Politics › Four Convicts Hanged In Edo, As Amnesty, LEDAP Kick by Youngzedd(op): 7:01am On Jun 25, 2013 |
BENIN-CITY – Four death row prisoners, Chima Ejiofor, Daniel Nsofor, Osarenmwinda Aigbonkhan and Richard Igagu in Edo State, were, yesterday, executed, despite their pending appeals at the Court of Appeal.
It will be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan had recently directed state governors to sign the execution warrant of death row inmates, advising them not to shy away from same, as it was part of their duties.
Vanguard gathered that the execution took place despite the pendency of the suit by the condemned inmates, challenging their being on death row for over 16 years. They had also asked that their conviction be commuted to life imprisonment.
Meanwhile, Legal Defence and Assistance Project, LEDAP and Amnesty International, yesterday, condemned the execution.
Vanguard was informed that the execution was carried out at 6:45pm, yesterday, by hang men.
Edo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Henry Idahagbon, in his reaction, said the executed men were convicted 15 years ago, noting that the Edo State Government had nothing to do with the execution.
He said: “These people were convicted 15 years ago. I was only informed this (last) night by the prison authorities that they had been hanged. One of them was convicted in Kaduna, while their matters had gone up to the Supreme Court, and came back to the Federal High Court, Benin. It really has nothing to do with us as a government.
“The governor only signed the death sentence of two, while previous governors signed that of two others. The information I got was that they went to the Federal High Court, which Monday refused their plea for leniency and I believe what the prison authorities did was to execute them immediately after they left the court.
“Edo State government has no hand in it. I was only informed that it had been done,” he added.
In the suit before the Federal High Court, the death row prisoners had
contended that to execute them after over 16 years of trauma, suspense and imminent death would amount to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.
They had asked the court to order the Edo State Governor to commute their death sentences to terms of imprisonment.
LEDAP, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Mr. Chino Obiagwu, said: “The Attorney-General of Edo State and the prison authorities were duly served with the court processes, comprising the notice of appeal and motion for stay of execution.
“Under Nigerian laws, an appeal and application for stay of execution should restrain further action until the appeal is determined.
“By executing the prisoners, Nigeria government has demonstrated gross disregard to the rule of law and respect for the judicial process.”
Amnesty’s reactions
Amnesty, in its statement, said: “We have received credible reports that authorities in Edo State have hanged four men in Benin City Prison on Monday (yesterday), the first known executions in the country since 2006.
“A fifth man remains at imminent risk of execution.”
Amnesty’s Deputy Director for Africa, Lucy Freeman, said: “If confirmed, these executions mark a sudden, brutal return to the use of the death penalty in Nigeria, a truly dark day for human rights in the country.
“We again urge the Nigerian authorities to stop all executions immediately and return to the moratorium on executions in the country.
LEDAP noted that “it had, with HURSDEF, on October 19, 2012, filed a suit at the Federal High Court, Benin, on behalf of death row prisoners earmarked for execution by Edo State Government.
“In the suit, the death row prisoners in the suit contended that to execute them after over 16 years of trauma, suspense and imminent death would amount to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.”
“The prisoners had asked the court to order the Edo State governor to commute their death sentences to terms of imprisonment.
“However, judgment was delivered against the inmates by Justice Liman of the Federal High Court, holding among other grounds, that the prisoners did not place sufficient facts before the court to substantiate the relief sought in the suit.
The appeal
“LEDAP filed an appeal against the judgment of the Federal High Court and also a motion for stay of execution pending the outcome of the appeal and served the notice of appeal with the motion for stay of execution on the Attorney General of Edo State and prison authorities in Edo State.
“Furthermore, all death row prisoners filed a case pending at the Court of Appeal Lagos, challenging the decision of state governors to sign their execution warrants in the case of Godwin Pius & Ors vs. Governor of Abia State & Ors.
“Both appeals are pending at the Court of Appeal and the Edo State Governor and Comptroller General of Prisons are parties in both appeals. LEDAP is representing the prisoners in both appeal and also a party to the appeal in Edo State.
“We condemn the execution of the four inmates despite the pendency of the appeal and motion for stay of execution filed by the inmates.
“Execution of the inmates, while their appeal is pending, is unlawful and amounts to a total disregard for the rule of law and judicial process in any democratic system.” Source |
Business › CBN Sells $500m To Stabilise Naira by Youngzedd(op): 6:50am On Jun 25, 2013 |
Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, yesterday sold $500 million at the bi-weekly foreign exchange auction to forestall depreciation of the naira.
The amount sold represents 66 percent increase when compared to $300 million sold per previous foreign exchange auctions. The increase represents a strong signal from the apex bank about its determination to stabilise the naira.
However, despite this increase, the naira depreciated by 10 kobo at the inter-bank foreign exchange market yesterday.
From N159 per dollar, the interbank exchange rate rose slightly to N159.10 per dollar. But at the official market, the naira remained stable, as the official exchange rate remained N155.75 per dollar.
According to the result of the bi-weekly Wholesale Dutch Auction System, WDAS, CBN offered $500 million, and sold millions of dollars to 21 banks.
“It is a demonstration of capacity and capability to meet foreign exchange demand on the part of the CBN,” said Wale Abe, Executive Secretary, Financial Market Dealers Association of Nigeria, FMDA.
He said this would help to eliminate speculation against the naira in the foreign exchange market.
Abe said: “CBN perceived there was a shortfall in supply, which increased demand pressure, hence to reduce this pressure and forestall speculation, CBN decided to intervene to ensure that all outstanding genuine demand is met.
“With this, there is no reason for anybody to speculate about the ability of CBN to meet demand.”
Due to increasing foreign exchange demand, the naira has depreciated by N2.53 at the interbank foreign exchange market this year. From N156.67, the interbank exchange rate rose to N159.1 per dollar.
This is despite increased foreign exchange sales from CBN. From $250 million per auction, CBN had earlier in the year increased foreign exchange sale to $300 million per auction.
But this was inadequate to meet increasing demand owing to huge foreign portfolio investment outflow and declining revenue from oil. Source |

Food › Pawpaw, Remedy For Treating Various Diseases- Nutritionist by Youngzedd(op): 2:40pm On Jun 24, 2013 |
Hajiya Jummai Abdul, a Nutritionist at the Wuse General Hospital, Abuja, said on Monday that pawpaw (papaya) was a remedy for the treatment of various diseases.
Abdul told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that pawpaw prevented heart diseases and lowered the risks of many ailments, including cancer.
She said pawpaw was a rich source of antioxidants, phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals and special digestive enzymes that had a remarkable internal and external effects.
“Ripe pawpaw is a great source of antioxidant vitamin `C’, vitamin `E’ and carotenoids like beta-carotene and lycopene a naturally occurring chemical that gives fruits and vegetables a red colour.
“The rich antioxidant contents of pawpaw, particularly, were beneficial in reducing the risk of developing cancer,’’ she said.
According to Abdul, the high levels of these valuable nutrients helped to protect the skin against free radicals known to cause damage leading to wrinkles and other visible signs of ageing.
She added that pawpaw also helped in wound healing, burns and assisted in the treatment of skin problems like acne, blemishes and age spots.
She explained that the high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin in pawpaw might also protect against developing cataracts, glaucoma and other chronic eye diseases.
“Other good sources of lutein and zeaxanthin are spinach, broccoli and the yolks from free range eggs,’’ the nutritionist said.
Abdul said the high level of vitamins `C’ and `E,’ along with antioxidants like beta-carotene and lycopene in pawpaw, could help reduce the oxidisation of cholesterol in the arteries.
According to her, cholesterol oxidisation is considered a dangerous process, potentially leading to arteries blocking with plaque that can result in heart attacks.
“Increasing one’s intake of these antioxidants from healthy food like pawpaw may help improve blood flow to the heart and reduce the risk of developing heart disease,” she said.
Abdul also explained that pawpaw was a good source of foliate which helped control homocysteine levels in the bloodstream.
NAN reports that high levels of homocysteine in the blood is known to damage blood vessels and is considered another potential cause of cardiovascular disease.
She further explained that the beneficial fibre in pawpaw helped to lower undesirable low density lipoprotein( LDL) cholesterol levels in the blood by inhibiting its absorption during digestion.
Abdul also said the enzymes in pawpaw, especially the green fruit, could improve digestion by breaking down proteins into the individual amino acids.
“There are several important compounds that make pawpaw a beneficial fruit for reducing the risk of developing certain types of cancers.”
Abdul recommended that to improve the skin, relieve digestion problems, protect the eyes, heart and possibly lower risk of many diseases like cancer; one should cultivate the habit of eating pawpaw. (NAN) |

Politics › White House Prays For Mandela by Youngzedd(op): 8:35am On Jun 24, 2013 |
WASHINGTON (AFP) – The White House said Sunday its thoughts and prayers were with Nelson Mandela after hearing he was in critical condition, as President Barack Obama prepares to visit South Africa.
“We have seen the latest reports from the South African government that former president Mandela is in critical condition,” National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and the people of South Africa.”
Obama leaves Wednesday on a tour of Africa that will take him to Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania, but he has said he will defer to Mandela’s family regarding any meeting with the anti-apartheid icon.
The possibility of a meeting between the first black presidents of both South Africa and the United States has been hotly anticipated for years.
But the declining health of Mandela, 94, who has been fighting a lung infection, and Obama’s failure to visit South Africa until his second term, have left the prospect in doubt.
Obama will stay overnight in Johannesburg and Cape Town during his trip, and plans to visit Robben Island, where Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison.
Obama met Mandela soon after he was elected a US senator in 2005, when the former South African president was visiting Washington, and the two have spoken several times since on the telephone.
Obama’s wife, Michelle, was able to visit to Mandela during her trip to Africa two years ago, and she said it was the most moving moment of her visit.
Obama will leave Washington on Wednesday for the three-nation tour meant to emphasize economic potential and democratic development.
He will not, however, be visiting Kenya, which was the homeland of his late father and where he still has living relatives.
The fact that Kenya’s recently elected President Uhuru Kenyatta is facing trial at the Hague for allegedly orchestrating deadly violence in 2007 and 2008 following previous polls had stymied plans for a possible visit. Source |
Business › Manager Arrested For Robbery In Own Bank by Youngzedd(op): 7:46am On Jun 24, 2013*. Modified: 8:04am On Jun 24, 2013 |
Asaba—AN Operations Manager with a first generation bank in Agbor, Delta State has been arrested by the police for allegedly conniving with an armed robbery gang that raided the bank, weekend.
The gang had in a commando style operation, succeeded in carting away millions of naira in both local and foreign currencies on Friday, while some bank customers and passers-by were wounded in the process.
Delta State Police command’s spokesman, Mr. Lucky Uyabeme, said that “the arrested Operations Manager of the bank is helping the police in its investigation. The command will not leave any stone unturned in ensuring that all the hoodlums involved are brought to book.
“Preliminary investigation revealed an insider connection in the bank robbery as the two keys to the strong room that were supposed to be kept by two different senior staff were left with the Operations Manager, who in turn left the strong room open.
“The four bullet proof doors were not tampered with. One of the senior staff of the bank who was supposed to be with one of the keys to the strong room purported to be sick, handed over the keys to the Operations Manager,” Uyabeme said. Source |
