization which is in a way motivating.

That brings me to my second point, what steps are most HR personnel doing towards knowledge management? I just finished a post graduate masters in strategic management and this course has made me understand that as the environment becomes more competitive, organizations should start leveraging on their intangible assets which is a source of competitive advantage. So far in the tread, only adessolar brought up a subject related to it (the creation of value). Some organizations practice it (such as granting employees study leave and grants, some send employees on trainings) while others pay no attention to it. I believe HR practioners should do more in the area of creating value through knowledge management/leveraging on an organization's intangible resources as this goes a long way in the retention of employees (this is and has been a major reason for high levels of employee churn rate).
The modern HR we are building now will not allow non-challant or lackadaisical attitudes of old personnel unit as they were called. Such attitudes are increasingly diminishing in most industries now. You know why? Good people are very mobile. They go away at their own expediency. If you are a good HR you will do everything to retain your good hands.

An HR is seen as support unit. People are really looking for their issues to be resolved. Because they see us problem solvers, even those issues that don’t concerns us they still bring but a good HR person should on no account turn them down because they will feel rejected by an organization that brought them in. In today HR, all HR staff should undergo training in customer service.

Secondly, retention strategy must not only be in place but be implemented. Talk about mobility of workers. This cost, in both financial and non-financial terms, is high. Staff turnover is expensive and finding replacement skills can be a difficult task. What your competitors are doing these days is to head-hunt your best asset. But let me tell this, not all employees leave an organization for remuneration alone. Some enjoy their job that they don’t even think of leaving, such staff must have enjoyed trainings, compensations etc. Such companies must have retention strategy, succession planning. My company does study leave most of which are abroad. They are also ready to pay for any related certification on your behalf.

The focus must be to engage people for as long as possible, rather than trying to retain them for as long as possible. An innovative retention strategy and an accompanying reward strategy will certainly aid such process.
