Politics › NGF Crisis: How Amaechi Defeated Jang, By Oshiomhole by Youngzedd(op): 7:47am On Jun 21, 2013 |
GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State yesterday in Abuja narrated how Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State defeated Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State in the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, election.
Oshiomhole, who spoke at the 9th triennial delegates conference of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, warned that the crisis in the NGF was not about the forum, but about democracy in Nigeria, especially in 2015.
He lamented that if governors could dispute an election where only 35 persons voted, how would they ensure free and fair election in 2015?
The Edo State Governor, who berated labour for not taking decisive action on the crisis, called on unions to get more involved in the country’s governance, saying time to remain non-partisan was gone if Nigerian must get the benefits of democracy.
Oshiomhole said: “I read the communiqué of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and I was not satisfied with its statement on the NGF election. An election was held, one won and one lost.
https://dvsl3w2q45hb8.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/jang-amaechi1.jpg
“NLC cannot be appealing to both parties to behave, it should appeal to the one that lost to behave and accept defeat. What are we going to be remembered for? That we were silent when everybody was going crazy?
‘They were preachers’
“35 people went into a room and they were saying let us be reasonable, the world is watching us. One by one they were sermonised like very seasoned pentecostal pastors.
“We had some who said we must do open ballot. I said how can you do open ballot when you are already fighting before the ballot. Let us do secret ballot because we are products of secret ballots. Why are we now afraid to do it?
“There should be one governor, one vote. Then, 35 now voted and my twin brother from Delta State became the agent of the two candidates and he stood by the Director-General, who was unanimously appointed a month earlier.
“Votes counting,
executive madness”
“They counted 35 papers. So one by one in the open and in an open secret ballot we voted, and counted the votes. They were 35, representing the 35 state governors present. When they were counting, Jang, Jang, Jang, the Niger State Governor said ‘Jang in early lead’.
“After then, they started counting Amaechi, Amaechi, Amaechi and in the end, the votes were out. Jang got 16 votes and Amaechi got 19 votes. However, immediately, the very people that voted said no, no, no, we are going to walk out.
“I said, how can you walk out? Even in madness, there are levels. Unfortunately, people who call themselves Christians and Muslims, who insist they are executive governors, were demonstrating executive madness.
“All this is just sycophancy when the facts are so clear. Comrade presidents of NLC and TUC, you cannot be quiet. You must take a position. From all you have heard and seen thereafter, if Jang won, say so and if he did not win tell him to stop parading himself and behave.
“That is the truth. If you choose to live the life of a liar, you cannot live longer but the difference is even in death. Those who speak the truth, there is a place reserved in heaven for them.
“But those who choose to tell lies, there is also a place in hell that is reserved for them. This matter is serious.
It’s about democracy
It is not about NGF; it is about democracy. I need you to know the implication if you do not already know.
“If we can dispute or contest whether 16 is majority instead of 19 in a small election, can we expect 2015 election to be free and fair? Do we need to get there before we see it?
“The time to fight is now. It is about you, not them. How could you say that votes were cast, that people signed a document in April for an election that was to take place at the end of May? And that the person that won in April is valid and not the person that won in May.
On economy
Oshiomhole added: “I need you to engage in specifics about the economy. You must revisit our industrial policies, emphasise production and not importation. I think we need to emphasise that Nigeria must return to production.
“We must not only make the refineries to work, we must build new ones so that more people can be employed. If we resolve that we can stop importation today. Where will our young engineers work if we are exporting jobs and importing unemployment, exporting prosperity and importing poverty?
“The economy is not about statistics. It is about real human beings and their well-being. So, I ask you, the labour movement: let us engage them.”
Jonathan reacts
Speaking, President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, said the NGF was a voluntary association registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission and that he had never and would never interfere in its affairs.
He, however, called for the support of labour in his efforts to transform the nation, recalling some of the achievements his administration had achieved since two years of assuming office.
He called on labour and all lovers of democracy in the country to appeal to Governor Jang to accept defeat in the interest of free and fair elections in 2015.

Crime › Ex-Policeman Trailed Over Attempt To Murder Wife by Youngzedd(op): 7:39am On Jun 21, 2013 |
AKURE— POLICE in Ondo State are on the trail of an ex-police officer, Tajudeen Adeniyi, over an attempt to kill his wife, Moyosola, by macheting her, inflicting a 10-centimetre deep gash on her head.
The 38-year-old suspect took to his heels immediately he inflicted the injury on his wife who has had four children for him.
Adeniyi, according to investigation, has gone underground following the hint he got that the family of the wife had reported the incident to the Police.
Consequently, the Police have combed the houses of his friends and family members to no avail.
Narrating her ordeal to newsmen on her hospital bed, yesterday, Moyosola said her husband abandoned the house for another woman since November 2012.
She alleged that her husband invaded her apartment at Plaza area of Akure at about 11 p.m on Wednesday and attacked her.
According to her, the husband forced the door of the room open with the use of the mortar and attacked her with cutlass, bottle and club.
She also alleged that her husband who was accompanied by two other men inflicted several machete cuts on her head and neck, making her to lose several pints of blood.
Moyosola explained that after the husband abandoned her she took their four children to their hometown in Ogotun-Ekiti.
The doctor taking care of injured Moyosola, Dr. Matthew Adeyeri, told newsmen that she had about 12 centimetres cut on her head. He noted that it was sheer providence that she survived the attack.
According to him, “if the cut inflicted on the woman’s neck had been as deep as the one on her head, she would have died before getting to the hospital.
The state’s Police image maker, Wole Ogodo, said men of the command were on the trail of the suspect for attempted murder.

Nightshift: I'm disappointed by Uba's support for the car gifts from Gov Obi. He even suggested that the chiefs should have been given two vehicles each. It's a pity that tax payers money has been used to settle those modern ' Pimps' in Igboland. No mind them, if actually the Governor want to give out gift, it should be from his pocket. Anambra need money more than any other state presently. I wanted to raise this issue on the thread that posted it earlier, but due to bad belle people that will vomit trash, I kept mute. If Mr Peter Obi actually claim that He is wealthy before He become governor (As He claim) What is preventing him from using his money for the gift. Ask me a government that shares money and I will point out Mr Peter Obi. No Good government shares money to the people rather do something meaningful to the people. I respect Rochas today because he actually knows what it means to become wealthy. The full meaning of the word "wealthy". Mr Obi has turned ABS into his station over night, all you will be watching is where him or his wife visited and share envelope to them. Ubah and Obi are the same. Some facts. He commended the police informant, Mr. Chukwumezie Obed Igwe whose complaint led to the raid of the shrines and said he is a patriotic Nigerian who needed to be protected and encouraged. The IG noted that something concrete had to be done to remove the horrifying sights of the shrines from the psyche of the people of the area.
But the chief priest of Ogwugwu-Akpu, in Ubahu-Ezike village, Okija, Okonkwo Chukwuneta, an elderly man who could not say his age told journalists that the Ogwugwu-Akpu is a "goddess" and the wife to the Ulasi deity in Okija.
He said he had made three statements to the police since the August 4 raid, and that he was arrested and bundled into the bus on the first day of the raid and taken to the house of the chief priest of Ogwugwu Isiula in the negbouring Umuhu village. Although, he could not say how the worship of the deity started since he was born into it, he nonetheless said it has existed for ages. His duty as the deity's chief priest, he said, was to listen to complaints from people who come to report how they were oppressed and dispossessed of their land and other property by the rich.
The process of the oath taking, he said, begins with the complaint which is followed with a summon to the "oppressor". Upon his receipt of the invitation, he is expected to come and tell his own side of the story for the priests to hear in his house which serves as "his court". When both parties consistently insist on their version as the truth of the matter without any conceeding, the oath is administered as the last resort after they had been reminded of the deity's killing powers.
He confirmed that a popular business man, from Ihiala known as Chief Victor Okafor, a.k.a Ezego was killed by the Ogwugwu-Akpu deity, but said he would not know if his corpse was deposited in the evil forest.
According to him, somebody he did not name had earlier dragged Ezego to his court to swear to an oath over disagreements in business and financial dealings and that when he died he was brought a report about the death.
"That was in December of 2000 or thereabout", he said. Later Ezego's mother and the wife whom he said was chauffeur-driven to his court came to say that the businessman sometime swore on Ogwugwu-Akpu and wanted to know if the deity was responsible for his death.
This, he said, prompted his resort to divination, a kind of consultation with his god to know if it was responsible. The god, he said confirmed its responsibility, and that it needed the corpse. But he said that was the last he saw of Ezego's people. He suggested that if the business man's corpse was deposited in the forest, his agents, none of whom was around to answer questions, would be in a position to know.
He also said that outside businessmen, politicians going into alliance and people going over-seas for greener pastures come to him to administer oath of allegiance on them. He added that successful ones amongst the patrons come back later to offer sacrifice of cows or goats to the deity as the case may be. |

Crime › Kidnapped 82-yr-old Man Buried Alive In Edo by Youngzedd(op): 6:45am On Jun 20, 2013 |
BENIN— THE remains of an 82-year-old retired Inspector of Police, Elder Samuel Ekhoruyimen, who was allegedly abducted by some youths of Ewudu village in Ovia North- East Local Government Area of Edo State have been discovered in an ‘eveil forest’ near the village.
However, his remains suggest that he was buried alive in a grave dug before his abduction.
Pa Ekhoruyimwen who was the village head (Odionwere) of Oghobaghase near Ewudu community was said to have been invited to preside over the settlement of a dispute in his domain when he was allegedly waylaid and abducted by some youths of Ewudu village.
Vanguard gathered that following the octogenarian’s sudden disappearance on May 10, 2013, his children living in Benin informed the Police who declared him missing after 24 hours of futile efforts by the family to ascertain his whereabouts.
Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, Zone 5, Alhaji Hashimu Argungun, while speaking on the issue, disclosed that following intelligence reports, undercover agents led by one Sergeant Isaiah Osivwemu arrested one Osamudiamwen Uwaila of Ewudu community.
The AIG who spoke through the Deputy Police Commissioner in charge of Administration, Mr. Dave Akinremi, revealed that the confessional statement of the prime suspect led to the arrest of seven others, including the Chief Priest of the Ovia deity in Ewudu community, Pa Stephen Oviawe, 78.
He added that two village heads and two youths were also arrested in connection with the gruesome murder.
Efforts to recover the corpse
Meanwhile, the police boss said efforts to recover the corpse of the former Police Inspector have been intensified, saying other suspects now at large went to remove the remains from the grave before policemen were led there by one of the suspects.
The prime suspect, Osamudiamwen Uwaila, speaking with newsmen at the Adesuwa Police Station, yesterday, disclosed that he connived with others now at large, captured the victim on the way to his village and took him to an already dug grave in the evil forest of Ewudu community.
He added that they plotted to kill the victim because of his alleged role in a land dispute between Ewudu an d Orogun communities some years ago.
Vanguard learnt that after the arrest of some of the suspects who took the police to where the retired police officer was buried, it was discovered that the body had been exhumed and reburied in a yet to be identified grave in the Ovia forest.
It was learnt that the deceased may have been killed for ritual purpose. However, one of the suspects (name withheld) while confessing to the crime to the police, disclosed that they decided to re-bury the victim’s corpse because they found out that the body was buried close to the road, therefore they had to exhume to rebury so as to ensure that the body was not found by the police. Education › FG To Launch Fibre-optic Network Connecting 27 Universities by Youngzedd(op): 7:08am On Jun 19, 2013 |
Abuja – The Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson, said that the Federal Government would launch its Fibre-optic Research and Education Network, connecting 27 universities to the Internet by July. Johnson announced the plan in Abuja on Tuesday at the ongoing Ministerial Platform when she presented the ministry’s achievements in the two years of the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan. She said the project currently being tested was part of the ministry’s initiative to make Nigerian students a priority in the development of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector. She said that the project was in collaboration with Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission, Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) and World Bank STEP-B in the deployment of the education network to institutions. “Next month we will launch that Fibre-optic Research and Education Network that is connecting 27 Federal universities to each other by the Internet. “ The USPF supporting this project is expected to also connect 12 medical colleges, 28 off campus sites and nine federal universities by September 2013,” she said. She said that more state universities, polytechnics and colleges of education were expected to be connected to the network by 2014 and 2015. Johnson said the ministry had initiated another programme, called “Tertiary Institutions Access Project (TIAP)” under which desktop computers, printers, and wireless network facilities, among others, would be provided for tertiary institutions. She said, “the ministry through its TIAP project had established connectivity in 17 universities and their teaching hospitals using fibre optics technology. “Since the implementation of the programme, about 204 institutions have connected to it, with 74 institutions in 2012. “We also have another programme, `School Access Project (SAP), providing classmate PCs, with e-learning content and accessories, solar power solutions, high speed Internet connectivity and wireless network deployment to government public schools “This has been implemented in 605 schools between 2010 and 2012 with additional 218 schools in 2013 “All federal and state universities have now signed up for our Student Computer Ownership Scheme that allows students to purchase laptops using a low interest facility with monthly repayment plan of between N3,500 and N5,800,’’ she said. Johnson, who decried low rate of adoption of ICTs by Nigerians, added that 0.9 per cent of households owned a PC, 3.6 per cent had access to one and 3.1 per cent accessed the Internet. “An unacceptably high number of Nigerians are excluded from infrastructure that can meet their basic needs,’’ the minister said. She said that increasing the spread of ICTs, particularly through mobile phones, could be a means through which this could be corrected. She noted that the ministry was extending communications infrastructure to un-served and under-served areas through the Accelerated Mobile Phone Expansion (AMPE-BTS) programme that was helping to deploy Base Stations in rural areas. “A total of 54 base stations has been installed while additional 28 are planned for 2013. “We also have Rural Broadband Initiative (RUBI) that provides wholesale Internet bandwidth to ISPs, Cyber cafes, and ICT centres like Community Communication Centres (CCC) in rural communities. “Of the 18 pilot sites selected, 12 are 95 per cent completed and transmission testing is currently ongoing in Akure and Osogbo,’’ she added. Johnson said that the ministry was working to ensure that Nigerians had access to Internet at affordable prices, irrespective of their economic background. She noted that with the intervention of the ministry, the number of base stations in Nigeria had increased exponentially since the inception of GSM service from 116 in 2001 to about 21,000 by 2010. “The pace of growth has, however, slowed even as some existing base stations have been decommissioned as a result of terror attacks, theft and vandals. “About 150 base stations were lost in 2012 due to bombings and flooding; twice as many dependent base stations were also affected,’’ she said. Johnson said the numbers of base stations in the country was expected to rise from the current 27,000 to 65,000 in 2018 to meet the national target of a five-fold increase in broadband penetration by 2018.
