Last year his organization supported 30 inmates with NECO and WAEC/GCE to inmates in Lagos and Ebonyi states many of whom are now in National open University of the Correctional Centers.

Launched in 2014 by the administration of President Barack Obama, the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is a US-sponsored programme that empowers young people through academic coursework, leadership training and networking.

Every year, the fellowship provides hundreds of outstanding young leaders from sub-Saharan Africa with the opportunity to hone their skills as they participate in a six-week intensive academic and leadership programme at US colleges and universities, with a focus on Business & Entrepreneurship, Civic Leadership, Public Management, and Renewable Energy.

Upon conclusion of the Leadership Institutes, the fellows will attend the annual Mandela Washington Fellowship Summit in Washington DC They will engage in high-level workshops and dialogues with top US government officials, representatives from businesses and organizations interested in Africa.

For the 2023 application cycle, of the 14,000 young Nigerians that applied, less than 200 applicants made it to the semi-final stage and only 57 of us were eventually awarded the fellowship. I am happy to be amongst the selected change makers.

“In June, I will be heading to Drexel University in Pennsylvania in Philadelphia to study Leadership and Civic Management. I look forward to learning new things and creating meaningful and long-lasting relationships and partnerships that will enhance the growth of my non-profit foundation and expand the scope and impacts of our work.

“I believe the fellowship will also provide me with a plethora of opportunities in the International Development space, helping me forge strategic alliances with colleagues across Africa and the United States. It will also empower me with the requisite skills to work in a multicultural and global environment.”

Mahfuz appreciated the United States government for investing in the next generation of young African leaders through the Mandela Washington Fellowship.

The Educationist and Prison educator said his Foundation is for the reformation and liberation of inmates and juveniles through quality education and would continue to provide this education in ensuring inmates have access to quality education for the growth and development of the nation for a better society we all desire.

As part of the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPAII) project, Inspired Youth Network (IYN) in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria held a day-long event at Ikorodu, Lagos to commemorate the 2022 International Youth Day.

In a press statement, the group noted that the programme seeks to bridge the gap between generations (young and old), encouraging partnership across generations and fighting the barrier to attaining an inclusive world, as this solidarity is imperative to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The young people at the event made a demand to both the state and federal government on things they want to see change and particularly, their inclusion in good governance which is a drive to National Development.

The organisers celebrated the actions and initiatives of young people working earnestly for a fair, just, and equitable society.

International Youth Day is celebrated annually on 12 August to bring youth issues to the attention of the international community and celebrate the potential of youth as partners in today’s global society.

In his comments, the founder of IYN, Ayomikun Olugbode, made a wake-up call to the youths to be unique, different, and not to underestimate their ability to make a change in their respective communities and not be too comfortable in settling for the inability of the society.

He encouraged young people to make use of every resource available and turn it into an opportunity to achieve the society and development they desire.

The event also featured a panel discussion that revolves around the theme of the 2022 celebration, “Intergenerational solidarity- Creating a world for all ages”.

Former member of the Nigeria Youth Parliament, Olafare Comfort, urged women to have a positive change mindset. “No one should be an instrument of intimidation to them instead they should act now,” she said.

On his part, the Coordinator of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ikorodu west, Asoro Abubakri encouraged participants to be bold, innovative and challenging in pushing their ideas.

Charter of demands
The young people urged the government to create job opportunities to reduce the vulnerability of young people indulging in violent extremism, drug abuse and other social vices.

Also, they urged the government to meet the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for Nigerian students to go back.

Also, to ensure the inclusion of youths in budgetary processes, and a review in the educational sector to meet demands of unions to avert the prolonged crises with ASUU which directly is affecting the young Nigerian student.

They added that the government should ensure re-orientation to all religious, cultural, and inter-ethnic tolerance to foster peace, security, and national cohesion.

Education / Nigerian Youths Laud European Union's €10m Education Intervention In Borno by YossyInfo(f): 7:20pm On Jun 21, 2022
by Taoheed Adegbite

As the European Union Delegation and its implementing partner, Plan International, concluded the three-year intervention on easy access to education for children in Borno State, the EU Youth Sounding Board in Nigeria, has described the intervention as a giant stride exigent for the people of the state.

The Youth Sounding Board expressed confidence in the impact of the support by the EU, noting that the intervention has contributed to making Borno State more resilient to the insurgency and its negative impact.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Youth Sounding Board, the board described the European Union's effort at reinvigorating the education sector as essential, adding that the constant retrogression of education in the North East is alarming as a result of security challenges ravaging the region.

"The European Union Youth Sounding Board in Nigeria is quite alarmed at the constant retrogression of Education in the North East. The security challenges in the country have become a constant threat to children and their future. The fundamental human rights expose the importance of life and education however the case has not been so since the beginning of the insurgency in the Northeast."

"The condition of the learning environment is also a major setback as knowledge is as good as the kind of environment it is being impacted on. The European Union and Plan International focused on improving the situation to enable children to have access to quality education in a safe and conducive environment equipped with a water facility."

The Youth Sounding Board explained that during visits to two benefiting schools of the projects namely; Federal Low-Cost Primary School and Government Girls Secondary School, YSB members discovered that most students had great prospects and were fully aware of what they wanted to become in the future.

At the point of closure of the intervention, over five hundred and fifty thousand people have been directly and indirectly reached throughout the program's lifetime. The YSB described this as a ‘great stride’ and urged the state government to improve its efforts to ensure education for all children is feasible in a safe environment while also calling on the federal government and international bodies to spotlight these areas and provide further support to restore the state to the peacefulness once experienced.

Meanwhile, Mr Charles Usie, Country Director of Plan International, the implementing partner for the project, had earlier disclosed during the closeout ceremony in Maiduguri on Tuesday that the €10 million programmes funded by the European Union has helped over 13,000 children return to school while many young people in Borno State benefited from life-skills, employability and business training.

Education / EU Youth Sounding Board Empowers Pupils In Borno Schools by YossyInfo(f): 1:57am On Jan 26, 2022
In commemoration of the International Day of Education 2022, the European Union Youth Sounding Board in Nigeria has provided 150 pupils of the Federal Low-Cost Primary School and Government Girls Secondary School, both in Maiduguri, Borno State, with COVID-19 relief materials, to improve learning outcomes and renew the hope of out-of-school children, especially in conflict ravaging areas in the country.

The board also produced an educational video documentary on challenges facing teachers and pupils in this area to further draw the attention of relevant stakeholders to the state of education in Borno.

With the theme “Changing Course, Transforming Education”, this year’s International Day of Education aims to strengthen resilience, hope and revive education that suffered a major setback due to COVID-19.

Insecurity, coronavirus and other unprecedented issues have kept many vulnerable Nigerian children out of school. According to UNICEF, “Even though primary education is officially free and compulsory, about 10.5 million of the country’s children aged 5-14 years are not in school. Only 61 percent of 6-11 year-olds regularly attend primary school and only 35.6 percent of children aged 36-59 months receive early childhood education”.

According to the spokesperson of the board, Ms Rafiat Atanda, said the European Union Youth Sounding Board embarked on the exercise because it recognizes that education is essential to global recovery and in achieving all the Sustainable Development Goals. “It is important that education is prioritised and no child, regardless of where they are, should be left behind. Access to quality education can neither be politicised nor negotiated,” she said.

She said the Delegation of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS is supporting the Board in the current effort. “The EU recognises that education is a fundamental human right, and is the pathway to a sustainable future. Thus, it is passionately nurturing the Nigerian child through timely interventions and strategic partnerships,” Ms Atanda stated.

Similarly, the Lead of the Human Development Committee, European Union Youth Sounding Board in Nigeria, Mr Ebuka Peter Alumona, said his committee collaborated with the Green and Digital Economy Committee to headline the event “in order to help children in the conflict area reimagine education.”

The EU Youth Sounding Board in Nigeria calls on all relevant stakeholders to ensure safe access to education, especially through digital supports and learning aids that leave no one behind- regardless of their gender, location, age or social strata.

Ms Atanda expressed gratitude to the European Union and its implementing partners, Plan International as well as Co-Development Hub, for their support. She said the Board would continue to engage strategically to recreate a world in harmony.

Education / Failed Consistently, Became A University Scholar And Now An Author by YossyInfo(f): 10:05am On Oct 19, 2020
Written by Mariam Ileyemi

Listening to David Odunsi, the current Medical Director of Rotaract District 9110, recount how he failed consistently while growing up, will boost anyone’s morale to keep striving for greatness and never to give up on success. Behold the success story of a young man, who almost gave up after failing consistently in secondary school and moved on to achieving a first class grade of 4.83 out of 5.00 in his first year in the University, as well as receiving a National scholarship, Mariam Ileyemi writes…

Nobody loves to be a failure, including David Odunsi whose name was pasted severally on the notice board of his school as one of the dullest students in his class. He continued to struggle academicallly even after passing only three subjects in his General Certififiacte Examination (GCE). He went on to become a University scholar and now the Author of the book; Exploding The Academic Bomb In You, recently launched virtually on September 12.

From Failure to Success

David’s journey from failure to success is such that was fueled by hardwork, desire and consistency.

“Having been held back academically and almost giving up on myself, I experienced a dramatic change in life and moved on from consistent failures to achieving a first class grade of 4.83 out of 5.00 in my first year in the University as well as receiving a National scholarship.

“My GCE result was so bad that money was not even wasted to print it, rather it was written with a pencil on a blank paper. However I experienced a turning point when I came in contact with some books that challenged my mind like Gifted Hands by Ben Carson. I followed keenly how those individuals rose from nothing to something academically.

“I had a spark that triggered me to begin the long journey of attaining academic excellence, that same year within the space of six months, I consistently studied. I had series of setbacks but never gave up.

Bagging Several Awards

David’s outstanding academic performances qualified him for academic and non academic awards and nominations. From winning a National Scholarship and becoming a University scholar in 2012, 2013 and 2014. He bagged awards such as the Academic Excellence award of Excellence Brain College, SDG honorary ambassador, Best delegate Africa Model United Nations. In his service to humanity, he has won over 7 awards as a member of the prestigious Rotaract club as well as receiving an award from the Nigeria National PolioPlus Committee in recognition of his support towards the fight against Poliovirus.

Author of Exploding the Academic Bomb in You

In a society where a scarcity of public figures to serve as inspiration for the younger generation is being witnessed, his story of moving from the bottom of the class while in Junior High School to the top in the University continues to inspire young people.

Having taught principles for attaining academic excellence to hundreds of students who have now risen to become academic geniuses and highflyers in various tertiary institutions , of which some of them are now first class graduates, in a bid to send out the message of hope that no student is a dullard but a bomb waiting for the right spark to be ignited, he published his book “Exploding The Academic Bomb In You” which was launched in September.

“One of the hallmarks of the book is the fact that it challenges the status quo that excellence is only for a selected few that only providence gives, rather than use big formulae or draining principles he deployed unimaginably simple yet efficacious insights hence making the book stand out and the points practicable such that any student irrespective of the current academic status can apply it and achieve success.

David’s book is fast selling. The Chief Launcher of the book was Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello; the highly revered Professor of Physiology and former Acting Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, other guests included Professor Bidemi Bilikis Lafiaji-Okuneye; Provost, Adeniran Ogunsanya College Of Education, Dr Saibu Morounke; Biochemistry Lecturer, Mr Segun Oloyede; Proprietor, Excellence Brain College, and so on.

One of the author’s past student, Ajayi Saheed commented that the author was someone that inspired him a lot and believed in people and it is because of that passion for people that made him to write the book to help students who may be having one academic difficulty or the other, another student Chigozie Olikagu, a 500 level student of University of Nigeria Nsukka mentioned that he particularly feel excited that the book was coming from his mentor, someone that had imparted him phenomenally and believes every student will be able to draw insights from the book.

The book was described by the foreword writer; Dr Mgbajah Ogadinma ( First Female Heart Surgeon In West Africa) as a dynamite that has a message that will make the difference in the lives of students and anyone who desires success.

David is currently planning on embarking on a tour to public schools to speak with students in a bid to revive the dwindling reading culture and help students deal with the effects of academic dormacy post covid 19 considering the fact that they have been home for about six months.

This is an exclusive posts for David Odunsi written by Mariam Ileyemi, founder Yossy Info

Health / COVID-19 Pandemic In Lagos; Before And After The Lockdown by YossyInfo(f): 8:49pm On Apr 10, 2020
Written by Moyosereoluwa Eleso
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread across the world particularly Nigeria, the question on the lips on many is whether or not the lockdown which started on 30th of March in Lagos and FCT will be extended.

To answer this question and in considering the possibility of a lockdown extension in Lagos, it is important to analyze the COVID-19 cases in Lagos before and after the lockdown. The first case of coronavirus in Nigeria was discovered February 27th. The Italian man returned to Lagos from Milan February 24 and went to Ogun state a
day after. It was in Ogun his case was discovered and moved to Lagos. Even the second case was a contact of the
first case discovered March 9 in Ogun state too.

By 13th March, a flight arrived Lagos and that was where it all started in full force. A woman who traveled in from the UK on the March 13th flight tested positive for COVID-19, 17th March. With this, we could say the first case discovered in Lagos was on 17th March.

At this time, Lagos was managing all 3 cases in Nigeria (2 from Ogun, 1 discovered in Lagos). By 18th March,
there were additional 4 cases in Lagos bringing the number to 7 in Lagos, 8 in Nigeria. Another 4 became positive
by 19th march bringing Lagos cases to 11.

On that same 19th, Lagos recorded the first local transmission out of the 4 recorded cases; A Nigerian male in
his 50s never traveled anywhere presented with symptoms and was tested positive of the virus and has been admitted. By 20th, index case was discharged. By 21st, Lagos got another 7 cases bringing the total to 18. But at this time, first 2 cases had recovered. 3 cases were discovered 22nd March bringing total in Lagos to 21. Another 3 were discovered same 22nd bringing the total to 24cases but if you remove the 2 from Ogun, Lagos has 22 discovered cases. By 23rd, there were 3 confirmed cases bringing Lagos discovered cases to 25.

24th March saw 4 new cases bring the total number to 29 cases in Lagos and before the end of 24th March, 1
more case was discovered in Lagos bringing the total to 30.
On 26th March, 2 new cases were announced; with the total now 32 in Lagos but surprisingly before the end of the same day, Lagos got 12 new cases taking the number to 44. 27th March saw the addition of 8 new cases bringing it up to 52 and another 7 cases were recorded 28th March leaving Lagos with a total of 59. 9 cases were confirmed 29th March and with that Lagos had 68 cases. By 30th March, same day the Lockdown started, Lagos had 13 confirmed cases bringing the total to 81.

Now, fast forward to 10days after lockdown; by 9th April 2020, Lagos has a total of 158 COVIDー19 cases.
Of the 158 overall cases in Lagos;
39 have been discharged, 3 deaths, 2 evacuated, and 114 active cases.
This implies that Lagos has recorded 77 new cases within 10days of lockdown with indications that local
transmission is increasing.

Looking at the statistics I just gave for Lagos COVID-19 records with; 81 cases before lockdown, 77 new cases 10days after lockdown. That is, 81 cases in 13days & 77cases in 10days

Do you think the end is in sight?

Would you support an extension of lockdown in Lagos?

Health / Coronavirus: How Nigeria Can Minimise The Risk Of Infection by YossyInfo(f): 1:57pm On Mar 21, 2020
Written by Rafiat Atanda

It's no longer news that Coronavirus, an infectious disease that started in Wuhan, is spreading in an increasingly alarming rate all over the world. According to the World Health Organisation, the virus already has its footprints in over 169 countries and territories with at least 8,778 recorded deaths and 209,000 infections. Scarily, the numbers keep skyrocketing on a daily basis. However, to minimise the risk of infection, countries all over the world are taking measures such as: enforcing self-quaratine, shutting down of schools, canceling international conferences, games and events, and so on.

In Nigeria, the first coronavirus case was reported on the 27th of February and the number has risen to 12. Although this number is significantly small when compared to the outlandish spread of the virus in other parts of the world, yet Nigeria can not sleep with its eyes closed. Unless it pays attention to the overwhelming masses that make a large part of its population- the market men and women, as well as children in semi-urban and rural areas- Nigeria might surprisingly match side-by-side with the numbers from other parts of the world and even surpass them.

I know a number of experts have recommended regular handwashing, sanitising with an alcohol based hand sanitizer, practising social distance, etc. as ways to minimise the spread of the virus. I am, however, of the opinion that for a country like Nigeria, communication has been partial, leaving out the vast majority of people who are unlettered. For the most part, information dissemination on coronavirus in the country has been in the English Language. We cannot forget too soon that we are a heterogeneous people and even though English Language is our official language, illiteracy still remains one of the key problems Nigeria is grappling with. This sorts of leave the traders out, and lets them erroneously nurse the thought that coronavirus is for the elites and they are immune to it. Also, public and partially elevated private school children are not being targeted in communication. We are all at a greater risk, considering this population caters to our needs, directly or indirectly.

Therefore, for Nigeria to minimise the risk of infection, it is pertinent that traders (market men and women) and children who live in well populated and rural areas are well educated on the virus and its impact on the world. This means that information dissemination should not just be in English; it should be rendered in indigenous languages, too.

Education / Students For Peace: Csos Train LASU Students On Advocacy by YossyInfo(f): 2:54pm On Dec 06, 2019
The Students for Peace (S4P) in Lagos State University have been trained by two Civil Society Organizations to become advocates against Hate Speech and Online Violence against Women at WANEP, Ikeja Lagos on November 26, 2019.

The training which was aimed at educating the Students for Peace and also to enhance their capacity to raise awareness on hate speech and online violence against women in the school and surrounding communities, was organized by Centre for Information (CITAD) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI), proudly supported by the United States Agency for International Development USAID and UKAID.

According to the Lagos Centre Cordinator, Nahima Ajikanle-Nurudeen in the welcome remarks noted that the training was designed in such a way that would help students understand and promote the need for an enabling environment free from hate speech and gender based violence. Nahima added that it would also provide the right knowledge to propagate communities, as students ambassadors and members for peace initiative.

After which a pre-assessment to determine current knowledge of participants on hate speech and violence against women online was conducted by Shazali Sanusi of CITAD.

Annabel Ugwoke, the Program Officer at NDI equipped participants with knowledge of Gender Based Violence (GBV), which she explained as a human rights violation, a public health challenge, and a barrier to civic, social, political, and economic participation. Gender-based violence (GBV) is violence that is directed at an individual based on his or her biological sex OR gender identity. It includes physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, and psychological abuse, threats, coercion, and economic or educational deprivation, whether occurring in public or private life.

Annabel cited the United Nation’s Population Fund and the United Nations Women statistics, 1 in 3 and 1 in 4 women respectively, have experienced physical or sexualized violence in their lifetime. She added by proposing possible solution to GBV, which include, families should promote gender equality from their home and among their children, civic and social studies should be broadened in school to include GBV, ensure implementation of law of laws to equally protect rights of women and men, and also ensure adequate punishment of those who engage in GBV.

The session for Hate speech was ably facilitated by Hamza Ibrahim of CITAD, who enlightened participants on Hate speech and ways of identifying it, which include, examining the speech item to know if it dehumanize a particular group of people, persuading people to take violent action on persons of certain identity or locations, advocate discrimination, or does it ask people to beat, injure other people.

Hamza also gave supporting exercise to provide a foundation for the advocacy campaign, targets and strategies to access identified targets, after which the training ended by letting participants brainstorm on the treated sessions to come up with ideas to reach out to communities in order to conduct sensitization activities with the school and surrounding communities.
