Let's be very frank here, the main problem here is we have very few single young men that has the resources to provide for Nigerian single women, I have been there and done it!! So what the poster here is saying he can't get single men that will carry her problems 100% over 50% of Nigerian single men are either hustlers or jobless and and most married Nigeria men are fairly better than their single counterpart when it come to cash and for that single reason married men now occupy the space that originally belongs to Single. Finally, Nigeria men are arguable the 'randiest male' globally so they will never stay loyal to their wives and I guess they can't be chasing married women so shame OP fell or is falling prey to these randy men |

erico2k2: guy think right, you made mention of london underground, do you have any idea howmany people work for London underground?could you immagine howmany people would be employed if this turns into reality? and it will definatly generate mor income for the state,But we cant be comparing any underground with that of London,it began there lol if fashola wants to create jobs, he should look for project that he can execute! not elephant project. The whole nigerian government can't even complete common Ajaokuta steel company, ALSCON or Delta Steel and you are talking of underground by a state , let Fashole build roads first or has he completed all the roads in lagos? I trust Nigerian Govt, on paper it will cost Fashola 100 times more to build underground of the same lenght of a London underground as the whole idea is elephant project will allow elephant stealing My people say any man wey use elephant set trap must catch dinosaurs so while build drainage and make small dough when you can build underground and make mega dough!! but it's better to build and steal than to steal and don't build like 'Thief' Ikedi Ohakim |

Fashola should spend money on flood control, create employment for Lagos youth and forget about train or tram whether underground or up ground!! how can someone who can't afford to maintain bicycle want to buy a car? is that not madness!! Netherlands has huge portion of it about 1meter below sea level but they have some undergrounds but not underground like city of london though.
Please Fashola start project that will provide jobs |

naijangel7: Yes, it is. It is an elected post and the student body could be as large as 25,000 students. In my uni where i got my first degree (northern Nigeria) the SU president had an official car and even acted as a go-between between the uni and the governor sometimes. I know what a Student Union President is or does, being a student union president alone does not make you a leader, what makes you a leader is what you did during your tenure. You might be a student union president that enjoyed all the luxury but did not achieve anything! So leadership is say for example leading the team as the SU president that help re-energise federal govt student bursary in 17 Federal Universities in Nigeria and I will ask you how you achieved it |

I think OP slightly misrepresented his argument here, the argument should be that she is not educated or read as the case may be but not she can't speak English! the fact still remains that we are still enslaved to our slave master by using there language to measure success!! The likes of Hu Jintao and Sarkozy don't speak English even my friend Putin public admitted that he won't speak English until his English is good enough. I understand the OP that this lady obviously is not educated and it's simply a shame that this is what zoning will lead us to some day in future, who knows may be they have zoned that position to her family and amongst the lot she is the best!! |

Summary of what not to include 1. Do not list salaries for the job or any previous job 2. Do not include personal information such as date of birth, marital status, religion, ethnic group, height, weight, or health 3. Do not includes names of supervisors or references. You may end your resume with statement "References available on request," but this is optional and can be omitted if you have space concerns. 4. Do not use the word Resume on top of the page Things to include 1. Include a career or job objective if it's specific. If your objective is general, instead include a summary of skills and qualifications. 2. Include all work experience and education. 3. Include any strengths and accomplishments in your job description. I remember asking an applicant in an interview that 'can you tell me when you have demonstrated a leadership quality?' the answer I got was I was the student union president is that a demonstration of leadership quality? |

semid4lyfe: @ the bolded part Not true (in all cases) and keep in mind that there are exceptions to most general rules. Also the environment matters. . .
A friend of mine who finished with a 3.1 and now works in a multinational courier company here got employed without putting his class of degree in his CV.
Hin just freestyle go there, begged and "tipped" the security man to collect his CV & help him submit it when the man begin dey yarn BS sey "we don't collect CV's and we always advertise when there are vacancies bla bla bla". About 2 mönths later, he got invited along with 9 others (6 with 2.2's & 3 with 2.1's) for a written test and later with 4 others (1 with 2.1, 3 with 2.2's) for an oral interview and he came out tops and at the end, he & another dude with 2.1 were the only ones employed.
It was some months later that audit was going through some employee files that it was discovered he finished with a 3.1. The head of recruitment was given a query for the oversight but by then it was kinda late to do anything about him and they just let him be. . . .this was in 2007 and he's stills there as of today. Interesting, He is still there till today. saxywale: what class of degree is 3.1
Things work differently in different countries. I had a friend in Nigeria who got employed above the other candidates because he stated on his CV that he was married, it was a federal civil service job though.
In the UK, putting your age on a CV is a big NO. Does not stop the employer from favouring a 38 years old candidate over a 24 years old candidate for an entry level role. If you are applying for a job as an air hostess, then it's a big plus if you put your picture on your CV, that's if you are beautiful anyway, Good point!! 10/10 (make somebody put the NIKE sign on my behalf) |

loma: Varies by country. In the US, you should not include age or gender or marital status.
Including class of degree or GPA is optional and usually depends on how good your GPA was and your years of experience. Sorry CV screening has a template and most companies use template to allow for fairness, and it works like a flow chart for example in the UK the first question in the flow chart is 1. Is applicant a British National or from any of the EEC countries? if Yes proceed and if No (STOP) but some companies goes to number 2 2. Is applicant currently authorised to work in the UK? if yes proceed if No stop (some will proceed to #3) 3. Is applicant able to obtain permit to work in UK from his current circumstances if yes proceed if No stop. 4. Is applicant qualification up to the mininum standard that is Chartered or in process, Phd or Master with experience, BSc or HND if yes proceed if no stop 5. Is applicant grade up to the minimum requirement na here agabada dey hang for barb wire, if yes proceed if no or not written on CV STOP This goes on until final elimination series and the questions does not include Is applicant male or female Is applicant tall or short Is applicant fat or slim Is applicant black or white Date of birth Pretty or wor wor na so our own be sha but una own fit different |

rhymz: I don't know about others but if you studied engineering in school and after graduation you are going to look for job, be sure to lay emphasis on aquired skills and industrial work experience, especially during your industrial training program. Your employers are more interested in your ability to do or understand the job or even withstand the pressure of the job than a 2.1 or 2.2.Reminds me of my 1st degree days, I studied Mech Eng and due to my taste for practical knowledge, I never could understand the relevance of the needless impracticable courses we kept doing. At a point, I started skipping classes but was reading mech Eng books way beyond the limits of the outdated courses, it kind of affected my grades as I found it hard to reconcile the units and methods used by lecturers who were using outdated indian text books as against the standard American and British textbooks obsessed myself with. I would explain certain aspects of some theories in thermodynamics during lectures and my lecturer will be dumbfounded and in arrogance dismiss it as not in the purview of our course outline. I got frustrated with the system and started my own solo university education and concentrated on getting practical experience to match the theories and stuff. I remember when I had to do my I.T, while my friends where busy doing their I.T programs in banks and telecom companies, I chose to do it in production factories and damn that was where I learnt the importance of industrial experience. I did 3months in a plastic production company then another six months in a biscuit company. Needless to say the repercussion was a 2.2 result, even my pals could not believe it, my folks where little disappointed but still showed understanding cos they knew I was more intelligent than the suggestion of my results. I was not even disturbed cos I know I will eat up any 2.1 or even 1st class when it comes to mech engineering especially if it has to do with industrial production engineering which was my major. When I prepared my CV, those were the highlights of my CV, I emphasised on my industrial experience, gave details of my responsibilties during my I.T programs as a trainee in those production factories, my accomplishments and skills aquired. I remember then my first job interview while I was still waiting for NYSC posting, the personnel manager of the company I worked for went through my CV, saw how detailed I wrote about my experiences during my I.T, my emphasis on skills I aquired, I automatically got the job. I even told the PM that I intend to do my NYSC primary assignment with them, he gladly agreed even without having seen copies of my certificate and other credentials or even the grade, he was more interested that I had the needed pre-requisite skill and experience to man their machines or understand them in a space of few months. I was instantly placed in the maintenance dept and given the full benefits of gradute entrants in the engineering firm. Another very important thing to note when preparing your CV, instead of putting second class lower for those of us with 2.2 and below, you are better of putting second class honours. That gives you the chance to be considered for an interview, the moment you state clearly your grade, you leave yourself open for discrimination by prospective employers. I no dey try dat kind mistake o. . .lol Sorry I've not read the whole of your lines, I'm a recruiter and a member of the CV screening team, One of our key requirement is grade and it must not be lower than 2:1 except where applicant has additional higher degree then 2.2 may be considered. Work experience now becomes a secondary screening requirement where degree is the primary meaning if I have 5 applicant wt the same degree and grade, the one with work experience will go up the ladder. What is work experience? For a graduate jobs, experience work experience is your internship or IT and those odd jobs you did while in school such as cleaning, customer service in Asda, M&S, volunteer with British Heart Foundation etc. Work experience must not be working in Big banks and an oil company and this has made a lot of people fill up their CVs with lies and junks and finally, always remember the CV you have submitted you don't want to apply for Reliability Engineers job only to appear with warehouse supervisor's CV |

A 16 yr old girl was handed a CV format to complete Name , Shola Adeobi Address, 16 Ilupeju St Amuwo Odofin, Lagos Sex, 39 times Please don't include sex in your CV, as some employers have preference and secondly no over selling or under selling just be sure the CV doesn't read 'the only man in my school to have ever graduated with first class in the history of the college of Medicine! Avoid big Title like 'High Chief John Okon' or Pastor, chief Imam or Native Doctor Johnson Okoronkwo just because you know the owner of the company is a Pastor/Imam. Finally avoid age if you are applying for job in a country where you are not allowed to discriminate people because of their age unfortunately Nigeria is on of the countries that discriminate people because of age e.g. Do not apply if you are over 29 years old as over 29 should be kidnappers and robbers!!! tEsLim: I posted this earlier and the silly anti spam bot flagged my post. THis is the third time cos i can't type all this and expect to read it only.
Well before you move back to Nigeria this are the things I"ll consider you do:
*Come home often on vacation. First you come maybe spend 30days. Then come with the family to see how they can adapt to the country. DO this routinely till you are comfortable and take time to build more contacts you can kinda trust a little in Nigeria. Stay away from doing business with family and old friends they're worse. No FAMILY BUSINESS. Visit places around the major cities.
*Becareful about business here. See even if you try form being local; any body can spot a janded person Cheesy , regarldess of how hardcore you are. And stay away from bank investments in Nigeria the stocks are big frauds over-rated stocks. Imagine a bank borrowed my friend to buy into their bank and even when they know that their prices will fall soon. Dont ever do any virtual business in Nigeria. Stay physical buy and sell and do stufs that are liquidation i.e importing fast moving goods. How building property for sale/ rent or use like HOTEL. I stick and believe in real estate. I can sell my sh.it anytime I want and get money back. I've been burnt several times with other investment vehicle. And beware there lots of 419ers even on nairaland :p
*Note the office and home will run on diesel/petrol daily but petrol is cheaper here than anywhere I know abroad 65 naira per litter. You need to build a house I think its cheaper thats what I did. Buy a land invest a year or two you should be able to build something to your taste that you will be comfortable with. Dont wait till you have $100k at a go. Well sinking a borehole is standard just around 120k is what I paid for mine. A gated secured estate will be good.
*Be ready to per a lot for rubbish private schools that are just like public school standard abroad for the kids. Well health care isn't bad since you dont pay tax you will use one of the private hospitals. Dont go for big names just make sure they can take care of your health simple. They're like the same and most time what I get is malaria. Stay away from public water and pure water in nylons (I got typoid in a week Sad). Always use the dispenser or be sure of the water
*Could be very profitable for business but got its own traps. Trust is ZERO even among your staffs, suppliers , mechanic, carpenter everybody just wanna rip each other. But i keep the business liquidation so i can back out , always make sure you have good exit strategy.
When you visit Nigeria more often you might have a clearer picture. But for me I only always come back to Nigeria because I can't leave my kids/family behind. And can't be on a visa to enjoy living abroad. I plan to become a permanent resident/naturalize say in the US/Canada/Australia (I didn't like Europe because of language barrier). After naturalizing then bring my family. We can or I may return when I'm 50+ years thats like in 20 years from now. People look at me and say I'm blessed here in Nigeria (it doesn't end with owning a home, having nice car --- i want comfort! security etc). I've had failed business that I can actually say its due to running them in Nigeria. Imagine how a small business will survive spending minimum of N50k on just fueling generator monthly and dont forget I have generators at home too. But I've seen and traveled a little -- i taught things was ok till i started traveling few years ago. I rather even settle in South Africa than Nigeria was there for the world cup that place is like Europe with Majority black and the gap between poor and rich ain't much and food is cheap those are how I tell if a country is good. Its good to visit Nigeria often to keep contact and keep connected to the country.
I dont see any quick solutions to the problems of Nigeria. We should DIVIDE maybe there will be little progress. People always think they have been bewitched or there is one juju somewhere worrying them. The only juju is the Nigerian government! The politicians. People are reall struggling but damn basic things to make life easy are not there. You pray to God everyday, wrongly. Prayers an eyinbo can't imagine. Like God let their be electricity tomorrow so I can iron my cloths to office damn! The only witchcraft disturbing you is the government. Its not the witch in your village that got you changing shock absorber/engine protector/radiotor its bad road, silly road accidents, silly deaths even at the hospital because no electricity for surgery. Hey! Dem no teach you summary for school? who do you expect to read this your magazine? |

@ topic - A USA education is the best as long as the child has a green card. Max he/she can work for a yr or two to raise enough money to enter school or qualify for a FAFSA loan. It seems to me the aunt is trying to keep her here so she can forfeit the green card. I believe her guardians are sponsoring her for the green card primarily because she is under 21. If she stays back in naija and gets over 21, she loses that green card. Better to take it now! Education here (US) is BAD-A$$. It's sweet. lol. It's makes you want to study (If you know what you're doing).
It's better to hustle in Naija than to hustle in yankee. Hustling get levels o. But if he can work HARD and study at the same time, then no problem.
Or is the child wayward?
Or wait o, if the child is gonna get a green card then I don't think it's gonna be that bad.
Is it compulsory she must study in the first 2 years? She can spend first 2 years working and save enough to give her the privilege to work reduced hours when studying and that is a better approach because that worked for me |

who knows what will becomes Nigerian economy by the time he graduates.
greencard is worth less than the academic opportunity he has right now. by the time he finishes his first degree, he will be a better person than the unnecessary struggle and the unknowns that may be waiting in amerca.
and you know that it takes a split second to get lost in the potential horror called United States. Not all glitters are gold. I think the organisers needs to look at another competion for Yorubas to win e.g BYGN -Biggest Yansh Girl In Nigeria because with that you can guarantee a yoruba winner minus that, only Igbo girls will be winning it 95% of time as they are the prettiest people in Nigeria |
