A young man, Mr. Lawrence Ette, has been accused of stoning his 23-year-old girlfriend, Miss Rosaline Christopher, to death.

The tragedy was said to have occurred penultimate Sunday at 13, Academy Street, Calabar, Cross River State.

An eyewitness, who is the landlady of the deceased, Miss Dorothy Bassey, said Rosaline had a brawl with her boyfriend, before he allegedly killed her.

Bassey said Rosaline, who lived with her aged mother and siblings, had been in a relationship with Ette for a while.

She said because of the frosty relationship between the lovers in recent time, Rosaline’s mother stopped Ette from visiting her daughter.

“But even with the instruction from the old woman, Ette kept sneaking in to see the girl particularly at night,” she added.

It was learnt that during one of such visits penultimate Sunday, there was a misunderstanding between the lovers, which prompted the girl to ask Ette to leave.

Bassey said, “Rosaline did not know that Ette took her phone away. After some time, her younger sister, Nne, wanted to use the phone only for her to find out that the phone was missing.

“That was when she discovered that Ette had gone with the phone. Nne decided to go and look for Ette so that she can get her sister’s phone.

“But while Nne took the main exit and headed for Target Street, Ette sneaked into the house through the back door from Webber Street and Nne missed him.”

It was gathered that when Ette returned to the house, an argument ensued between the lovers resulting in a fight.

“She did not scream while they were struggling because she wanted to send him away quietly without attracting her mother’s attention but that was her mistake as Ette stepped out of the room, got a stone and hit her with it,” the landlady said.

She said when he realised that the girl was dead; Ette allegedly attempted to dispose of the body by throwing it over the fence.

Bassey said, “He carried her on his shoulder towards the backyard and was trying to throw the body over the fence. When the girl’s mother heard a strange noise at the backyard, she asked Nne to find out what it was.

“But when Nne got to the backyard, she saw Ette carrying her sister on his shoulder. Immediately he sensed that he had been sighted, he abandoned the corpse and fled.

“Since it was dark, a neighbour brought out a torch and during a search, Rosaline’s corpse was found inside the gutter.” Punch Metro learnt that her corpse had been to the mortuary at the General Hospital, Calabar

One of Ette’s neighbours at 10, Anating Street, Calabar, who craved anonymity, said the suspect “hurriedly came here and packed some clothes into a bag and left and has since not been seen.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. John Umoh, said the matter which was reported at Atakpa Police Station was being handled by the homicide unit of the police.

“It will not be long before we get him, the advisable thing for him to do is to come out of hiding now,” the PPRO said.

The inhabitants of Karkuruk,Kuzen, Ruk, Kogoduk, Dogo and Ngyo were living their normal live: farming, rearing animals, going to school and worshiping their creator. That was how normal they were, happy and contented, until on Friday, July 7, 2012, when their homes were destroyed, leaving them homeless till today.

Their sorry state can be noticed when you approach the COCIN Church, LCC Kworos Gangare in Barkin Ladi town. The sight of children, leaders of tomorrow, who should be in their various schools, playing around the church premises, spoke more of the neglect the these people are currently going through.

Not too pleased with the situation, Rev’d Bulus Dung said the displaced victims of the village “have no home and cannot take care of themselves.” The man of God, who was moved by the plight of the people, added that “the norm of the scripture teaches love, sympathy and kindness.”

He gave LEADERSHIP SUNDAY a graphic picture of how the people can to be inmates in his church. “We were here, when all of a sudden, we saw a crowd coming from Gashish district that had been displaced. When they came, we had no option than to receive them and accommodate them in the church.”

Explaining further, he added that “the church was built newly. You can even see the project is ongoing. We have no accommodation, but we just allowed them into the church.

There are about 175 people. We have sympathy for them, as we are worried about their safety. They need mattress and blanket, and I was about telling the people in the town to bring them mattresses when suddenly the Commissioner for Environment, Serah Yusuf, brought some mattresses.”

The reverend said what was brought were shared to the people, while thanking the council chairman for his immense assistance, and some individuals, like the late Gyang Fulani, who came immediately after the incident and offered some amount of money for the displaced people to buy food and soap for their uses.

He added that the communities in the town also came with food items, saying that is how the people have been surviving since they came from Gashish to the area.

Rev. Dung added further that they got some food items from the council and the COCIN Church in Kwol. “The church’s women fellowship also cook food for the people to eat. That is how we have been managing our life since the incident happen,” he said.

According to Dung, there are a lot of children, and old men and women sleeping in the church. He added that so far, they have not got any assistance from the Federal Government.

Mr. Andrew Mashash, a member of Kpwabiduk Village, whose parents are still missing, said: “It is sad that people we know, among many others, led the killings. These are youths we grew up together with. They always pass through this village to go to town, but they brought people to kill our people.

We saw them and were able to recognise them. They chased us to the bridge, but my parents who were too old could not make it to the bridge. Since we have not seen them after the incident, today being the ninth day, we believe they could be dead. It is painful that we have not seen their bodies.’’

The Village Head of Ningwong (Kpwabiduk), Gashish District of Barkin Ladi Council Area, Da Maiuchibi Mafulal, said eight members of his family were killed during the attack, while appealing to both the state and the Federal Government to safeguard their lives as they have no place to run to.

According to Da Thomas John, the village head of Kachin Ward, Gashish District, the Federal Government should assist them with enough security personnel to protect them, while enabling them to do their farming.

He also lamented that their children have not been going to school since the incident occurred. The development, he said, was not good for the children, who are leaders of tomorrow.

A spokesman for the Fulani say his people might disregard the STF's order to relocate from their homes

There is a fresh tension in some recently attacked villages in Plateau State after the Special Task Force (STF), charged with maintaining peace in Plateau, gave inhabitants of some crisis-prone villages 48 hours to vacate their communities.

In a statement, STF spokesman, Salisu Mustapha, said that a "military operation" is going on in the affected areas located in Barkin-Ladi and Riyom Local Governments.

"The inhabitants of the affected areas are to vacate immediately with their property," the statement stated.

The affected villages include - Mahanga, Kakuruk, Maseh and Shong 2.

The statement did not say where the inhabitants of the villages should head to, and whether they would be resettled.

A resident of one of the villages said it was unfair and uncharitable for the STF to order them out of their ancestral villages without providing alternatives.

"We know no other home," he said. "Where do they want us to go? Why must they treat us as if we are foreigners in our own country."

The villager indicated that he and his kinsmen might disregard the STF's order "since we have no were to go".

The STF however, advised residents of neighbouring settlements such as KuraFalls, Kuzuk, Sharuk, Rim of Gashish Districts not to panic.

"Residents of such areas should just be very careful of their movement within the area and avoid places of military operation until further notice," the STF said.

The task force also advised people to report any suspicious movement or activities in their areas.

The military operation may have resulted from the incessant attacks by gunmen on some communities in the areas.

The biggest problem facing the Igbo is so subtle. We got a glimpse of it penultimate week when some traders at Balogun market demonstrated against the Chinese who have come into Nigeria to do business.

The Balogun market branch Dealers of Bags and Leather Wears Association of Nigeria had a protest march against some Chinese business men. They accused the Chinese men of retailing leather products at a very cheap rate, thereby forcing these traders to operate at a loss. The traders said it was a systematic plan to undermine and kill off their business in Nigeria.

These traders said that they have been facing this problem for over five years now- that was when the Chinese came. They wanted the Chinese to remember that the reason the Federal Government allowed them to operate in Nigeria was to build industries that would create employment. These protesting traders called for dialogue with the Chinese with the hope that afterwards the Chinese would go back home and bring machines to set up industries.

One after the other they lined up and spoke to the press, begging the government to come to their aid. They said if the activities of the Chinese were not checked, thousands of them would lose their source of livelihood. If you read their statements you would be sorry for them. These men were shedding tears over the Chinese. They did not know that Walmart is on its way.

According to the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Walmart is on its way to Nigeria. This news was also confirmed by the Nigerian ambassador to the United States who told Empowered Newswire that Walmart plans to open two stores in Nigeria. Walmart came into Africa when it bought a controlling share in South Africas Massmart Holdings Ltd.

Already Africas largest grocer, South African Shoprite, is in Nigeria and other big retail stores like Pepkor Ltd are making plans to come. According to Pepkor Ltd CEO, the clothing company plans to ride on the coat tails of Shoprite. So the Igbo traders shedding tears over the Chinese have not seen anything yet.

Currently, these stores appear to target high-income earners in big cities. But over time, they would default to serving low-income earners everywhere in Nigeria. Pepkor, for instance, plans to open up to 50 stores in Nigeria. And that is when these traders will shed more than tears.

Of course, people like the CEO of Pepkor, Mr. Wiese are saying, theres enough for everybody. Its a growing market. And I bet you, if you get the Chinese business men to speak to the media, they would say the same thing.

The real truth is that the Igbo business model of opening stores in markets across city centers is coming to an end. In a generation or two, there wont be anything like that anymore. It would all go the way Mom and Pop stores disappeared in American cities where Walmart and Targets set up shop.

The Igbo business model is simple. At the top is an importer. His job is to import items from overseas and have a chain of wholesalers move the goods across Nigeria. The wholesalers on their own have a chain of retailers who buy from them and sell at markets across Nigeria. In one swoop, the Chinese and Walmart will replace all the Igbo traders on this chain from importers to retailers.

The question now is what will the Igbo do before Balogun, Ojo Alaba International, Ochanja, Ogbete, and other markets across Nigeria are turned into Malls, theaters and football fields? With millions of Igbo men and women who engage in retail business across Africa, what happens after the Walmarts of this world have settled in? What happens when regular Nigerians have become accustomed to walking into air-conditioned stores; looking up marked prices, paying for what they can afford and returning items they do not want seven days after they purchased it?

I trust that the Igbo will not fold their arms and go on the street to beg. I believe they will find something else to do. But it will be good if they begin to strategize now. It will be great if a ten-year and twenty-year plans for transition are put in place. I believe that a plan to transition into manufacturing, turning Aba and Nnewi and Nkpor into manufacturing hubs will greatly keep the Igbo in play as the Chinese and Walmart take their places in Africa.

The last war took the Igbo by surprise. They fought gallantly and lost. The debriefing has not been done. As a result, the aftermath of that war is still ravaging the Igbo society. This new war, already in progress, should not take the Igbo by surprise.

The first lady, Patience Jonathan, will not relocate to Bayelsa State to perform the duties of permanent secretary and will not earn any pay during the period.

Her spokesman, Mr Ayo Osinlu, stated this yesterday during an interview with an online medium, PREMIUM TIMES.

Governor Seriake Dickson had on Wednesday appointed the wife of President Goodluck Jonathan as a permanent secretary in the Bayelsa State civil service alongside 17 other senior civil servants in the state.

But Osinlu claims that, unlike the others appointees, the first lady will hold her office in absentia.

“She is on leave of absence. She is not going to function in the office of the permanent secretary in Bayelsa State. It is a civil service position. She is a staff of the Bayelsa State civil service. But she will also not collect any perk for the office. It will be illegal for her to draw salary from the office,” he said.

According to Osinlu, the first lady is apparently delighted at the appointment, saying that she had no cause to publicly accept or decline the appointment.

The president’s wife, who left the Bayelsa State civil service 13 years ago after her husband became the deputy governor of the state, was elevated to the position usually reserved for senior civil servants.

Governor Dickson had claimed that he made the appointment in line with the constitutional powers conferred on his office.

Togo's prime minister and government have resigned, according to a statement on national television and radio, but no reason was given for their stepping down.

A statement issued late on Wednesday said that President Faure Gnassingbe had accepted Prime Minister Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo's resignation but the former United Nations diplomat would temporarily continue to run daily business.

No official reason was given for the resignation and close aides to Houngbo did not comment.

Houngbo was virtually unknown on the Togolese political scene when he was named prime minister in 2008. He was kept in the post following Gnassingbe's re-election in May 2010.

A Dutch creationist is putting finishing touches onto a full-size replica of Noah’s Ark, which he has built according to a blueprint set out in the Bible.

Johan Huibers spent three years on the construction and more than £1.03million building the gigantic wooden boat – and now has his sights set on sailing it up the Thames for the Olympics.

This feat of true biblical proportions was inspired by a dream Mr Huibers had 20 years ago, in which he saw part of his native Netherlands submerged in a flood like the one featured in the Book of Genesis.

He has been obsessed with bringing the story of the ark to life ever since, MSNBC reports, and in 2004 he built a half-scale version and floated it along the country’s canals.

Tourists flocked to see the smaller prototype when Mr Huibers opened it to the public, but the proceeds from admissions went straight back into funding his ambition to build a full-size ship

The narrative of the ark, in which God commanded Noah to prepare for a great flood sent to purge the world of evil, specifies that the boat was 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits high.

Mr Huibers converted this ancient unit of measurement, which is based on the length of the forearm, to come about a meaurment of 450ft long.

This puts the boat, which opens to the public on Monday at more than half the length of the Titanic and it has been nicknamed ‘Johan’s Ark’, .

Though it may not be able to shelter two of every animal, as the original story dictates, it can hold 1,500 people – not to mention a menagerie of life-size plastic creatures including giraffes, elephants and donkeys, as well as a few live chickens.

As it weighs in at almost 3,000 tons and is made from Swedish pine reinforced with steel, it may be hard to believe that the ark is, in fact, seaworthy.

It is docked in the western city of Dordrecht, where Mr Huibers, the owner of a construction company, pieced it together with the help of some friends and two of his children.

In the 15th century, the city was the site of one of the deadliest floods in history, named St Elizabeth’s flood, which is thought to have claimed as many as 10,000 lives.

Aramoko-Ekiti in the Ekiti West Local Government Area, Ekiti State was a theatre of disaster Thursday morning when a mother of four was beheaded on the farm in the town.

Mrs. Bose Edijana Lucky was discovered murdered on the footpath which leads to the farm of her husband, Mr. Nnaefenwa Lucky, around 9:3am.

The incident was believed to have happened when the woman was taking food to her husband who was working on the farm.

Chief Samuel Okorefe, the chairman, Urhobo Community in Aramoko-Ekiti, told newsmen at his residence at the Amututu area of the town that he was contacted on the phone that a serious incident had happened which forced him to come home.

He explained that the victim was said to have gone to the market in the morning to buy condiments to prepare soup and after she had cooked food, she headed for her husband's farm to give him food.

Shortly after Bose had gone to the farm, her husband was said to have come to town calling for help, informing other Urhobo natives that his wife had been beheaded by some unknown people suspected to be ritualists.

The community leader with other elders went directly to the palace of Alara of Aramoko, Oba Olu Adeyemi, and reported the matter.

They informed the police and a team of policemen drove to the scene of the incident and removed the remains of the victim.

The cops were shocked to discover that the head, neck and arms had been cut off.

The husband was taken to the police station where he made a statement.

IBADAN – It was a big shock, yesterday, at the palace of Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Samuel Odulana, when the most- dreaded masquerade, Oloolu, and its entourage besieged the monarch with injuries allegedly sustained in a fracas between them and men of the state security outfit, Operation Burst.

The melee, which started Tuesday, worsened, yesterday, leading to the arrest of no fewer than 20 followers of the masquerade.

The masquerade which dismissed reports that it had been killed, complained bitterly about ”unprovoked attack” by some Islamic scholars.

How Oloolu was unmasked

Some parts of Ibadan city were embroiled in crisis when some muslims who were observing the eighth day fidau prayer of a colleague, at Popoyemoja, advised the masquerade and its supporters not to come to the area because there were women there who the masquerade should not see, according to their belief.

But the masquerade and its adherents allegedly ignored the warning.

The trouble, which later spread to Idi-Arere and Beere, among others places on Wednesday night, generated much tension in the affected areas.

The leader of the Oloolu family, Chief Ojetunde Asoleke, who led the team to the Olubadan Palace, appealed to the monarch to prevail on the police and the personnel of Operation Burst to release 20 of their men arrested.

He claimed that the mask of Oloolu was seized and later released to them.

He said: “We feel saddened by the report that our man was killed as this was farther from the truth. No doubt, he was badly wounded as you can all see (showing the wounds sustained by the Oloolu on his arm and head), but was not killed.

”The costume seized by the men of Operation Burst has been retrieved and the festival would resume in earnest.”

They threatened to come out today, but were prevailed upon that it negated the normal tradition.

European football's governing body UEFA has sparked outrage after it emerged that they manipulated footage of fans during the Euro 2012 semi-finals.

People across the world were touched when cameras zoomed in on a German fan in the crowd crying after Mario Balotelli put Italy two goals ahead in the first half of their match last week.

ESPN commentator Adrian Healey even referred to the woman as he covered the game for American TV, saying it was "too early for tears" since there was the best part of an hour left in which the sparky Germans could fight their way back into the match.

There was just one problem: the woman - a fan from Dusseldorf called Andrea - hadn't started crying at all, and was stunned to receive text messages from friends back home asking why she was blubbing with so much football left to play.

It turns out that Andrea had actually been overcome by emotion during the singing of the German national anthem before the match. The footage was recorded, then cut into the live feed sent to broadcasters around the world after the Italians went 2-0 up.

It turns out that it was not the only instance of UEFA pulling such a stunt: they also broadcast footage of Germany coach Joachim Loew jokingly pinching a ball from a ball boy during the group stage match against the Netherlands. It turned out that Loew wasn't relaxed and having fun during a key match against arch-rivals, but merely joshing with him during the pre-match warm-up.

Broadcasters claim to have been oblivious to what was going on, with German TV stations in particular furious with the way the pictures had been manipulated.

"We clearly told UEFA that the German public expects coverage to be live when it says it's live. Live is live and has to stay live," said ARD's Joerg Schoenenborn. "Any form of censorship or manipulation is not acceptable."

UEFA later issued a statement to the Associated Press in which, like a surly teenager, it mixed an unconvincing explanation with a half-hearted apology. The organisation claims it was trying to show "the human story of the game... to translate the emotion and tension of German fans", but had now issued instructions "not to use these reactions again directly in a chain of replays of live action, to avoid any misleading understanding".

The embattled House of Representatives Lawmaker, Hon. Farouk Lawan has raised nine questions for Oil Magnate, Femi Otedola on the released audio tape second part on the alleged $620,000 bribery allegation leveled against him.

The lawmaker said his friends and associates could not identify his voice in the audio when listening to the alleged conversation.

In a statement released and signed by his lawyer,Chief Mike Ozekhome, he charged Otedola to give answers to the nine questions over the second part of the audio tape.

The statement added: “The questions that agitate an unbiased mind from this unfolding piece of poorly scripted home comedy are:

•Why is this audio recording being played in bits and pieces, rather than enbloc and wholly?

•How come that an audio recording which ought to be played on Radio for a listening public is being aired on television for a viewing public, when no visual is involved how so ever?

•Where is the visual recording of the alleged bribe?

•How come a supposed part of the same conversation portray Lawan as a talkative, belligerent and unyielding character who barely allowed Mr Otedola to utter one word, while the first part supposedly shows him as a sluggish, tentative, stammering, and measured speaker, speaking only when prompted on by the same Otedola?

•If Lawan says it was left for the Committee to know what to do to help out, why will Otedola pay bribe to influence an issue Lawan had already concluded that his committee would know what to do about?

•If Lawan did actually warn Otedola not to tell other Oil Marketers so that the impression is not given that his Committee has been compromised as the audio tend to show, does this not in fact show, assuming the story were correct, that Lawan was actually saying to Otedola, “you know we have not been compromised”?

•Why has it taken Mr Otedola this long to make public his so, called “sting operation” well over two months after Lawan had notified the Police when he interacted with them in May, 2012?

•How come that neither Mr Lawan nor Mr Emenalo was arrested or swooped upon in a so called “sting operation” where money allegedly changed hands on four different occasions?

•What is the source of this audio tape that is being played installmentally and which ought ordinarily to emanate from Security Agencies, if indeed it was a “sting operation” by the SSS?
