Politics / State Of Insecurity: Nigeria Must Not Break Up – OBJ, IBB by youngies(m): 7:23am On Jul 30, 2012
The statement by the duo reads thus:

“Unfolding events in our dear motherland, Nigeria, over the last few years are threatening to unravel the nearly a century-old labour of our founding fathers and subsequent generations in building a strong, united, peaceful nation that can accommodate and cater for the needs and aspirations of our diverse communities. Internecine crises are raging across the land unabated with damaging consequences on the social, political and economic life of the nation. And in the process untold hardships are being visited on all citizens in one form or another on a daily basis. The loss of innocent lives being experienced by the day across the nation is simply unbearable. Currently, the nation is gripped by a regime of fear and uncertainty that virtually all citizens have difficulties going about their normal day to day lives without great anxiety and trepidation. This cannot be allowed to continue!

“A deeply worrying trend that is emerging from this terrible situation is that a pervasive cynicism is beginning to set in, so much so that millions of true Nigerian patriots are starting to question the platform upon which the unity of this country rests. This is simply untenable. The people of this country must not allow whatever sense of frustration, fear and despair we are experiencing now to supersede our hopes for a collective destiny which lies in our continued existence as a nation. For us, and we believe for millions of other Nigerians, the continued unity of this nation is not only priceless but non-negotiable.

“While we are very much aware of the efforts various governments in the country are making to confront the escalating security challenges across the country, we believe that it is time that these efforts are scaled up to be more involving and inclusive. In this regard, whatever robust security measures are put in place to contain the situation, as is normal in such circumstances, they must be complemented with an equally intensive process of community involvement. We, therefore, urge all governments in the country, starting with all the 774 local councils to comprehensively engage their communities at the various levels including elders, youth organisations, trade unions and associations, women bodies, the clergy and other community stakeholders. We also call on the Federal and states governments not only to encourage these grassroots engagements for peace and beneficial coexistence but should work out the framework to sustain the engagement. In all these efforts it is important to emphasise that our diversity is a cause for celebration not a cause for lamentations.

“As the Holy Month of Ramadan commences, Nigerians wherever they are and whatever religion they profess are accorded a great opportunity to turn the tide against insecurity, violence and hatred. Religious leaders, in particular, have an even greater challenge to use the immense virtues of this holy period to inculcate among the millions of citizens the spirit of mutual respect, humility and forgiveness. Ample opportunities are therefore at hand to bring all armed belligerents to table for meaningful dialogue with the authorities for our future and that of our children and grandchildren.

Politics / FCT Minister Defends Revocation Of Turai Yar’adua’s Land by youngies(m): 7:04am On Jul 30, 2012
MINISTER of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Bala Mohammed, has defended the action of the FCT administration in revoking the plot of land allocated to the former First Lady, Hajiya Turai Yar’Adua’s Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Women and Youth Empowerment Foundation (WAYEP) and restoring same to its original institutional owners, the African First Ladies Peace Mission for the building of its secretariat in Abuja.

Meanwhile, a social crusader and erstwhile Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Tsav, has condemned the revocation of the land earlier allocated to WAYEP.

Mohammed, yesterday also faulted the statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Alhaji Lai Mohammed, at the weekend, claiming that the FCT minister took ‘a choice plot’ from WAYEP and reallocated it to the incumbent First Lady, Patience Jonathan’s NGO, African First Ladies Peace Mission.

The FCT minister described Lai Mohammed’s statement as not only misleading, but blackmail against Patience Jonathan and the FCT administration.

According to the minister in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Nosike Ogbuenyi, there is no ‘scandal’ whatsoever with regard to the altruistic corrective measure by the FCT administration to restore the land to the original allottee, the African First Ladies Peace Mission.

He said the FCT administration deserved kudos not umbrage for its effort in retrieving the land from a private NGO and returning same to its original owner, the African First Ladies Peace Mission for the development of its continental secretariat in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city.

He further pointed out that the African First Ladies Peace Mission was neither owned nor sponsored by the current First Lady of Nigeria, Patience Jonathan, as wrongly claimed by the ACN publicity secretary, adding that she only inherited the project from her predecessor and would definitely handover same to her successor as First Lady.

Politics / 'I Cut My Son's Stomach To End Relationship With His Father' - Joy Akule by youngies(m): 8:58am On Jul 29, 2012
A 28-year-old woman, Miss Joy Akule, who allegedly used a knife to cut her 11-year-old biological son is now in police net for attempted murder charge. Miss Akule said she cut the child for sharing between her and her live-in lover, Mr Thomas Kationa.

Miss Akule had confessed to the police that she attempted to “share” the victim in order to cut off an old relationship with his father.

The woman, a resident of Sabuwar Abuja Quarters in Panshekara, Kumbotso local government area of Kano State, was said to have stabbed the son with a knife in his stomach to the extent of revealing his intestines.

Kano State police commissioner, Alhaji Ibrahim K. Idris, told journalists yesterday that the woman who hails from Katsina-Ala in Benue State had confessed to the alleged crime.

The commissioner said that the victim was later rushed to the hospital for treatment and was recuperating.

Joy Akule later told journalists in a chat that she attempted slashing the victim into two because of the pervasive misunderstanding between her and her live-in lover in order to bring to an end their relationship. “We have been having misunderstanding and I want the relationship to come to an end,” she said.

The woman, in a hush-laden voice, told journalists, “I wanted to cut the relationship, so, I attempted to cut this boy so that his father can take his share and I take my share.”

The commissioner had also spoken on the arrest of a fake police corporal Shehu Garba, who claimed to be serving at Birnin Kebbi and was on a sick leave but engaged in defrauding people in Kano.

Politics / Anambra Oil Field Ready For Commissioning Next Month by youngies(m): 8:38am On Jul 29, 2012
ANAMBRA State Commissioner for Special Duties, Vincent Ezenwajiaku, a lawyer, has given the assurance that facilities at the Aguleri-Otu oil flow station would be completed and ready for commissioning by President Goodluck Jonathan during his visit to the State on August, 30 this year.

Ezenwajiaku, who heads the Implementation Committee on the Presidents’ visit, while on tour with newsmen to ascertain the level of work at the site yesterday, observed that the job was going on according to specifications and would be completed on time.

He explained that he was satisfied with the level of work already executed by the Niger Cat Construction Company handling the project, adding that the ramps, helipad, helipark and car parks would be ready before the President’s visit.

Speaking to newsmen, the site engineer, Niger Cat construction Company, Samir A. Chanine, also confirmed that all facilities at the flow station would be ready within the next few weeks, just as he identified rainfall and floods as major impediments.

“We are working in swampy area, and rainfall is slowing down the work. Actually, we are doing our best to complete the job on time, Chanine said.

He added: “The helipad for landing a helicopter is ready and the helipark is almost completed. We are constructing ramps for crossing the river linking the oil field; two car parks, and work on the 4.3 km road from Umueje in Aguleri is nearing completion. All will be ready before the President’s visit”.

In his contribution, the drilling Engineer at the oil location site, Engr. Ezeonwumelu Chukwuemeka, described the plant as where the crude is processed and separated into water, gas and crude oil, adding that the crude oil is loaded into barges for onward transportation to the refinery.

A strange incident is scaring the residents of a community near the Federal Capital Territory, writes FRIDAY OLOKOR

The residents of Kubwa, a community on the outskirts of Abuja, got the shock of their lives when an unusual incident involving a businessman occurred about two weeks ago.

The businessman, Edward Asuelimen, had woken up in the morning of July 16 with severe pain in his stomach.

“I woke up a few minutes after 5 am. In less than two hours, I had visited the toilet four times. Then I felt excruciating pain in my stomach. It got to a point where I could hardly prepare my children for school,” Asuelimen recounts.

Even his wife was very worried. But he managed to pull himself together and left their home with the children.

Halfway to the children’s school, the pain became unbearable and he decided to get some drugs from a store on the way.

Yet, a few minutes later, Asuelimen barely managed to walk out of the store by gripping the walls for support.

“I prayed hard to get back home. Anybody who saw me at that point wouldn’t have believed that there was something wrong with me,” he says.

He kept praying and fighting the pain raging in his stomach until he got home. He was so weak that he could not step out of his car.

Asuelimen’s wife was alarmed at his condition. She suggested that he should seek medical attention in a hospital after he gasped and said, “Help me quickly, I can’t breathe.”

The businessman had no choice other than to listen to his wife. Eventually, he was admitted at Unity Clinic and Maternity Home, which was nearby.

At intervals, his panic-stricken wife called out his name just to be sure that he was still alive.

“I had never experienced that kind of pain before. I was merely hanging on with all my strength and faith in God. At the hospital, the medical director and his staff were already having their morning devotion.

“When my wife called the doctor and he helped me to come out of my car, the only thing I could say was, ‘my tommy, my tummy’ I was given an injection and somebody stayed with me, all the while praying as the rest continued the morning devotion.

“The Holy Spirit pushed me to speaking in tongues at that point. Not long afterwards, I felt a strong urge to vomit and I did.”

Asuelimen vomited two live lizards in the hospital. The incident however caused consternation among members of the staff of the hospital and other patients present.

“When my wife tried to get something to clean my mouth and pack it, I saw a lizard crawling out from the vomit on the ground. The nurse that attended to me saw another one and wanted to kill it,” he says.

When he saw the lizards, the first thought that struck him was that he had been poisoned. But the pain ceased after he vomited the reptiles. The doctor told him that he had just received divine healing.

“I got well almost instantly. Even I joined the hospital staff in burning the lizards. I went home had my bath and continued the day’s business as if nothing had happened to me,” he says.

The news of the event spread like wildfire. Soon Asuelimen started receiving phone calls from his friends, relatives, neighbours and associates. They congratulated him for surviving a close shave with death.

Eventually, the incident became the talk among the residents of Kubwa. Everybody seemed to be mystified and for some time, they discussed the incident in hushed tones.

The lizards are sstill the subject of debate in the community and the residents are torn between accepting the mystery and waving it aside, since they are convinced that it cannot be proved scientifically.

But Asuelimen says, “I am not a medical doctor, and I know that it cannot be proved scientifically. I know that faith is older and stronger than science. The faith we are talking about is God himself. God is the creator of the universe, so invention and science itself is dependent on God.
Politics / Buhari- Empower Police To Deal With Boko Haram by youngies(m): 7:25am On Jul 27, 2012
Presidential Candidate for the Congress for Progressive Change in the 2011 elections, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has asked the Federal Government to empower the police to deal with the Boko Haram insurgency.

Buhari spoke on the sidelines of the presentation of a book titled, ‘How I governed Anambra State: Stewardship & Accountability’ in Abuja, on Thursday.

The book was written by a former governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju.

Also at this event, an All Nigeria Peoples Party stalwart, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezife, said Nigeria and Nigerians had become unpopular because “we have killed our conscience.”

Buhari said, “The bombings have subsided. It’s up to the law enforcement agents. This is probably the problem of the police. You know, they (Police and SSS) have to secure the country. Constitutionally it’s their job

“Boko Haram as I said, I would rather that the police should be empowered.

“It’s the police that live with the people- they know in every police command- the neighborhood and so on. A lot of the responsibility I think should go to the police.”

The one time military dictator also decried the poor state of the nation’s education system.

Buhari said, “Our education has virtually collapsed. How many libraries do we have in the states not to talk about the local governments? People can’t afford to buy books.

“Education has deteriorated. If you look around the country, how many people are getting good credits in English language which is the official (language) in the country?”

Buhari commended the author for taking off time to put his experiences in writing.

He, however, disagreed with the author’s postulations that our problems lie with followership and not the leadership

Politics / Pastor Tunde Bakare Rejects SSS' Call To Moderate Sermons by youngies(m): 8:05am On Jul 24, 2012
Tunde Bakare, the pastor of Later Rain Assembly and vice presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, in the last general election has said he will not tone down his church sermons critical of the administration.

Mr Bakare was called in by the State Security Service in Shangisha, Lagos, on Monday following a sermon he delivered in his church Sunday on how to peacefully change governments.

Speaking to an online news agency PREMIUM TIMES Monday night, the activist pastor said at the SSS office, the director requested him to moderate his sermon given the huge following he enjoys nationwide.

In response, Mr Bakare, who went to the Shangisha office of the secret police Monday afternoon, flanked by his lawyer and Yinka Odumakin, a close comrade, handed the director a signed copy of his Sunday sermon, and requested him to peruse it carefully.

"I then asked him whether there was anything in the sermon that was false or misleading," the pastor said via telephone from Lagos. "I then informed him that I won't tone down my sermons."

Mr. Bakare also said he handed an invitation to the SSS directors to attend his church where more critical messages would be delievered this and next week.

"It is a three-part message I'm giving, and they are free to attend," he said.

The pastor said he had a cordial deliberation with the security agents, as all those who engaged him were civil.

"In fact, I spoke far more than they did," Mr. Bakare, a fiery critic of the Goodluck Jonathan administration, said.

Politics / State Creation: Tension Over Moves To Favour Only South East by youngies(m): 7:35am On Jul 24, 2012
Barely three days after the conclusion of its retreat, the Senate is gripped by tension over moves to create one state - from the Southeast only.

The Chairman of the Northern Senators' Forum, Senator Umaru Dahiru, yesterday said no such decision was taken at the retreat, adding that it is impossible to have new states created from one geopolitical zone alone.

After the retreat of the Senate Constitution Review Committee in Asaba, Delta State, the Senate Leader, Mr. Victor Ndoma-Egba, was quoted as saying that the Senate had agreed to have a new state from the Southeast.

Ndoma-Egba said: "At the end of the retreat, the following were suggested as key issues that needed to be tackled by the Constitution Review Committee: creation of one state for the Southeast zone for equity and fairness."

The Senate Leader's statement has ignited tension, with most Northern Senators expressing surprise.

The National Assembly received 45 memoranda requesting for the creation of states from the existing 36.

Although state creation is one of the issues before the Constitution Review Committee, there were fears that some forces were pulling the strings to restrict it to only the Southeast.

A Senator from the North said: "It must be a joke for anyone within the committee to assume that he can use influence to restrict the creation of state to only a geopolitical zone.

"The truth is that they cannot recommend a new state for the Southeast outside other geopolitical zones. Do not forget that there has been agitation for creation of states from some old provinces, like Zaria , Kabba, Oyo, Ijebu, Edu, Old Annang, Warri, Kontagora, Muri, and Ogoja."

Another high-ranking Senator said: "Let them smuggle anything they want into the constitution review, the majority will decide at the end of the day. Those behind this latest seed of hatred can have their say; they will not have their way in the chamber.

"I am surprised that an exercise that has not started has been concluded. Things are not done this way at all."

The Chairman of the Northern Senators' Forum, Senator Umaru Dahiru, said: "To the best of my knowledge, creation of new states did not come up at the retreat. It was surprising to hear that a new state for the Southeast was one of the issues suggested to the committee.

"Maybe Nigerians should ask how they arrived at that in Asaba. I am aware that there are many requests before the National Assembly, including those from the North, and the constitution review process has not even got to the level of giving any geopolitical zone a slot.

"I do not know if anyone has superior information that this Forum does not have."

A Senator from the South East said: "I doubt it if the Senate Leader will make such a commitment. But if he did in Asaba, it cannot hold water at all. We cannot accept the creation of one state from a zone alone. It is impracticable.

"I am aware of the anger of some Senators on the purported statement of Senator Ndoma-Egba but I have not lost any sleep at all because the process of creating a state is not one-off thing."

A Senator from the South East said: "The Constitutional Committee of the Sixth Senate had concurred that there should be a state from the South East. So, it is nothing new.

"I want to appeal to our colleagues not to politicise this matter at all."

A Senator from Ogun State , Alhaji Gbenga Kaka, said: "I was at the retreat throughout. They just said they received 56 requests, which they said they were going to consider.

"So, all that we have received is the proposal. It is when we get there that we will know the number of states to be created. It is not a case of one state.

"If there is any member from the Southeast who spoke, it was Senator Chris Ngige who demanded for a new state from the zone. And no one can blame Ngige for protecting the interest of his zone.

"Also, the Asagba of Asagba used the opportunity to ask for the creation of Anioma State."

Health / N5000 Antenatal Allowance For Pregnant Women by youngies(m): 7:20am On Jul 23, 2012

Politics / Aguleri, Umuleri On The Brink Of Another War by youngies(m): 12:47pm On Jul 22, 2012
THE fragile peace in the war-torn Aguleri and Umuleri communities in Anambra East Council of Anambra State is being threatened as the former joined issues with the latter over alleged land encroachment.

Umuleri had recently, through Mr. George Obukwesili, accused Aguleri of encroaching on their Aguakor land and threatened that “if the state and federal governments should close their eyes and allow this gun powder to explode, the 1995-1999crisis will be a child’s play”.

Aguleri dismissed the allegation, saying it was rather Umuleri community that had unceremoniously withdrawn from a peace committee set up by the two communities since 2004 to resolve all the land issues between them.

In a statement in Umuahia by Chief Ralph Igwa, Chairman of Aguleri Peace Committtee, he denied that there is “palpable tension between the two communities.”

Igwa said the impression “does not reflect the current situation in the area and it is inconsistent with the facts regarding the present state of the relationship between the two communities”.

He however regretted that Umuleri pulled out of the peace committee without any reason and resorted to using the police to harass Aguleri people, which, he said, was “capable of engendering renewed tension between the two erstwhile hostile communities”.

He urged Umuleri to return to the peace committee to enable the communities thrash out the disagreement between them.

“ The truth is that the two communities having failed to resolve their age-long dispute through courts, tribunals or third party mediations, took a bold peace initiative in 2004 by deciding to peacefully settle their problem by themselves. And so, in March, 2004, the two communities set up the Aguleri/Umuleri Peace Committee with mandate to determine acceptable boundaries between Aguleri and Umuleri communities”, Igwa said.

According to him, the committee worked till 2004 till 2010 “when the Umuleri representatives in the committee [allegedly] suddenly pulled out without any formal reason till date”.

Aguleri therefore accused Umuleri of aborting the peace process and called on them to return to the committee to discuss any matter that may be threatening the peace of the communities, even as they warned the police not to allow themselves to be misused by Umuleri.

Crime / Man, 53, Hacked To Death Over Plan To Remarry by youngies(m): 8:40am On Jul 21, 2012
For daring to add another wife in defiance to his wife’s resistance, Mallam Yusuf Ibrahim, 53, of Shaiskawa quarters in Katsina metropolis met his untimely death. He was allegedly murdered by assassins hired by his 27-year-old wife, Zainab.

It was gathered that the late Ibrahim had concluded arrangements to marry his late elder brother’s wife as directed by his aged mother, but Zainab vehemently opposed the marriage.

It was further gathered that when Zainab tried all she could to prevent her deceased husband from adding another wife, she allegedly contracted two middle-aged men, Jamilu and Mustapha to murder him.

Sources told our correspondent that Jamilu and Mustapha, who were given an undisclosed sum of money to carry out the act, allegedly used Zainab’s mobile phone to call the late Ibrahim and asked him to meet them at Filin Samji, where he was hacked to death.

A resident of Shaisakawa quarters, who spoke to our correspondent under the condition of anonymity, said that Zainab had threatened to do all she could to prevent her late husband from marrying a second wife, and had openly boasted that as long as she lives, the man would not marry a second wife.

Deputy spokesman of the Katsina State police command, ASP Shehu Koko, who confirmed the incident to journalists yesterday, said the command had arrested both Zainab and her accomplice in crime, who are now helping the police in their investigation at the state criminal investigation department.

Politics / Police Quiz Ekiti Oba Over Death Of 70-yr-old Woman by youngies(m): 7:24am On Jul 20, 2012
The Police in Ekiti State have summoned a first class traditional ruler in Ekiti over his alleged role in the murder of 70-year-old woman, Mrs. Rebecca Adewunmi for allegedly possessing witchcraft power. The command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Victor Babayemi disclosed this yesterday in a telephone interview with the journalists in Ado-Ekiti.

Last week, the state government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs condemned the killing and ordered the police to prosecute all those behind the wicked act. The PPRO, however, made it clear that the command neither arrested nor detained the monarch in connection with the alleged murder.

He said: “He was invited yesterday (Wednesday). He came with some people. But mind you, we did not arrest him. We had discussions and we are working on the discussions.” He added that autopsy had been conducted by experts at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) on Wednesday, to ascertain the cause of Adewunmi’s death.

The PPRO noted that the report of the autopsy would be out soon, which he said would inform the next line of action. The late Mrs. Adewunmi was allegedly killed on June 30, 2012 by some youths alleged to have been organised by those who wanted her dead over alleged confession by a lady that she was a member of a witches coven and that she used her witchcraft power to afflict his step son, Ola Adewunmi with a strange sickness.

The deceased, according to members of his family was allegedly tortured to death by a group of youths called Omekula, whom, they alleged were carrying out the instruction of some top traditional chiefs in the town.

Sequel to the alarm raised by Adewunmi’s family that those mentioned in the killing had not been arrested, the state government immediately swung into action and directed the immediate arrest and trial of those allegedly invovled.

Politics / Sanusi Indicted Of Fraud & Forgery Over Bank Nationalization by youngies(m): 12:05pm On Jul 19, 2012
A House of Representatives report on the near collapse of the capital market says it has found evidence of forgery and fraudulent misrepresentation involving the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, and other top industry officials in the controversial nationalization of three commercial banks.

The report submitted to the House on Tuesday, says the nationalization of Afribank Plc, Spring Bank and Bank PHB, violated statutory provisions and remained a "major source" of investors' loss of confidence in the troubled Nigerian capital market.

The document 81-page document provides, perhaps, the most indicting position on the sale of the three banks by the CBN last year, a move that has fetched the regulatory bank under Mr. Sanusi, intense criticisms and accusation of bias.

"This committee is of the view that due process was not followed, and that investors interests were not considered in nationalizing the banks," the House capital market committee, headed by Ibrahim El-Sudi, stated.

"Public officers charged with the responsibility of protecting investors and depositors did not act in good faith, and there were evidence to suggest fraud, misrepresentations, and forgeries."

Those cited to have been involved in the irregularities are the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation, Umaru Ibrahim, Managing Director, Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON), Mustafa Chike-Obi, the CBN governor, Mr. Sanusi, the Registrar of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Belo Mahmud, and the Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Arunma Oteh.

The committee faulted Mr. Sanusi for a range of several other anomalies and breach of procedures, and accused the CBN boss of deliberately withholding information from the lawmakers during the investigation.

It also indicted Ms. Oteh of multiple cases of irregularities, and accused the SEC DG of fraudulent conduct.

Ms. Oteh was recalled by the federal government on Wednesday after about a month on suspension. Her recall came as the House committee tabled its report.

On the nationalization of Afribank, the committee detailed shocking highlights of the behind-the-scenes leading to the change. The committee said the bank's name was changed to Mainstreet Bank Limited, a private company with share capital of 100,000 ordinary shares of N1 each, owned by two persons, Gideon Agbedo, a lawyer, and a certain Innocent Obi.

The committee said it found out the Articles and Memorandum of Association transferring the ownership to the individuals, was stamped and verified by the CAC authorizing them to "assume all or part only of the deposits and liabilities of Afribank" and to "purchase such assets of Afribank" as are acceptable to the board.

This meant a publicly quoted company was acquired by a private company owned by two persons, the committee said.

Further, a Certificate of Incorporation no RC 969929 dated 5th August, 2011, signed by Bello Mahmud, Registrar General-CAC , certified that Mainstreet Bank was previously called 'SHOKO CHUKIN LIMITED'.

"This action is completely false and dubious," the committee said.

Politics / Court Fines NBC N60m For Selling Contaminated Drink by youngies(m): 8:22am On Jul 19, 2012
A High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has slammed N6 million against the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) as special and general damages to Messrs Keregbe Kpa and Nuka Livingstone. The company was to pay the amount to Kpa and Livingstone, as special and general damages caused them by the company after consuming contaminated drinks.

The claimants had through their counsel, Chigozirim Nwaodu, instituted a suit against the defendant on March 27, 2009, claiming the sum of N100 million as special and general damages. Justice Emmanuel Ogbuji, while delivering the judgment, found the defendant in Suit No.PHC/551/2009, guilty of negligence and breached its duty of care to the claimants.

The judge upheld that the NBC was negligent when it manufactured and sold to the first claimant, Keregbe Kpa, soft drinks contaminated with decomposing cockroach and other harmful substances on or about May 17, 2008. Ogbuji stated further that it was an absurd that the NBC’s Quality Assurance Manager, Mrs. Comfort Okere, who claimed the company had the state-of-the-art equipment could not tell the court how many bottles were washed daily and why their product was contaminated.

“I must state and agree with the claimants’ counsel that whatever may be the case, by the doctrine of res ipsa loquitor, the defendant has the obligation to explain how their products, which vessels underwent a state-of-the-art cleaning processes, acquired foreign objects or particles, that rendered them unsafe for human consumption.

“In fact, it is absurd that the defendant produces many bottles a day, but its witness stated that she did not know how many bottles are washed daily. In her testimony, she said their Port Harcourt plant produces 30,000 crates (720,000 bottles) of soft drinks a day, but did not know how many bottles the defendant wash a day.” While declining to grant relief of N23 million to the claimants, the judge upheld that they proved their case on preponderance of evidence.

“Wherefore, it is ordered and declared that the defendant was negligent and breached its duty of care to the claimants when it manufactured and caused to be sold to the first claimant soft drinks contaminated with decomposing cockroach and other harmful substances on or about May 17, 2008.

“The discovery of the said contamination by the guests of the first claimant in a child dedication ceremony he organized for his little daughter on May 18, 2008 and for which the first claimant was derogatorily called ‘an evil or blood money man, money ritualist’ and a similar plasters of infamy by the guests and other persons amounted to the defamation of the claimant or an aggravated embarrassment to him.”

Health / How Sickle Cell Anaemia Patient Ndik Mattew Had His Blood Changed From SS To AA by youngies(m): 7:31am On Jul 18, 2012
When he passed out of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital clutching MBBS (Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Medicine) in 1993, Dr. Bazuaye Godwin Nosakhare did not know he would be heading back to the school to help groom other doctors. He also had no inkling that 17 years down the line, he would lead a team to put the institution on the global medical map.

Inside the aircraft on a long flight to Switzerland in 2009, four members of staff of the teaching hospital comprising two nurses, one staff in the haematology department, and Bazuaye began the journey to history. At Basel, in Switzerland, they had an intensive one-year training in stem cell transplant, a relatively new branch of medicine that provides total cure for sickle cell patients, leukemia and other blood-related disorders.

When their trainers certified them fit, Dr. Bazuaye, Mrs. Imafidon Rose (pediatric nurse) Mrs. Ogunlere Beatrice (adult nurse) and Mr. Eguae Osaretin of the haematology unit returned to Benin to begin a process that makes the hospital wave the flag as a pioneer in bone marrow transplant in West Africa, coming behind Egypt and South Africa.

Something new? Dr. Bazuaye would not be drawn into any controversy given claims by some people who say they ‘have been working on it since 2001’. ‘‘I would rather not involve myself in any claims. I can tell you that we have successfully carried out bone narrow transplant here and the patient is alive and well. The World Health Organisation recognises it and verification teams from the Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Health were here. Even the minister was here. We are not in any controversy. If anyone says he has done any such transplant, it will be nice to see the patient and see how well the patient is doing,” he says, preferring to discuss the job.

Ndik Mattew was five when his distraught parents brought him to University of Benin Teaching Hospital. He was a sickle cell patient who regularly fell ill. He was ‘problematic’ as described by the team that did the bone marrow transplant on him. He reportedly could not stand on account of stroke and paralysis. He was the shadow of a healthy when he was brought the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

Changing from SS to AA Shortly after the trainees returned from Switzerland Ndik became their first test. ‘It was a tough and rigorous process’ said Egua Osaretin of the hematology department who carried out countless blood tests on the patient and his elder brother whose blood came to his younger brother’s rescue. The donor was admitted for weeks so that his blood can be certified fit for his brother through radiotherapy.

The process took the hematologist to Lagos endlessly given that the equipment in UBTH had not been certified at that time. When this reporter visited recently the equipment been certified. That will further simplify the process should the hospital undertake another transplant. After series of verification and a close watch that saw Dr Godwin Bazuaye living in the hospital premises for weeks, the bone marrow transplant tool place on September 28, 2011.

Crime / Man Stones Girlfriend To Death In Calabar by youngies(m): 12:11pm On Jul 16, 2012
A young man, Mr. Lawrence Ette, has been accused of stoning his 23-year-old girlfriend, Miss Rosaline Christopher, to death.

The tragedy was said to have occurred penultimate Sunday at 13, Academy Street, Calabar, Cross River State.

An eyewitness, who is the landlady of the deceased, Miss Dorothy Bassey, said Rosaline had a brawl with her boyfriend, before he allegedly killed her.

Bassey said Rosaline, who lived with her aged mother and siblings, had been in a relationship with Ette for a while.

She said because of the frosty relationship between the lovers in recent time, Rosaline’s mother stopped Ette from visiting her daughter.

“But even with the instruction from the old woman, Ette kept sneaking in to see the girl particularly at night,” she added.

It was learnt that during one of such visits penultimate Sunday, there was a misunderstanding between the lovers, which prompted the girl to ask Ette to leave.

Bassey said, “Rosaline did not know that Ette took her phone away. After some time, her younger sister, Nne, wanted to use the phone only for her to find out that the phone was missing.

“That was when she discovered that Ette had gone with the phone. Nne decided to go and look for Ette so that she can get her sister’s phone.

“But while Nne took the main exit and headed for Target Street, Ette sneaked into the house through the back door from Webber Street and Nne missed him.”

It was gathered that when Ette returned to the house, an argument ensued between the lovers resulting in a fight.

“She did not scream while they were struggling because she wanted to send him away quietly without attracting her mother’s attention but that was her mistake as Ette stepped out of the room, got a stone and hit her with it,” the landlady said.

She said when he realised that the girl was dead; Ette allegedly attempted to dispose of the body by throwing it over the fence.

Bassey said, “He carried her on his shoulder towards the backyard and was trying to throw the body over the fence. When the girl’s mother heard a strange noise at the backyard, she asked Nne to find out what it was.

“But when Nne got to the backyard, she saw Ette carrying her sister on his shoulder. Immediately he sensed that he had been sighted, he abandoned the corpse and fled.

“Since it was dark, a neighbour brought out a torch and during a search, Rosaline’s corpse was found inside the gutter.” Punch Metro learnt that her corpse had been to the mortuary at the General Hospital, Calabar

One of Ette’s neighbours at 10, Anating Street, Calabar, who craved anonymity, said the suspect “hurriedly came here and packed some clothes into a bag and left and has since not been seen.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. John Umoh, said the matter which was reported at Atakpa Police Station was being handled by the homicide unit of the police.

“It will not be long before we get him, the advisable thing for him to do is to come out of hiding now,” the PPRO said.
