Another "fire-proof" strategy that never fails with the adequate provision for patience as long as you play with funds you wouldn't need soon.

That is so true. Sometimes I will sell half a position and let the gains ride. Lol I think he's concerned because if how volatile tesla is and [s]it's only one share he has, so it's either hold all or sell all.[/s]

I just realized he has 1.5 shares which is nice because Trove allows fractional share purchase. If he's worried he can just sell half.

Please how can someone track option activity?
That is when substantial call and put option contracts are executed.
Thanks

I would like to know as well. I know there are subscription services that alert members such as Pete & Jon Najarian Market Rebellion newsletter, but they can be quite expensive. Barchart.com also lists unusual option activities but I don't know if it's listed live or at the end of each trading day. Only thing though, with barchart.com you have to make sure the trade isn't a hedge or a spread. For example if someone bought 4,000 Tesla $600 calls expiring April 17th, you want to look at the option chain to make sure that same person didn't sell say 5,000 Tesla $550 calls expiring on the same April 17th, that will be considered a bearish call spread. I don't know how much you know about options. But basically you want to make sure the ratio of calls to puts for example is greater than 4:1, the volume traded is greater than 4,000 and there should be a significant Open Interest (OI). It's not an exact science and I will also like to know how to use it as a gauge; when I'm chanced I might watch YouTube videos explaining this concept. But for now you can start here https://www.barchart.com/options/unusual-activity/stocks

Drenimarcus recommended Dominoes Pizza (DPZ) here on the thread a couple weeks ago as a benefactor to the coronavirus lockdown, but I didn't buy the stock and it has moved 10% since then. Papa John's (PZZA) another pizza chain announced that they are hiring 20,000 people to fulfil its "no contact" delivery of pizza and other food items. This is another company that cannot keep up with demand and should benefit in a time when traditional restaurants are shutting down. I just bought a few shares at $61.90

Just bought shares of Fastly (FSLY) @$22.44, I also bought one June 19th call contract with a $20 strike price. This is a highly speculative play.

I'm buying Amazon (AMZN). They are hiring about 75,000 people after just hiring 100,000 people last month. In a time when most companies are laying off employees, these guys can't even keep up with the demand. They had suspended sale of non essential items just to focus on really needed merchandise during the coronavirus outbreak but today they just announced that they will be selling non-essential items once again. As more people are stuck at home, they continue to buy everything online even groceries. This is one of my favourite companies of all time. I made $25k profit on this stock alone 2 yrs ago (https://www.nairaland.com/2460429/us-stock-market-even-playing/15). I bought 1 share at $2150 and plan to buy the dips.

Just seeing this now so happy and I gained from my tesla

Nice quick gain bro. There was some unusual options activity in the name, someone bought a really large option contract last week while predicting the stock will cross $600 before April 17th and it did. Maybe they are close to making a big announcement or someone has inside information, nobody knows. Rather than sell off, I will suggest you set a stop-limit order around $595, if it crosses that price the sell order will execute. You might lose some of your gains but if it doesn't go that low, you can ride it higher. I'm just saying what I will do if I just made a quick gain.

Hi Yeryer,

We are exploring a few things around margin and options but I cannot communicate anything concrete yet. We however have a demo trading account on the app and also allow fractional share purchases on US stocks as well.

Oh I didn't know there was a demo account and users can't fractional shares. I must commend you guys for what you are doing and I believe with time every minor issue will be worked out.

@Tommieen thanks for taking the time to stop by here and answer questions. I started investing in stocks 5 yrs ago when I came across a thread right here on Nairaland and it has helped me immensely, so I will never underestimate the potential of this platform. Back then though, there was virtually no way to trade US stocks from Nigeria so its really nice to see there are finally alternatives and I strongly believe you guys have first-mover advantage to corner this market. I just have a few questions: Is there any plan to allow margin and options trading on Trove? Also will it be possible to create a kind of paper trading account on Trove to allow new investors practice and test out strategies before trading with actual money? And lastly, will it be possible to buy fractional shares someday on the Trove app?

By the way, are you in Nigeria?

Oh I'm not in Nigeria but Ghanaians are allowed to use their platform. Maybe if there's much interest, it wouldn't be a bad idea to start an online campaign, get enough votes and urge them to consider adding Nigerians. But there are Nigerian brokers making great strides such as Trove, Chaka and Bamboo.

Check out this security monitoring company ADT. They install alarm and camera systems in private homes, apartments and businesses. By the end of 2019 they had 6.5million customers many of whom have multiyear contracts and automatic monthly payments. Their balance sheet doesn't look too good on the surface though, they have $9.7B in total debt but only $1B is due in 2021 and another $1B due in 2022 versus $1.5-$1.9 operating cash flow they generated since 2017. The stock is trading at only 9X earnings, moreover I also have a subscription with them. I bought a few shares yesterday at $4.35 a piece and I plan to add to this position, i'm already up 16%, stock propelled 8% today alone. I'm taking a chance here at the risk reward
I will do my best to post trades i'm making but I wouldn't advice anyone to buy simply based on my trades because sometimes I initiate a position purely based on speculation, sometimes based on fundamentals or technical analysis while some other times I might read an article or tweet and get curios

You got me thinking. In that same vein, Chewy.com (CHWY) is a good company that will benefit. Chewy.com sells pet food online and ships them to their customers. While the market sold off yesterday, the stock is up 15%. Will definitely watch this one closely.

This stock has rallied over 30% since this post. I bought a few shares and a call option, i'm up 50% since then.

Bear with me, my work schedule has been hectic since this outbreak, unfortunately I don't have the leisure of staying home. I've never heard of this company but I just looked them up and they are a pharmaceutical company that makes drugs for chicken pox. Last week they received a $14.3M contract to supply Canada a stockpile of their TPOXX oral chicken pox drug. Even though chicken pox has been eradicated, Canada is buying these drugs to stockpile should in case of a future outbreak. This corona virus outbreak has woken every government to the importance of being prepared for a bioterror attack or an unpredictable pandemic.
The stock has risen about 12% since you mentioned it but over the course of 12 months it has been trending lower. The stock price is currently $5.27 if it goes above $5.50 it might be a good entry point. Just note that this is a small cap stock, its market cap is $425M which is less than $1 billion which basically means that the stock moves may be more volatile. It might be speculative, but more countries may be on a shopping spree for such medications and vaccines.

Our beloved stock Zoom Video (ZM) is getting trashed. NY attorney general is investigating the company for some privacy issues. With the recent surge in new customers, the company is struggling to keep up with providing support and people are waiting on long queues before getting help. They went from 10 million daily active users in January to 200 million DAU. Moreover, this used to be a professional video conferencing platform used by schools and businesses but now teens are using the 60day free trial to have virtual cocktail parties and what not. I was lucky to get out at $146 for a profit. But right now the stock is trading at $115. If it drops to $110 I will be a buyer. I don't think much will come out of the investigation by the NY AG and having too much customers is a good problem to have. They are currently hiring more support staff, they should still come out ahead.

Thanks. I use my retirement savings plan for the ETF but have now switched my Tax Free Savings plan (TFSA) for trading which means I will not be taxed for every gain I make in this account however the tax authorities frowns against day to day trading and can slam you with hefty taxes of they realise you are actively trading.
My strategy is really long term and I'm even motivated to buy Tesla seeing they were at over $900 in Feb and you even went in at over $800, that means the price now is at a huge bargain.

That's really smart. Tesla is a bargain here especially if you are just initiating a position. It can make a v shape recovery or fall to $320 which will be an absolute bargain.

Watch that space.

I just wonder if they can make enough ventilators to actually boost their earnings. But then again, this is a company with zero earnings, so it wouldn't hurt. I'm watching and hoping stock price doubles overnight, I'm down 52%.

Hi everyone, I read through all the pages here and developed keen interest in trading US and Canadian stocks. I live in Canada but haven't bothered to trade myself since I use roboadvisors to purchase ETFs. I have now bought a few stocks and I'm monitoring others.
Thanks for all your contributions in this thread. Meanwhile I'm thinking of buying a few Tesla shares. What do you guys think?

ETFs are boring but they tend to beat active traders in the long run. Even though I know this fact, there's just something addictive and interesting about actually buying and selling individual stocks. It forces you to read about companies and learn about products and services. I don't know what your situation is, but always max out tax advantage retirement accounts first before trading stocks, at least that's my philosophy.

Tesla is like a cult stock, it's very volatile but they the company makes the best electric cars. You can dabble with a few shares, I'm currently down 43% but I'm still holding.

Honestly, I don't think it will be sustained. As a matter of fact I'm planning to short the airlines, cruislines and hotel if they shoot up today. I bought boeing, and some SPCE calls yesterday, these are just my short term plays. Like Oakpearl said, anything you do in this market depends on your horizon, long term investors have nothing to worry about. Short term investors should be swing trading. I think we will have a huge drop soon before we think about any form of normalcy.
I saw this post on Twitter from a user who said the last 4 times the DOW made a record 1 day gain, a depression followed.

Knowledge, knowledge, knowledge.
Let's keep sharing in the blessedness of knowledge exchange to better each other.
Point 2 does not apply to you if you ain't resident in the US.
But $1,400 free shares is quit a handsome free sum anywhere in the world.
So I'd implore our US based brothers and sisters to key in. grin

"Get two stocks for free up to $1400." The keyword is "up to"; they like using that term to attract more eyeballs and lure people to sign up. One of the brokerage I use also offers 1 free stock upon registration; their pitch is something like "how does it feel getting 1 free stock of TSLA, AAPL or DIS? but I received a $1.20 stock instead. So with Webull you can receive 2 free stocks from $1 -$1400. It's still a nice gesture though, they aren't obligated to give out anything for free; but they are also making money off you.

Zoom is a video conferencing platform that allows people to hold meetings online virtually from anywhere in the world. As more employers are asking workers to stay home, this stock is poised to benefit. Stock is up 50% from February 13th, though. Pick your entry point.

Zoom is up 20% today, I'm up 38%. I like the stock although I'm a bit concerned to find out that they offer 3 months free subscription; who's to say they people will still upgrade to a paid subscription once virus has been contained? I'm still positive on the name though.

Yes.
With all 50 states in the US now having confirmed cases of corona virus and US death toll up to 100, I believe COvid-19 has finally turned full cycle and will begin to subside soon.

The above category of stocks including Clorox, ZM, Moderna, INO etc who have been corona winners are likely going to do another round of upward movement before normalcy returns.

People may consider selling off ETF's before they start dwindling accordingly as they are typically short term plays.

Bro also add chewy.com (CHWY) to the list of potential winners. They sell pet food online and deliver to homes. Stock popped 15% yesterday. TDOC is also looking good

The SPY dropped 10% this morning. I think that's overdone but in scary times people trade irrationally. I bought 1 SPY call, I'm basically hoping that the spy bounces from these lows. Trump is expected to address the press in about 5hrs, just 30minites before the market closes. On Friday's close, the market rallied hard when Trump declared a national emergency and promised $50 billion in relief. Over the weekend the feds slashed interest rates to 0 but the market still sold off. I don't think the government can do anything to stop the market slide, not until the virus has been contained. Anyway, I'm hoping for a chance that the the market cuts its loss towards the end of trading today, then I will sell the call option.

Spy call from yesterday is up 30% from today's bounce

I never thought of this but fast food restaurants like Dominoes (DPZ) might benefit from all this. I live in New York, the governor has asked all restaurants, bars, clubs and schools to close down. So restaurant chains with a strong delivery network and focus like Dominoes might actually benefit since most people are home. Also looking at the chart, the mid February gap has filled.
