Thanks Yeryer for dropping another useful website. Kindly explain how to use info on the website for buy opportunity.

Oh I just came across that site. But basically you seek out heavily shorted stocks on an uptrend. The idea is those who shorted the stock may be forced to buy them back at a higher price which further propels the stock. I believe finviz.com also have a filter for heavily shorted stocks.

I have to throw my hat for the men here.....you guys are the real deal @ @oakpearl, Yeryer and many others...unfortunately many youth come on this forum just to abuse and gossip.....why some are making real cash ....

The word stock alone scares me....but this thread build my confident....been following quietly for some time now, although with my other moniker....

I usually invest in real estate, mutual funds and ETF...

After following this thread for nearly a month, I decided to do some trial and error.. learning from my mistakes with my hard cash...

But so far , in 3 weeks, I have turned $15k into $21k.....some days are red but the land is mostly green.

I think this thread will be my new tv ahahah.....it feels so good to watch ur money grow like grass....

I use Yahoo finance, fool.com and investors place for guidance and information......I dont know much but I always read their conversations instead of boring myself with too much.

Thank u guys

Damn, look at that. Over 40% in just how long? That's no small feat and living proof you don't have to be an MBA degree holder to grow your money. I give you all the credit boss, you took a big leap and its paying off, congrats.
Honestly I love when people post their gains no matter how big or small, it will encourage many folks that have been on the sidelines. As Nigerians we can be suspicious at times but once we see more people reporting positive feedback, it encourages us to take a chance. Before I started, I used to have my bank invest low risk mutual funds and bonds, every year I will male like 4% and the bank will still keep 1%. But then a co worker of mine advised me to invest my money myself and it was around the same time I stumbled upon another nairaland thread about US stocks. It's really not rocket science, everyone can grow their money in stocks.
Congrats once more!!

Please I need your ideas on a cruise stock RCL, what is the safe entry point for it? @Oakpearl @Yeryer and other gurus in the house. Thank you

The cruise lines are also rallying hard as well. There's hardly any resistance to slow this rally as sellers have exhausted themselves and taking a break at the moment. Plus RCL is no where near its january high if $135 so I think it has more legs to run. But just be careful because even In a bull market there will be dips.

Spectacular Jobs report has the market on steroids. All of a sudden now analysts and hedge fund managers who were preaching doom and gloom not so long ago are being forced to upgrade and buy stocks now. Someone said the best time to buy is when there's blood in the streets and everyone else is selling.

We are witnessing some serious short squeeze in the airline stock mixed with FOMO. American Airlines (AAL), had 35% of its shares shorted just last month. As the stock price rises, those short sellers have no choice but to buy in to limit their loss. Who can blame them, when Buffet turns bearish the world listens, but a little old rookie like me kept saying buy the airlines, it is literally free money. smiley Seriously, even call options I bought yesterday has more than doubled.
I want to create a watch list of the beaten down stocks like airlines, hotels, retailers, movie theaters, parks, mall operators etc that were really affected by the lockdown and have a very high short interest. Here's a site to see heavily shorted stocks https://www.highshortinterest.com/. I plan to check this list everyday to see quick buying opportunities as more cities open. If anyone has suggestions they can add please do.

I believe the TOS platform is only available to their members. Those strategies you listed only apply to options and not stocks exactly. But options are based on stocks. Like you can't just buy stocks and expect to make the same percentage gain. Matter of fact some of those strategies makes you money when the stock price falls but just holding the stocks will make you lose money.

Bought about $10,000 worth of shares combined of Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines & American Airlines.

I’m already up almost $2,500.00.

I’m planning to hold till next year.

I still believe that once the lockdown is eased, the Airlines shares will fly.

Get in if you can now.

Baddest. This is the way. This kind investing na him dey sweet pass. When you have a strong conviction a stock will go your way and you double down.

@yeryer how do you see Sprint Airlines (SAVE).

Wow the stock is up almost 10% today. The airlines are rallying hard off their lows. I don't think we are completely out of the woods even as more cities reopen. Things can turn south fast, so if you are a short term investor, please have a close stop limit price to take you out. If you are long term, you can add to the dips.

How true is this?

For all the years I've known and watched CNBC, Jim Cramer has recommended Comcast (CMCSA). Granted, they are the parent company for CNBC and they provide both TV and internet service to their customers but I've never had a good feeling about investing in traditional media companies since the advent of Netflix and other streaming media. But comcast looks really enticing here. In fact if it drops to $39 I will buy a few shares. I think they also offer a steaming service.

Fools suggest Starbucks (SBUX). I had a quick look at their financials (just a little over 3 years revenue of debt) - Not bad, could be better.,
Roger (ROG) : Debt just a little above 2 and half years of debt) - Better
Hasbro (HAS) - I personally won't touch this one for a long term play - almost 8 years revenue worth of debt.

I have just listed them here, I know you will do your due diligence. Likewise everyone else that reads this post (Not recommendations)

Starbucks (SBUX) is a good company with a decent dividend yield. I will put an alert around $76.2 if it triggers I might get into it.

Roger (ROG) looks interesting. It's a $2 Billion company and I've never heard of it. It looks like it's got potential. I've added it to my watch list while I seek out a good entry point. I got into another small cap industrial company Triumph Group (TGI) last week, stock is up 44% since then. I want to seek out explosive small cap stocks with potential.

@YerYer, how's your options trading? Did you manage to check out the books? Just checking in. I'm always checking the posts without commenting seeing that most times the answers have been provided or I can't add value to the conversation. I do more of options in this season.

My trading account looks like this today, note the 94% loss on one of it, currently 85%. Thank God it was for a lower amount but %s are %s.

Well done to everyone for sharing.

Mehn I haven't checked out the books o. I work long hours and hardly have any time. But I will get to it very soon.
Lol I've reduced my option tradings for now but when I dabble into it, I only open small positions. My current win:loss ratio is very low because of the high IV and unpredictability of the market.
I buy undervalued stocks now; for example I got into Macys (M) this morning at $6.7, planning to exit at $10 or $5.50, whichever comes first.

Let me share my experience last week with a particular stock.

I bought Enphase energy at 39 dollars, because it's all time high was 59 dollars , I hoped to make about 50% gain. Corona was the reason the stock fell. I just bought the dip. I bought the stock in April.

The stock was going up and down as Normal, last week Monday, there was a surge and my total return was at 60% (exceed my target). The big question was should I hold for little more or sell and move on?

The company was good, good balance and all. My initial feeling was to hold

I follow some traders on twitter to learn few things from them, one particular tweet hit me " Don't fall in love with a particular stock" another one replied "that traders who fall in love with a particular stock lose money"

Point is if youve achieved your target, good to sell and move on. Don't get attached, it's just business

I decided to sell at 60% profit.

After selling, the stock still went up (if I held on, I will be at 72% gain)

Typicall Nigerian, I was bitting my finger BUT

At the end of the week, the stock fell for three consecutive days, if I had held on, my gain would have reduced to 45%.

As others have highlighted, have an entry and exit strategy

Weldone bros. Taking profits never hurts no one. I don dey watch Enphase (ENPH) for some time now. Trying to get in at a good price.

I doubt Nigerians have access to their Thinkorswim platform as you would've to be a td Ameritrade user to have access. Most of these foreign brokers and fintech companies have really shunned Nigeria but they will live to regret it. Nigeria has one of the youngest and largest English speaking demographic in the world. As access to the internet keeps getting cheaper, there will be more Nigerians online, so it really surprises me sometimes to see how much disregard these companies have for us. If they have any foresight, they should be heavily investing in the vibrant and educated Nigerian youths. If they are worried about scammers or what not, they should put in place means to mitigate that risk. Afterall nobody hacks and scams like Americans; if you find out the billions paypal, credit card companies and others lose to scammers every year, it will make 419 look like child's play. I know there might be more to this, but we have been shunned and ignored for way too long it doesn't even make sense anymore.

STOCK FOCUS: AstraZeneca (AZN $55.28)

AstraZeneca is the new vaccine flavor of the week. The U.S. government has agreed to a $1.2 billion deal to secure the supply of a potential vaccine as early as October.

I reviewed and saw their finances is in order and unlike most of these pharmaceutical firms, they are profit making and dividend paying.
With all the price crash storm that hit the market peaking in March, it only fell to around $36, proving to be amongst the most defensive stocks in its sector.

Watch as it makes higher highs shortly.

Expect shares of Moderna, Inovio and other vaccine makers to encounter more volatility ahead.

Will follow this one closely, thanks

Square (SQ) the mobile payment processor reported wider loss than expected but revenue exceeded analyst consensus. They are poised to benefit from a contactless world as their Cash app is wildly used by teens and young adults. They should also benefit as more people get their stimulus check. I've been in and out of this name in the past and I plan to add if it dips more.

Closed out of Square (SQ) today for 11%. Too much bearish sentiment on the stock. Two analyst downgraded the stock this week. I'm still a believer, will buy back in the lower $70's.

Some of the stocks like Amazon (AMZN), Facebook (FB), Google (GOOGL), Apple (AAPL) and Tesla (TSLA) are very expensive so I can't afford them.

i.e. TDAmeritrade doesn't allow Fractional Stock Trade so to buy a share of Amazon (AMZN) I would need $2,459.41

Meanwhile I bought 100 shares of Southwest Airlines (LUV) for $2,700 yesterday.

Lol I know they are expensive. But truth be told, these are the same companies that will fare better in the near future. If an investor has $10,000 to invest, does it matter if he spends it all on Amazon (AMZN), Tesla (TSLA), Google (GOOGL), Netflix (NFLX) or Apple (AAPL) or is it better if he spends it all on 100 companies whose stock prices are below $100? I don't know if this makes sense, all I'm trying to say is you shouldn't base your investments solely on stock price. I can understand if you don't have much capital right now to buy any of these stocks, but I think having some kind of exposure to them is essential. I believe you can buy fractional shares from the Robinhood app.

LUV is a great stock by the way

I already bought shares in DAL, LUV, UAL, and AAL.

I have also been reading up extensively on options and I want to diversify into options.

I see you're very experienced in options.

I was going through your posts on options and noticed sometimes you initiate a bullish spread.

i.e. For the Cisco Trade you initiated both a call & put simultaneously.

Does a bullish spread require you to initiate a call & put simultaneously?

Sir, I believe that's one of my screenshot from years ago.
That option trade on Cisco (CSCO) is known as a long straddle. That's when you buy calls and puts of the same strike price with different expiration dates. This strategy works best in stocks with increased volatility. Regardless of which direction the stock price moves, that strategy makes you money. However this strategy will not work on less volatile stocks, you will lose money.

Happy to hear you are reading about options. TD Ameritrade also has the ThinkorSwim platform, it is the gold standard for option traders and it's completely free for members. If you haven't already, download the software on your computer and phone. You can analyse an option trade before entering, the analyser will show you how much you set to gain or lose based on the projected movement of the stock.

For experienced traders preferably in the U.S.:

How do you navigate the wide gulf between short-term vs long-term capital gain tax rates?
Do you have any strategies for tax-loss harvesting while circumventing the wash-sale rule?

YerYer et al.

When I started buying stocks I won't lie to you, I held on to many stocks for at least 1 year just so that I could be taxed at the lower long term rate. Back then though I had little deductions or exemptions I could claim. Holding stocks as a long term investor has it benefits though, It limits impulsive trades and I got quarterly dividends from some companies. But now, my core portfolio is long term but I when I see short to medium opportunity, I jump on it without worrying about the tax rates. My philosophy is, if i'm making money and the government take their share, I still make money.

I'm not too savvy with tax-loss harvesting, however I know you are allowed to deduct up to $3,000 of loss from your total annual income every year. My Nigerian tax man takes care of all that for me.
